Teaching ESL Writing (Final Paper)
Teaching ESL Writing
At times the plethora of professional journals and the myriad subjects treated therein seems like
little more than a dizzying exercise in redundancy and a forum for education professionals to
justify their worth in a competitive job market; however, I would like to think that there is a
hidden value for those of us whose brains seem to operate in what some might call a spiral
rhetorical pattern, that as we work our way around and around certain issues related to composition
instruction, we are moving gradually upward toward broader understanding and better practice.
Some studies seem to do little more than show the need for more studies, their authors falling back
on such standard phrases as, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Having lately read a great deal of professional literature regarding the ups and downs of teaching
college composition to ESL students, I ve noticed that students with LDs are conspicuously absent a
fact that suggests one or more possible conclusions: Students with LDs just aren t represented in
college level ESL courses; Students with LDs are there but they don t have needs separate from
those of non LD students that would require special consideration by college teachers; These
students are there and have needs requiring special attention by their teachers, but the teachers
themselves lack understanding of what those needs are and how to accommodate them.
Which of these holds most true, in general, is what I ve set out to discover, in hopes that I will
find a hidden font of knowledge addressing the singular needs of ESL students with LDs and how
teachers do, or can, meet those needs. The possibility that my first reason mentioned above might
be true leads to a political can of worms I d prefer to leave unopened; therefore, I ll concentrate on
the third choice that LD students who are also learning English as a second or other language are
merely going unrecognized due to the masking of LD symptoms behind communicative difficulties
resulting from the hardships inherent in non native language learning.
In her 1993 article addressing the induction of first year college

The Affect Of The Six-Day War On Israel
Terrorism and war have affected Israel, and the people living there, ever since they became their
own nation. Over the long history of Jerusalem it has been destroyed twice, besieged 23 times
attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times. Jerusalem was established by King David
as the capital city of Israel, however there has since been a struggle of which religion should
occupy the region. Christians and Muslims have been fighting a long time to control the land of
Israel because they both feel they are entitled to it. The Muslims believe Muhammad s armies
founded Israel. On the other hand, the Christians feel positive that the land should be theirs because
they founded it first. Numerous people have died over the years for... Show more content on

The Arab nations were trying to eliminate Israel and take away the shame they felt after they
were defeated a few years earlier when they fought Israel. The countries against Israel united
together and planned out the war thinking it would be a piece of cake. Moreover, Israel fended
off the countries and won the war in six days hence the name the Six Day War. General
Mordechai Hod, who was a commanding general for the Israeli Air Force, said about the Six
Day War, The dangers of Israel s extermination was hardly present before the Six Day War (Dodd
and Mead Co). The Six Day War increased the number of terrorist attacks that Israel has now, this
is because many countries are not fans of Israel and are upset about the way they lost the war.
The countries that fought Israel used a billion dollars worth of supplies during the war, causing
serious debt. The Six Day War changed the events that happened in Israel and the ones that are
still occurring in Israel. Israel gained some respect because of how they won the war against all
the countries facing them in the Six Day War. Furthermore, Israel gained respect from some of the
countries. Even though Israel had a small population they put up a tough fight. Israel showed
resilience during the Six Day War, and since the war they have been able to protect their

The Pros And Cons Of Santa Claus
Shops are bursting with toys, mince pies are on the menu and radios are blasting out Christmas
tunes so it s time for another festive favourite: lying to children.
For millions of children, Santa is an essential part of the Christmas magic. But if parents persuade
their children that Santa is real, that lie may harm them, according to psychologists
First of all, you re setting your child up for inevitable disappointment when they realize the truth
about Santa.
Everyone remembers that moment they realized that Santa Claus wasn t real. The disappointment is
so searing. For many people the holidays never again hold the same kind of magic. Speaking as
former child, I remember the abject disappointment when I found out that this Christmas magic was
just a fiction. The spell was broken; the escape from reality that children and adults can share for a
few months had gone. Christmas was never the same again.
Most children like little believe in Santa Claus. But when do they stop? Perhaps gardeners about
5 6, and some do not stop and up to 7 year olds. Breaking with Santa Claus is like parting with
childhood. Do we encourage our children to believe for a long time, or even when they are five, to
surrender and reveal their naked truth? Do we believe ourselves? Who is actually Santa?
It is not a lie to buy gifts, it is the belief in the good old man who brings to everyone something on
Christmas. He is a fairy tale hero who holds the right to believe in the magic of this feast, the

Influence Of The Mayan Culture In Southern Mexico
In Southern Mexico, the Mayan culture existed from 250 to 900. These people created a
calendar based on a philosophy of natural rhythms and is viewed as prophetic. The culture of the
Mayans is based on the idea of 13 Heavens , or cycles of creativity, and 9 Underworlds , or
consciousness levels. These are often pictured as steps on a pyramid type structure. The 13
Heavens, which are each said to be influenced by a creation deity, are all contained in the Long
Count , which was a long period of time tracked by the calendar. This period began in 3114 BC and
ended in 2012, when the world was expected by many to end as the calendar came to an end.
These 13 Heavens contain 7 odd numbered and 6 even numbered Heavens. Each Heaven is based

Describe My Defining Moment
If you have lived for any length of time, you probably had a defining moment. I experienced my
defining moment in the summer of 2010 when I was six years old. You may not think a child that
young could have a defining moment, but you would be wrong. Moreover, our experiences as
children help to shape our personalities, our outlook on life, and what fears and anxieties we
develop. My defining moments happened on a trip to The American Museum of Natural History.
There was nothing spectacular about that day; it started out just like any other. My dad planned
a trip to the Museum of Natural History. I did not particularly like going to the museum. At that
age, I found it boring because there was nothing to do, but stare at things that did not interest
me, and that I could not touch or play with. Nevertheless, off we went. When we were only a
couple of blocks away, dad said he was afraid we would not be able to find parking close to the
museum. Therefore, when he saw a parking space several blocks away, he pulled over and parked.
His plan was for us to take the train to the museum.
Taking the subway had never been pleasant for me. I disliked the crowdedness, and ... Show more

because I thought he was honking at me. I thought he was saying hello, so I looked up to tell
dad that the conductor honked at me, and when I looked up, my world stopped. The man I had
been following all this time was not my dad. In a state of panic, I ran away as fast as I could but
had no idea where I was running. My heart was pounding, my head was spinning, and my eyes

Rebeca In Annabel s Mistreatment Of Intersex
My first encounter with the term intersex was in the book Annabel. I had happened upon this
particular copy when I was stockpiling books from a Borders that was going out of business.
Getting around to reading it took awhile, but as soon as I started reading I was hooked staying up
most the night to finish. Annabel s story faded in and out of my memory, and I did not encounter
the term again until college. In my undergraduate Queer film class we viewed the film XXY
Viewing XXY rekindled my interest in intersex people. I searched the Internet trying to find more
intersex films to watch and was stunned to find that the list was less than 15 films short. Both was

Doctors and medical literature unabashedly advocate misrepresentation, concealment of facts,
and outright lying by the parents (Chase 32). Rebeca had been told elaborate lies her entire life.
Her mother and father told her that she had a brother who died at a young age and that all record
of him had burned in a fire. Their lies begin to unravel when Rebeca is sent a photo album from
her great aunt Mica containing only pictures of Pedrito. The doctors had warned them that
Rebeca s new identity should not be threatened in any way. They move to a different country and
destroyed everything from Rebeca s old life. This is, again, eerily similar to Chase s story. In her
article she writes, Following doctors orders, my parents then changed my name, combed their
house to eliminate all traces of my existence as a boy (photographs, birthday cards, ect.),
changed my birth certificate, [and] moved to a different town (34). When Rebeca demands to
know why they had to operate her mother responds by ask, What people might have said if they
saw it [penis]? This makes it clear that the motivation behind the surgery was to escape social
ridicule rather than for Rebeca s health. Rebeca is again so infuriated by her mother s answers that
she imagines violently hurting her. This is typical of the rage felt by many intersex individuals
when they discover the lies they

