Sympathetic Villain In Doctor Faustus
On the Differences between the Ultimate to the Sympathetic Villain
In John Milton s Paradise Lost Satan represents the ultimate villain, a genuine representation of the
dark side. For this reason, Milton s Satan is characterized with great decisiveness, lack of remorse
whatsoever, and bold disobedience against the all mighty God. For this reason Satan remains
throughout the poem in the evil side, without the ability to make even a temporary transfer from the
dark side to the opposite heavenly side; hence Satan stays confined in the evil realm. On the other
hand, in Christopher Marlowe s play The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus ,
Mephistopheles character represents a kind of villain that is somewhat easy to sympathize with.
Consequently, Marlowe s Mephistopheles is capable to represent the obvious side of evil and yet in
the same time to be an advocate in favor of repentance for Doctor Faustus. In Paradise Lost Milton
portrays Satan as the adversary to God. Although Milton does not portray God exactly as he is
described in the Bible, still he portrays God as the all mighty, the eternal, the creator of all creation,
and as the ultimate representation of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Faustus, his character presents certain flexibility. Accordingly his character sustains duplicity of a
fallen angel which belongs to the evil realm , while on the other hand he expresses his sincere regret
of the fact that he has been deprived the joys of heaven.
The key to seeing Faustus in this way is a particularly puzzling, initially ludicrous exchange between
Faustus and Mephistopheles. Mephistopheles gives his greatest speech, and Faustus gives one of his
bumptious and aesthetically unappreciative replies:
MEPHISTOPHELES : Why, this is hell, nor am I out of it. h ink st thou that I, who saw the face of
God
And tasted the eternal joys of heaven,
Am not tormented with ten thousand hells
In being deprived of everlasting

Hiroshima By John Hersey Analysis
There is no doubt that you cannot drive a car without looking in the rear view mirrors. In other words,
in order to build a hopeful future you need to learn from the past and your mistakes. I wholeheartedly
support the idea that learning about the past is vital for bettering ourselves for a fruitful future.
Learning from the past helps us understand the evolution of our lives and it keeps us rooted to where
we came from. Studying the past also gives us insight to prepare and grow for the future. John Hersey
says, the sense of fear...... memories of what happened at Hiroshima, is a part of why there hasn t been
another Atomic bomb drop since 1945. Having those haunting memories of the effects of the bomb
and the aftermath of Hiroshima reminds

The Benefits Of The Mozart Effect
The Mozart effect is a study which showed that listening to classical music such as Mozart s
stimulates the brain and can have a positive effect on social, cognitive, and physical skills ( 10
Benefits ). In 1993, Frances H. Rauscher had 36 college age students listen to either: Mozart s Sonata
for Two Pianos in D Major, a relaxation tape, or silence. He then tested their spatial task performance
(Smith). The results showed that students who listened to Mozart s music score increased by 8 9
points. The media had a field day with this and the news spread like wildfire. After the first study was
released, exaggerated claims that Mozart s music increased IQ spread throughout the news. Soon, it
became popularly understood that listening to Mozart would make you smarter (Smith).
Companies jumped at this opportunity and CDs of Mozart s music were marketed with the
scientifically proven ability to increase intellect. Governor Zell Miller of Georgia was so enthralled at
the results of the study that he passed legislation to allocate $105,000 to give a free classical music
tape or CD to every new mother in the state (Dowd, 1). Tennessee followed up by creating similar
legislation and daycare centers in Florida are now required to play classical music. A quick google
search will show millions of results filled with distorted views and opinions over this one study. Even
the original researchers were baffled by how their single study had expanded. Frances Rauscher,

The Significance of Chapter 5 in Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
The Significance of Chapter 5 in Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

This essay will consider the significance of Chapter five to the rest of the novel, and look at how Mary
Shelley s life has influenced her writing. I am going to focus mainly on Chapter five, but first I am
going to consider some important aspects of the preceding chapters.
In Chapter one Victor describes how his mother and father met and how he and Elizabeth where
brought together. When he first describes her, it contrasts greatly with his primary depiction of the

Though he had a happy childhood, Frankenstein never had many friends, and Elizabeth and Henry
Clerval where his closest. When Victor was seven, his mother had another baby, and the arrival of that
child made them decide to stay in Geneva.
The rest of the chapter however, is devoted to recounting his love of science
Curiosity, earnest research to learn the hidden laws of nature,
Gladness akin to rapture, as they were unfolded to me, are among
The earliest sensations I can remember (Chapter 2, pg 40).
Victor soon starts reading the writings of alchemists such as Cornelius Agrippa, a medieval scientist
whose teachings were exploded by Frankenstein s time. These readings were what would ultimately
lead to his downfall. Eventually, after discovering the science of electricity, he stops studying Agrippa,
and begins to study mathematics instead, but fate as he puts it, brought him back to the field of
science. Frankenstein, in the first two chapters, keeps referring to his imminent doom, and his fate,
which begins with the bringing to life of his creation in chapter 5.
At the age of seventeen Victor leaves his family in Geneva to finish his studies at Ingolstadt
University. Just before he departs, his mother catches scarlet fever from Elizabeth, who she had been
nursing back to health. This

Essay on The Ghost
Night in the country came like a cloak so that everything outside disappeared. No street lights and a
new moon, whose light couldn t penetrate the many trees, may have had something to do with that.
From any window, the only thing Nate saw when he looked outside was a thick blanket of black and
the occasional flare of a firefly. At nine p.m. he excused himself from his grandparents company as
they watched Secrets of the Dead in their sitting room. He had some dead people s secrets to uncover
himself. He went to the library and carried to his room the two boxes of books he and the twins had
started on earlier. He intended to look through them late into the night and make up for their lack of
progress. But soon his eyes were too droopy to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They landed on top of each other in a straight line about six feet in length. Shock and fear glued Nate
to the bed as the stacking continued until he had to look up to see the last rows. Some unseen force
now directed more books to leave their box and form a new line, connecting to the first row at a thirty
degree angle. The thumping noise softened as the stack rose higher into the air. Another pile of books
soon stretched over Nate s head. The new stack was only a fourth the length of the first row but just as
high. Eerily, Nate s bedroom door opened with the crack he had come to expect from the old
hardware. But never would he have imagined the line of books that floated through the door like they
were dangling from invisible strings. The set of encyclopedias he recognized from the library drifted
over to the first stack and began a third line, angled at thirty degree again so that it made an upside
down V with the other angled line. The new row also stopped at one fourth the length of the original
row. More books crowned the stack until it reached as high as the first two rows. Nate sat unmoving,
hardly breathing and hardly able to believe his eyes. But it seemed the last row of books put an end to
the construction. No more books floated through the door or from boxes. The room was quiet as Nate
eyed the partition of books piled two feet from him. He scooted across the bed to the opposite side and
cautiously tested the floor, afraid

The Hudson Plains ecozone is one of the bigger ecozones in Canada. Hudson Bay Arctic Lowlands
covers over 350 000 square kilometres. Its area curves around Hudson Bay and James Bay, from north

shows how it is not hard to see why this ecozone is so big.

