Hrothgar In Beowulf
TV cameras have a knack for only picking up the good things world leaders do. These shots are meant
to paint someone like the US President in a positive light. It turns out even epics from Anglo Saxon
times would do everything they could to make their kings seem great and generous, but as with
everything else there is a side not seen by the public eye. In the epic of Beowulf a king named
Hrothgar is seen on the outside as the greatest and most generous king the land had ever seen, but on
the inside he is much more human. Hrothgar like all great leaders comes with many flaws. He is very
similar to current and past world leaders and brings a new meaning to the word great. Despite being
thought about in a positive light he certainly has his warts. These include his heavy drinking habit, a
lack of self control, and no desire whatsoever to be king of the Danes. ... Show more content on

The early cantos in the textual iteration of Beowulf describe Hrothgar of this great and generous king.
A whole column is used to describe his generous deeds, such as harboring Beowulf s father in his
darkest hour. There s one scene in particular in which the cantos depiction and the movie s depiction
are incredibly different. It comes when Hrothgar throws a party the night before Beowulf s battle with
Grendel. In the cantos Hrothgar seems to be in control and enjoying everyone s company, none more
so than his lovely wife Wealtheow. However in the film Hrothgar seems to be forcing himself upon his
wife, who doesn t seem to enjoy her marriage in the first place. During the films interpretation of the
party Hrothgar seems to be ridiculously intoxicated, slurring his speech and stumbling all around
Heorot. It is this drastic difference that makes a person realize that maybe Hrothgar is not as great as it
seems, but that s not

Analysis Of Nathaniel Hawthorne s Scarlet Fever
Nathaniel Hawthorne Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804 in Salem Massachusetts. His
father died of yellow fever when he was 4 years old and left behind a wife and 3 children. Hawthorne
was raised by an abnormal and solitary mother. He had a leg injury at a young age, which left him not
being able to move for months (Biography) . His leg injury, on the other hand, did not get in the way
of what he was dreaming of doing growing up. During the time of his leg injury, Hawthorne
developed an interest in reading and writing. He grew up being an enthusiastic reader of poetry and
exotic adventure stories. Hawthorne had to overcome a lot of obstacles growing up to become a writer.
Despite losing a father and having a leg injury at such a young age, Hawthorne became a successful
writer of the American Romantic period. Thanks to his uncles, Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College
in Maine. His uncles paid for his college tuition there. He attended the college when he was 17 years
old and spent 4 years there. At the college, he met and made friends with Franklin Piece and Henry
Wadsworth (Biography) . While he was attending college, Hawthorne missed his family so much and
returned home to Salem after graduation (Biography) . He stayed in Salem for 12 years. He came back
to Salem not only to spend time with his family, but to spend time studying puritan history and
develop his writing skills. During his 12 year stay in Salem, Hawthorne wrote a few books. He wrote a

Surprised By Hope Analysis
In the book Surprised by Hope by N. T. Wright, he discusses salvation, the new creation, what our
bodies will be like after Christ returns. Will the heavens come down to earth or will humans go up to
heaven? These are all points that Christians need to ask themselves and begin to think about. He lays
these topics out in clear, concise ways so the reader can comprehend what his points are. All
throughout his book, the theme of a new heaven and new earth are constantly being thrown around.
Wright uses Philippians 3:20 that says, But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a
Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ to back up his claim that ... (he) will come from heaven to
earth, to change the present situation and state of his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Wright, they will be immortal. He puts it like this, In particular, this new body will be
immortal. That is, it will have passed beyond death not just in the temporal sense but also the
ontological sense of no longer being subject to sickness, injury, decay, and death itself (160) This
means that we are going to have stronger, healthier, more perfect bodies that God will give us as a gift
of love. We may not even look the same, something will be different about our bodies. In fact, when
Jesus was resurrected from the dead the disciples did not recognize him. This was a man whom they
had worked for years with and for, yet they did not recognize him in the new body. Wright claims that
this immorality is different than the common idea of immorality. He says that people believe
immorality has to do with souls, not bodies. After I read this, I immediately disagreed with that,
because I have only thought of immorality of souls living forever, not bodies. After I had thought over
this statement a bit more, I found myself agreeing with it. In fact, 2 Corinthians 5:4 says, While we
live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it s not that we want to die and get rid of these
bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be
swallowed up by life. I knew that verse, yet I still never made the connections in my head. While our
earthly bodies do not go up to heaven, I believe our souls do until the Lord returns and then we will be
raised with our new bodies. If we die before the Lord returns, then we will be with the Lord in heaven,
yet not complete until he returns to the earth. One thing that Wright says that I do not agree with is,
...immortality is something that only God possesses by nature and that then he shares, as a gift of
grace rather than an innate possession, with his people (161). I believe that everyone will live forever,

Heritage as an Idea of Oneself in Bless Me Ultima and The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in
Heaven
Traveling through humanity is a never ending story. Traveling through ethnicity is an ever changing
journey. Is race or culture a matter of color? Is it a way of life; or a decision an individual makes? Is it
an idea one has of themselves? In the novels, Bless Me Ultima (Anaya 1972) and The Lone Ranger
and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven (Alexie 1993), two different minority characters, Tony and Victor, give
voice to their journey of growing up and finding their place in the world in regards to their heritage.

Given these two choices, Tony feels he must choose between them. Anaya introduces Tony to a
different culture, as he enters school; there he meets the white dominant culture head on. Tony, now
blends a third culture into his life. Tony s heritage offers him two ways of being a Spanish Mexican
American; in Alexie s novel, Victor strives to be an Indian, period. Victor s culture, being different
from Tony s, breeds different cultural problems. Victor, a Native American Indian, in Sherman Alexie
s The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, searches daily for ways to survive being Indian.
Victor lives in a white world that continually divests him of the privilege of his heritage daily. The
ordinary daily erosion damages Victor and the Native American the most. Alexie writes, . . . it s almost
like Indians can easily survive the big stuff. Mass murder, loss of language and land rights. It s the
small things that hurt the most. The white waitress who wouldn t take an order, Tonto, the Washington
Redskins (Alexie 49). Victor needs to learn to survive the daily ness, the ordinary and wants someone
to show him how and says: . . . I have] to find out what it mean[s] to be Indian, and there ain t no self
help manuals for that . . . (Alexie 211). As Victor wanders through the Native American cultural maze,
somewhat aimlessly and alone, Tony is

