Solids, liquids, and gases can be distinguished by the arrangement and motion of their molecules. In solids, molecules have no room to move and are tightly packed together. In liquids, molecules can slide past one another but maintain a fixed volume. Gases have the highest molecular mobility as molecules stay far apart and a gas expands indefinitely to fill its container.