Internal Rhyme Scheme Of The Raven
The established works of literature in society today, allow for readers to develop their own unique
sense of interpretations of the deeper meanings of these texts. The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, is a
piece that deals with the struggle of a loved one passing and the main character s internal and mental
struggle of dealing with this scenario. Whilst, sitting amongst his gloomy, dark chamber of the hours
of midnight the traumatized male is met by a dark raven, who of which is the responder to his
thoughts out loud of the attempt of forgetting about his love named Lenore. The raven, has only yet to
reply with a single phrase. This phrase is the statement of Nevermore , displayed through the raven s
choice of words ignites the thinking process in the reader s brain, as had myself been wondering what
this exactly could signify. The first source ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within the text of The Raven, the tone of the scheme followed a underlying pattern relating towards
mourning and sadness. The pattern was kept flowing throughout the entirety of the poem. Poe was
able to master, through the use of literary devices, the ability to add, emotion, depth and tone to this
piece. The internal rhyme scheme creates a sense of anticipation and tension, which plays into the
external rhyme schemes as well. Lines crafted together reflect my formerly made ideas relating
towards the criticism, an example shows as the line states Once upon a midnight dreary, while I
pondered weak and weary (Poe 1. This chosen quote plays into allowing the reader to become more
engaged with the words and helps them find a pattern. Poe s repetition of sound throughout his

Potential Lead Contamination From Drinking Water
Introduction
Course Overview
Potential lead contamination from drinking water presents a significant health risk. Recent examples
of this lead contamination include Flint, Michigan, a city that experienced a large increase in the
number of people, especially children, who exhibited symptoms of lead poisoning. A March 9, 2016
article in the Washington Post reported data from the Environmental Protection Agency that indicated
approximately 350 schools and day care centers across the US failed lead tests approximately 470
times between 2012 and 2015. Seven years ago, according to the Post, a study concluded that
hundreds of young children in Washington, DC, had potentially damaging amounts of lead in their
blood due to contamination in the city s tap water. The toxin can cause permanent developmental and
behavioral issues.
A February 8, 2016, NY Times article reported that five months after Sebring, Ohio officials found
unsafe lead levels, the City issued a warning for pregnant women and children and shut down taps and
fountains in schools.
In 2001, after Washington, D.C., changed how it disinfected drinking water, lead in tap water at
thousands of homes spiked as much as 20 times the federally approved level. Residents did not find
out for three years. When they did, officials ripped out lead water pipes feeding 17,600 homes and
discovered three years later that many of the repairs had only prolonged the contamination.

The Roots of Happiness
Early Modern Europe experienced several tragedies in which the citizens sensed that there must be a
better way to live where happiness was more familiar. Alterations for what truly defines absolute
happiness in a society during these times of catastrophe were expressed through utopian literature.
Thomas More s Utopia, Tomasso Campanella s City of the Sun, and Caron De Beaumarchais The
Marriage of Figaro together attempt to answer what truly creates a happy civilization during different
periods of crisis within Europe. Each of these utopian literature s suggest a different origin that
happiness derives from, soundly signifying that change in Europe would be beneficial. The
revolutionary ideas of change in Europe proposed by Utopia, City of ... Show more content on

Another interesting approach that Utopia takes to encourage happiness is to have no punishment by
death to those who steal. The belief was that without the punishment of death and instead forcing the
accused to manual labor, in return, there would be no thieves. Showing Utopias Erasmian influence,
this idea was derived directly from the Romans who also used manual labor for punishment of
thievery. Clearly then, this utopia was pushing for happiness that would not be focused on
materialistic goods. Instead, these utopians derived their happiness from moral pleasure, or any
enjoyment that was not destructive to the body or morals of themselves or others. For example, the
people of Utopia obtained gratification from philosophical debate between others. Happiness was very
important to this society for the reason that they believed that God had created man to be happy and
enjoy life. Furthermore, God had planted appetites in man for good and healthy things in order to
promote a happy life. Thus, citizens were also able to obtain moral pleasure from the natural act of
eating. However during this time Europeans were predominantly Catholic, believing in original sin
and the idea that suffering was necessary for redemption of the afterlife. But, Thomas More made this
radical statement contradictory for the reason that happiness was so acute in Europe

Advantages And Cons Of White Privilege, And African Americans
Caucasian Americans have many privileges that African Americans do not get to share with them.
This is known as white privilege, a problem that has haunted the United States for many years. White
privilege is a term used to describe the benefits and advantages that colored people do not have. It is
defined as a special right or something granted for certain people. Caucasians may not realize or want
to admit that they are more privileged just because their skin is white. Racial prejudice does not apply
strictly to Caucasian verses African American, it affects every race and culture all over the world like a
disease. A Caucasian person can have a white privilege without being prejudice. Privilege, no matter
the type, is something you are born with and prejudice is taught intentionally or unintentionally.
Prejudice opinions are preconceived and not based on factual evidence or experience. The most
obvious differences between privilege and prejudice are the advantages versus disadvantages based on
race, culture, and basic human rights.

It should be the ones you are entitled too. However, racial tendencies do play a part. People of color
tend to be more profiled in certain cases, receive stricter sentences on crimes, and have other
disadvantages. Human rights should not be based on skin color and or culture. Even though slavery
was outlawed many years ago, that persona is still present. The United Nations was established in
1994, after the Holocaust and WWII. It was conceived to control international peace and to respect
human rights. The United Nations incorporated the principle of respect for human rights into its

Essay about Jefferson vs. Hamilton on Views of Government
Whose side would you have been on in the 1790s, Thomas Jefferson s or Alexander Hamilton s? Both
of these men served under George Washington in the first presidential cabinet, yet they had very
different views of what government should be (Davis 86). My objective in this research essay is to
inform the reader of why there was so much controversy between these two founding fathers, and to
determine which side had the better views for our newly forming country. After Washington became
president, people started forming political parties based on how they thought the government should
be run. Washington did not like the idea of the country being divided into factions, as he called them.

Hamilton was a Federalist who believed in a strong, central government with a national bank. He also
wanted to make alliances with Britain (Davis 86). Of course, as history can tell us, Jefferson, an
Antifederalist, or a Republican as they called them back then, favored little federal government
control and more say for the small farmers and states (Davis 86 7). He believed that all Americans
should be educated enough to read and understand the issues that were being voted on so that they
could choose their own leaders and run for office themselves. In fact, he proposed a bill, which would
guarantee some public education for all children, excluding slaves. He felt that this would allow
people to have an opportunity to better themselves based on talent and virtue instead of wealth and
birth. Even though his bill was voted on three times, it didn t pass due to the fact that the majority of
the Virginia Assembly thought that it was too radical, too expensive, and too unnecessary (Davis 52
3). Antifederalists were also anti British, but friendly to France, their ally at the time (Davis 87). I

The Challenges of translating sense of humor from Arabic into English
Abstract
Humor is a social and stylistic phenomenon. The function of humor text is to achieve the entertaining
and amusing the readership. As a first step to translate humor, the translator should know what makes
this certain sentence or expression funny? What is the type of this humor? If the translator knows that,
he will decide what strategy should be used to give a better translation for that humor. This paper will
investigate both linguistic and cultural challenges of translating humor from Arabic into English ...