Amadeus Movie Essay
The film Amadeus directed by Milos Forman in 1984 was a look in to the interesting and short
life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart was considered a child prodigy and genius by
possessing qualities such as: composing his first concerto at the age 4, first symphony by the age
of seven, his first opera by twelve, being able to just hear a piece of musiconce and being able to
play it back perfectly from memory, playing the piano with a blindfold on, or playing the piano
upside down and backward. The film was narrated by another composer, Antonio Salieri, who was
portrayed has having a love/hate relationship with Mozart.
Amadeus may have won best picture in 1984, but did not score as high with historians. There were
quite a few events or situations that happened in Amadeus that were portrayed inaccurately. A few

The first inaccuracy of Salieri s feelings have been deemed as inaccurate. In several of Mozart s
letters, there is evidence that the Italians (supposedly lead by Salieri) in Emperor Joseph s court
did get in the way of several attempts to advance Mozart s career, and some of these are
portrayed in the film. There is, however, no clear proof that Salieri hated Mozart or plotted
against him or planned his death (Fact or Fiction). I found a wide range of views on Mozart s and
Salieri s relationship. Some say they were the best of friends, and some said they never actually
meet in person, but never once did I come upon any information that there was bad blood between
them. The second inaccuracy found was that the film only showed Mozart and Constanze having

Analysis Of Bartholomew Quot ; An Adult Attachment Model
Bartholomew Horowitz (1991) developed an adult attachment model conceptualized through the
understanding that a person s image of the self and the other is dichotomized as positive or
negative. Through this framework they developed four dimensions, that range from a combination
of understanding the self as worthy of loveor not and seeing other people as trustworthy or
unreliable. This paper will focus on one dimension, dismissive attachment, and how the behaviors,
thoughts, and feelings associated with this group disrupts the fundamental need for meaningful
connections to people. Baumeister Leary (1995) developed the Need to Belong Theory, which
states that people have a pervasive drive to form and maintain stable interpersonal... Show more

Those experiences with the caretaker are internalized and become a model for attachment
expectations in later relationships. Attachment styles provide internal working models through
which individuals perceive and relate to the world and to others (Shorey Snyder 2006). The type of
attachment style impacts what kinds of internal working models are developed. Subsequently, if an
internal working model is seen as dysfunctional, there is the possibility of creating vulnerabilities to
the development of psychopathology.
Bartholomew Horowitz (1991) also defined the different attachment styles, secure, preoccupied,
fearful, and dismissive, according to dependence and avoidance. The researchers defined
avoidance as the degree to which people avoid close contact with others as a result of their
expectation of aversive consequences; and dependence is defined on a spectrum where those low in
dependence represents the establishment of positive self regard internally without the need for
validation from others and those high in dependence are only able to internalize positive self regard
when they receive constant external validation.
When combining the two dimensions, a dismissive attachment style indicates feelings of
worthiness combined with a negative regard for other people. As a result of these ways of being,
dismissive people protect themselves against being disappointed by avoiding relationships and
maintaining independence and

Birth of a Nation film critique
D. W. Griffith was raised on a Kentucky farm in Crestwood, with his father, his mother, and
sister. His father was a colonel in the Confederate Army, and served Kentucky as a state
legislator. His family raised him Methodist, and his sister did his schooling in a one room
schoolhouse. At the age of 10, his father died and his mother left the farm to move to Louisville,
Kentucky. They struggled with poverty after that, and he eventually got into acting and
filmmaking. He started off as an actor when his first screenplay was rejected. However, he started

When he tries to express his sexuality towards her, she brushes him off, which further enforces
the idea that the free blacks are over sexualized. The biggest sense of loyalty from Mammy we
see is when she tries to protect her master from union soldiers arresting him for being in the Ku
Klux Klan. Gus, the Union Solider, seems to be best associated with brute and coon tendencies,
which is characterized by his sexuality towards Flora. The union soldiers in general represent
the brutal buck character type because they are seen as violent, uncontrollable and sexualized in
the film. Gus, also has coon tendencies, however, in the way his character expresses himself.
His eyes are very big and full of expression, and seem to be laughed at a lot. He is used as comic
relief in addition to his role as an instigator to the Ku Klux Klan. When he comes onto Flora, he
is overly sexual and aggressive towards her. He seems to be out of control as soon as the
interaction starts, and ends with a chasing scene through the forest. This goes along with the
Moonlight and Magnolia theme that white women are the epitome of beauty, and how frail and
delicate they seem. Silas Lynch is also depicted as overly aggressive in his pursuit and proposal to
Elsie Stoneman. This represents the fear of miscegenation, as well as rape. The skewed view
promotes the domination of women through portrayals of white women and black soldiers. The
Stoneman housekeeper, Lydia, is portrayed as a

Materialism In Alexander Pope And Pope s Rape Of The Lock
The views of women have altered over time, but have always had objectifying tendencies. During
the 18th century, cosmetic alteration to natural beauty peaked and materialism heightened
throughout societal views. Authors such as Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift vividly spew
these views throughout their writings. Pope s Rape of the Lock exposes the materialism used in
objectifying women, mainly in the upper class societal levels. The whole plot of the story centers
around a cosmetic appearance creating an objectified view, as since the lock of hair was cut from a
womans head, the missing lock became, so called, evidence of a man s sexual conquest. Other
sexual conquests, forced or not, are spoken with anything but love and only those of... Show more

This elevation highly represents the overall theme that materialism plays an almost biblical role
in society. The other way to analyze the list is that the Bibles are brought down to the very
materialistic level of the other listed cosmetics. Another aspect to note is that Bibles is plainly
listed, not the first or last mentioned item, but somewhere in the middle. Both ways conclude
that the cosmetic, material items compare at the same level as the Bible s paired along with
them. Another list comes with a comparison of paired items that contradict each other s
importance; ... Or stain her honor, or her new brocade,/ forget her prayers, or miss a masquerade,
/ Or lose her heart, or necklace, at a ball;... (Pope II 106 107). The first description used in each
line is something of importance, as staining honor, forgetting prayers or losing her heart all have
serious implications and consequences. But then those more serious actions are paired with trivial
material ones; staining a new brocade, missing a masquerade or losing a necklace at a ball. The
material actions paired with important ones really unify them as being on the same level of
importance. The contradiction is removed and materialism is elevated.
Objectification of women goes hand and hand with materialism. When Pope speaks of the sexual
conquests in The Rape of the Lock, he only focuses on the material aspects that result

Afro-American Theatre Summary
Traylor splits this essay up into distinct sections in order to clearly discuss the two theatrical
formats of the origins of Afro American theatre; the minstrel show and the slave narrative. She
discusses both as the basis of Negro theatre. Both of these forms are independent of the previous
tragedy and comedy genres that the Europeans had created. She discusses the minstrel showand its
origins. Traditional masked performance and ritual is a concept African slaves brought with them to
America and adapted into a minstrel show. Traylor discusses the farcical caricatures that white
people portrayed in the black face adaptations of these minstrel shows. She discusses how these
offensive and over dramatic caricatures over shadowed the cultural performance they were trying to
display. She goes on to explain that preoccupation with this caricature distracts from the study of the
structural elements of the minstrel show that are important to the Afro American dramatic form.
Minstrel shows themselves are very elastic in nature and highly improvised. To conclude discussion
on minstrel shows she discusses the reason why American s took the format of the minstrel show.
She explains that because Americans at... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second Afro American contribution to theatre is the slave narrative. This narrative was
something new and entirely original to American culture. The plots developed from oral stories
passed on about run away slaves. Traylor discusses Fredrick Douglas s Narrative and William
Wells Brown s The Escape as good examples of the slave narrative. Both pieces have strong
language and lyrical quality. The Escape was performed as a one man story telling show at anti
slavery lectures and events. This form of presenting Afro American culture seems much more
accurate and representative of real Afro Americans than the minstrel shows performed by white
people in black face. Traylor also discusses the old time negro preacher Traylor,

