Cathy Song The Youngest Daughter
Clarissa Reyna Mrs. M. Segovia English IV AP March 12, 2016 A Deeper Meaning The works of
poetry are often underappreciated and overlooked. The stories of plenty are being neglected in the
education of our youth. The work of Cathy Song, per say, personally has never come up prior to the
assigning of this paper. In Song s The Youngest Daughter , we are introduced to a variety of meanings
in which an analysis full of depth is required to clearly interpret and understand what it is that the
speaker is attempting to bring across through the use of clever diction. The poem in itself also contains
a compilation of carefully puzzle together literary techniques that are taught to be broken down to
provide a good understanding of a work of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When analyzing literature, it is very important to take it one puzzle piece at a time. Deconstructing a
work of literature can be difficult if the path isn t taken correctly and the work isn t completely broken
down for understanding. In Cathy Song s poem, the audience is able to understand the situation the
speaker is in due to the vivid images that Song provides. The imagery in the poem can be identified as
metaphorical (figure of speech in which a phrase is applied to something not literally applicable and
order to suggest a resemblance). The reader can also analyze the setting through the metonymy (the
use of the name of one thing for that of another thing) portrayed. Last but not least, the poem can be
deconstructed with the use of the symbolism (the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities) that
can be found when the poem is taken apart piece by piece. Now that we have a better understanding of
what it is that is going to be analyzed, let s begin to take a look at the poem through the eyes of a
deconstructionist. Cathy Song s The Youngest Daughter is clearly about a codependent relationship
between a mother and daughter, the mother s youngest daughter, to be specific. The poem is displayed
in the view of first person, for the daughter is the speaker. The poem is focused

Sigmund Freud And The Human Psyche
Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who studied in various subjects such as philosophy and
physiology (Freud 1992). Freud was the founder of psychoanalysis with his methods still being used
in the field of psychology, which highlights the pathological processes in mental life. The most
important aspect of Freud s ideas was the human psyche (personality) has more that has more than one
aspect. Freud (1923) separated the psyche into 3 sections known as the Id, Ego and superego whereby
they develop during different stages of our lives. Accordingly to Freud s model, the id is the
instinctual and primitive part of the mind that contains sexual and aggressive drives which contains
hidden memories (Sletvold 2013 pg.1022). Sletvold (2013) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Garcia (1995) describes that it is through psychosexual activity where a human being establishes
important interpersonal connections and an infant is contended with libidinal tensions (sexual drives
of life components). Oral is the first stage of Freud s psychosexual theory which of 0 1 year of the
infant and engages in how the mouth is the pleasure centre for development. Freud believed that
children were born with a sucking reflex and therefore desired their mother s breast which gives
psychological benefits as the child is being nourished on nutrients. This then indicates how Freud s
theory influences health and social needs during the first stages of child development. Moreover, it is
suggested that Natalie s mother may not have breast fed her child as Garcia (1995) further explains a
child may develop negative habits if the oral needs are not met during infancy and could affect the
next stages of a child s development. The second stage anal develops during 1 3 years of age where
children learn thee control their bodily functions manifested in toilet training. Garcia (1995) discusses
that improper resolution at this stage whereby the parents are toilet training their child too early, may
possibly result in a child who is uptight and overly obsessed with order; meaning that if unpathetic and
frustrated parents/guardians deal with the infant harshly, exposure, shame and negative feelings of
invasion maybe become associated with a natural body function.

Essay about Howard Stern
How might one explain Howard Stern? Yes, he is a refreshing change from the typical, politically
correct figure, and he provides humor and sex for late night audiences who are growing weary of Leno
and Letterman. And while Howard Stern, shock jock turned television host, is more on the same
wavelength as a Jerry Springer than a late night comic, Stern has always claimed like Jerry that his
show is just an act.
The idea that Howard Stern could come close but not too close to naked women on his television
show, might have created the impression that this was just an act after all. He would say things that
any other husband could not get away with, and it was okay, because it ... Show more content on

Although he has achieved remarkable success for an unremarkable act, he is obviously not happy in
his personal life. What Stern continues to do is to integrate his radio persona with real life and in some
ways, he cannot separate the two. What most people know about Stern s one big mistake had nothing
to do with a lesbian bimbo getting too close, but rather his talking about Alison s miscarriage on the
air. That is what most know about Howard Stern. His life has been aired in the film Private Parts and
he tells the world how he feels every day. While he is flamboyant, and pushes the envelope, one thing
is true. Howard Stern is at least consistent. What does this mean? While Stern on one hand objectifies
women on the show, and then talks about his wife lovingly, that is a contradiction. But he maintains
that this act is just that and both parts of that personality co exist.
Many wonder why the show is still on the air as it is somewhat offensive and really does nothing new,
even as the years go by. Ratings had in fact dropped for this successful host, but they soon picked up
again. Donovan reported that while Stern s Saturday night show had been in the doldrums, the marital
breakup had helped ratings (Donovan 226). But one question remains. What will Stern do now that he
is on available again?
That is not an easy one to answer.