This paper, however, will concentrate on the first two groups, i.e., translating linguistic and cultural
humor only. Generally, there are many problems that surround translating humor from Arabic into
English since they belong to two different linguistic systems; however, there are some techniques and
strategies that can be used in order to convey the same message intended in the original culture.
Linguistic Problems
Linguistic humor or language based jokes can be classified as the most difficult type of humor to be
translated into the target language. Raphaelson (1998) states that the challenge of translating this kind
is not because of the nature of the humor or joke itself, but its relation to the language. on the same
line, El Yasin (1997) states that linguistic jokes...are based on some incongruity resulting from an
accedential feature in the design of the language...the build up of joke creates a context in which one
interpretation of a linguistic form is reasonable and another is suppressed (p.4). To support this
statement, let s see this example:
Source sentence: ‫طحنوه‬ ‫حب‬ ‫واحد‬ ‫في‬
Back translation: there is one fell in love, they ground him
Here, we are facing a linguistic problem. This translation would make no sense for the English
speakers. The word ‫حب‬ has two different meaning in Arabic: fell in love and a grain . The appropriate
sense of this sentence is to give the meaning of the first part as

Pharoah and Layfette Rivers grew up in the projects of Chicago, Illinois in what was known as the

but due to their environment, their circumstance did not allow them to live like the children they
dreamed of. The boys were raised in a decrepit building: no enclosed lobby, a dark tunnel through the
hall, busted first floor mailboxes, and very dim lighting that required them to carry flashlights. Their
mother, LaJoe described the neighborhood surrounding their building as a black hole due to
businesses gravitating towards the suburban appeal. The neighborhood had more to lack than offer

Pharoah was a very emotional and naive introvert. His best friend, Porkchop was his one and only
friend. This could possibly be due to the stutter that Pharoah had, although it did grasp the attention of
the elders around him. Pharoah differentiated himself from his older siblings by ignoring the harsh
realities around him. His daydreaming was to compensate for the strong emotional outbursts he felt.
He always could laugh at the smallest thing and created every scenario as if it were a full blown

But it is Pharaoh s delicate personality that created such a soft spot for him in Lafayette. Lafayette

However, this promise was severed during a gang shootout on the street where for a split second,
Lafayette lost Pharaoh. As the rivals shootout came to an end, the boys explicitly heard the police

American society is seen as a violent and arrogant group of people, whereas the Amish are seen to be

The director portrays this like an old western shoot out, because Book is walking away then holsters
his pistol in a shoot out type fashion. We see rapid mid range shots between Book and McPhee which
gives us the feeling of a fast paced action movie. This leaves Book wounded and in a state of shock.
Book then flees to the Amish hideout with Rachel and Samuel because it is no longer safe in Boston.
Book is cared for by the Amish by using traditional herbal teas and remedies. One morning, Book
awakes to find Samuel holding his gun and yells don t move with an outburst of anger. Book removes
the bullets and allows for Samuel to hold it. Rachel walks in and sees that Samuel is in possession of
the gun and sends him downstairs. Book now creates a personal conflict because he knows that he
should not have let Samuel get his hands on the gun because violence is against their beliefs, and
morally no children of any culture should be in contact with guns. Book also knows that he is the
protector and he needs to nurture Samuel but not expose him to the ways of the English .
As the plot progresses we see the growing love interest between Book and Rachel develop. In
particular where Book is trying to start the car in the barn and Rachel joins him. The car starts, the
radio fires up and the DJ announces What A Wonderful World to the excitement of Book. Book invites
Rachel to dance where they sing and have a great time until Eli walks in.

Kipling And Race
The author Rudyard Kipling in his book Kim mentions race almost everywhere possible. Race is
apparently one of the important things to the author. The author at the very beginning of the book
highlights the dark tanned skin of the people as he mentions and I quote burned black as any native .
He also stresses that he himself is white. One things the author masters in his book is mentioning the
race of each and every character in the book. Let s take a look at one of the passages of the book

She also points out that she is not fanatic about pure British decent people and goes on to criticize
them strongly by saying that they are worse than pestilence , which means plague. The reason for his
dislike is because these people come straight from Europe to work in the Indian bureaucracy, who just
have bookish knowledge about India and its languages, but lack the real knowledge about India and its
true culture and way of living.
Race therefore is quite important and this is not the only piece of writing that gives so much
importance to race. Orientalist Constructions of India, by Ronald Inden, also stresses upon race and
can be confirmed by the following passage from the book:
And in spite of successive waves of invasion and conquest by Persians, Greeks, Scythians,
Muhammadans, the national development of the life and literature of the Indo Aryan race remained
practically unchecked and unmodified from without down to the era of British occupation. No other
branch of the Indo European stock has experienced an isolated evolution like this. (Inden 426)
In conclusion, race, religion, background, language, sexuality, plays an extremely important role in the
story, if not the most important, and the author clearly emphasizes on it despite contradictory views in

The Leaders And Servant Leaders
Different types of leaders have different traits such as a narcissistic leader is egotistical; self absorbing
who basically is only concerned with their wants and needs. Covenant leaders are moral, ethical and
humbly put others before themselves. Then there are the servant leaders who believe they are there to
provide service to others. Anyone can be a leader, but it is in how they lead which determines the traits
they carry and use. Their purpose is to lead successfully so that others may follow in their footsteps.
Traits of a leader can be described as dimensions of individual differences in tendencies to show

Servant leaders are much like mentors and teachers they believe in building strong relationships and
bonds with those they work with or in their ways of thinking work for. Servant leaders find the best in
people and try to bring that out in them so they develop ways to grow their self and their skills/talents.
Servant leaders have a way of looking out for the needs of others, and do what they can to help and

Cognitive Therapy For PTSD
Treatment for any illness especially mental disorders can take some time to work. The case is still true
with PTSD. There are many different ways to treat PTSD and it is case by case which is best for each
individual. Therapy and medications have proved to be the most successful forms of treatment. In the
U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs article about the different forms of treatment, it talks about the few
different forms of therapy used(PTSD: National Center for PTSD). Cognitive therapy helps an
individual understand that how thoughts and stressors can make your symptoms worse. Therapists that

Important in A Child Day Care?
Educators even in a childcare centre must keep developmental records and child progress reports in
order to bring out the best in the children in their care daily. They need this documentation for a
number of reasons that range from evaluating the efficiency of the centre s teaching methods to
sharing detailed information with the parents about the progress of their children. A childcare centre
should make record keeping an integral part of its routine to ensure that all documentation is up to

We say tricky since not all children progress at the same rate and at times, some parents become upset
at the thought that their children are behind in development. A skilled educator will be able to allay the
fears of these parents through showing the proper documentation and guide them on how to help their
children through the difficulties they may have in the developmental process.
Evaluating Teaching Methods
When educators in a childcare centre can examine their written documentation on each child, they are
able to realize which methods and programs are a success and the ones that need improvement.
Through this, the centre can offer the best possible programs and teaching methods to fit their children
s needs and circumstances. Without proper record keeping, the centre would have no way to re
examine its actions.
Childcare Centres, Parents and Children Benefit From Documentation
When childcare centres make the appropriate entries into children s developmental records and
progress reports, all parties benefit from this effort. Childcare centres can continually improve their
operations. Parents receive accurate updates on their children s progress. Children receive the best

Marketing Mix And Telephone Operator O2
Introduction There is no single indicator of performance but a variety of different measures which
provide an insight into a telephone operator s economic, social, managerial and consumer
perspectives. These may relate to price, quality, user choice or efficiency. A good performance in one
service does not allow one to predict a favourable performance in other aspects and no operator can
claim to be perfect in all of these respects. In a highly competitive business environment like the
telecommunications industry, subscriber based service models are something of a mandate In markets
like these, business successes can be validated by a very low churn rates. _Churn rate is a wide term
and can be applied to a company s customer base, revenue, employee turnover etc._ This is ideally a
result of the deployment of successful business models and a logical application of the marketing mix

A Good Man Is Hard To Find By Flannery O Connor
Characters of A Good Man id Hard to Find A famous example of American literature is the short story
known as A Good Man Is Hard to Find . The story was written by Flannery O Connor in 1955.
Flannery O Connor was born Mary Flannery O Connor in 1925. She was considered an important
person in American literature, with credits for writing two novels, over 30 short stories and various
reviews and commentaries on other written works. O Connor was raised in the south in the Bible belt
and these traits show within her works. Her writing style is considered Southern Gothic and often
reflects her own views on ethics and morality. I think the author does a good job in her story by
keeping the reader interested with a few twists and a dark albeit realistic tone. O Connor does well at
keeping the story A Good Man is Hard to Find true to the genre. In this story O Connor writes of
several characters and each has their own role and purpose for being in the story and helping it move
along. The story centers on this one s family vacation trip to Florida that is cut short due to murder.
The main characters in the story are Baily, his grandmother, his wife and children and the Misfit. The
different character interactions between each other are what drives this story and explains to the reader
what the different characters are thinking or how they feel. The characters in the story are often at
odds with each other, much like the stereotypical family, where the family members