Effects Of Pecs On Manding And Speech Development For...
Another study by Tincani, Crozier, and Alazetta (2006) looked at the effects of PECS on manding
and speech development for school aged children. The study had two different parts, the first study
involved two children with ASD, and the study wanted to increase the amount of independent
manding, displayed when a child exchanges a picture symbol for an object without prompting.
The researchers followed the PECS guidelines in a delayed multiple baseline design study, where
participant one was taught phases I IV of PECS and participant two was taught phases I and II of
PECS. Both participants greatly increased their independent manding over the course of the study,
especially as they advanced through the phases of PECS. Participant two required more than twice
as many sessions as participant one to meet the acquisition criteria for phases I and II and therefore
did not have the opportunity to learn subsequent phases before the experiment ended. Participant
two did not use any measurable speech during the study and therefore was not used for study two.
Participant one demonstrated only vocal approximations (vocalization that was clearly not the name
of the item the participant was manding) instead of word vocalization and participant two did not
use any measurable speech during the study. Therefore, neither participant qualified to participate in
the second part of the study. (Tincani, Crozier, Alazetta, 2006). The second part of the study

From the research I have done Keitel is portrayed as a disgraced desk soldier whose only defence
in the trial was that he was obeying orders. I still do not agree with Wilhelm s argument because
he had a choice not to follow through with Hitler s wishes but instead signed orders for various
ruthless killings and attacks. Keitel knew his actions were really obscene but he chose to go
through with them to please Hitler. The judge s final verdict for Wilhelm Keitel was that he is
guilty on all four accounts and sentenced to death by hanging. Keitel signed orders for the
attacks on the neutral countries of Belgium and the Netherlands. He also ordered the attacks on
soldiers in the East that should be met by putting to death fifty to one hundred Communists for
one German soldier s death. The judges made the appropriate sentencing for Keitel as he
deserved to die for his inhumane war orders. Superior orders, even to a soldier, cannot lessen the
crime when the evil doings are committed deliberately and ruthlessly. These kinds of orders
Keitel singed off on were just so vicious and cold blooded. Any normal human being in their right
mind would not allow for these actions to happen. Finally, Hans Frank was the third accused Nazi
who used the defence that he was just following orders. Frank was appointed Chief Civil

In spite of developments made regarding vocational approaches for dual diagnosis patients such as

Comparison Of Bauhaus And Minimalism
Throughout history, artists had many different motivations for creating what they did. Some
created pieces with religious significance, while others used art as an emotional outlet. The
twentieth century carried in a period of artists with new ideas and intentions. Two twentieth century
movements, Bauhaus and Minimalism, were not created to be symbolic or emotionally stirring as
much of the art of the past had been. Instead, they were movements focused on functionality and
simplicity. They disregarded the complex, realistic styles that had been popular throughout history
and exchanged it with minimalistic styles. These movements ushered in a style that would
heavily impact artists even today. Minimalism was followed very closely by Op Art and
Conceptual art, both of which disregarded previous beliefs about what art was and its purpose. Op
Art showcased illusions created with skillful tricks of line and shape. Conceptual art focused on
idea, giving the concept more power than the actual execution. Despite their obvious visual
differences, these four movements had quite a few similarities, including their disregard for the
methods and mindset of classical art as well as their extreme simplicities. All of these movements
have heavily influenced today s modern artand built upon one another over time. The Bauhauswas
originally a school founded by Walter Gropius, a German architect who focused on simplicity. The
school was located in Germany and taught on a very specific style

abdomen. It is not yet fully understood its operation, although some theories suggest that it plays a
secondary role in the immune system, is the widespread view that it is totally unnecessary. The
removal of the appendix does not seem to have any effect on a person s health. What causes
appendicitis? Obstruction of the lumen (the inside of the Appendix) can cause appendicitis. The
mucus produced recedes into the lumen causing the multiplication of bacteria normally found in the
appendix. The consequence is that the appendix swells and becomes infected.
Sources of obstruction can be: feces, parasites, abnormal growth of the lymphatic tissue (for
example due to the Crohn s disease), foreign bodies or stones (grapes, cherries, peppers) tumors. An
inflamed appendix probably burst if not removed. Bursting would spread the infection throughout
the abdomen, causing peritonitis.
To whom it may happen? All subjects can be appendicitis, but is most common in people between
10 and 30 years of age.
What are the symptoms of appendicitis? Most people with appendicitis classic symptoms that any
doctor can easily identify. The main symptom is abdominal pain, usually sudden, often inducing a
person to wake up at night: you hear

Comparison Of King Richard III And Looking For Richard
To understand the complexity of the lineage of the English monarchy, it is imperative to make a
connection between present values and those of the past. While contemporary society demonstrate
an appreciation of William Shakespeare s play King Richard III (1851) it is not one of his plays
they can readily connect with. Al Pacino s docu drama, Looking for Richard, (henceforth Looking
for...) (1996) attempts to bridge that gap through intertextual connections. Both composers elucidate
their respective contexts through their exploration of the English monarch, King Richard III,
through their representation of the Elizabethan struggle for power and Pacino s attempts to connect
the post modern world to the 16th century. Pacino attempts to transform the Elizabethan play in

Shakespeare uses the short stage direction: they fight; Richard is slain followed by the
animalistic and savage metaphor of the bloody dog is dead to convey Richard s death. He uses
animal imagery conveyed by Richmond along with the sudden and immediate death of Richard
after he is willing to trade a kingdom for a horse to show his audience that God has carried out
divine retribution due to Richard s Machiavellian nature. Pacino transformed this scene so that it
lead to a deeper understanding by his mainly secular 20th century audience. By undermining
Richmond s inglorious victory by having the soldiers shoot an arrow into Richard s back, Pacino
shows that Richard s death was unfair. He also removed Richmond s monologue to take the
audience s attention away from Richmond s speech about god and the righteousness of divine
retribution. Thus, by portraying conscience as being more important than divine retribution, Pacino
transformed Shakespeare s King Richard III to suit his context where Richard s guilt killed

The Weaknesses Of The Judicial Branch Of Government In The...
The first form of Government in America was the Articles of Confederation, the Articles of
Confederation worked but had a few flaws which included no system of national courts and also
Congress lacked strong and steady leadership. The weakness were quite significant so the
Constitutional Convention was held to revise the Articles of Confederationbut instead led to the
creation of the United StatesConstitution. The Federalist wanted a strong central government but
the Anti Federalists were scared that would be like Britain again so they opted for a small weak
central government; their roles in the Convention were to make The Articles of Confederation
please both parties and make compromises. The Constitutional Convention kept the Government
from being overpowered by creating Checks and Balances, The Executive branch was responsible
for enforcing the laws, Legislative creates the laws, and the Judicial Branch interprets the law. The
Checks were intended to keep one Branch of Government from being more powerful then another
Branch. The smaller and larger states compromised when creating laws by having the Senate and
also the House of Representatives, smaller states like the Senate because this means all states
would have an equal amount of reps but larger states preferred the House of Reps because the
amount of reps was based on population. I believe that in today s Government the Judicial Branch