What Is The Snapchat-Personal Narrative
When March 5th finally arrived we had a lot of preparations to tend to. We were pretty sure the Mack
s would leave at night, they told Alex they had a family birthday party to go to. Unlike past Fight
Nights no invitations were sent out, everyone was invited. We posted Alex s address on all forms of
social media that morning. I then went to Alex s in the middle of the afternoon to help him set up for
the night. We moved couches, and set up the basement for optimal viewing. Now all we had to do was
wait for the Macks to leave. We hung around the house for the rest of the day but right around dinner
time I left to make it less obvious and met Katie Peters and Hannah Bouas at subway for dinner. Alex

We expected that the only fight that night would be Chandler vs. Brendan, that was definitely not the
case. Before the main event there were six other fights. We had attracted a lot of the seniors to Fight
Night X and they were definitely down for fighting. These minor fights included, Alex Mack vs. Zach
Diecker, Luke Worley vs. Blake Metcalf, Max Kemper vs. Collin Goveia, Michael Smith vs. Austin
Sweet, Square vs Joe Wolf, Bryce Rutledge vs. Parker McDonald all leading up to the main event.
Will Hogan had been taking cash bets throughout the night and Brendan was the heavy favorite. (Our
event had turned from an underground fight club to an underground fight club with illegal gambling)
Brendan was the favorite due to his size and the fact that he was getting shipped off to Army basic
training in just a few months. But, he was a wild card, like I stated earlier he was not part of our friend
group so we had never seen him fight. This was unlike Chandler who was a Fight Night veteran with a
side of batshit crazy when it came to wrestling. After a crowd pumping introduction from Joe Wolf the
most historic fight in Fight Night history was

Cerebral Palsy Research Paper
There are four types of Cerebral Palsy: Spastic, Dyskinesia, Ataxic, and Mixed. Spastic is the most
common form (NINDS.gov, 2017). Spastic is classified as stiffness in the muscles and awkward
movements. Spastic cerebral palsy is further classified by the main affected body areas. Spastic
Hemiplegia/Hemiparesis affects the arms, hands, and sometimes the legs of one side of the body. This
can lead to the affected side being shorter and thinner. Persons afflicted tend to walk with a gait if they
walk at all and develop scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine. Spastic Diplegia/Diparesis
affects the legs and is less severe in the arms and face. Those with this form of CP have tightness in
their leg muscles and require walkers and leg braces.

Swenson 88 97).
The non pear tree represents the individual in this part of the poem.
The tree has nothing wrong with it, infact its only difference is that it has no pears.
It is fairly tall tree sturdy, capable looking... exceptionally pleasing, ( Swenson 9 14).
Because the tree is different from its surroundings, it is faced with discrimination and judgement.
When a person is judged as different and described as horrible just because of the way they look,
The personal price that the tree pays is that it more prone and open to the judgement of those who are
conformists.

Critical theory , in terms of literature, can be defined as a form of criticism through the close reading
of a text and the application of knowledge acquired from the study of the humanities. The multiple
readings mentioned in the question refers to the different schools of literary criticism for example,
structuralism, feminist theory, new historicism/cultural materialism, ecocriticism and postcolonial
criticism. It is true to say that Wordsworth s I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud can be read and interpreted
in many different ways, especially when both the original and revised versions of the poem are taken
into account. In my opinion, the most interesting criticism that can be applied to this poem is
structuralism, which I will be analysing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Revolt Of Mother
American Realism: The Movement American Realism is defined as a literary movement in which the
author focused on writing about life as it actually was. Realist authors, such as William Dean Howells,
Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, and Charles Chesnutt, wrote about common life experiences rather than on
how one wanted their life to be like. The whole movement of American Realism involved a transition
of the reader s mind from the previous movement, American Romanticism. American Romanticism
focused on the ideal lifestyle involving imagination and emotion. Realistic author s purpose in their
writing was to get people to view life as it was when they woke up in the morning. This is only one
characteristic to define a work as realistic. Other characteristics ... Show more content on

Wilkins Freeman s, the author of The Revolt of Mother, purpose in writing this story was to bring
awareness to feminism, which could also be the Cult of Domesticity. The Cult of Domesticity was a
collection of attitudes that associated true womanhood with the home and family. Women were to
manage their homes, children, and husbands. They were not allowed to engage in hard labor, political
life, nor eth competitive individualism of the industrial economy, just like feminism. In the story,
Mother wants to know why were there men digging in the field and after she kept asking Father, he
told her that they were building a cellar for a new barn. She asked him why he would build a barn
when they needed a house but he did not answer and he left. She asked her son, Sammy, what was
Father going to do with the barn and he told her that Father was going to buy four cows. Her actions
of washing the dishes vigorously made it known that she was upset but she did not say a word. While
washing dishes, her daughter, Nanny, asks her if she thought it was too bad that Father was building a
new barn as much as they needed a house. Mother tells her that they are women and women know
only what men folks think we do, so far as any use of it goes, an how we d ought to reckon men folks

it s not a woman s place to question a man about his work even if she disagrees. After dinner Mother
had a talk with Father about a new house versus a new barn. She stood her ground on why they needed
another house by pointing out the flaws in the current house such as limited space. Father did not
answer Mother s question of whether he thought it was right to build another barn when they needed a

Angry Black White Boy
In Adam Mansbach s Angry Black White Boy (ABWB), the protagonist, Macon Detornay, is a white
male who is obsessed with black culture and angry with white Americans. Macon moved to New York
City for college and began a crime spree of robbing white people who rode in his taxicab. The city of
New York went on a search for the black man who was supposedly robbing these people. Eventually,
Macon s true skin color is revealed and he decides to use his newfound fame to discuss the evils of
white people. Macon then founded the Race Traitor Project. This idea was for guilty white people and
liberals to be a part of what he called a Day of Apology, in which white people were to apologize for
the hundreds of years of oppression they put minorities through. The Day of Apology ended up
causing a major riot, which led Macon to decide how committed he was to the Race Traitor Project.
Adam Mansbach used ABWB as a means to shed light on institutional racism and what can be done to
end it.
Institutional racism is a concept that many people hear about today, but no one wants to really discuss.
Avram Bornstein s Institutional Racism argues that there needs to be a distinction between the racial
bias and institutional racism due to the recent law enforcement encounters in New York. According to
Bernstein, police motivation is not necessarily biased by numbers, but careerist through stopping and
arresting in parts of town with high crime. These high records of arrests and stops is seen