The Sociocultural and Political Influence of Hamas in...
The Islamic Resistance Movement, also known as al Harakah al Muqawama al Islamiya (Hamas), has
proven to be an extremely agile and capable terrorist organization in Palestine. They benefit from a
deep rooted sociocultural infrastructure, highly lethal tactics and a complex hierarchy of leadership, all
of which have allowed the organization to prosper for over two decades. As where 90% of terrorist
groups wither and rapidly falter, Hamas has been able to quickly adapt to the constantly changing
political and social environment of Palestine . This evolution, has always assured the organization a
generous group of adherents. The necessity to change based on environmental stressors has likened it
to a multipronged organism, which has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both of these approaches would pave the way for Hamas seemingly bipolar tenure in Palestine. By the
1970 s, the Palestinian population was disillusioned by secularism, Westernization and materialism,
and many looked toward the Muslim Brotherhood and the Islamic revival as an alternative . A drastic
turn of events led to niche in Palestine that a more violent facet of the Muslim Brotherhood was
willing to fill. Since the 1950 s, the Muslim Brotherhood complemented the spiritual services
provided in mosques with social and welfare services, delivered through a network of clinics, schools,
charities, drug treatment centers, and even sports clubs . However, since 1988, with the onset of the
fist intifada, Hamas has followed an oscillatory pattern of violence and social charitable work. During
the first and second intifada, Hamas inspired the greater Palestinian public to support violent means to
incite change in the region. Conversely, during the Oslo peace process, when the majority of
Palestinians did not condone the level of violence that was seen during the first intifada, Hamas
dedicated more time towards their social roots, ultimately increasing their grassroots support. During
these lulls in violence with Israel, Hamas successfully institutionalized Islamism in the West Bank and
Gaza Strip. According to Sarah Roy, by 2000, 10 to 40 percent of all social institutions in the West
Bank and Gaza were Islamic . Arguably, these expanded new areas of Islamic social

PROBLEM #1 A. The simulated function given in the Excel spreadsheet Hamptonshire Express:
Problem_#1 allows the user to find the optimal quantity of newspapers to be stocked at the newly
formed Hamptonshire Express Daily Newspaper. Anna Sheen estimated the daily demand of
newspapers to be on a normal standard distribution; stating that daily demand will have a mean of 500
newspapers per day with a standard deviation of 100 newspapers per day. Using the function provided,
the optimal stocking quantity, which maximizes expected profit, is determined to be approximately

To find the optimal profit level, you would set $10 = to the marginal benefit, or: $10= ((0.8 *50) /
(2h)) and solve for H which = 4 hours. C. Using a table to compare the difference between problem #1
and problem #2, respectively, we can see the obvious differences between the optimal stocking
quantity and daily expected profit figures.
| Stocking Quantity | Daily Expected Profit | 1 | 584 | 331.44 | 2 | 685 | 371.33 |
The stocking quantity and expected profits are higher in the second scenario because of the extra time
spent to improve the quality of profile section. By spending the extra time to improve the profile
section, Anna Sheen increased the overall quality of her newspaper, which will, most likely, lead to an
increased probability of demand for her newspaper around the area. This increased demand will raise
Anna Sheen s stocking quantity and the daily expected profits that are associated with that individual
stocking quantity.
Problem #3 A. Assuming the number of hours Anna Sheen will spend developing the profile section
will = 4; Ralph Armentrout s optimal stocking quantity is 516, as portrayed in the table below:
Stocking Quantity | Daily Expected Profit | 513 | 62.131 | 514 | 62.139 | 515 | 62.143 | 516 | 62.145 |
517 | 62.144 | 518 | 62.140 | 519 | 62.133 | 520 | 62.124 |

Are People Truly Good At Heart
Are people truly good at heart or are people just born horrible. Anne Frank thought that people were
and I agree with her one hundred percent. You can t just judge people by what they portray since the
Germans were forcing people into their army, therefore the soldiers might have not wanted to harm the
Jews. After reading Anne Frank s diary, watching the movie, reading the play, and researching the
Holocaust I agree with Anne Frank s statement. The reasons that I agree are that the Holocaust won t
last forever, the soldier showed kindness to Otto Frank when they were packing up their belongings,
and lastly that the world is experiencing a phase. In conclusion, people really are good at heart. The

soldier gave even a little kindness when he had the chance. He didn t have to stop the other soldiers
from destroying the house since the people weren t going to be living there anymore. The second
reason is where it said that they had five minutes to get their things together. The soldiers didn t have

Finding out a Bit about Sweden
Sweden
Since I am interested in Sweden, I decided to find out a little about. One of the first thing I would find
out is some basic information about the country. Another thing I would like to find out is what has
happen in Sweden s history. Furthermore, it would also be interesting to learn about the country s
current leader. Information about the capital city is another thing that I want to discover about
Sweden. In addition, I would like to find out about popular attractions that are located in Sweden.
Finally, I want to learn about a famous person who was born in Sweden. Those are some of the thing I
hope to learn from doing this project. The first thing I wanted to find out was some basic information
about Sweden found out that armed neutrality has kept Sweden out of a war nearly for two centuries.
Low unemployment a low birthrate and one of the world s highest life expectancies has changed today
s Sweden. So there for Sweden would be a very good place to live, there are not many people running
around. There are jobs there for people. Sweden success has been good with capitalism like
cooperation between the government and labor unions that are 90% of the workers. In the late 1980s,
there were flood immigrants from Asia, Africa and Latin American. The second thing I wanted to learn
was what has happened in Sweden s history I discovered that the earliest historical mention of Sweden
is found in Tacitus. In the 11th century Olaf Skottkonung had became the first king to

A Brief Note On Cad And Cam Packages
Task 1
The manufacturing process over the last decade has been transformed, by the several modern CAD
and CAM packages offered to companies. Modernising their technologies that are used in their
facilities/site. Due to this traditional methods by the use of manual machines and drawing methods are
being replaced by the more efficient CNC machines programmed by CAM packages. Therefore, the
dated drawing methods of pen and paper on a drawing board are by revolutionised by the new
computer aided design software, which creates drawing to a more detail aspect for the customers. This
is pushed forward technology in this industry forward and to the modern age, company and their
customers are more satisfied with the information and design views in place when designed their
products.
CAD/CAM is a computer based manufacturing and design software, used massively in engineering
and also in other fields of manufacture. CAD/CAM can produce drawings in higher quality detail as
well as producing machine programmes for CNC machines.(Inc, 2016)
CAD meaning computer aided design, produces high quality 2d and 3d drawings and designs produce
by manufacturing companies. CAD offers companies the ability to draw their products (normally
drawn in 2d on a drawing board in traditional methods) in a fully constructed 3d design, which the
company is able to see their products in 3d and know how they will look like, when created in or
made. However they will benefit from CAD by being able to see problems