Critical Review of Undaunted Courage Essay
Critical Review of Undaunted Courage
Stephen Ambrose s Undaunted Courage is a remarkable piece of nonfiction literature. His work is
so thorough that one wonders how he has time to do much more. Yet he has created time in his
life to go west and go camping and hiking and canoeing in the summers with his family. Which
possibly shows that anything can be raw material to the open mind, for it was on those trips that he
developed a great fascination with the Lewis and Clark expedition that explored the West when the
country was twenty five years old. Ambrose creates a precise and true story of the expedition in
witch most readers would be enthralled. His style is smooth, readable and enjoyable, unlike many
historical nonfiction of the day. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From November 1803 to September 1806, it was nearly three years of rough, tough work over land
that no American had ever seen before. The men were poorly prepared from the start. They were
frequently ill fed and dressed. The soldiers worked for pay of about $5 per month and a land grant
of 320 acres.
They were led well though. The author holds Meriwether Lewis in high esteem. Jefferson took
Meriwether under his wing and into his President s House to be his secretary. Their father son
relationship became a deep friendship, and Jefferson chose Lewis to head the expedition. Lewis
chose an associate, William Clark, to join him in command. Though Clark s official Army rank
was lieutenant, theirs was a true co captaincy. Most people s perception of early builders of
America is with a purity of reason and purpose, while, Ambrose shows that they are just as greedy
then as they are now. Also in the way of the book Ambrose wipes out the belief that Indians were
innocent harmless humans. They were filthy, dishonest, and belligerent, and awful to their women,
not totally unlike the mass of mankind.
In the end, not many of the goals were achieved. There was no all water route to the pacific.
Nearly all of Lewis and Clark s findings and accomplishments went unaccredited to them because of
Lewis s failure to print his journals, which Ambrose calls a treasure of American literature . And
three years after their return, Lewis committed suicide. Nonetheless, at its

ur in the forearm region. It is composed in crosses of axons which may produce changes in the
innervations of the upper limb muscles, mainly motor part of intrinsic muscles in the hand
(MANNERFELT, 1966; KIMURA, MURPHY and VARDA, 1976). Anastomosis in which the
branch anastomotic originates proximally in the median nerve and unites distally in the ulnar nerve
is known as Median
Ulnar anastomosis type or Martin Gruber anastomosis.
Martin, a Swedish anatomist, in 1763 was the first one to consider the possibility of connection
between the fascicles of the median and ulnar nerves in the forearm (MARTIN,
1763). In the following century, in 1870, Gruber dissected

It can arise between the branches destined to the deep flexor muscle of the fingers, or directly in the
median to the ulnar nerve, or between the anterior interosseous and ulnar nerves or in combinations
between these types of anastomoses
(NAKASHIMA, 1993).
However, another type of anastomosis can happen in the forearm. When the anastomotic branch
originates proximally in ulnar nerve and unites distally to median nerve is simply called
anastomosis of Median Ulnar type, or Martin Gruber reverse anastomosis or Marinacci anastomosis.
Marinacci in
1964 made a case report of a patient who traumatized the medium nerve in forearm, but still had
preservation of the median nerve innervations in the hand muscles, although had denervation of the
flexor muscles in forearm (MARINACCI,
1964). The Marinacci anastomosis is infrequently notified.
In some studies this type of anastomosis had not been found, being considered for many authors as
anatomical anomaly.
The occurrence of the Martin Gruber or Marinacci anastomoses can be understand by the fact that
the median and ulnar nerves were developed from a similar embryonic region (ALMEIDA, VITTI
and GARBINO,
1999). In addition, there are studies with high incidence

The Staggering Number of Styles and Genres of Lutheran...
CHAPTER 1
ERHARD BODENSCHATZ AND THE FLORILEGIUM POTENSE
Lutheran church music in its first two and a half centuries can be characterized by the incorporation
of a staggering variety of styles and musical genres. Plainchant, imitative polyphony, and chorale
hymnody existed alongside one another, and composers such as Heinrich SchГјtz (1585 1672) and
Johann Hermann Schein (1586 1630) were among the first to synthesize elements of Monteverdi s
seconda pratica with a fully German practice. Fruits of this multi style crosspollination, whether a
continuo based melodic harmonic framework, polychoral textures, use of the solo voice or
obligato instruments, all paved the way for the apex of this tradition, the concerted vocal works of
J.S. Bach. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Far from being an element that should be purged from the new forms of worship being developed
at this time, Luther allowed for coexistence of both Latin and German. Latin was the language of
scholarly writing and diplomacy, and to remove it entirely he believed would be detrimental to the
education of youth at the time. In the preface to his Deutsche Messe und Ordnung (German Mass
and Order of Divine Service) of 1526, Luther wrote:
For by no means would I have the Latin language completely removed from the divine service, as
my chief concern is with the youth. If I could bring to pass that Greek and Hebrew were as
familiar to us as the Latin, and offered as much good music and song, we would hold mass, sing
and read on successive Sundays in all four languages: German, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew.
Luther also acknowledged that building up a repertory of high quality German texted music which
could replace the inheritance of Latin hymnody would take considerable time. Referring to the
Roman Liturgy in the Diet of Ausburg of 1530, Luther wrote:
The best feature of these services is the fact that the fine seasonal Latin hymns have remained,
although,

Fred Maiorino had been a successful sales manager for Schering Plough Corporation for thirty

External And Of An Effective Compensation Program
External and Internal Equities in an Effective Compensation Program Wanda I. Ramos Trident
University MGT 511: Title of Course Professor s Name November 2, 2014 Abstract Pay structures,
regardless of the size of the organization, must have two things going for them, which are external
and internal equities. In order to give employees purpose to continue to give their loyalty and
retention, there must be incentives as paying for education, experience and training, job tenure,

a well written compensation program which includes incentives, and addresses both external and

Social Norms In Society
We live in a society of expectations. These expectations subconsciously shape our mannerisms
on a day to day basis. Stemming from these controlled mannerisms are social norms. Social
norms are the traits that have come to be typical over time because they have been shaped by
our surroundings and our everyday interactions. When a norm is broken, society reacts by
entering into shock. In a social experiment, I tested the reaction of society when I broke a social
norm. For my experiment, I violated a folkway. I went to get my hair cut at my normal salon.
This salon is an upscale, boutique blow dry bar and salon. There were many women in there
who were getting their hair done. I have been going to that salon for years, and have come to
know all of the employees and stylists. I had an appointment with my regular stylist who has cut
my hair ever since I was little. I usually always go for a trim of about an inch and a blow dry
after. This time, when my stylist asked me what I wanted, I looked her in the eye and said, take
it all off. I was asking her to shave my head completely. The reaction of the people in the salon
was one of shock. My hairdresser at first, looked at me and laughed as if I was joking. I then had
to say, no really, take it all off. This is when she started to look panicked. She then began to

Why The Reliefs On The Ara Pacis For Matrix Cell 1
The Ara Pacis and the Idealization of Power in the Age of Augustus
I am choosing to focus on the imperial portrait reliefs from the Ara Pacis for matrix cell 1 because
this monument combines politics, religion and social values. The Ara Pacis Augustae epitomizes
the Mos Maiorum, the visual manifestation of Roman virtues and laws. This paper will explain
why the reliefs on the Ara Pacis can be considered political propaganda. Furthermore, I will analyze
how the art in this monument exhibits the importance of civic piety in Roman politics.
The construction of the Ara Pacis was commissioned by the Senate on the 4th of July in13 BC to
celebrate the triumphant return of Augustus from his campaigns in Iberia and Gaul after three
years of absence. During this time he was forging alliances and organizing the southern provinces
of Gaul that would insure the prosperity of Rome. The construction of this monument marks a
great period of peace inaugurated by Augustus after a series of political upheavals that scourged
Rome following the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC and which lasted until the Battle of
Actium in 31 BC. For the first time since Rome began to build her empire, the provinces flourished
within the context of the Pax Romana .
The reliefs of the Ara Pacis are divided between allegorical and historical panels on the upper
register, while the lower register is decorated with acanthus scrolls that symbolize control over
nature. The reliefs of the northern and