The Killer Angels By John M. Skipper Essay
History 1301 John M. Skipper
The Killer Angels is a historic backstory of the days leading up to the Civil War. The story is told from
multiple viewpoints including Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, George Meade, and Winfield Scott
Hancock. It is mentioned the Army of Northern Virginia is moving behind the Blue Ridge Mountains,
and that the Army of Potomac is also moving, but is traveling very slow. This is one of the
characteristics which plagued them throughout the war. Shaara gives insight to the background of both
Armies. He described the Confederates as a unified group with soldiers of the same background, while
the Union is the exact opposite. Its men are very divided soldiers fighting for unification. There is one
similarity between the two sides which stands out more than all the others; both sides are ready for the
final showdown. Shaara gives insight into this by hinting towards the conflict, yet never telling the
reader directly. This causes the reader to be drawn deeper into the story anticipating what will happen
next.
There are illustrations showing movement of the Confederate and the Union armies, an epilogue, and
an afterword stating the events after the Battle of Gettysburg. In the foreword, Sharra tells the reader
the purpose of the book is to educate the reader on the history of the battle, but also give insight into
the soldier s thoughts. Sharra also writes that out of all the historic writings about the battle, he chose

A Report On The Show Stoppers
In light of the facts provided the show stoppers that stem to mind are in relation to the dismissal of the
underwriter from the syndicate; depth of analyst research; low expense ratio; and timing. Ordinarily,
where an underwriter is involved in a public or private offering the importance of undertaking a proper
due diligence is paramount as it provides a complete defense, against a strict liability, under section 11
and 12 of the Securities Act 1933.
There isn t enough time to ensure enough is done to establish due diligence defence, and as for the low
expense ratio in comparison to the industry this would be the primary show stopper, in conjunction
with the timing of dismissal of the other underwriter, and heightened liability exposure risk section 11
and 12 of the Securities Act 1933. Summarily, where the low expense ratio red flag is concerned the
court in WorldCom (discussed further below) mentioned that a jury would entitled to find the
discrepancy sufficient to have a triggered a duty to investigate the reliability of the figures underlying
the ratio, notwithstanding that those figures had been audited. It would not be foreseeable for the
client to undertake this process within the 72 hours available, and avail itself of the due diligence
defense.
Further Analysis: due diligence
Given that the issuer is a WKSi, there is a heightened due diligence risk where the offering is a shelf

The Federal Reserve ( Investopedia ) Essay
In 1913, the United States Congress created the world s most powerful monetary system, called the
Federal Reserve (Investopedia). It involves one central agency and twelve regional Federal Reserve
Banks that are accountable for their designated areas in the United States (Investopedia). Its primary
purpose was to establish a secure, malleable, and a solid financial system which was to prevent
financial devastation during times of crisis (Investopedia). More specifically, prior to the creation of
the Federal Reserve Bank, the United States had bouts of crisis that created panic among the citizens.
In utter terror, people would withdraw their funds from their banks causing a domino effect of
financial institutions being pushed out of business due to a deficiency of money (stlouisfed).
Therefore, the Federal Reserve Act was endorsed as a resolution to crisis periods, providing a money
supply that would balance the economy, and introduce Federal Reserve Notes as a form of new
currency (stlouisfed). In essence, the Federal Reserve became fully responsible for developing a
comprehensive banking system that would allow for a strong economy. Therefore, one must
understand the structure, the function, and the future of the Federal Reserve Bank that continues to
financially secure this great country. First, one must understand the structure of the Federal Reserve

Moral Conflict and Internal Change in Antigone
Beliefs are not always based on facts that you would find in a textbook they are something that one
believes is true. When I first read Sophocles play Antigone, my initial impression of Creon was that
his beliefs of the law and the state were rational because of his role as a ruler. But as the play
progressed, I began to disagree with his behavior and his values because he only focused on his own
moral beliefs rather than considering the beliefs of other people, which could have resolved conflict.
Throughout the play, the theme of authority of the state and religion is represented through the
individual beliefs of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I strongly disagree with Zizek because she is viewed as promoting an authority of herself only because
of the gender conflict between men and women. Because of Antigone s role as a woman in the Theban
culture, she is viewed as demanding and stubborn against Creon s order. But if it were to be a man
who opposed Creon, he would be seen as courageous and assertive. Additionally, Antigone justifies
her position by claiming that it is her moral duty to bury Polyneices because the last of her kin are
gone. She accuses Creon by calling him a tyrant: I never heard it was Zeus Who made that
announcement. And it wasn t justice, either. The gods below Didn t lay down this law for human use.
And I never thought your announcements Could give you a mere human being Power to trample the
gods unfailing, Unwritten laws, (450 456). By Antigone burying Polyneices, she gains the respect and
support of people who also believe in honoring the dead and respecting the gods.
After Eteocles and Polyneices die in battle, Creon was the next of kin to rule the people of Thebes.
After rising to power, he immediately undergoes the destructive effects of power. As a result of this, he
becomes irrational in his thoughts and decisions and consequently, he abuses his power. For instance,
Creon arrests Ismene solely based on the reason that

How Culture Affects Financial Reporting And Auditing With...
Abstract In today s society, the international trading constitutes an increasingly significant portion of
the world economy than ever before. Having opened more subsidiaries in different countries and
invested in foreign markets, companies and investors are more exposed to problems reading
accounting records and auditing reports composed under different accounting principles. To better
understand the reason behind the accounting diversity, we need to dig into countries different cultural
background which imposes great influence on formation of accounting and auditing principles and
ways people practice. This paper will analyze how culture affects financial reporting and auditing with
the support of classic culture theories and facts. Introduction International accounting, a term given
birth by modern society, is a concept which encompasses all function areas of various accounting
principles and practices followed by every nation in the world. The international accounting consists
of three different levels. First level is the supranational level which signifies principles, standards and
guidelines of accounting, auditing and taxation issued by supranational organizations such as UN,
OECD and IFA (International accounting, Timothy and Hector, 2011, P1). The second level is the
company level which denotes the principles and techniques that people follow to report transactions
and evaluate foreign companies performance. The third level, the broadest one, can be viewed as the