Betacyanin Essay
Effects of temperature manipulation and solution treatment on the Beta vulgaris craca plant cell
membrane and the change of the concentration of betacyanin when placed under these various stresses
Introduction:
The Beta vulgaris craca plant, commonly referred to as the beet root contains a pigment, red in colour,
called betacyanin. The betacyanin s containment within the cells of the beet root cell relies on the
stability of the plant s membrane structure. The manipulation of the cell s membranes through
temperature change and solution treatments often causes damage to the vacuoles within the cell which
contain betacyanin. Poovaiah and Leopold released a similar scientific publication in 1976 which
analyzed the effects of inorganic salts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Performing this experiment provides evidence and example of how various stresses effect this
membrane and to what extent will they remain intact.
Materials and Methods:
To obtain the standard curve for betacyanin, a spectrophotometer was used to measure the absorbance
level of the various concentrations of betacyanin within the water solvent. The beet root was cut up
into tiny 5mm uniformed disks to allow for the maximum leakage per test tube.
In order to observe the effects of the various temperature manipulations, the test was performed six
times at various temperatures. For this test the beets were placed into separate non permeable plastic
bags and were then completely submerged in several water baths set at the temperatures of 25ºC, 5ºC,
25ºC, 45ºC, 65ºC and 85ºC for 2 minutes each. Once the plastic bags were removed from the baths,
the beet discs themselves were removed and then placed into different test tubes of water with the
temperatures set at room temperature for fifteen minutes. The test tubes underwent vigorous spinning
by a vortex machine every five minutes to allow for maximum leakage results per beet disk
manipulation. Once the beets sat in the water for fifteen minutes, 2mL of the surrounding solvent was
poured into a cuvette to be measured with the spectrophotometer.
To observe to level of betacyanin leaked from the cells membrane through further analysis, a solvent
stress test was performed on

Essay about analysis of Edmund Spenser s sonnet 67
Edmund Spenser Sonnet 67 Edmund Spenser s Sonnet 67 is one of 85 sonnets from Amoretti which
was written about his courtship of Elizabeth Boyle. Spenser and Boyle were married in 1594. Sonnet
67 uses a hunting themed metaphor common in 16th century England comparing the woman to a deer
and the man to a huntsman in pursuit. Sonnet 67 appears to have been inspired by an earlier work by
Petrarch, Rima 190, but with a different ending. In this paper we will take an in depth look at this
work, also commonly referred to as Lyke as a Huntsman . First we will take a look at a literal
interpretation of Sonnet 67. This piece begins with a huntsman in pursuit. His stalked prey, a deer, has
gotten away from him. He is tired and sick of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The gentle deare returnd the selfe same way, (Spenser ll. 7) shows that the woman comes back
towards the man. Spenser uses the word deare instead of deer to allude to the metaphor of the deer
actually being a woman that he cares for very much. However, she did not return to him specifically
but just happened upon him in her search for someone or something else, Thinking to quench her
thirst at the next brooke (Spenser ll. 8). Now we will look at the second half of Sonnet 67, also in a
metaphorical sense. The woman sees that the man is no longer chasing after her There she beholding
me with mylder looke, (Spenser ll. 9) and suddenly decides he might not be such a bad suitor after all
Sought not to fly, but fearelesse still did bide: (Spencer ll.10). Spenser turns this piece around from the
original Petrarch piece here. He shows that it is the woman that is in control as opposed to the man.
He reaches out to her nervously because she has been running from him all this time and now she
seems to be encouraging and wanting his affections. He appears hopeful that his sentiments will be
well received by the woman and at the same time fearful of rejection. But she allows him to court her
now and encourages him to love her instead of playing hard to get and running off again Till I in hand
her yet halfe trembling tooke, / And with her owne goodwill hir fyrmely tyde (Spenser ll. 11 and 12).
The man then thinks that it seems very odd to see the woman who

Black Music and the Civil Rights Movement Essay
On July 5, 1954, forty nine days after the Supreme Court handed down the decision on the Brown vs.
Board of Education case, a nineteen year old truck driver recorded an Arthur Crudup blues track called
That s All Right Mama (Bertrand 46). Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips found the cut and played
it on his radio show a few weeks later. He received calls all over from people, mostly white, who
wanted to hear more. He quickly located the musician and brought him into the studio for an

In the Puritan world white represented good and black represented evil, including Africans and their
culture. After the War Baldwin states that the former puritanical views of whites will be challenged.
Musicians such as Elvis Presley were the first to issue this challenge to white society. Early rockers
such as Elvis would pave the way for social commentary in music that would add much fire to the
Civil Rights Movement. In order to fully understand the explosion in popularity of black music in the
years following World War II, one must understand the social conditions in which blacks and whites
lived in the American South. An article entitled Not Just the Same Old Show on my Radio delves into
the very issues behind racism. The article names aspects necessary for social segregation to exist: 1.)
There must be a stigmatism of the oppressed group. 2.) There must be some sort of labeled interaction
between groups. 3.) There must be a hierarchy of discrimination. (Kloosterman, Quispel 152) In the
case of the American South we see evidence of the Baldwin s Puritan dicta in each of theses points.
Obviously the stigmatism of the African race gathers its logic from the belief of African inferiority.
However, of importance at this time will be the second criterion referring to labeled interaction
between races. The labeled interaction that these authors are referring to of course represents the South