Pride and Vanity in Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Vanity in Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice
Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be
proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would
have others think of us. In her novel, Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen makes the point that an excess
of pride or vanity is indeed a failing.
Pride, observed Mary, . . . is a very common failing, I believe. By all that I have ever read, I am
convinced that it is very common indeed, that human nature is particularly prone to it, and that there
are very few of us who do not cherish a feeling of self complacency on the score of some quality or
another, real or imaginary. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mr. Collins possesses a definite sense of vanity. He is in no way concerned about his own opinion of
his character, for as we see his character leaves much to be desired. All he cares about is what others
think of him. He always needs the approval of his present company. When he gives Elizabeth the
grand tour of his nothing spectacular home, he is looking for her approval of his position and
possessions. It is not important to Mr. Collins for people to like him as a person, they just had better be
impressed his status in life and his connections.
Mr. Darcy, as one of the main characters, is for the better part of the novel a focus of the theme of
pride. His pride is very obvious. It is a part of his nature and is seen in his mannerisms and in his
speech. Darcy has such a high opinion of himself that he does not care what others think of him or his
prideful actions. He believes that he is the best in every way possible and finds that his standing in
society gives him the right to be critical of those not as perfect as he.
Elizabeth Bennet, the other main character of the novel, is just as guilty of being proud as any of the
other characters in the novel. She prides herself on being unprejudiced and rational in the judgement
of others. Yet, this is an imaginary quality as she learns that her preconceived notions of both Mr.

How Is Walt Disney Connected To The Future
For countless years Disney imagineers at The Walt Disney Company have exercised the concept of

incorporated into Disneyland and Disney World theme parks. Imagineers have used the original source

Essay On Symbolism Of Civilization In Lord Of The Flies
Anarchy fallen over the once peaceful land and all but one has returned to their savage ways. In
William Golding s, Lord Of The Flies, The character of Piggy is a symbol of civilization. To
commence, Piggy symbolises civilization because of his glasses as the fire is started by thm, and fire
is the first sign key to civilization . Secondly, by insisting the continuation of the rules to be enforced
on all of the island, Piggy demonstrates the ideals of civilization. Finally, Piggy idealises civilization
by wanting to advance in technology on the island. In William Golding s, Lord of The Flies, Piggy
symbolises civilization on the island, while others turn to primitive, savage ways. First and foremost,
Piggy s glasses are used to start a fire which shows a sign of civility as fire is the starting point to
civilization, with it being the way the boys will return home. During the first meeting, Ralph addresses
the group to say that a fire is needed to go in order to attract attention to the island for a passing boat.
The boys then, unsure how to start a fire, Ralph moved the lenses back and forth, this way and that, till
a glossy white image of the declining sun lay on a piece of rotten wood. Almost at once a thin trickle
of smoke rose up and made him cough (Golding 56). This shows that because of Piggy being hard of
sight, the boys were able to start a fire and have the ability to return to civilization. Furthermore, due
to Piggy s glasses creating the fire, the boys can now

Attract or Relocate
Tanglewood should focus on attracting employees that fit its niche market. Employees may better
serve customers by having local knowledge such as the best hiking routes, bike trails, camp sites; etc.
Generally, the retail industry doesn t require a highly specialized or task specific workforce and so the
company should be able to attract the talent it needs locally.
Overstaff or Understaff
Tanglewood should continue to overstaff. There is currently an abundance of department managers
and assistant mangers that may at times border on surplus. However, Tanglewood can benefit by
having a stockpile of talent by ensuring smooth succession in case of turnover, retirement or
promotion. Overstaffing also ensures that trained staff is available during peak seasonal periods to
ensure quality and the superior customer experience that consistent with the company s values.

Tanglewood has emphasized employee participation and teams since its inception and one of the most
important cultural elements of the organization is the commitment to straight talk in all areas of

should seek is to implement new policies and procedures that will centralize the human resources

Detailed Description Of The Raccoon
Detailed description of the Raccoon The raccoon is a native mammal, measuring about 3 feet long,
including its 12 inch, bushy, ringed tail. While most Raccoons weigh between 12 and 22 pounds,
raccoons can grow as large as 60 pounds as has been reported in some areas such as Washington,
Maine, and Minnesota. Additionally, their weights are dependent on their genetics, age, availability of
food, and habitat location. Furthermore, because their hind legs are longer than the front legs,
raccoons tend to have hunched appearance when they walk or run. According to nature magazine
raccoons are very tactile animals, the five toes on their front paws are extremely dexterous, essentially
functioning as five little fingers which allow it to grasp and then manipulate food and a variety of
other objects; hence, it is not surprising to see a raccoon picking up grapes and berries very much like
a human would. They are known for their exceptional hearing and night vision; the excellent hearing
and night vision are both very useful for locating small prey such as beetles, grasshoppers, and
crickets. According to the article titled, Life and habitat of Raccoon (n.d), Raccoons are also
outstanding climbers and are one of the very few animals that can descend a tree head first a feat
accomplished by turning their paws 180 degrees . They are reluctant to swim even though they can
swim. Worth noting is that raccoons are omnivorous, meaning they eat both plants and animals, they

The Empire Strikes Back

Best Leaders For Rome in the Play, Julius Ceasar
Unlike the common view of leaders, the potential leaders of Julius Caesar are not necessarily nice or
giving. However, sometimes that is necessary. In the play Julius Caesar, a long tale of leadership
shows the true qualities of the greatest leaders. Where the reader finds themselves started is at the
point which Antony and Caesar, the overconfident leader of Rome, are discussing people around them.
This discussion boils to a point in which Antony and Caesar discuss the possibility of Cassius being a
threat to Caesar. Later, readers find Cassius is indeed a threat, as he and multiple others, including
Brutus, stab Caesar to death. Antony then brings Caesar s body to the multitude, and with a great
speech inspires a hatred for those who wrongfully stabbed him. At the next point Antony is seen, he
and Octavius are the new rulers of Rome. These two comrades go and finally eliminate the last of the
traitors, Cassius and Brutus, in a battle that cements the two as the new leaders of Rome. Throughout
all these actions, one man particularly showed that he should control the Roman Empire. Antony was
created to be Rome s leader in Julius Caesar, where William Shakespeare gave him inspirational
abilities, persuasiveness, and fearlessness which are unparalleled. When Antony is heard speaking to
the crowd, it was rather clear that he could inspire large groups of people to take action with a startling
eloquence given to him. A person that can inspire will very often be a better leader

I Am A Cripple By Nancy Mairs
I AM a Cripple When my older sister, Molly, was ten years old, she was a temporary cripple. Molly

Mairs usage of the Handicapper General allusion ties to another allusion she uses to express more of
her feelings of being a cripple. The narrator uses Tiny Tim from the story A Christmas Carol by
Charles Dickens to portray her emotions about being a cripple when others thoughts and opinions are

her as sometimes she ends up feeling like Tiny Tim, peering over the edge of the table at the
Christmas goose, waving my crutch, piping down God s blessing on us all (Mairs). Tiny Tim is a
character in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, who is disabled. Even though he is a cripple, he is
still always happy and positive about life. The narrator uses him to achieve an obvious visual image of

frustration and she admits sometimes I don t want to play Tiny Tim. I d rather be a Caliban, a scurvy