There are many sports out in the world. There are also two in particular whose name is the same
internationally as one of our own sports here in America. Can you guess it? That s right football. The
sport we call soccer was originally called association football but started recently in the 20th century.
The new term was not popular at first it was doubted because it was spelled Socker In support of this
theory, Szymanski cites a 1905 letter to the editor of The New York Times from Francis Tabor of New
York, who warned of the spreading heresy of the word socker so he suggested soccer a little fad that
the Oxford and Cambridge students starting putting er at the end of many words, such as foot er, sport
er, and as Association did not take an er easily, it was, and is, sometimes spoken of as Soccer.America
chose to change and the world did not. The American game football was called football because
simply because the players have to use their feet. Even though these sports have the same name and
originated from the same sport, Rugby, They have many differences as well such as the ball,
gameplay, and their means of protection. The game ball for these sports very in ways more than one. A

Marcel Mauss s Indian Gift
Gift giving, particularly during the holidays, is regular facet of our daily lives. Whether or not all gifts
carry the obligation of reciprocity is characterized by the gift s cultural context. The Gift: The Form
and the Reason for Exchange in Archaic Societies, (1925) Marcel Mauss ethnographic book, presents
the necessity of reciprocation through analysing the gift giving practices of the Maori and the
Kwakiutl. Jonathan Parry revisits Mauss theory in his essay, The Gift, the Indian Gift and the Indian
Gift , (1986) addressing its connection as well as contradiction to the Hindu law of gift giving.
Ultimately, Mauss and Parry propose differing perspectives on the obligation to reciprocate when
given a gift. Their opposing conclusions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The obligation to reciprocate is based on the belief that the recipient receives and possesses something
that belongs to the donor (Mauss 1925: 17). In reciprocating a gift, Mauss explains that the receiver
balances and restores the hau of the first gift to its origin (Mauss 1925: 15 17). Moreover, the potlatch,
the North American Indian practice of exchanging gifts competitively, is characterized by themes of
rivalry and destruction, requiring one to reciprocate or risk losing authority (Mauss 1925: 11 12). In
Northeast Siberia and among the Eskimos of West Alaska, the exchange of gifts is imbued with
additional spiritual significance (Mauss 1925: 18 19). In destroying by sacrifice, as in the potlach, the
people are fulfilling their obligations to the gods, to whom they owe their use of the land (Mauss
1925: 20 21). Marcel Mauss asserts this exchange of gifts between the humans and the gods is a
necessary element of buying peace between them (Mauss 1925: 21). Mauss argues that reciprocation
is a mandatory element of gift giving because of the social contract that is formed by the first gift,
which contains in it the donor s spirit (Mauss 1925: 14 21). We can see Mauss theory at work today in
western society when we obligated to bring back gifts from a holiday for a friend who has already
done the same for us. This pressure is the result of the need to restore the balance in the social contract
that Mauss

Representation Of Hamlet
The theatrical representation of Hamlet is one of mystery, action, character development, but most
importantly, tragedy. A considerable amount of people hold a common belief that the play, Hamlet, by
William Shakespeare is a tragedy, due to the fact that all the main characters perish at the end of the
play. An individual might take this stance on this argument upon first hearing. However, the reality of
the situation is that there are numerous parts of the play that show that this statement is not only
incorrect, but an oversimplified version of the bigger truth. Further investigation into this topic will
reveal that, in fact, the decisions the characters make throughout the duration of the play is where the
true tragedy builds up. At first, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As with Ophelia s tragedy, Laertes suffers a tragedy of being deceived and used by Claudius as a
result of Hamlet s impulsive behavior as well, further assuring that the tragedy exhibits itself in the
conclusions drawn by the characters in the story. The tragedy inside Laertes that is the causation of
Hamlet s killing of Polonius is evident through the scene where Laertes confronts Claudius on why he
did not punish Hamlet for his malicious act. Claudius then goes on to trick Laertes into plotting
against Hamlet, and Laertes proclaims, And so I have a noble father lost;/A sister driven into desperate
terms/Whose worth. if praises may go back again,/Stood challenger on mount of all the age/For her
perfections. But my revenge will come (4.7.27 31.) At this moment in time, it can be seen that while
Laertes expresses his emotions of rage, he is being manipulated by Claudius, as well as how the
dramatic purpose shows character development, as the tragic outcome of being tricked like this for
personal gain stems from that of how Hamlet s actions had resulted in the loss of his father, which was
ultimately one of Hamlet s rash decisions. Upon closer look, the place where tragedy lies is not only
where all the characters die, but where the outcomes of the decisions the characters make throughout
the course of the play, such as when Hamlet commits homicide towards Polonius, or how Claudius
can cause tragedies with the way he lives his as

Me Knife Diamond And Flower Analysis
A piece of art I really liked at the El Paso Art Museum was Me, Knife, Diamond and Flower created
by James Surles in 1999. This piece is three dimensional and made out of pine, poplar and fabricated
stainless steel. The first thing I noticed was the big knife so immediately I was drawn to go see what it
was all about. I found it be very expressive because it definitely made me feel a little creeped out that
there was a knife, leaving me to wonder if this was about a murder, or trying to tell a story of some
kind. The woodcut flower and knife I think was a great touch to the piece so it differentiates them
from the diamond and the face. The composition of this art piece shows depth with the face and
diamond up front, to the knife behind it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was another three dimensional piece of work that caught my eye, but not for its beauty. This
piece stood out because it was hideous and dull. The first thought that came into my mind was what
the hell is that? I am not too sure if this it was supposed to be a witch s hat or a limbless and leafless
tree but is ugly. This piece had a lot of texture ranging from very smooth looking to extremely bumpy
which I did not feel was appealing whatsoever. It looked like someone just starting hitting it from to
create dimples. There was no real pattern, repetition or rhythm to the texture. The higher you looked
up on the piece, the more texture that appeared in the surface. The bottom of the sculpture had a lot
more smoother and finer texture to it. I saw this piece just shortly after I saw Me, Knife, Diamond and
Flower which really had my mind stimulated in a positive manner and then I stumbled across this
piece which changed my mood almost instantly. I was sad to see such an emotionless piece right after
seeing James Surles and I felt like I wasted time in my life just staring at it. I decided to Google what
Rolo meant and in Latin America it means stick. In no shape or form do I see a stick in the artwork. I
would assume that it is not supposed to portray a stick and am left to wonder what it could. Is it
supposed to represent something? Is it symbolic? I can honestly not tell you for sure as there is little