The Pros And Cons Of Ethanoline
Gas is an invaluable commodity in today s society. It is used in everything from cars, to lawnmowers,
to generators, to boats. Everyone uses it, but what exactly goes into it besides oil? One of the answers
to this is ethanol. Ethanol has been going into gasoline since the 1920 s and was widely used during
WWII (Gustafson, 2010). Ethanol gasoline became popular in the 1970 s due to the climbing prices of
gasoline (Gustafson, 2010). The high price of gasoline was a result of oil shortages because of
production cuts by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. (The Washington Times,
2006). The reason a rise in prices and a shortage of oil led to adding ethanol to gasoline was because
ethanol was an easily and cheaply created (Gustafson, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of Dulce Et Decorum Est
Horrors of the Trenches Wilfred Owen s Dulce et Decorum Est is a poem made of four stanzas in an a,
b, a, b rhyme scheme. There is hardly any rhythm to the entire poem, although Owen makes it sound
like it is in iambic pentameter in some lines. Every stanza has a different amount of lines, ranging
from two to twelve. To convey the poem s purpose, Owen uses an unconventional poem style and
horrid, graphic images of the frontlines to convey the unbearable circumstances that many young
soldiers went through in World War I. Not only did these men have to partake in such painful duties,
but these duties contrasted with the view of the war made by the populace of the mainland country.
Many of these people are pro war and would never see the battlefield themselves. Owen s use of word
choice, imagery, metaphors, exaggeration, and the contrast between the young, war deteriorated
soldiers and populace s favorable view of war creates Owen s own unfavorable view of the war to
readers. The title and final lines of the poem is Latin for It is sweet and honorable. At first glance, the
title may seem to be supportive of the war, however it is the ultimate irony of the story. The title uses
the words sweet and honor to open the reader to ideas of these feelings. The first stanza portrays the
bleakness of the battlefield for these young soldiers. The first two lines describe the soldiers as old
beggars and hags because of the horrendous situation they were put in. Many of the soldiers

The Effects Of Social Media On Society Essay
Social media has become prominent parts of life for many young people today. Most people engage
with social media without stopping to think what the effects are on our lives, whether positive or
negative. Are we as a society becoming more concerned with Facebook friends than we are with the
people we interact with face to face in our daily lives? What will the longterm effects of today s social
media use be? There are many positive aspects, but there are equally as many dangers that come with
the use of sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google +, Tumblr, Instagram, gaming
sites, and blogs. Social media has both negative and positive effects on society, it is up to the user to
decide what impact they want to make. In order to make the right choices, we must dig in and research
this topic thoroughly. Recent research has documented how technology, and social networking sites
(SNS; e.g., Facebook, Instagram) in particular, have given rise to a growing obsession with impression
management and self presentation online. Whether it s searching for the perfect Instagram photo filter
or carefully crafting a humblebrag Facebook status about a recent publication, users frequently engage
in selective self presentation strategies to portray an ideal self through social media (Chou Edge, 2012;

Tao Te Ching Analysis
Tao Te Ching: A Self Help Book for Americans There is no question that America is one of the most
self centered countries in the world, and because of this, we tend to avoid situations and issues that
have no immediate impact on us. Desensitization on this large of a scale can be dangerous, and it is
imperative that we begin to relearn traits such as kindness and compassion. The Tao Te Ching, while
not very familiar to the average westerner, is filled with numerous verses that speak directly about the
negative aspects of American culture and how we should be behaving. While the news spouts horror
stories daily about the terrible events in the world, remembering the teachings of the Tao can help to
alter our actions in the future. Some of the most monumental lessons from the Tao are those that seek
to correct greed, grow trust, and enforce peace, and from them we can learn how to improve western
culture with compassion and respect. Verse 3 of the Tao begins with a very simple statement, but it is
one that many Americans would have trouble following: Don t glorify heroes (3). Our entire
entertainment system is based on celebrities and elevating people for their accomplishments, no matter
how trivial they may be. Hollywood likes to take small events, or people, and blow them up larger

networking is an important aspect to get ahead in life. Many people I ve met have emphasized that in
order to be successful, one must network. I m glad to know that Matthews took the risk of knocking
on many top politicians doors in order to seek job opportunities, and I m also glad that he took a
lesson in starting from a smaller position than just sprinting to the top. A lot of people are desperate
for a reward, but what they don t realize is that it takes years to get to that destination. I m satisfied
with the majority of the content in this chapter; however, I would never waste my time trying to win
the support of another politician in order for me to sympathize with a preoccupation I do not care for

Observation In A Classroom
I observed that Saint Cloud High School s facilities were flawless, and the green areas were well kept,
it has modern and innovative technology that provide students with permanent opportunities for skill
preparation. I also detected that the security is, for instance, well intentioned to keep the students safe.
Surveillance cameras are installed throughout the building and the surrounding areas of the school.
The Mrs. Sanabria classroom was very organized and safe too. She used technology and classroom
physical resources cleverly because the way she fixed the classroom chairs that seemed appropriate
for her planned learning activities. One of the main advantages I noticed of having such chairs setting
is that she was able to address more often all her students. Consequently, the amount of interaction
between her and the learners was evenly distributed. From my point of view, the instructional setting
of this class was warm, open and tolerant. The overall setting of the classroom was pleasant and
productive. There were a good rapport and friendly balance between instructor and learners
interchange. Students participation was dynamic and enthusiastic. The pupils also seemed well
ordered, so the classroom rules must have been well founded. No discrimination or unfairness
prevailed at all. The students seemed to get along and respect one another. Mrs. Sanabria attitude
always looked confident, and she is continually looking at herself reflectively to assess situations and