Hysteria In Jane Eyre
Bertha Mason has become a significant literary character since Charlotte Brontë included her in Jane
Eyre in 1847. As discussed in chapter one, there was a social correlation between women and hysteria,
and a great fear by women of false committals or home imprisonment by their husbands. Jane Eyre is
a novel that plays upon that fear and brings these frightening scenarios to life. Brontë s depiction of
Bertha Mason also reveals society s views of hysteria. This is an illness that is difficult to understand,
and Jane s descriptions of the hysterical woman have a visceral feel to them. This chapter will argue
that Bertha Mason is a literary response to public debates concerning mental illness, specifically
hysteria in women. It will begin with an analysis of her character, from her description to her actions.
This analysis will show how Brontë used the knowledge available to society to exploit the fear of the
mistreatment of wives while using current treatment methods. This chapter aims to read Bertha Mason
not only as the hysterical woman but as a figurative illustration in the novel.
Charlotte Brontë includes the phenomenon of women s hysteria in her novel; inasmuch, she depicts
characters of different social ranks and how they view the one hysterical woman. Before Bertha
Mason introduces as a character to the reader, Jane Eyre describes the distinct laugh she hears while
accompanying Mrs Fairfax to the attics as it was a curious laugh; distinct, formal, mirthless and a

Gnosticism And Tertullian s Development Of Christian...
During a time where Gnostic ideology was one of the heresies gaining momentum, Tertullian and
Irenaeus were two of the individuals that brilliantly defended the faith. They saw Gnosticism through
the same lens as many other Church Fathers, as nothing else but a heresy. In their time this was a real
threat to the true faith that was laid out for them through the Scriptures and through the oral tradition
passed down by the apostles. Like many heresies, Gnosticism started off within a Christian
foundation. However, what makes it more interesting is that Gnosticism as philosophy or the ideology
as a whole may have predated Christianity since we see some epistles arguing against some of the
Gnostic principles (Kelly 23). To further refute the heresy, Irenaeus and Tertullian had a tremendous
contribution in the development of Christian apologetics. While similar, many have credited Irenaeus
to his ecclesiological development and Tertullian to his Christological development in the early
Church.
Through the writings of Irenaeus, we quickly learn of how he viewed the Scriptures and the apostles.
Irenaeus laid his argument by stating a foundation that every Christian would agree with, which was
that Christ himself is the ultimate source of Christian doctrine. While this may seem very intuitive, it
is because of this foundation that Irenaeus lays out that he is able to further develop his argument.
Irenaeus continues with this argument by stating that Christ has revealed his message

Influential Kings in British History
There are many influential kings in British history, one being Henry VII. Founder of the Tudor
dynasty, he was a somewhat shadowy figure; cold, cautious, rigid man who paid constant attention to
the administration and the filling of the royal funds. Henry was an accomplished politician who
restored peace and stability to England. He was more of a dry, spiritless count that enjoyed the chase
and other athletic activities but also music, dancing, and cards. With the death of Prince Edward, and
the murder shortly afterwards of his father Henry VI, the fourteen year old Henry Tudor became the
leading Lancastrian claimant to the throne. This wouldn t have been so bad if Edward IV s brother, the
Duke of Gloucester, declared his sons illegitimate and took the throne for himself as Richard III. The
disappearance and presumed murder of the young princes turned many of Richard s subjects against
him and rallied around exiled Henry Tudor. Henry was now the leading claimant to the throne as
Richard was now an illegal leader. Henry reinforced his promised marriage to Elizabeth of York,
daughter of Edward IV. This brought Houses of Lancaster and York, which brought dissident Yorkists
to Henry s side. ( Crofton, 2006) After the death of the last two Yorkists claimants, Henry s position on
the throne was much more secured. He had isolated Warbeck from foreign allies by securing peace
with France, the emperor, and Scotland. He married his daughter Margaret to the Scotland king, James
VI.

Perceptions Of Literacy Policies And Procedures
The quantative study examined teachers perceptions of literacy policies and procedures, and if
professional developments were made available and beneficial to teachers. The methodology used was
survey research. The authors kept an unbiased tone throughout the article, and used methods such as
sampling, a focus group, measurement and scaling, and statistical analysis. Based on the information
provided in the article, I concluded this is an objectivism epistemology.
They stated that their measurement instrument was reliable, since the test retest (T1 T2) correlated the
coefficient of stability was 0.92. This is an excellent correlation produced by the pilot group of 100 K
6 teachers who completed the survey. I must note according to the authors there was a 4 mo. span
between T1 and T2, this short amount of time between the tests could explain the exceptional results.
The study itself contained around 400 participants and they used the same survey for both the pilot
group and study participants.
There was no hypothesis, and I m not sure if I would call this a literature review, I would have gone
more in depth with the multiple annotations used. At least providing some results from previous
studies. They provided a sufficient amount of statements. Thus, the authors do provide adequate
background knowledge of policies and information regarding the 21st century literacy initiative, and
the support required to insure teachers have the tools and knowledge necessary to effectively

Within-Class Ability Grouping Essay
Within Class Ability Grouping
As a future educator ability grouping is more than likely going to be a part of my classroom. I think it
can and will be a valuable tool in effectively teaching all students of varying abilities. Ability grouping
is a greatly debated area in the field of education. Opponents to the practice believe ability grouping is
detrimental to learning and student self esteem, but ability grouping, specifically within class ability
grouping, can be very effective in teaching children. The students are able to learn at a pace that is
suitable to their individual abilities and teachers are able to construct lessons that are specifically
geared towards each level. Within class ability grouping necessitates flexibility ... Show more content

This involves assigning students within the classroom to small groups based on ability with each
group working on their own material according to their ability level. Within class grouping appears to
be a useful means to facilitate student learning (Lou, 451). The positive effects are slightly greater for
low achieving students than for average or high achievers (Hollifield). A child may have lower
abilities in one subject, but be more proficient in another; the child should be placed accordingly. For
example, an elementary child may be placed in a low ability group for reading and a high ability group
for mathematics, but for social studies, spelling, and science be with the entire class. This enables the
child to get needed help in the weaker area and extra stimulation in the stronger area while allowing
the child to interact with all of his peers in other subject areas. Many elementary schools use within
class grouping and it has been effective.
W. R. Borg, educational researcher and author, examined the consequences of grouping systems by
comparing two adjacent school systems, one using homogeneous (children of the same ability) groups,
the other using heterogeneous (children of varying ability) grouping. Borg s research concluded that
elementary level ability grouping provided the slower and average pupils with a better chance for
social recognition than did random grouping

Pubius Cornelius Tacitus Essay
Pubius Cornelius Tacitus (55 118AD), was a historian from an equestrian family born in either norther
Italy or Southern Gaul who wrote Biography of Agricola in 98 AD followed by Histories in 105 AD.
The first document, an excerpt from Biography of Agricola 29 32 is a fictional speech from the British
war chief named Calgacus who was preparing his people for battle against Gnaes Julius Agricola the
governor of the Roman provinces in Briton from 78 85 AD and also Tacitus father in law. The second
document is an excerpt from Tacitus Histories 4.74 which is also a fictional speech. This speech given
through the view point of Petillius Cerialis a Roman general who stopped the revolt of the people of
Gaul in 70AD. In my essay I am going to assess whether or not Tacitus motives throughout the
speeches are to shed negative light on Roman conquest and Roman rule of its conquered territories. ...