Essay on Traditional vs Distance Education
Education is an essential element in societies throughout the world. For many years education has
been provided in classrooms on campuses worldwide, but there has been a change made to the
conventional method of classroom learning. With the advancements in technology, education has been
restructured so that it may be accessible to everyone through taking courses online. Distance learning
takes place when the teacher and student are separated from one another due to their physical location
and technology is used to communicate instructions to the student and to communicate feedback to the
instructor. The virtual classroom is one of the various forms of technology used as an alternative to the
traditional classroom settings. Other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Fox (1998), what is in dispute is not whether distance education is ideal, but whether it
is good enough to merit a university degree, and whether it is better than receiving no education at all.
He alludes to an argument that states students learn far too little when the teacher s personal presence
is not available because the student has more to learn from the teacher than the texts. Thus, in order
for the student to be taught well, does the teacher have to be personally present?
Many advocates of distance education are ardent about their venue and very critical of traditional
education. These online education devotees view traditional classes as being unchangeable, inflexible,
teacher centered, and static (Fitzpatrick 2001). However, proponents argue that many simply would
not be able to get a degree without distance education—the full time police officer, the mother of four,
or the individual living in a rural area approximately 100 200 miles away from any educational
institution. Many individuals desperately need distance education courses because they have jobs,
families, civic responsibilities. They are thirsting. But some want us to say, Sorry you don t want to
drink the water there, but we can t bottle our fresh spring water, so you ll have to come here or drink
nothing (Fox, 1998, p. 5). Proponents contend that distance education is as good as traditional
education. In other words, learning occurs

An Analysis Of Paul Robeson s The Power Of Negro Action
TITLE goes here
This paper shall proceed as follows; I will begin exploring first the essay by Paul Robeson and
highlighting some of the most striking and interesting facets, followed by the chapter from Rhonda
Williams where I will explore the connections to the chapter by Robeson, and lastly I will look at the
essay from Andrea Friedman, where I will further note interesting facets of the reading as well as
create ties to the aforementioned works. Paul Robeson s chapter The Power of Negro Action is rather
straightforward from the outset. Robeson is presenting an empowering piece, which has several
subsections relating to the central theme of collectivized action on the behalf of black people. One of
the more interesting aspects of this chapter comes from the way in which Robeson calls for black
people to use their agency to better their position. From the outset Robeson states, I say that Negro
action can be decisive. I say that we ourselves have the power to end terror and to win for ourselves
peace and security throughout the land (Robeson, 90). The interesting aspect of this quote is the fact
that the paragraph proceeding it establishes the historical precedent of blacks not necessarily enacting
the full degree of their agency. However, Robeson s call proclaiming the power of black agency
contrasts this and shows a progression toward the growing sentiments of blacks having more power
than dominant society would like to portray. Robeson exclaims that the power that

The Beatles Downfall
The Beatles are one of the most recognizable names in the music industry. Anyone can easily
recognize songs that have been performed by The Beatles. The band s popularity hasn t always been
by its side boosting them to the top. The Beatles lack of popularity is what caused Dick Rowe, Decca
Record executive, to make one of the most regrettable decisions of his life. To really look at whether
Rowe had made the wrong choice at the time based on what he knew, it is important to look at the
time period during which he made his decision and to look at who The Beatles were at that time, more
specifically January 1, 1962. When looking at Dick Rowe and why he made the decision he made, it s
useful to look at Decca Records history. Decca didn t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Astronomy a Science, Astrology a Pseudo-Science
The word science probably brings many different pictures into your mind, some being: a fat textbook,
white lab coats, microscopes, an astronomer looking through a telescope, a naturalist in the rainforest,
Einstein s equations scribbled on a board, the launch of the space shuttle, bubbling beakers.... All of
those images reflect some aspect of science, but none of them provides a full picture of what science
completely is. Science is defined to be the knowledge attained through study or practice, or knowledge
covering general truths of the operation of general laws, especially as obtained and tested through
scientific method and concerned with the physical world.
According to the TOK book, astronomy is considered a science and astrology a pseudo science. Do
you agree? Before I start discussing this statement, we should know what science, pseudo science and
astronomy, astrology really is. Science is the pursuit and application of knowledge and understanding
of the natural and social world following a systematic methodology based on evidence. pseudo science
is a concept that is considered to be science but it does not have enough evidence to go along side with
it and prove the concept to be right. Astronomy is a science that studies everything outside of the earth
s atmosphere, such as planets, stars, asteroids, galaxies; and the properties and relationships of those
celestial bodies. Astronomers base their studies on research and observation. Astrology on the other

Gender Stereotypes In The L Word
The L Word in one of the rare examples of a television show that centers itself on characters that fall
outside of the straight male hegemony; this is true from the introductory shots of the show. After doing
a series of setting establishing shots of LA, the camera pans across a typical suburban street, and
image that immediately invokes the idea of the typical mom and with with their kids, American
nuclear family. The next scene introduces the first character, a muscular, straight, white, cis man in a

By allowing the viewer to see this character once again, it gives them a familiar face to identify with.
As Mulvey suggests, most visual media is meant for white men to identify with, this type of character
gives the short allusion that the television show is going to be this same type of experience: a show
directed at straight white men. However, it quickly flips the script on this as the next scene, in which
we receive the shows first dialogue, depicts one of the women from the bed, named Tina, standing in
front of a mirror, looking at an ovulation test. Mulvey writes about what is called the mirror phase,
The mirror phase occurs...with the result that his recognition of himself is joyous in the he imagines
his mirror image to be a more complete, more perfect than he experiences his own body. Recognition
is thus mislaid with mis recognition: the image recognized is conceived as the reflected body of self,
but its mis recognition as superior projects (60). This quote describes a stage of identity in
psychoanalysis in which a child first recognizes themselves in a mirror, and can therefore imagine
themselves as more than a reflection of their mother s face even though the image is a
misrepresentation in it s incompleteness (Mulvey 60). This concept is directly applicable to this scene,
as the character standing in front of the mirror represents a stage of identification for the viewer. By
seeing the character reflected in the mirror the viewer receives a more complete image of her, is forced
into this step of self identification; thus, the audience directly cued that they are supposed to identify
with this character, rather than the male character that was shown