Hamlet, Play and the Movie Essay examples
Hamlet is a tragic play, written by William Shakespeare between 1599 and 1602, but as years have
gone by, there have been made many movies produced in order to visually illustrate how the events of
the play occurred. This allows the film director s interpretation of Hamlet to have an effect on the
audience s understanding of the play, because they understand the play the same way as the director.
One of the most significant act and scene in the whole play is Act I Scene V. The film work of Hamlet
orchestrated by the director really focuses on being exactly as the written play by William
Shakespeare. The written work of Hamlet and the movie directed by Franco Zeffirelli have many
similar scenes. Act I Scene V is one of the most important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In movie version of Hamlet there is a lot of emphasis put into the feelings Hamlet has towards his
mother. During the movie, there is lot of physical presence shown on screen when Hamlet and his
Gertrude begin to argue. The interpretation of Franco Zeffirelli propose that further plot development
due to the fact that Hamlet s character is being given more internal conflict to overcome, which also
connects to the hypothesis that Gibson s Hamlet is stronger, both physically and mentally, in
comparison to the original Hamlet.
Also, Gibson s Hamlet being stronger shows the impact of the setting on the story of Hamlet, because
everyone cast appears either healthier or stronger than one would imagine them from Shakespeare s
original Hamlet. Plus, in the original play there are references made about the heavy headed revel that
causes other nations to clepe us drunkards and with swinish phrase (Hamlet I.iv.21 23). Shakespeare s
Hamlet is becoming enraged thinking about his Uncle tarnishing the reputation of his nation with his
excessive drinking and partying. However, Gibson s Hamlet shows an efficiently operating town with
broken barriers between social classes and small gardens and farms. In the original Hamlet not a lot of
information is given about the general public, but what is known is that Hamlet does not mix with
paupers except for the traveling theater group. The two pictures of Hamlet s world are very different

the people of the United States safe from a tyrannical government. This is not only inferred from but
proved by the words, being necessary to the security of a free State . On December 14th of 2012, in

nearest firearm dealer and purchase the sorts of weapons being banned before the legislation is

of such weapons. Some people decided to give away these banned firearms, and could possibly give
that weapon to a criminal through private purchasing, making the amount of private sales increase

Multinational Corporations Vs. Small And Medium...
The fundamental goal of every company is to maximise profit to make money. That is the main reason
people create businesses whether it be the large corporations or the small and medium enterprises
(SMEs). Because of gloablisation, firms are competing in a highly competitive market where there is
increasing pressure to find ways to perform better to get that above average returns. However, there is
one thing other than economies of scale that greatly disadvantage the SMEs from the large
multinational corporations (MNCs) and that is profit shifting. First of all, MNCs are organisations that
operate in more than one country. Profit shifting is when MNCs utilise the differences in tax laws to
shift income to low tax affiliates and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a journal article by Bartelsman and Beetsma (2000), they looked at the presence of profit shifting in
response to the disparity of the corporate tax rates among several OECD countries. They used sectoral
data as a method for their analysis. They have found that the magniture of profit shifting is sufficiently
great and worthy of attention. They estimate that a one percent unilateral increase in tax rate will result
in a three percent decline in corporate tax revenues, where the organisation s profit is unchanged.
Moreover, the researchers found that having stricter enforcement in an already high tax jurisdiction
will have a negative impact on their tax revenues and that real activity is transferred to countries with
lower tax rates or more lenient enforcement.
As mentioned previously, increasing pressures of competition and the goal of making more profits are
the reasons why organisations try to find ways to minimise their costs. However, profit shifting is
done because they saw the substantial disparity of corporate tax rates among countries and thus, an
opportunity to minimise costs (Bartelsman Beetsma, 2000; Holtzblatt et al., 2015). Exhibit 1 shows
the corporate tax rates in developed countries (see Appendix). Australia s corporate tax rate is 30%,
which is the 4th highest (tied with Mexico) among OECD countries, where it is topped by the US at
35%, France at 34.43%, and Belgium at 33%. Holtzblatt et

How Harriet Did Not Have Such A Hard Time Living With...
Harriet did not expect to have such a hard time living with White students. She assumed that since she
attended a school in a White neighborhood and interacted with White people in high school, that the
experience would be the same at Cornell. What she did not take into account were the cultural
differences that emerge when living in the same environment. The experience for her was unpleasant:
I don t remember how I wound up in Mary Donlon [residence hall], but that was a horrible experience
my freshman year. That was the first time I d lived with White people, lived with White women,
young women, and it was just an awful experience. Culturally we are so different... not that I disliked
any of my White classmates or White people or White professors. I didn t really relate to them very
much. In fact, I don t even remember most of them at this point.
Jocelyn did not want to live on West campus because she heard that mostly White students lived there
and that there was a lot of drinking, however, she still ended up living and working as an RA in a
predominantly White dorm on North campus. Jocelyn had difficulty explaining her college
experiences. Some of the difficulty seems to stem from not wanting to focus on the negative
experiences. She believes that her experiences, both good and bad shaped her life and made her the
person she is today. Jocelyn almost seems more fascinated with the behavior of White students than
upset. She acknowledges some of the traditions

The Protestant Reformation s Influence On The Religious World
It was a chilly morning on the 31st of October, 1517 in the German town of Wittenberg. A priest walks
with papers in hand to the church and, stepping up to the wooden door, nails the papers to the front of
the church, posted for the town to see. Martin Luther, not knowing what he had just started, walked
away from the church beginning what has come to be known as the Protestant Reformation. This
Reformation is often viewed as a religious movement that eventually came to affect the political and
social spheres as well; Martin Luther along with other Protestants had started a revolution. It is clear
to see that the Reformation affected the religious world, is very much a critique and ultimately a
formal break with the Roman Catholic Church. Distrust and disgust with the Church had been ... Show