I admit that I cannot give an accurate assessment of what Tacitus true motives where. Having only
read the excepts from both documents, I do not know what content he wrote leading up to the
speeches, nor do I know what came after them which could give me more insight into why he wrote
what he did. What I can use though is the information that I do know, such as his biases and the shared
style of writing between the documents to formulate my own opinion. For the excerpt from Biography
of Agricola I know that the fact that Agricola was Tacitus father in law is a definite bias towards how
and why he wrote that document. As for the excerpt from Histories could the fact that he may be from
southern Gaul have influenced him to write the speech? For both speeches though Tacitus main bias is
that he is a wealthy Roman male whom was raised in a different world than the people that are

Monogamy Vs Polygamy
Relationships are complicated, especially romantic ones; they involve a wide range of emotions and
expectations that need to be met or the relationship will fail. When it comes to polygamy there are
even more variables added to the equation since there are additional partners involved in the
relationship. Unlike the common belief that polygamy is where a man has multiple wives, it is actually
much more in depth where both sexes can have other romantic partners. As long as one lets their
partner know who they are seeing the relationship is considered healthy, although there is still the
obvious possibility of jealousy occurring. Honesty is everything in polygamy, even though individuals
are allowed to be romantically involved with others, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the United States it is illegal to be in an any of the three forms of polygamy if one is married. In the
early days Mormons were even persecuted if they were found practicing polygamy. If individuals
want to be polyamorous they must do so without being lawfully wedded to their partners. In a society
that is constantly progressing towards giving people their rights, polygamist still struggle in being
viewed as a legitimate way of life. With the gay rights movement having so much momentum and
finally becoming legal in the United States, polygamist thought the outcome could soon be the same
for them. The one major argument against polygamy is that it is a choice unlike the predetermination
of one s sexual orientation. Critics suggest that individuals should just be single instead of engaging in
a relationship where they are not faithful to one person. Although it is not certain where the future of
polygamy is headed, the controversial lifestyle is growing in popularity as more people explore their
sexual and emotional identities.
There is no doubt that as time goes on new generations develop different attitudes than their parents
which in turn shapes the modern world we live in. As far as marriages go, people are no longer in such
rush to get married, have children, and start the typical family associated with adulthood. This in part
could be because of high divorce rates that many individuals have experienced either with their
parents or someone they know. Cathy Meyer

Living in a Fallen Societies
Would you like to live in a world where your leader is murdering millions of people, well this was
Nazi Germany. Thankfully we don t have to live through that anymore. Why? Because faults in the
society lead to its failure. All societies fail, but why? Corrupt leaders, lack of resources, and failure in
security can all lead to the downfall of a society. Now not all societies fail for these reasons, but Nazi
Germany, ancient India, Rome, and the Glade, a fiction society in The Maze Runner book by James
Dashner, have. The are usually many faults in our government and every government whatever type of
government it is. Leaders are very important in a society because everyone looks up to the leader, but
what happens when the leader is corrupted? Bad things happen when a leader is corrupted, It
happened in Germany and in The Maze Runner. In the Glade they have a council of Keepers who run
the government. The Keepers are like the CEO of one of the many jobs at the Glade. The Keepers
make the laws and vote on issues. Gally is one of the Keepers on the council. Gally is a bully. He
threatened to kill Tomas more than once and has hurt other citizens in the Glade. Gally also does not
respect their government system. He wants to be the only leader. All of the leaders need to be on the
same page, so everything can work right. In this case it wasn t, which is why the Glade fell.
During the Nazi Germany era, Hitler started out nice but abused his political power and became a

  • 2. Sympathetic Villain In Doctor Faustus On the Differences between the Ultimate to the Sympathetic Villain In John Milton s Paradise Lost Satan represents the ultimate villain, a genuine representation of the dark side. For this reason, Milton s Satan is characterized with great decisiveness, lack of remorse whatsoever, and bold disobedience against the all mighty God. For this reason Satan remains throughout the poem in the evil side, without the ability to make even a temporary transfer from the dark side to the opposite heavenly side; hence Satan stays confined in the evil realm. On the other hand, in Christopher Marlowe s play The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus , Mephistopheles character represents a kind of villain that is somewhat easy to sympathize with. Consequently, Marlowe s Mephistopheles is capable to represent the obvious side of evil and yet in the same time to be an advocate in favor of repentance for Doctor Faustus. In Paradise Lost Milton portrays Satan as the adversary to God. Although Milton does not portray God exactly as he is described in the Bible, still he portrays God as the all mighty, the eternal, the creator of all creation, and as the ultimate representation of ... Mephistopheles gives his greatest speech, and Faustus gives one of his bumptious and aesthetically unappreciative replies: MEPHISTOPHELES : Why, this is hell, nor am I out of it. h ink st thou that I, who saw the face of God And tasted the eternal joys of heaven, Am not tormented with ten thousand hells In being deprived of everlasting ... The Benefits Of The Mozart Effect The Mozart effect is a study which showed that listening to classical music such as Mozart s stimulates the brain and can have a positive effect on social, cognitive, and physical skills ( 10 Benefits ). In 1993, Frances H. Rauscher had 36 college age students listen to either: Mozart s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, a relaxation tape, or silence. He then tested their spatial task performance (Smith). The results showed that students who listened to Mozart s music score increased by 8 9 points. The media had a field day with this and the news spread like wildfire. After the first study was released, exaggerated claims that Mozart s music increased IQ spread throughout the news. Soon, it became popularly understood that listening to Mozart would make you smarter (Smith). Companies jumped at this opportunity and CDs of Mozart s music were marketed with the scientifically proven ability to increase intellect. Governor Zell Miller of Georgia was so enthralled at the results of the study that he passed legislation to allocate $105,000 to give a free classical music tape or CD to every new mother in the state (Dowd, 1). Tennessee followed up by creating similar legislation and daycare centers in Florida are now required to play classical music. A quick google search will show millions of results filled with distorted views and opinions over this one study. Even the original researchers were baffled by how their single study had expanded. I am going to focus mainly on Chapter five, but first I am going to consider some important aspects of the preceding chapters. In Chapter one Victor describes how his mother and father met and how he and Elizabeth where brought together. Victor soon starts reading the writings of alchemists such as Cornelius Agrippa, a medieval scientist whose teachings were exploded by Frankenstein s time. These readings were what would ultimately lead to his downfall. Eventually, after discovering the science of electricity, he stops studying Agrippa, and begins to study mathematics instead, but fate as he puts it, brought him back to the field of science. Frankenstein, in the first two chapters, keeps referring to his imminent doom, and his fate, which begins with the bringing to life of his creation in chapter 5. At the age of seventeen Victor leaves his family in Geneva to finish his studies at Ingolstadt University. Just before he departs, his mother catches scarlet fever from Elizabeth, who she had been nursing back to health. This