Antidepressants Should Be Treated Using Talk Therapy
I feel trapped , I feel empty , I feel hopeless and numb , are all ways that people have described their
depression. Usually this would be followed with going to the doctor and expressing how the person
feels and then the doctor prescribing an antidepressant. The question that stands is does everyone on
antidepressants actually need to be on antidepressants? Antidepressants should be reserved for the
cases and people who really need them rather than someone who has situational depression,
premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or even seasonal affective disorder, all types of depression that can
be treated using talk therapy rather than medication (Illiades, 7 Side Effects of Antidepressants).
Depression is a chemical imbalance of the brain, usually when the part of the brain that produces
serotonin produces the chemical in lower quantities (Rivas). Every year Americans consume more anti
depressants than any other nation in the world and from the years 1988 1994, the use of anti
depressants increased by 400% (Ross). Statistically speaking, women have a 70% chance of
developing depression over men and about 13% of the women who have children would develop
postpartum depression (Holms). There is no doubt that depression impacts a large amount of people
and affects the wallets of those with depression. Globally, 350,000,000 people suffer from some form

Research Paper On Low Self Esteem
Low self esteem. What it can do to our minds and how can we improve it? Self esteem is when people
don t like certain aspects of themselves. Peoples self esteem is something that isn t brought up a lot.
However it should be. People don t really understand what low self esteem can do to our minds even
our health. Self esteem is our confidence and satisfaction in our own skin. Low self esteem can cause
someone to not like certain aspects our their body. It can cause them not to like themselves at all
wishing they were someone else, that they were skinner, taller and prettier. We all have something we
would like to change, but this is far more serious. It s to the point they feel as if they won t be happy
or people won t think they re pretty/handsome enough or good enough. With low self esteem it can
cause a person to have a large amount of rancor towards themselves. Low self esteem has been shown
to be correlated with a number of negative outcomes, such as depression ( McLeod 1 ).Without self
esteem or self confidence we will not feel comfortable in the body and flesh we were born with. Low
self esteem goes unnoticed way too often. My goal throughout this paper is to help people with low
self esteem know that they re not alone, they aren t the only ones who may not feel pretty in their skin

The Function of Punishment Essay
The Function of Punishment
Justice must not only be done but seen to be done . Most would agree with this statement the wicked
must surely be punished (or should they? do two wrongs make a right?) but why is it so important that
the punishment must be seen to be done? To the utilitarian the answer is simple punishment must be
witnessed in order to deter others from committing the same act. Thus, to a utilitarian the perception
of punishment is seen as the main, or even the sole, justification for punishment. Of course, if the
wrongdoer is sent to prison for any length of time he is incapacitated, and thus excluded from doing
further harm. Further, while being punished there may be at least ... Show more content on

Taking that, by definition, punishment involves inflicting some kind of pain on the offender, the ideas
of reform and incapacitation are largely seen as secondary to the main purpose of punishment to deter.
The most well known proponents of utilitarianism have almost always justified punishment in terms
of its deterrent effect. Bentham, for example, argued that apparent justice was everything, and real
justice was essentially irrelevant. And John Stuart Mill, in defending the death penalty, stated that to
deter by suffering by inflicting suffering is not only possible, but the very purpose of penal Justice.
(Mill 1868). This leads to one of the main criticisms of the utilitarian argument, namely the denial that
there is any moral justification for punishment other than preventing further suffering. This argument
seems counter intuitive surely the wrongdoer must get his just deserts? What would justice mean if
some wrongdoers were to go unpunished simply because no deterrent effect could be demonstrated?
Conversely, and more seriously, there would certainly be occasions when innocent men would have to
be punished for the sake of the greater good for example, in that case where an atrocious crime has
been committed and the authorities failed to find the perpetrator

Why Is The Industrial Revolution Harmful
The Industrial Revolution was a time period between the 1800s and the 1900s where there was many