The Protestant Reformation had a profound impact on the history of Europe and eventually the world.
The influence of Wycliffe, Luther and Calvin truly led to and care on the Reformation and shaped the
beliefs of the next few generations of Christians. The same writings and ideas about religious faith did
not just stay there, it eventually cause political upheaval and started a chain reaction of the questioning
of authority. While the beliefs of the Reformers obviously influenced the religious and political world
society was not left alone. Particularly marriage, being tied with religious faith, was viewed differently
among Protestants, Luther advocated the equality of worth and status within the marriage relationship

ripple effect is still seen today. The modern world has been influenced so heavily whether religiously,

Cinematography In Citizen Kane
When watching Citizen Kane, the audience nearly doesn t need dialogue to enhance or intertitles to
explain the events that unfold. The excellent cinematography alone tells the story to the viewer. The
audience s awareness of the plot is due to the techniques behind the screen, the lens used, the
composition, every technical and artistic decision made (Cowan 90). Modern films might be driven by
words and accented by fancy color technology, but in this film, we the audience are able to derive
emotions and the inner psychology of characters through lighting, spatial narration, and the ever
famous technique of deep focus.
As with any non color film, the right lighting is absolutely crucial. We might wonder if it would have
been half as effective in color as it was in black and white, as the stark differences of the chiaroscuro
lighting add a tremendous amount to the characterization of Charles Foster Kane. For example, while
Kane is youthful and relatively wholesome (compared to an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This film is considered a pioneer of this technique (Hinrichs 60), although not the first time it d been
utilized. For example, it had been used on the titular character of the film Nosferatu to give him a
sense of foreboding (Cook 101). Gregg Toland, the director of photography on Citizen Kane, had also
used the technique before on his other films, such as his first film, Palmy Days (Cowan 87). It might
be said that all these tremendous feats of cinematography, and therefore the success and critical praise
of the film, are due more to Toland than Welles (Cowan 84). Either way, this film would undoubtedly
not be as monumental without this extraordinary technique. It allowed for scenes to be more dramatic
and for the enriching of them through the lightning mix (Cook 330). Interactions are layered, the plot
grows more comprehensive, and yet it s all done through an unmoving camera truly

Why Is It Important To Respect Veterans
No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted Aesop . I believe in an America to where there
is kindness. When kindness, of respected veterans. I also think of when/everyone has the same level of
respect. Also when there is shelter for all the homeless or somewhere for them to go. This is what I
believe America should be like and what it is to me. When veterans are respected they know that
everyone are about them. I also think of them being able to have more respect than we do because
they risked their lives just for us. Plus, veterans should have equal rights. But most importantly they
should be able to go somewhere and have no one look down on them. In my mind veterans should be
respected no matter what. There should also be

Essay on Lesson of the Evils of Liquor
A chemistry teacher wanted to teach his 9th grade class a lesson about the evils of liquor, so he
produced an experiment that involved a glass of water, a glass of whiskey, and two worms.
quot; Now, class, observe the worms closely, quot; he said, putting a worm first into the water. The
worm in the water writhed about, happy as a worm in water could be.
The second worm he put into the whiskey. It writhed painfully, and quickly sank to the bottom, dead
as a doornail.
quot; Now, what lesson can we derive from this experiment? quot; the teacher asked.
One of the students raised his hand and wisely, responded, quot;Drink whiskey and you won t get
worms. quot;