Quentin Skinner Essay
Up for Interpretation or What is This Thing that Hearsay Is Not? is a journal article about how an
using the argument of another author in one s work is fine as long as it is an interpretation of the
original author s work. Quentin Skinner and Christopher Ricks have different backgrounds in
academia and therefore have different approaches to their common claim. Although both authors
have the same claim, they approach it from different angles and are able to analyze texts differently.
Quentin Skinner s main argument is that the act of interpretation principally consists in trying to
identify the nature of the intervention that some given text may be said to constitute (Skinner 1).
Skinner is a historian of belief systems prevailing in early modern Europe and treats adaptations as
contributions to preexisting texts. Co author Christopher Ricks has a different main argument than
Skinner. Ricks main argument is about texts and editing and exactly what was written (Ricks 5).
Ricks forms his argument from a literary viewpoint rather than a philosophical viewpoint like his
co author Skinner. Skinner develops his claim by referring to Machiavelli s The Prince. He
analyzes how Machiavelli quotes Cicero s argument and challenges it. Skinner states what is

Generally, as businesses main goal is profit, and the workforce diversity management is such a

in Australia is important, as it is one of the most culturally diverse in the world, with 27% of

Battles generally took place on the Roman Forum, until the mid 1st century BC since there was no
permanent amphitheatre. In the imperial period, gladiatorial games were traditionally held twice a
year in December and March to mark the end of the year and beginning of spring. Gladiatorial
combat involved beast hunting where the Romans had passion for hunting. For fighting beast,
Romans preferred big and dangerous animals bears, bulls, elephants and lions from the far reaches

American Sniper Thesis
Over the summer I read American Sniper I felt this book was a perfect fit for me I m very pro
military. I thought it would be a very interesting read since he was the most lethal sniper the US
military has ever seen. This book talks a lot about war and what people experience in different
countries fighting for our country and the struggles they have. I will be talking about what he
experienced through his training and all of his tours and many other experiences that were
mentioned in the book including his family. One of the things that stuck out to me was he was
raised in Texas and since he was a kid he s always been using sniper rifles he was also very
aggressive as a kid. He was always getting into fights but he did not start most of... Show more

torturing other people cutting people up. In my perspective when he came back from his second
tour he was showing a lot more signs of PTSD zoning out not really interacting with other people

Aristotle Segregates
Aristotle segregates virtues into two categories and they are moral and intellectual. Aristotle
believes that moral virtues is a product of habits, while intellectual virtues come from learning or
life experience. He stated that since nothing...can form a habit contrary to its nature (Book II, 1),
virtues are only possible to form by habits. For intellectual virtues, it can only be perfected over a
period of a time, as well with experience. A more concrete point that will solidify this conclusion is
that virtues are first learnt, then it will be presented, and the everyday life experience of the virtueis
in diversified position and situations will lead a way for development. Aristotleas well goes in detail

The Financial Performance Of Tesco Plc
In this report I will be analysing and evaluating the financial performance of Tesco PLC over the
past 5 years (2010 to 2014).
Background Company Information
Tesco was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen, he originally started up his business as a market stall
selling surplus groceries in the East End of London. The company is now not only a grocery store
but also a general merchandise retailer, selling clothes, furniture, electrical items and wide range of
other products and services including Tesco Bank, Tesco Mobile, and Blinkbox video on demand
service. Tesco currently operates in 12 countries around the world, employ over 500,000 people
and serve tens of millions of customers every week both in store and online.
Tesco became a private limited company in 1932 and in 1947 Tesco Stores (Holdings) PLC floated
on the stock exchange with a share price of 25p per share. Tesco were interested in what their
customers buying habits were in order to try and evolve their company so they decided to closely
watch customers behaviour and this led to the introduction of the Clubcard scheme in 1995 and a
banking service in 1997. This allowed them to collect customer data and personalise their discounts
in response to what they bought and this made them the UK s top supermarket. Aggressive
negotiation with suppliers helped them grow their market share from a mere 7% in 1971 to 31%
in 2007 making them the UK s top supermarket, which they still are today, (as according to the

The New York City s Puerto Rican Community
On 7 June 1969, hundreds of Puerto Ricans gathered in Spanish Harlem, New York City to
protest the arrest of Juan Fi Ortiz for a series of falsified crimes.[2] As a crowd gathered outside
the People s Church in El Barrio, Felipe Luciano addressed those assembled asserting that, We will
not allow the brutalization of our community to go on without a response. For every Puerto Rican
that is brutalized, there will be retaliation. [3]Luciano s statements were not ignored, and as the
crowd filtered into the streets their shouts of Despierta, Boricua. Defiende lo tuyo filled the air.
The events of 7 June 1969 were but one of many moments in the history of New York Citys Puerto
Rican community that gave rise to and lent support for the Young Lords Party.[4] Indeed over the
course of the next five years this ethnic group of radical intellectuals would help bring attention to
the plight of the Puerto Rican community in New York City. This essay explores the history of the
late twentieth century Puerto Rican migrants in New York City through an examination of the
Young Lords Party (1969 to 1974). In doing so, it examines several significant topics, including the
growth of the Puerto Rican population in New York City; the unique challenges this ethnic group
faced, and the origins, growth and decline of the Young Lords Party.
Twentieth Century Migration of Puerto Ricans To New York City

Too much money on something so pointless.
Pointless? Yes pointless. Do you remember why we originally went to war with Iraq? Bush told
us they had weapons of mass destruction. Do they? No. Why are we still there? I don t know...
do you? After searching Iraq for weapons and coming up empty handed George Bush decided he
did not like Sadam Hussein and the world would be much safer with out him so he attacks. He
did not even have the support of the European Union. Opposing countries included France,
Germany, Russia, Greece, Belgium and Belarus. He is now trying to make Iraq a democracy,
like the American government, which is not a bad idea at all. There is just way too much
opposition from Iraq, they obviously do not want it, let them have there dictatorship, it is not our
problem. This is a useless war now. We do have to give credit to the many countries that helped us
by sending in there own troops to Iraq. Mainly England, Italy and Poland who sent a combined total
of almost 15,000 troops to the 130,000 America sent. Unfortunately there are casualties.
Casualties include over 1000 American deaths and 7722 wounded American s in Iraq. What
about the Iraqi people? Are they cooperating? Nope, so far around 15,000 have been killed 30%
of the deaths were civilians. This is not right for Bush to do. He should not be in Iraq killing that

There are a few things you will need to do this such as, a ratchet, oil filter, fresh oil, ramps, and
something to drain your oil into. The whole process is pretty simple if you follow these steps.
The first step is to open your hood. There should be a lever inside your door that will release the
hood. Once you get the hood open you will need to take your oil cap off of the motor for better
air flow. It is important to clean the inside of that cap so you do not get any dirt in your motor. You