  • 2. Hrothgar In Beowulf TV cameras have a knack for only picking up the good things world leaders do. These shots are meant to paint someone like the US President in a positive light. It turns out even epics from Anglo Saxon times would do everything they could to make their kings seem great and generous, but as with everything else there is a side not seen by the public eye. In the epic of Beowulf a king named Hrothgar is seen on the outside as the greatest and most generous king the land had ever seen, but on the inside he is much more human. Hrothgar like all great leaders comes with many flaws. He is very similar to current and past world leaders and brings a new meaning to the word great. Despite being thought about in a positive light he certainly has his warts. These include his heavy drinking habit, a lack of self control, and no desire whatsoever to be king of the Danes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The early cantos in the textual iteration of Beowulf describe Hrothgar of this great and generous king. A whole column is used to describe his generous deeds, such as harboring Beowulf s father in his darkest hour. There s one scene in particular in which the cantos depiction and the movie s depiction are incredibly different. It comes when Hrothgar throws a party the night before Beowulf s battle with Grendel. In the cantos Hrothgar seems to be in control and enjoying everyone s company, none more so than his lovely wife Wealtheow. However in the film Hrothgar seems to be forcing himself upon his wife, who doesn t seem to enjoy her marriage in the first place. During the films interpretation of the party Hrothgar seems to be ridiculously intoxicated, slurring his speech and stumbling all around Heorot. It is this drastic difference that makes a person realize that maybe Hrothgar is not as great as it seems, but that s not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He had a leg injury at a young age, which left him not being able to move for months (Biography) . His leg injury, on the other hand, did not get in the way of what he was dreaming of doing growing up. During the time of his leg injury, Hawthorne developed an interest in reading and writing. He grew up being an enthusiastic reader of poetry and exotic adventure stories. Hawthorne had to overcome a lot of obstacles growing up to become a writer. Despite losing a father and having a leg injury at such a young age, Hawthorne became a successful writer of the American Romantic period. Thanks to his uncles, Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College in Maine. His uncles paid for his college tuition there. He attended the college when he was 17 years old and spent 4 years there. At the college, he met and made friends with Franklin Piece and Henry Wadsworth (Biography) . While he was attending college, Hawthorne missed his family so much and returned home to Salem after graduation (Biography) . He stayed in Salem for 12 years. Will the heavens come down to earth or will humans go up to heaven? These are all points that Christians need to ask themselves and begin to think about. He lays these topics out in clear, concise ways so the reader can comprehend what his points are. All throughout his book, the theme of a new heaven and new earth are constantly being thrown around. Wright uses Philippians 3:20 that says, But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ to back up his claim that ... He puts it like this, In particular, this new body will be immortal. That is, it will have passed beyond death not just in the temporal sense but also the ontological sense of no longer being subject to sickness, injury, decay, and death itself (160) This means that we are going to have stronger, healthier, more perfect bodies that God will give us as a gift of love. We may not even look the same, something will be different about our bodies. In fact, when Jesus was resurrected from the dead the disciples did not recognize him. This was a man whom they had worked for years with and for, yet they did not recognize him in the new body. Wright claims that this immorality is different than the common idea of immorality. He says that people believe immorality has to do with souls, not bodies. After I read this, I immediately disagreed with that, because I have only thought of immorality of souls living forever, not bodies. After I had thought over this statement a bit more, I found myself agreeing with it. In fact, 2 Corinthians 5:4 says, While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life. I knew that verse, yet I still never made the connections in my head. While our earthly bodies do not go up to heaven, I believe our souls do until the Lord returns and then we will be raised with our new bodies. If we die before the Lord returns, then we will be with the Lord in heaven, yet not complete until he returns to the earth. One thing that Wright says that I do not agree with is, ...immortality is something that only God possesses by nature and that then he shares, as a gift of grace rather than an innate possession, with his people (161). Macon moved to New York City for college and began a crime spree of robbing white people who rode in his taxicab. The city of New York went on a search for the black man who was supposedly robbing these people. Eventually, Macon s true skin color is revealed and he decides to use his newfound fame to discuss the evils of white people. Macon then founded the Race Traitor Project. This idea was for guilty white people and liberals to be a part of what he called a Day of Apology, in which white people were to apologize for the hundreds of years of oppression they put minorities through. The Day of Apology ended up causing a major riot, which led Macon to decide how committed he was to the Race Traitor Project. Adam Mansbach used ABWB as a means to shed light on institutional racism and what can be done to end it. • 15. The Killer Angels By John M. Skipper Essay History 1301 John M. Skipper The Killer Angels is a historic backstory of the days leading up to the Civil War. The story is told from multiple viewpoints including Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, George Meade, and Winfield Scott Hancock. It is mentioned the Army of Northern Virginia is moving behind the Blue Ridge Mountains, and that the Army of Potomac is also moving, but is traveling very slow. This is one of the characteristics which plagued them throughout the war. Shaara gives insight to the background of both Armies. He described the Confederates as a unified group with soldiers of the same background, while the Union is the exact opposite. Its men are very divided soldiers fighting for unification. There is one similarity between the two sides which stands out more than all the others; both sides are ready for the final showdown. Shaara gives insight into this by hinting towards the conflict, yet never telling the reader directly. This causes the reader to be drawn deeper into the story anticipating what will happen next. There are illustrations showing movement of the Confederate and the Union armies, an epilogue, and an afterword stating the events after the Battle of Gettysburg. In the foreword, Sharra tells the reader the purpose of the book is to educate the reader on the history of the battle, but also give insight into the soldier s thoughts. There isn t enough time to ensure enough is done to establish due diligence defence, and as for the low expense ratio in comparison to the industry this would be the primary show stopper, in conjunction with the timing of dismissal of the other underwriter, and heightened liability exposure risk section 11 and 12 of the Securities Act 1933. Jonathan Parry revisits Mauss theory in his essay, The Gift, the Indian Gift and the Indian Gift , (1986) addressing its connection as well as contradiction to the Hindu law of gift giving. The obligation to reciprocate is based on the belief that the recipient receives and possesses something that belongs to the donor (Mauss 1925: 17). In reciprocating a gift, Mauss explains that the receiver balances and restores the hau of the first gift to its origin (Mauss 1925: 15 17). Moreover, the potlatch, the North American Indian practice of exchanging gifts competitively, is characterized by themes of rivalry and destruction, requiring one to reciprocate or risk losing authority (Mauss 1925: 11 12). In Northeast Siberia and among the Eskimos of West Alaska, the exchange of gifts is imbued with additional spiritual significance (Mauss 1925: 18 19). In destroying by sacrifice, as in the potlach, the people are fulfilling their obligations to the gods, to whom they owe their use of the land (Mauss 1925: 20 21). Marcel Mauss asserts this exchange of gifts between the humans and the gods is a necessary element of buying peace between them (Mauss 1925: 21). Mauss argues that reciprocation is a mandatory element of gift giving because of the social contract that is formed by the first gift, which contains in it the donor s spirit (Mauss 1925: 14 21). Claudius then goes on to trick Laertes into plotting against Hamlet, and Laertes proclaims, And so I have a noble father lost;/A sister driven into desperate terms/Whose worth. if praises may go back again,/Stood challenger on mount of all the age/For her perfections. • 27. Essay on Traditional vs Distance Education Education is an essential element in societies throughout the world. For many years education has been provided in classrooms on campuses worldwide, but there has been a change made to the conventional method of classroom learning. With the advancements in technology, education has been restructured so that it may be accessible to everyone through taking courses online. Distance