Automated platelet counting using impedance measurement has replaced manual counting and improved efficiency and accuracy. However, certain platelet abnormalities can interfere with automated counts, requiring confirmation through histogram analysis or alternative methods like fluorescence staining or manual counting. Abnormal histograms indicate issues like giant platelets, microcytes, or fragmentocytes that prevent clear separation of platelet and red blood cell populations, making the automated count unreliable. In these cases the platelet value must be verified through other means.