  • 2. Cathy Song The Youngest Daughter Clarissa Reyna Mrs. M. Segovia English IV AP March 12, 2016 A Deeper Meaning The works of poetry are often underappreciated and overlooked. The stories of plenty are being neglected in the education of our youth. The work of Cathy Song, per say, personally has never come up prior to the assigning of this paper. In Song s The Youngest Daughter , we are introduced to a variety of meanings in which an analysis full of depth is required to clearly interpret and understand what it is that the speaker is attempting to bring across through the use of clever diction. The poem in itself also contains a compilation of carefully puzzle together literary techniques that are taught to be broken down to provide a good understanding of a work of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When analyzing literature, it is very important to take it one puzzle piece at a time. Deconstructing a work of literature can be difficult if the path isn t taken correctly and the work isn t completely broken down for understanding. In Cathy Song s poem, the audience is able to understand the situation the speaker is in due to the vivid images that Song provides. The imagery in the poem can be identified as metaphorical (figure of speech in which a phrase is applied to something not literally applicable and order to suggest a resemblance). The reader can also analyze the setting through the metonymy (the use of the name of one thing for that of another thing) portrayed. Last but not least, the poem can be deconstructed with the use of the symbolism (the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities) that can be found when the poem is taken apart piece by piece. Now that we have a better understanding of what it is that is going to be analyzed, let s begin to take a look at the poem through the eyes of a deconstructionist. Cathy Song s The Youngest Daughter is clearly about a codependent relationship between a mother and daughter, the mother s youngest daughter, to be specific. The poem is displayed in the view of first person, for the daughter is the speaker. The poem is focused ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Sigmund Freud And The Human Psyche Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who studied in various subjects such as philosophy and physiology (Freud 1992). Freud was the founder of psychoanalysis with his methods still being used in the field of psychology, which highlights the pathological processes in mental life. The most important aspect of Freud s ideas was the human psyche (personality) has more that has more than one aspect. Freud (1923) separated the psyche into 3 sections known as the Id, Ego and superego whereby they develop during different stages of our lives. Accordingly to Freud s model, the id is the instinctual and primitive part of the mind that contains sexual and aggressive drives which contains hidden memories (Sletvold 2013 pg.1022). Garcia (1995) describes that it is through psychosexual activity where a human being establishes important interpersonal connections and an infant is contended with libidinal tensions (sexual drives of life components). Oral is the first stage of Freud s psychosexual theory which of 0 1 year of the infant and engages in how the mouth is the pleasure centre for development. Freud believed that children were born with a sucking reflex and therefore desired their mother s breast which gives psychological benefits as the child is being nourished on nutrients. This then indicates how Freud s theory influences health and social needs during the first stages of child development. Moreover, it is suggested that Natalie s mother may not have breast fed her child as Garcia (1995) further explains a child may develop negative habits if the oral needs are not met during infancy and could affect the next stages of a child s development. The second stage anal develops during 1 3 years of age where children learn thee control their bodily functions manifested in toilet training. Garcia (1995) discusses that improper resolution at this stage whereby the parents are toilet training their child too early, may possibly result in a child who is uptight and overly obsessed with order; meaning that if unpathetic and frustrated parents/guardians deal with the infant harshly, exposure, shame and negative feelings of invasion maybe become associated with a natural body function. ... • 4. Essay about Howard Stern How might one explain Howard Stern? Yes, he is a refreshing change from the typical, politically correct figure, and he provides humor and sex for late night audiences who are growing weary of Leno and Letterman. And while Howard Stern, shock jock turned television host, is more on the same wavelength as a Jerry Springer than a late night comic, Stern has always claimed like Jerry that his show is just an act. The idea that Howard Stern could come close but not too close to naked women on his television show, might have created the impression that this was just an act after all. Although he has achieved remarkable success for an unremarkable act, he is obviously not happy in his personal life. What Stern continues to do is to integrate his radio persona with real life and in some ways, he cannot separate the two. What most people know about Stern s one big mistake had nothing to do with a lesbian bimbo getting too close, but rather his talking about Alison s miscarriage on the air. That is what most know about Howard Stern. His life has been aired in the film Private Parts and he tells the world how he feels every day. While he is flamboyant, and pushes the envelope, one thing is true. Howard Stern is at least consistent. What does this mean? While Stern on one hand objectifies women on the show, and then talks about his wife lovingly, that is a contradiction. But he maintains that this act is just that and both parts of that personality co exist. Many wonder why the show is still on the air as it is somewhat offensive and really does nothing new, even as the years go by. Ratings had in fact dropped for this successful host, but they soon picked up again. Donovan reported that while Stern s Saturday night show had been in the doldrums, the marital breakup had helped ratings (Donovan 226). But one question remains. What will Stern do now that he is on available again? That is not an easy one to answer. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Islamic Resistance Movement, also known as al Harakah al Muqawama al Islamiya (Hamas), has proven to be an extremely agile and capable terrorist organization in Palestine. They benefit from a deep rooted sociocultural infrastructure, highly lethal tactics and a complex hierarchy of leadership, all of which have allowed the organization to prosper for over two decades. As where 90% of terrorist groups wither and rapidly falter, Hamas has been able to quickly adapt to the constantly changing political and social environment of Palestine . By the 1970 s, the Palestinian population was disillusioned by secularism, Westernization and materialism, and many looked toward the Muslim Brotherhood and the Islamic revival as an alternative . A drastic turn of events led to niche in Palestine that a more violent facet of the Muslim Brotherhood was willing to fill. Since the 1950 s, the Muslim Brotherhood complemented the spiritual services provided in mosques with social and welfare services, delivered through a network of clinics, schools, charities, drug treatment centers, and even sports clubs . However, since 1988, with the onset of the fist intifada, Hamas has followed an oscillatory pattern of violence and social charitable work. During the first and second intifada, Hamas inspired the greater Palestinian public to support violent means to incite change in the region. Conversely, during the Oslo peace process, when the majority of Palestinians did not condone the level of violence that was seen during the first intifada, Hamas dedicated more time towards their social roots, ultimately increasing their grassroots support. During these lulls in violence with Israel, Hamas successfully institutionalized Islamism in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. After reading Anne Frank s diary, watching the movie, reading the play, and researching the Holocaust I agree with Anne Frank s statement. Betacyanin Essay Effects of temperature manipulation and solution treatment on the Beta vulgaris craca plant cell membrane and the change of the concentration of betacyanin when placed under these various stresses Introduction: The Beta vulgaris craca plant, commonly referred to as the beet root contains a pigment, red in colour, called betacyanin. The betacyanin s containment within the cells of the beet root cell relies on the stability of the plant s membrane structure. The manipulation of the cell s membranes through temperature change and solution treatments often causes damage to the vacuoles within the cell which contain betacyanin. Performing this experiment provides evidence and example of how various stresses effect this membrane and to what extent will they remain intact. Materials and Methods: To obtain the standard curve for betacyanin, a spectrophotometer