learning takes place when the teacher and student are separated from one another due to their physical location and technology is used to communicate instructions to the student and to communicate feedback to the instructor. The virtual classroom is one of the various forms of technology used as an alternative to the traditional classroom settings. Other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Fox (1998), what is in dispute is not whether distance education is ideal, but whether it is good enough to merit a university degree, and whether it is better than receiving no education at all. He alludes to an argument that states students learn far too little when the teacher s personal presence is not available because the student has more to learn from the teacher than the texts. Thus, in order for the student to be taught well, does the teacher have to be personally present? Many advocates of distance education are ardent about their venue and very critical of traditional education. These online education devotees view traditional classes as being unchangeable, inflexible, teacher centered, and static (Fitzpatrick 2001). However, proponents argue that many simply would not be able to get a degree without distance education—the full time police officer, the mother of four, or the individual living in a rural area approximately 100 200 miles away from any educational institution. Many individuals desperately need distance education courses because they have jobs, families, civic responsibilities. They are thirsting. But some want us to say, Sorry you don t want to drink the water there, but we can t bottle our fresh spring water, so you ll have to come here or drink nothing (Fox, 1998, p. 5). Proponents contend that distance education is as good as traditional education. In other words, learning occurs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An Analysis Of Paul Robeson s The Power Of Negro Action TITLE goes here This paper shall proceed as follows; I will begin exploring first the essay by Paul Robeson and highlighting some of the most striking and interesting facets, followed by the chapter from Rhonda Williams where I will explore the connections to the chapter by Robeson, and lastly I will look at the essay from Andrea Friedman, where I will further note interesting facets of the reading as well as create ties to the aforementioned works. Paul Robeson s chapter The Power of Negro Action is rather straightforward from the outset. Robeson is presenting an empowering piece, which has several subsections relating to the central theme of collectivized action on the behalf of black people. One of the more interesting aspects of this chapter comes from the way in which Robeson calls for black people to use their agency to better their position. From the outset Robeson states, I say that Negro action can be decisive. I say that we ourselves have the power to end terror and to win for ourselves peace and security throughout the land (Robeson, 90). The interesting aspect of this quote is the fact that the paragraph proceeding it establishes the historical precedent of blacks not necessarily enacting the full degree of their agency. However, Robeson s call proclaiming the power of black agency contrasts this and shows a progression toward the growing sentiments of blacks having more power than dominant society would like to portray. Robeson exclaims that the power that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All of those images reflect some aspect of science, but none of them provides a full picture of what science completely is. Gender Stereotypes In The L Word The L Word in one of the rare examples of a television show that centers itself on characters that fall outside of the straight male hegemony; this is true from the introductory shots of the show. After doing a series of setting establishing shots of LA, the camera pans across a typical suburban street, and image that immediately invokes the idea of the typical mom and with with their kids, American nuclear family. The next scene introduces the first character, a muscular, straight, white, cis man in a white t shirt movie furniture within a room that one would expect to find in such a suburban scene. By allowing the viewer to see this character once again, it gives them a familiar face to identify with. As Mulvey suggests, most visual media is meant for white men to identify with, this type of character gives the short allusion that the television show is going to be this same type of experience: a show directed at straight white men. However, it quickly flips the script on this as the next scene, in which we receive the shows first dialogue, depicts one of the women from the bed, named Tina, standing in front of a mirror, looking at an ovulation test. Mulvey writes about what is called the mirror phase, The mirror phase occurs...with the result that his recognition of himself is joyous in the he imagines his mirror image to be a more complete, more perfect than he experiences his own body. Recognition is thus mislaid with mis recognition: the image recognized is conceived as the reflected body of self, but its mis recognition as superior projects (60). This quote describes a stage of identity in psychoanalysis in which a child first recognizes themselves in a mirror, and can therefore imagine themselves as more than a reflection of their mother s face even though the image is a misrepresentation in it s incompleteness (Mulvey 60). This concept is directly applicable to this scene, as the character standing in front of the mirror represents a stage of identification for the viewer. By seeing the character reflected in the mirror the viewer receives a more complete image of her, is forced into this step of self identification; thus, the audience directly cued that they are supposed to identify with this character, rather than the male character that was shown ... • 35. Antidepressants Should Be Treated Using Talk Therapy I feel trapped , I feel empty , I feel hopeless and numb , are all ways that people have described their depression. Usually this would be followed with going to the doctor and expressing how the person feels and then the doctor prescribing an antidepressant. The question that stands is does everyone on antidepressants actually need to be on antidepressants? Antidepressants should be reserved for the cases and people who really need them rather than someone who has situational depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or even seasonal affective disorder, all types of depression that can be treated using talk therapy rather than medication (Illiades, 7 Side Effects of Antidepressants). Every year Americans consume more anti depressants than any other nation in the world and from the years 1988 1994, the use of anti depressants increased by 400% (Ross). Statistically speaking, women have a 70% chance of developing depression over men and about 13% of the women who have children would develop postpartum depression (Holms). Self esteem is our confidence and satisfaction in our own skin. Low self esteem can cause someone to not like certain aspects our their body. We all have something we would like to change, but this is far more serious. It s to the point they feel as if they won t be happy or people won t think they re pretty/handsome enough or good enough. With low self esteem it can cause a person to have a large amount of rancor towards themselves. Low self esteem has been shown to be correlated with a number of negative outcomes, such as depression ( McLeod 1 ).Without self esteem or self confidence we will not feel comfortable in the body and flesh we were born with. • 37. The Function of Punishment Essay The Function of Punishment Justice must not only be done but seen to be done . Most would agree with this statement the wicked must surely be punished (or should they? do two wrongs make a right?) but why is it so important that the punishment must be seen to be done? To the utilitarian the answer is simple punishment must be witnessed in order to deter others from committing the same act. Thus, to a utilitarian the perception of punishment is seen as the main, or even the sole, justification for punishment. Of course, if the wrongdoer is sent to prison for any length of time he is incapacitated, and thus excluded from doing further harm. Further, while being punished there may be at least ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Taking that, by definition, punishment involves inflicting some kind of pain on the offender, the ideas of reform and incapacitation are largely seen as secondary to the main purpose of punishment to deter. The most well known proponents of utilitarianism have almost always justified punishment in terms of its deterrent effect. Bentham, for example, argued that apparent justice was everything, and real justice was essentially irrelevant. And John Stuart Mill, in defending the death penalty, stated that to deter by suffering by inflicting suffering is not only possible, but the very purpose of penal Justice. (Mill 1868). This leads to one of the main criticisms of the utilitarian argument, namely the denial that there is any moral justification for punishment other than preventing further suffering. This argument seems counter intuitive surely the wrongdoer must get his just deserts? What would justice mean if some wrongdoers were to go unpunished simply because no deterrent effect could be demonstrated? Conversely, and more seriously, there would certainly be occasions when innocent men would have to be punished for the sake of the greater good for example, in that case where an atrocious crime has been committed and the authorities failed to find the perpetrator ...
