Breastfeeding is emphasized as the best infant feeding method, and when direct feeding is not possible, expressed breastmilk or pasteurized donor human milk (PDMH) is recommended, especially for low birth weight and preterm babies. India currently has 14 human milk banks, but their growth is slow due to various challenges such as lack of awareness and competition from formula milk. The guidelines for establishing these banks aim to ensure the safe processing and distribution of donor breastmilk for high-risk newborns while promoting exclusive breastfeeding.