  • 2. Teaching ESL Writing (Final Paper) Teaching ESL Writing At times the plethora of professional journals and the myriad subjects treated therein seems like little more than a dizzying exercise in redundancy and a forum for education professionals to justify their worth in a competitive job market; however, I would like to think that there is a hidden value for those of us whose brains seem to operate in what some might call a spiral rhetorical pattern, that as we work our way around and around certain issues related to composition instruction, we are moving gradually upward toward broader understanding and better practice. Some studies seem to do little more than show the need for more studies, their authors falling back on such standard phrases as, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (3) Having lately read a great deal of professional literature regarding the ups and downs of teaching college composition to ESL students, I ve noticed that students with LDs are conspicuously absent a fact that suggests one or more possible conclusions: Students with LDs just aren t represented in college level ESL courses; Students with LDs are there but they don t have needs separate from those of non LD students that would require special consideration by college teachers; These students are there and have needs requiring special attention by their teachers, but the teachers themselves lack understanding of what those needs are and how to accommodate them. Which of these holds most true, in general, is what I ve set out to discover, in hopes that I will find a hidden font of knowledge addressing the singular needs of ESL students with LDs and how teachers do, or can, meet those needs. The possibility that my first reason mentioned above might be true leads to a political can of worms I d prefer to leave unopened; therefore, I ll concentrate on the third choice that LD students who are also learning English as a second or other language are merely going unrecognized due to the masking of LD symptoms behind communicative difficulties resulting from the hardships inherent in non native language learning. In her 1993 article addressing the induction of first year college ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Affect Of The Six-Day War On Israel Terrorism and war have affected Israel, and the people living there, ever since they became their own nation. Over the long history of Jerusalem it has been destroyed twice, besieged 23 times attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times. Jerusalem was established by King David as the capital city of Israel, however there has since been a struggle of which religion should occupy the region. Christians and Muslims have been fighting a long time to control the land of Israel because they both feel they are entitled to it. The Muslims believe Muhammad s armies founded Israel. On the other hand, the Christians feel positive that the land should be theirs because they founded it first. Numerous people have died over the years for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Arab nations were trying to eliminate Israel and take away the shame they felt after they were defeated a few years earlier when they fought Israel. The countries against Israel united together and planned out the war thinking it would be a piece of cake. Moreover, Israel fended off the countries and won the war in six days hence the name the Six Day War. General Mordechai Hod, who was a commanding general for the Israeli Air Force, said about the Six Day War, The dangers of Israel s extermination was hardly present before the Six Day War (Dodd and Mead Co). The Six Day War increased the number of terrorist attacks that Israel has now, this is because many countries are not fans of Israel and are upset about the way they lost the war. The countries that fought Israel used a billion dollars worth of supplies during the war, causing serious debt. The Six Day War changed the events that happened in Israel and the ones that are still occurring in Israel. Israel gained some respect because of how they won the war against all the countries facing them in the Six Day War. Furthermore, Israel gained respect from some of the countries. Even though Israel had a small population they put up a tough fight. Israel showed resilience during the Six Day War, and since the war they have been able to protect their ... • 4. The Pros And Cons Of Santa Claus Shops are bursting with toys, mince pies are on the menu and radios are blasting out Christmas tunes so it s time for another festive favourite: lying to children. For millions of children, Santa is an essential part of the Christmas magic. But if parents persuade their children that Santa is real, that lie may harm them, according to psychologists First of all, you re setting your child up for inevitable disappointment when they realize the truth about Santa. Everyone remembers that moment they realized that Santa Claus wasn t real. The disappointment is so searing. For many people the holidays never again hold the same kind of magic. Speaking as former child, I remember the abject disappointment when I found out that this Christmas magic was just a fiction. The spell was broken; the escape from reality that children and adults can share for a few months had gone. Christmas was never the same again. Most children like little believe in Santa Claus. But when do they stop? Perhaps gardeners about 5 6, and some do not stop and up to 7 year olds. Breaking with Santa Claus is like parting with childhood. Do we encourage our children to believe for a long time, or even when they are five, to surrender and reveal their naked truth? Do we believe ourselves? Who is actually Santa? It is not a lie to buy gifts, it is the belief in the good old man who brings to everyone something on Christmas. He is a fairy tale hero who holds the right to believe in the magic of this feast, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Influence Of The Mayan Culture In Southern Mexico In Southern Mexico, the Mayan culture existed from 250 to 900. These people created a calendar based on a philosophy of natural rhythms and is viewed as prophetic. The culture of the Mayans is based on the idea of 13 Heavens , or cycles of creativity, and 9 Underworlds , or consciousness levels. These are often pictured as steps on a pyramid type structure. The 13 Heavens, which are each said to be influenced by a creation deity, are all contained in the Long Count , which was a long period of time tracked by the calendar. This period began in 3114 BC and ended in 2012, when the world was expected by many to end as the calendar came to an end. These 13 Heavens contain 7 odd numbered and 6 even numbered Heavens. • 6. Describe My Defining Moment If you have lived for any length of time, you probably had a defining moment. I experienced my defining moment in the summer of 2010 when I was six years old. You may not think a child that young could have a defining moment, but you would be wrong. Moreover, our experiences as children help to shape our personalities, our outlook on life, and what fears and anxieties we develop. My defining moments happened on a trip to The American Museum of Natural History. There was nothing spectacular about that day; it started out just like any other. My dad planned a trip to the Museum of Natural History. I did not particularly like going to the museum. At that age, I found it boring because there was nothing to do, but stare at things that did not interest me, and that I could not touch or play with. Nevertheless, off we went. When we were only a couple of blocks away, dad said he was afraid we would not be able to find parking close to the museum. Therefore, when he saw a parking space several blocks away, he pulled over and parked. His plan was for us to take the train to the museum. Taking the subway had never been pleasant for me. • 7. Rebeca In Annabel s Mistreatment Of Intersex My first encounter with the term intersex was in the book Annabel. I had happened upon this particular copy when I was stockpiling books from a Borders that was going out of business. Getting around to reading it took awhile, but as soon as I started reading I was hooked staying up most the night to finish. Annabel s story faded in and out of my memory, and I did not encounter the term again until college. In my undergraduate Queer film class we viewed the film XXY Viewing XXY rekindled my interest in intersex people. Doctors and medical literature unabashedly advocate misrepresentation, concealment of facts, and outright lying by the parents (Chase 32). Rebeca had been told elaborate lies her entire life. Her mother and father told her that she had a brother who died at a young age and that all record of him had burned in a fire. Their lies begin to unravel when Rebeca is sent a photo album from her great aunt Mica containing only pictures of Pedrito. The doctors had warned them that Rebeca s new identity should not be threatened in any way. They move to a different country and destroyed everything from Rebeca s old life. This is, again, eerily similar to Chase s story. In her article she writes, Following doctors orders, my parents then changed my name, combed their house to eliminate all traces of my existence as a boy (photographs, birthday cards, ect.), changed my birth certificate, [and] moved to a different town (34). When Rebeca demands to know why they had to operate her mother responds by ask, What people might have said if they saw it [penis]? This makes it clear that the motivation behind the surgery was to escape social ridicule rather than for Rebeca s health. Rebeca is again so infuriated by her mother s answers that she imagines violently hurting her. This is typical of the rage felt by many intersex individuals when they discover the lies they ... • 8. Amadeus Movie Essay The film Amadeus directed by Milos Forman in 1984 was a look in to the interesting and short life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart was considered a child prodigy and genius by possessing qualities such as: composing his first concerto at the age 4, first symphony by the age of seven, his first opera by twelve, being able to just hear a piece of musiconce and being able to play it back perfectly from memory, playing the piano with a blindfold on, or playing the piano upside down and backward. The film was narrated by another composer, Antonio Salieri, who was portrayed has having a love/hate relationship with Mozart. Amadeus may have won best picture in 1984, but did not score as high with historians. There were quite a few events or situations that happened in Amadeus that were portrayed inaccurately. A few ... In several of Mozart s letters, there is evidence that the Italians (supposedly lead by Salieri) in Emperor Joseph s court did get in the way of several attempts to advance Mozart s career, and some of these are portrayed in the film. There is, however, no clear proof that Salieri hated Mozart or plotted against him or planned his death (Fact or Fiction). I found a wide range of views on Mozart s and Salieri s relationship. Some say they were the best of friends, and some said they never actually meet in person, but never once did I come upon any information that there was bad blood between them. The second inaccuracy found was that the film only showed Mozart and Constanze having one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Analysis Of Bartholomew Quot ; An Adult Attachment Model Bartholomew Horowitz (1991) developed an adult attachment model conceptualized through the understanding that a person s image of the self and the other is dichotomized as positive or negative. Through this framework they developed four dimensions, that range from a combination of understanding the self as worthy of loveor not and seeing other people as trustworthy or unreliable. This paper will focus on one dimension, dismissive attachment, and how the behaviors, thoughts, and feelings associated with this group disrupts the fundamental need for meaningful connections to people. Baumeister Leary (1995) developed the Need to Belong Theory, which states that people have a pervasive drive to form and maintain stable interpersonal... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Those experiences with the caretaker are internalized and become a model for attachment expectations in later relationships. Attachment styles provide internal working models through which individuals perceive and relate to the world and to others (Shorey Snyder 2006). The type of attachment style impacts what kinds of internal working models are developed. Subsequently, if an internal working model is seen as dysfunctional, there is the possibility of creating vulnerabilities to the development of psychopathology. Bartholomew Horowitz (1991) also defined the different attachment styles, secure, preoccupied, fearful, and dismissive, according to dependence and avoidance. The researchers defined avoidance as the degree to which people avoid close contact with others as a result of their expectation of aversive consequences; and dependence is defined on a spectrum where those low in dependence represents the establishment of positive self regard internally without the need for validation from others and those high in dependence are only able to internalize positive self regard when they receive constant external validation. When combining the two dimensions, a dismissive attachment style indicates feelings of worthiness combined with a negative regard for other people. As a result of these ways of being, dismissive people protect themselves against being disappointed by avoiding relationships and maintaining independence and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At the age of 10, his father died and his mother left the farm to move to Louisville, Kentucky. They struggled with poverty after that, and he eventually got into acting and filmmaking. When he tries to express his sexuality towards her, she brushes him off, which further enforces the idea that the free blacks are over sexualized. The biggest sense of loyalty from Mammy we see is when she tries to protect her master from union soldiers arresting him for being in the Ku Klux Klan. Gus, the Union Solider, seems to be best associated with brute and coon tendencies, which is characterized by his sexuality towards Flora. The union soldiers in general represent the brutal buck character type because they are seen as violent, uncontrollable and sexualized in the film. Gus, also has coon tendencies, however, in the way his character expresses himself. His eyes are very big and full of expression, and seem to be laughed at a lot. He is used as comic relief in addition to his role as an instigator to the Ku Klux Klan. When he comes onto Flora, he is overly sexual and aggressive towards her. He seems to be out of control as soon as the interaction starts, and ends with a chasing scene through the forest. This goes along with the Moonlight and Magnolia theme that white women are the epitome of beauty, and how frail and delicate they seem. Silas Lynch is also depicted as overly aggressive in his pursuit and proposal to Elsie Stoneman. This represents the fear of miscegenation, as well as rape. The skewed view promotes the domination of women through portrayals of white women and black soldiers. The Stoneman housekeeper, Lydia, is portrayed as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Materialism In Alexander Pope And Pope s Rape Of The Lock The views of women have altered over time, but have always had objectifying tendencies. During the 18th century, cosmetic alteration to natural beauty peaked and materialism heightened throughout societal views. Authors such as Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift vividly spew these views throughout their writings. Pope s Rape of the Lock exposes the materialism used in objectifying women, mainly in the upper class societal levels. The whole plot of the story centers around a cosmetic appearance creating an objectified view, as since the lock of hair was cut from a womans head, the missing lock became, so called, evidence of a man s sexual conquest. Other sexual conquests, forced or not, are spoken with anything but love and only those of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This elevation highly represents the overall theme that materialism plays an almost biblical role in society. The other way to analyze the list is that the Bibles are brought down to the very materialistic level of the other listed cosmetics. Another aspect to note is that Bibles is plainly listed, not the first or last mentioned item, but somewhere in the middle. Both ways conclude that the cosmetic, material items compare at the same level as the Bible s paired along with them. Another list comes with a comparison of paired items that contradict each other s importance; ... Or stain her honor, or her new brocade,/ forget her prayers, or miss a masquerade, / Or lose her heart, or necklace, at a ball;... (Pope II 106 107). The first description used in each line is something of importance, as staining honor, forgetting prayers or losing her heart all have serious implications and consequences. But then those more serious actions are paired with trivial material ones; staining a new brocade, missing a masquerade or losing a necklace at a ball. The material actions paired with important ones really unify them as being on the same level of importance. The contradiction is removed and materialism is elevated. Objectification of women goes hand and hand with materialism. When Pope speaks of the sexual conquests in The Rape of the Lock, he only focuses on the material aspects that result ... • 12. Afro-American Theatre Summary Traylor splits this essay up into distinct sections in order to clearly discuss the two theatrical formats of the origins of Afro American theatre; the minstrel show and the slave narrative. She discusses both as the basis of Negro theatre. Both of these forms are independent of the previous tragedy and comedy genres that the Europeans had created. She discusses the minstrel showand its origins. Traditional masked performance and ritual is a concept African slaves brought with them to America and adapted into a minstrel show. Traylor discusses the farcical caricatures that white people portrayed in the black face adaptations of these minstrel shows. She discusses how these offensive and over dramatic caricatures over shadowed the cultural performance they were trying to display. She goes on to explain that preoccupation with this caricature distracts from the study of the structural elements of the minstrel show that are important to the Afro American dramatic form. Minstrel shows themselves are very elastic in nature and highly improvised. To conclude discussion on minstrel shows she discusses the reason why American s took the format of the minstrel show. She explains that because Americans at... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second Afro American contribution to theatre is the slave narrative. The Escape was performed as a one man story telling show at anti slavery lectures and events. • 13. Effects Of Pecs On Manding And Speech Development For... Another study by Tincani, Crozier, and Alazetta (2006) looked at the effects of PECS on manding and speech development for school aged children. The study had two different parts, the first study involved two children with ASD, and the study wanted to increase the amount of independent manding, displayed when a child exchanges a picture symbol for an object without prompting. The researchers followed the PECS guidelines in a delayed multiple baseline design study, where participant one was taught phases I IV of PECS and participant two was taught phases I and II of PECS. Both participants greatly increased their independent manding over the course of the study, especially as they advanced through the phases of PECS. Participant two required more than twice as many sessions as participant one to meet the acquisition criteria for phases I and II and therefore did not have the opportunity to learn subsequent phases before the experiment ended. Participant two did not use any measurable speech during the study and therefore was not used for study two. Participant one demonstrated only vocal approximations (vocalization that was clearly not the name of the item the participant was manding) instead of word vocalization and participant two did not use any measurable speech during the study. Therefore, neither participant qualified to participate in the second part of the study. (Tincani, Crozier, Alazetta, 2006). The second part of the study performed by Tincani, Crozier, and ... Among the dead were over six million Jews, which was two thirds of the total living race in Europe at the time. I still do not agree with Wilhelm s argument because he had a choice not to follow through with Hitler s wishes but instead signed orders for various ruthless killings and attacks. Keitel knew his actions were really obscene but he chose to go through with them to please Hitler. The judge s final verdict for Wilhelm Keitel was that he is guilty on all four accounts and sentenced to death by hanging. Keitel signed orders for the attacks on the neutral countries of Belgium and the Netherlands. He also ordered the attacks on soldiers in the East that should be met by putting to death fifty to one hundred Communists for one German soldier s death. The judges made the appropriate sentencing for Keitel as he deserved to die for his inhumane war orders. Superior orders, even to a soldier, cannot lessen the crime when the evil doings