No street lights and a new moon, whose light couldn t penetrate the many trees, may have had something to do with that. From any window, the only thing Nate saw when he looked outside was a thick blanket of black and the occasional flare of a firefly. At nine p.m. he excused himself from his grandparents company as they watched Secrets of the Dead in their sitting room. He had some dead people s secrets to uncover himself. Some unseen force now directed more books to leave their box and form a new line, connecting to the first row at a thirty degree angle. The thumping noise softened as the stack rose higher into the air. Another pile of books soon stretched over Nate s head. The new stack was only a fourth the length of the first row but just as high. Eerily, Nate s bedroom door opened with the crack he had come to expect from the old hardware. But never would he have imagined the line of books that floated through the door like they were dangling from invisible strings. The set of encyclopedias he recognized from the library drifted over to the first stack and began a third line, angled at thirty degree again so that it made an upside down V with the other angled line. The new row also stopped at one fourth the length of the original row. More books crowned the stack until it reached as high as the first two rows. Nate sat unmoving, hardly breathing and hardly able to believe his eyes. But it seemed the last row of books put an end to the construction. No more books floated through the door or from boxes. The room was quiet as Nate eyed the partition of books piled two feet from him. He scooted across the bed to the opposite side and cautiously tested the floor, afraid ... Recent examples of this lead contamination include Flint, Michigan, a city that experienced a large increase in the number of people, especially children, who exhibited symptoms of lead poisoning. A March 9, 2016 article in the Washington Post reported data from the Environmental Protection Agency that indicated approximately 350 schools and day care centers across the US failed lead tests approximately 470 times between 2012 and 2015. Seven years ago, according to the Post, a study concluded that hundreds of young children in Washington, DC, had potentially damaging amounts of lead in their blood due to contamination in the city s tap water. The toxin can cause permanent developmental and behavioral issues. A February 8, 2016, NY Times article reported that five months after Sebring, Ohio officials found unsafe lead levels, the City issued a warning for pregnant women and children and shut down taps and fountains in schools. In 2001, after Washington, D.C., changed how it disinfected drinking water, lead in tap water at thousands of homes spiked as much as 20 times the federally approved level. Residents did not find out for three years. When they did, officials ripped out lead water pipes feeding 17,600 homes and discovered three years later that many of the repairs had only prolonged the contamination. Another interesting approach that Utopia takes to encourage happiness is to have no punishment by death to those who steal. The belief was that without the punishment of death and instead forcing the accused to manual labor, in return, there would be no thieves. Showing Utopias Erasmian influence, this idea was derived directly from the Romans who also used manual labor for punishment of thievery. Clearly then, this utopia was pushing for happiness that would not be focused on materialistic goods. Instead, these utopians derived their happiness from moral pleasure, or any enjoyment that was not destructive to the body or morals of themselves or others. For example, the people of Utopia obtained gratification from philosophical debate between others. Happiness was very important to this society for the reason that they believed that God had created man to be happy and enjoy life. Furthermore, God had planted appetites in man for good and healthy things in order to promote a happy life. Thus, citizens were also able to obtain moral pleasure from the natural act of eating. Marketing Mix And Telephone Operator O2 Introduction There is no single indicator of performance but a variety of different measures which provide an insight into a telephone operator s economic, social, managerial and consumer perspectives. These may relate to price, quality, user choice or efficiency. A good performance in one service does not allow one to predict a favourable performance in other aspects and no operator can claim to be perfect in all of these respects. In a highly competitive business environment like the telecommunications industry, subscriber based service models are something of a mandate In markets like these, business successes can be validated by a very low churn rates. _Churn rate is a wide term and can be applied to a company s customer base, revenue, employee turnover etc._ This is ideally a result of the deployment of successful business models and a logical application of the marketing mix and telephone operator O2, in the recent years, have been repeatedly getting the combination right. The story was written by Flannery O Connor in 1955. Flannery O Connor was born Mary Flannery O Connor in 1925. She was considered an important person in American literature, with credits for writing two novels, over 30 short stories and various reviews and commentaries on other written works. O Connor was raised in the south in the Bible belt and these traits show within her works. Her writing style is considered Southern Gothic and often reflects her own views on ethics and morality. I think the author does a good job in her story by keeping the reader interested with a few twists and a dark albeit realistic tone. O Connor does well at keeping the story A Good Man is Hard to Find true to the genre. In this story O Connor writes of several characters and each has their own role and purpose for being in the story and helping it move along. The story centers on this one s family vacation trip to Florida that is cut short due to murder. The main characters in the story are Baily, his grandmother, his wife and children and the Misfit. The different character interactions between each other are what drives this story and explains to the reader what the different characters are thinking or how they feel. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us. In her novel, Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen makes the point that an excess of pride or vanity is indeed a failing. Pride, observed Mary, . . . is a very common failing, I believe. It is not important to Mr. Collins for people to like him as a person, they just had better be impressed his status in life and his connections. Secondly, by insisting the continuation of the rules to be enforced on all of the island, Piggy demonstrates the ideals of civilization. Finally, Piggy idealises civilization by wanting to advance in technology on the island. The boys then, unsure how to start a fire, Ralph moved the lenses back and forth, this way and that, till a glossy white image of the declining sun lay on a piece of rotten wood. Almost at once a thin trickle of smoke rose up and made him cough (Golding 56). While most Raccoons weigh between 12 and 22 pounds, raccoons can grow as large as 60 pounds as has been reported in some areas such as Washington, Maine, and Minnesota. Additionally, their weights are dependent on their genetics, age, availability of food, and habitat location. Furthermore, because their hind legs are longer than the front legs, raccoons tend to have hunched appearance when they walk or run. According to nature magazine raccoons are very tactile animals, the five toes on their front paws are extremely dexterous, essentially functioning as five little fingers which allow it to grasp and then manipulate food and a variety of other objects; hence, it is not surprising to see a raccoon picking up grapes and berries very much like a human would. They are known for their exceptional hearing and night vision; the excellent hearing and night vision are both very useful for locating small prey such as beetles, grasshoppers, and crickets. However, sometimes that is necessary. In the play Julius Caesar, a long tale of leadership shows the true qualities of the greatest leaders. Where the reader finds themselves started is at the point which Antony and Caesar, the overconfident leader of Rome, are discussing people around them. This discussion boils to a point in which Antony and Caesar discuss the possibility of Cassius being a threat to Caesar. Later, readers find Cassius is indeed a threat, as he and multiple others, including Brutus, stab Caesar to death. Antony then brings Caesar s body to the multitude, and with a great speech inspires a hatred for those who wrongfully stabbed him. At the next point Antony is seen, he and Octavius are the new rulers of Rome. These two comrades go and finally eliminate the last of the traitors, Cassius and Brutus, in a battle that cements the two as the new leaders of Rome. Throughout all these actions, one man particularly showed that he should control the Roman Empire. Antony was created to be Rome s leader in Julius Caesar, where William Shakespeare gave him inspirational abilities, persuasiveness, and fearlessness which are unparalleled. As discussed in chapter one, there was a social correlation between women and hysteria, and a great fear by women of false committals or home imprisonment by their husbands. Jane Eyre is a novel that plays upon that fear and brings these frightening scenarios to life. Brontë s depiction of Bertha Mason also reveals society s views of hysteria. This is an illness that is difficult to understand, and Jane s descriptions of the hysterical woman have a visceral feel to them. This chapter will argue that Bertha Mason is a literary response to public debates concerning mental illness, specifically hysteria in women. It will begin with an analysis of her character, from her description to her actions. This analysis will show how Brontë used the knowledge available to society to exploit the fear of the mistreatment of wives while using current treatment methods. This chapter aims to read Bertha Mason not only as the hysterical woman but as a figurative illustration in the novel. Charlotte Brontë includes the phenomenon of women s hysteria in her novel; inasmuch, she depicts characters of different social ranks and how they view the one hysterical woman. • 44. Gnosticism And Tertullian s Development Of Christian... During a time where Gnostic ideology was one of the heresies gaining momentum, Tertullian and Irenaeus were two of the individuals that brilliantly defended the faith. They saw Gnosticism through the same lens as many other