are committed deliberately and ruthlessly. These kinds of orders Keitel singed off on were just so vicious and cold blooded. Any normal human being in their right mind would not allow for these actions to happen. Finally, Hans Frank was the third accused Nazi who used the defence that he was just following orders. • 19. Comparison Of Bauhaus And Minimalism Throughout history, artists had many different motivations for creating what they did. Some created pieces with religious significance, while others used art as an emotional outlet. The twentieth century carried in a period of artists with new ideas and intentions. Two twentieth century movements, Bauhaus and Minimalism, were not created to be symbolic or emotionally stirring as much of the art of the past had been. Instead, they were movements focused on functionality and simplicity. They disregarded the complex, realistic styles that had been popular throughout history and exchanged it with minimalistic styles. These movements ushered in a style that would heavily impact artists even today. Minimalism was followed very closely by Op Art and Conceptual art, both of which disregarded previous beliefs about what art was and its purpose. Op Art showcased illusions created with skillful tricks of line and shape. Conceptual art focused on idea, giving the concept more power than the actual execution. Despite their obvious visual differences, these four movements had quite a few similarities, including their disregard for the methods and mindset of classical art as well as their extreme simplicities. All of these movements have heavily influenced today s modern artand built upon one another over time. The appendix is a pouch the size of a finger part of the large intestine and placed in the lower right abdomen. It is not yet fully understood its operation, although some theories suggest that it plays a secondary role in the immune system, is the widespread view that it is totally unnecessary. The removal of the appendix does not seem to have any effect on a person s health. What causes appendicitis? Obstruction of the lumen (the inside of the Appendix) can cause appendicitis. The mucus produced recedes into the lumen causing the multiplication of bacteria normally found in the appendix. The consequence is that the appendix swells and becomes infected. Sources of obstruction can be: feces, parasites, abnormal growth of the lymphatic tissue (for example due to the Crohn s disease), foreign bodies or stones (grapes, cherries, peppers) tumors. An inflamed appendix probably burst if not removed. Bursting would spread the infection throughout the abdomen, causing peritonitis. To whom it may happen? Al Pacino s docu drama, Looking for Richard, (henceforth Looking for...) (1996) attempts to bridge that gap through intertextual connections. Which possibly shows that anything can be raw material to the open mind, for it was on those trips that he developed a great fascination with the Lewis and Clark expedition that explored the West when the country was twenty five years old. The men were poorly prepared from the start. They were frequently ill fed and dressed. The soldiers worked for pay of about $5 per month and a land grant of 320 acres. They were led well though. The author holds Meriwether Lewis in high esteem. Jefferson took Meriwether under his wing and into his President s House to be his secretary. Their father son relationship became a deep friendship, and Jefferson chose Lewis to head the expedition. Lewis chose an associate, William Clark, to join him in command. In the preface to his Deutsche Messe und Ordnung (German Mass and Order of Divine Service) of 1526, Luther wrote: For by no means would I have the Latin language completely removed from the divine service, as my chief concern is with the youth. If I could bring to pass that Greek and Hebrew were as familiar to us as the Latin, and offered as much good music and song, we would hold mass, sing and read on successive Sundays in all four languages: German, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Pay structures, regardless of the size of the organization, must have two things going for them, which are external and internal equities. External equity means that your employees are paid fairly in comparison with those in similar jobs in your geographic area. Internal equity means that employees are paid fairly in ... • 36. Social Norms In Society We live in a society of expectations. These expectations subconsciously shape our mannerisms on a day to day basis. Stemming from these controlled mannerisms are social norms. Social norms are the traits that have come to be typical over time because they have been shaped by our surroundings and our everyday interactions. When a norm is broken, society reacts by entering into shock. In a social experiment, I tested the reaction of society when I broke a social norm. For my experiment, I violated a folkway. I went to get my hair cut at my normal salon. This salon is an upscale, boutique blow dry bar and salon. There were many women in there who were getting their hair done. I have been going to that salon for years, and have come to know all of the employees and stylists. I had an appointment with my regular stylist who has cut my hair ever since I was little. I usually always go for a trim of about an inch and a blow dry after. This time, when my stylist asked me what I wanted, I looked her in the eye and said, take it all off. I was asking her to shave my head completely. The reaction of the people in the salon was one of shock. My hairdresser at first, looked at me and laughed as if I was joking. I then had to say, no really, take it all off. This is when she started to look panicked. She then began to question me, are you sure that is what you want? • 37. Why The Reliefs On The Ara Pacis For Matrix Cell 1 The Ara Pacis and the Idealization of Power in the Age of Augustus I am choosing to focus on the imperial portrait reliefs from the Ara Pacis for matrix cell 1 because this monument combines politics, religion and social values. The Ara Pacis Augustae epitomizes the Mos Maiorum, the visual manifestation of Roman virtues and laws. This paper will explain why the reliefs on the Ara Pacis can be considered political propaganda. Furthermore, I will analyze how the art in this monument exhibits the importance of civic piety in Roman politics. The construction of the Ara Pacis was commissioned by the Senate on the 4th of July in13 BC to celebrate the triumphant return of Augustus from his campaigns in Iberia and Gaul after three years of absence. During this time he was forging alliances and organizing the southern provinces of Gaul that would insure the prosperity of Rome. The construction of this monument marks a great period of peace inaugurated by Augustus after a series of political upheavals that scourged Rome following the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC and which lasted until the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. For the first time since Rome began to build her empire, the provinces flourished within the context of the Pax Romana . The reliefs of the Ara Pacis are divided between allegorical and historical panels on the upper register, while the lower register is decorated with acanthus scrolls that symbolize control over nature. The reliefs of the northern and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Quentin Skinner Essay Up for Interpretation or What is This Thing that Hearsay Is Not? is a journal article about how an using the argument of another author in one s work is fine as long as it is an interpretation of the original author s work. Quentin Skinner and Christopher Ricks have different backgrounds in academia and therefore have different approaches to their common claim. Although both authors have the same claim, they approach it from different angles and are able to analyze texts differently. Quentin Skinner s main argument is that the act of interpretation principally consists in trying to identify the nature of the intervention that some given text may be said to constitute (Skinner 1). Skinner is a historian of belief systems prevailing in early modern Europe and treats adaptations as contributions to preexisting texts. Co author Christopher Ricks has a different main argument than Skinner. Ricks main argument is about texts and editing and exactly what was written (Ricks 5). Ricks forms his argument from a literary viewpoint rather than a philosophical viewpoint like his co author Skinner. Skinner develops his claim by referring to Machiavelli s The Prince. He analyzes how Machiavelli quotes Cicero s argument and challenges it. Skinner states what is required is nothing more than an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 39. Similarities Between Harrisonson Hargeron And Harrison... 2081 PROJECT How can we tell if a character in a book is a Christ figure? Harrison Bergeron is an appropriate example. He went through and done things that Christ had done such as being persecuted for his faith, carried a beam of wood on his shoulders, and came to rescue the unqualified world. Harrison was taken away from home and went through series of rough treatment. He was terrorized for his beliefs, as with Jesus when He suffered the same way. In addition, the story reads, he wore earphones that dulled his intelligence, weights that strapped him to decrease his strength, wavy glasses that made him half blind, and a wooden beam on his shoulders to cut his mobility. At the end, Harrison was relatively different between the story and the movie although there were similarities. The differences between George Bergeron and I are striking, and we deserve a thorough investigation. We are separate in two ways: intelligence quotient and physical appearance. George lives with his wife, Hazel in an era where there s nothing, but equality. His son, Harrison was taken away by the HG men, due to his mental and physical potential. In both story and the movie, George is shown to have handicaps and earphones, signally that he is mentally more capable of having an extremely high intelligence quotient; while I on the other hand, does have an average intelligence quotient, but not as smart or as elevated as George. And George, while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap radio in his ear. It is not very clear that George is fairly aged in the story, but the movie says else wise. In my head, it seemed as if George was younger than the movie version of him. Through the movie, George is physically displayed as a balding, aged man with the looks of a seventy or an eighty year old man. George often goes into deep thought about various things that in which can get him shocked from the Government. On the other hand, I love to go into deep thought ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