Church Fathers, as nothing else but a heresy. In their time this was a real threat to the true faith that was laid out for them through the Scriptures and through the oral tradition passed down by the apostles. Like many heresies, Gnosticism started off within a Christian foundation. However, what makes it more interesting is that Gnosticism as philosophy or the ideology as a whole may have predated Christianity since we see some epistles arguing against some of the Gnostic principles (Kelly 23). To further refute the heresy, Irenaeus and Tertullian had a tremendous contribution in the development of Christian apologetics. While similar, many have credited Irenaeus to his ecclesiological development and Tertullian to his Christological development in the early Church. Through the writings of Irenaeus, we quickly learn of how he viewed the Scriptures and the apostles. Irenaeus laid his argument by stating a foundation that every Christian would agree with, which was that Christ himself is the ultimate source of Christian doctrine. While this may seem very intuitive, it is because of this foundation that Irenaeus lays out that he is able to further develop his argument. • 45. Influential Kings in British History There are many influential kings in British history, one being Henry VII. Founder of the Tudor dynasty, he was a somewhat shadowy figure; cold, cautious, rigid man who paid constant attention to the administration and the filling of the royal funds. Henry was an accomplished politician who restored peace and stability to England. He was more of a dry, spiritless count that enjoyed the chase and other athletic activities but also music, dancing, and cards. With the death of Prince Edward, and the murder shortly afterwards of his father Henry VI, the fourteen year old Henry Tudor became the leading Lancastrian claimant to the throne. This wouldn t have been so bad if Edward IV s brother, the Duke of Gloucester, declared his sons illegitimate and took the throne for himself as Richard III. The disappearance and presumed murder of the young princes turned many of Richard s subjects against him and rallied around exiled Henry Tudor. Henry was now the leading claimant to the throne as Richard was now an illegal leader. Henry reinforced his promised marriage to Elizabeth of York, daughter of Edward IV. This brought Houses of Lancaster and York, which brought dissident Yorkists to Henry s side. ( Crofton, 2006) After the death of the last two Yorkists claimants, Henry s position on the throne was much more secured. He had isolated Warbeck from foreign allies by securing peace with France, the emperor, and Scotland. He married his daughter Margaret to the Scotland king, James VI. ... Perceptions Of Literacy Policies And Procedures The quantative study examined teachers perceptions of literacy policies and procedures, and if professional developments were made available and beneficial to teachers. The methodology used was survey research. The authors kept an unbiased tone throughout the article, and used methods such as sampling, a focus group, measurement and scaling, and statistical analysis. Based on the information provided in the article, I concluded this is an objectivism epistemology. They stated that their measurement instrument was reliable, since the test retest (T1 T2) correlated the coefficient of stability was 0.92. This is an excellent correlation produced by the pilot group of 100 K 6 teachers who completed the survey. I must note according to the authors there was a 4 mo. span between T1 and T2, this short amount of time between the tests could explain the exceptional results. The study itself contained around 400 participants and they used the same survey for both the pilot group and study participants. There was no hypothesis, and I m not sure if I would call this a literature review, I would have gone more in depth with the multiple annotations used. At least providing some results from previous studies. They provided a sufficient amount of statements. Thus, the authors do provide adequate background knowledge of policies and information regarding the 21st century literacy initiative, and the support required to insure teachers have the tools and knowledge necessary to effectively ... • 47. Within-Class Ability Grouping Essay Within Class Ability Grouping As a future educator ability grouping is more than likely going to be a part of my classroom. I think it can and will be a valuable tool in effectively teaching all students of varying abilities. Ability grouping is a greatly debated area in the field of education. Opponents to the practice believe ability grouping is detrimental to learning and student self esteem, but ability grouping, specifically within class ability grouping, can be very effective in teaching children. The students are able to learn at a pace that is suitable to their individual abilities and teachers are able to construct lessons that are specifically geared towards each level. Within class ability grouping necessitates flexibility ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This involves assigning students within the classroom to small groups based on ability with each group working on their own material according to their ability level. Within class grouping appears to be a useful means to facilitate student learning (Lou, 451). The positive effects are slightly greater for low achieving students than for average or high achievers (Hollifield). A child may have lower abilities in one subject, but be more proficient in another; the child should be placed accordingly. For example, an elementary child may be placed in a low ability group for reading and a high ability group for mathematics, but for social studies, spelling, and science be with the entire class. This enables the child to get needed help in the weaker area and extra stimulation in the stronger area while allowing the child to interact with all of his peers in other subject areas. Many elementary schools use within class grouping and it has been effective. W. R. Borg, educational researcher and author, examined the consequences of grouping systems by comparing two adjacent school systems, one using homogeneous (children of the same ability) groups, the other using heterogeneous (children of varying ability) grouping. Borg s research concluded that elementary level ability grouping provided the slower and average pupils with a better chance for social recognition than did random grouping ... • 48. Pubius Cornelius Tacitus Essay Pubius Cornelius Tacitus (55 118AD), was a historian from an equestrian family born in either norther Italy or Southern Gaul who wrote Biography of Agricola in 98 AD followed by Histories in 105 AD. The first document, an excerpt from Biography of Agricola 29 32 is a fictional speech from the British war chief named Calgacus who was preparing his people for battle against Gnaes Julius Agricola the governor of the Roman provinces in Briton from 78 85 AD and also Tacitus father in law. The second document is an excerpt from Tacitus Histories 4.74 which is also a fictional speech. This speech given through the view point of Petillius Cerialis a Roman general who stopped the revolt of the people of Gaul in 70AD. In my essay I am going to assess whether or not Tacitus motives throughout the speeches are to shed negative light on Roman conquest and Roman rule of its conquered territories. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I admit that I cannot give an accurate assessment of what Tacitus true motives where. Having only read the excepts from both documents, I do not know what content he wrote leading up to the speeches, nor do I know what came after them which could give me more insight into why he wrote what he did. What I can use though is the information that I do know, such as his biases and the shared style of writing between the documents to formulate my own opinion. For the excerpt from Biography of Agricola I know that the fact that Agricola was Tacitus father in law is a definite bias towards how and why he wrote that document. As for the excerpt from Histories could the fact that he may be from southern Gaul have influenced him to write the speech? For both speeches though Tacitus main bias is that he is a wealthy Roman male whom was raised in a different world than the people that are influencing his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Monogamy Vs Polygamy Relationships are complicated, especially romantic ones; they involve a wide range of emotions and expectations that need to be met or the relationship will fail. When it comes to polygamy there are even more variables added to the equation since there are additional partners involved in the relationship. Unlike the common belief that polygamy is where a man has multiple wives, it is actually much more in depth where both sexes can have other romantic partners. As long as one lets their partner know who they are seeing the relationship is considered healthy, although there is still the obvious possibility of jealousy occurring. Honesty is everything in polygamy, even though individuals are allowed to be romantically involved with others, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the United States it is illegal to be in an any of the three forms of polygamy if one is married. In the early days Mormons were even persecuted if they were found practicing polygamy. If individuals want to be polyamorous they must do so without being lawfully wedded to their partners. In a society that is constantly progressing towards giving people their rights, polygamist still struggle in being viewed as a legitimate way of life. With the gay rights movement having so much momentum and finally becoming legal in the United States, polygamist thought the outcome could soon be the same for them. The one major argument against polygamy is that it is a choice unlike the predetermination of one s sexual orientation. Critics suggest that individuals should just be single instead of engaging in a relationship where they are not faithful to one person. Although it is not certain where the future of polygamy is headed, the controversial lifestyle is growing in popularity as more people explore their sexual and emotional identities. There is no doubt that as time goes on new generations develop different attitudes than their parents which in turn shapes the modern world we live in. As far as marriages go, people are no longer in such rush to get married, have children, and start the typical family associated with adulthood. This in part could be because of high divorce rates that many individuals have experienced either with their parents or someone they know. Cathy Meyer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