was used to measure the absorbance level of the various concentrations of betacyanin within the water solvent. The beet root was cut up into tiny 5mm uniformed disks to allow for the maximum leakage per test tube. In order to observe the effects of the various temperature manipulations, the test was performed six times at various temperatures. For this test the beets were placed into separate non permeable plastic bags and were then completely submerged in several water baths set at the temperatures of 25ºC, 5ºC, 25ºC, 45ºC, 65ºC and 85ºC for 2 minutes each. Once the plastic bags were removed from the baths, the beet discs themselves were removed and then placed into different test tubes of water with the temperatures set at room temperature for fifteen minutes. The test tubes underwent vigorous spinning by a vortex machine every five minutes to allow for maximum leakage results per beet disk manipulation. Once the beets sat in the water for fifteen minutes, 2mL of the surrounding solvent was poured into a cuvette to be measured with the spectrophotometer. • 12. Essay about analysis of Edmund Spenser s sonnet 67 Edmund Spenser Sonnet 67 Edmund Spenser s Sonnet 67 is one of 85 sonnets from Amoretti which was written about his courtship of Elizabeth Boyle. Spenser and Boyle were married in 1594. Sonnet 67 uses a hunting themed metaphor common in 16th century England comparing the woman to a deer and the man to a huntsman in pursuit. Sonnet 67 appears to have been inspired by an earlier work by Petrarch, Rima 190, but with a different ending. In this paper we will take an in depth look at this work, also commonly referred to as Lyke as a Huntsman . First we will take a look at a literal interpretation of Sonnet 67. The gentle deare returnd the selfe same way, (Spenser ll. 7) shows that the woman comes back towards the man. However, she did not return to him specifically but just happened upon him in her search for someone or something else, Thinking to quench her thirst at the next brooke (Spenser ll. 8). Now we will look at the second half of Sonnet 67, also in a metaphorical sense. The woman sees that the man is no longer chasing after her There she beholding me with mylder looke, (Spenser ll. 9) and suddenly decides he might not be such a bad suitor after all Sought not to fly, but fearelesse still did bide: (Spencer ll.10). Spenser turns this piece around from the original Petrarch piece here. He shows that it is the woman that is in control as opposed to the man. He reaches out to her nervously because she has been running from him all this time and now she seems to be encouraging and wanting his affections. He appears hopeful that his sentiments will be well received by the woman and at the same time fearful of rejection. But she allows him to court her now and encourages him to love her instead of playing hard to get and running off again Till I in hand her yet halfe trembling tooke, / And with her owne goodwill hir fyrmely tyde (Spenser ll. 11 and 12). After the War Baldwin states that the former puritanical views of whites will be challenged. Musicians such as Elvis Presley were the first to issue this challenge to white society. Early rockers such as Elvis would pave the way for social commentary in music that would add much fire to the Civil Rights Movement. In order to fully understand the explosion in popularity of black music in the years following World War II, one must understand the social conditions in which blacks and whites lived in the American South. An article entitled Not Just the Same Old Show on my Radio delves into the very issues behind racism. The article names aspects necessary for social segregation to exist: 1.) There must be a stigmatism of the oppressed group. 2.) There must be some sort of labeled interaction between groups. 3.) There must be a hierarchy of discrimination. (Kloosterman, Quispel 152) In the case of the American South we see evidence of the Baldwin s Puritan dicta in each of theses points. Ethanol has been going into gasoline since the 1920 s and was widely used during WWII (Gustafson, 2010). Ethanol gasoline became popular in the 1970 s due to the climbing prices of gasoline (Gustafson, 2010). • 15. Analysis Of Dulce Et Decorum Est Horrors of the Trenches Wilfred Owen s Dulce et Decorum Est is a poem made of four stanzas in an a, b, a, b rhyme scheme. There is hardly any rhythm to the entire poem, although Owen makes it sound like it is in iambic pentameter in some lines. Every stanza has a different amount of lines, ranging from two to twelve. To convey the poem s purpose, Owen uses an unconventional poem style and horrid, graphic images of the frontlines to convey the unbearable circumstances that many young soldiers went through in World War I. Not only did these men have to partake in such painful duties, but these duties contrasted with the view of the war made by the populace of the mainland country. Many of these people are pro war and would never see the battlefield themselves. Owen s use of word choice, imagery, metaphors, exaggeration, and the contrast between the young, war deteriorated soldiers and populace s favorable view of war creates Owen s own unfavorable view of the war to readers. The title and final lines of the poem is Latin for It is sweet and honorable. At first glance, the title may seem to be supportive of the war, however it is the ultimate irony of the story. The title uses the words sweet and honor to open the reader to ideas of these feelings. The first stanza portrays the bleakness of the battlefield for these young soldiers. Most people engage with social media without stopping to think what the effects are on our lives, whether positive or negative. Are we as a society becoming more concerned with Facebook friends than we are with the people we interact with face to face in our daily lives? What will the longterm effects of today s social media use be? There are many positive aspects, but there are equally as many dangers that come with the use of sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google +, Tumblr, Instagram, gaming sites, and blogs. Social media has both negative and positive effects on society, it is up to the user to decide what impact they want to make. • 18. Tao Te Ching Analysis Tao Te Ching: A Self Help Book for Americans There is no question that America is one of the most self centered countries in the world, and because of this, we tend to avoid situations and issues that have no immediate impact on us. Desensitization on this large of a scale can be dangerous, and it is imperative that we begin to relearn traits such as kindness and compassion. The Tao Te Ching, while not very familiar to the average westerner, is filled with numerous verses that speak directly about the negative aspects of American culture and how we should be behaving. While the news spouts horror stories daily about the terrible events in the world, remembering the teachings of the Tao can help to alter our actions in the future. Some of the most monumental lessons from the Tao are those that seek to correct greed, grow trust, and enforce peace, and from them we can learn how to improve western culture with compassion and respect. Verse 3 of the Tao begins with a very simple statement, but it is one that many Americans would have trouble following: Don t glorify heroes (3). Our entire entertainment system is based on celebrities and elevating people for their accomplishments, no matter how trivial they may be. Hollywood likes to take small events, or people, and blow them up larger than life and milk them for all they re worth, until something better comes along. This is painfully obvious in many of today s celebrities, especially the Kardashian family. Famous for being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Hardball Summary Chris Matthew s Hardball consists of four different parts containing different themes and policies on how the political world is run. All four parts: Alliances, Enemies, Deals, and Reputations contain personal anecdotes, historical context of Presidents careers, and rules Matthew s has formed throughout political experience. The beginning of each chapter starts off with a quote that foreshadows the subject of each chapter. Although Matthews does establish important rules to follow as a politician, I disagree with some of his points even though I am a democrat like him. Part One, Alliances, starts off with the importance of one on one relationships. The sole purpose of these one on one relationships, which in political terminology is known as retail politics can provide a personal and political awareness for the other individual s concerns. This triggers a chance for the one who is performing the retail action the opportunity to network. Lyndon B. Johnson created the Johnson ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I m glad to know that Matthews took the risk of knocking on many top politicians doors in order to seek job opportunities, and I m also glad that he took a lesson in starting from a smaller position than just sprinting to the top. A lot of people are desperate for a reward, but what they don t realize is that it takes years to get to that destination. The Mrs. Sanabria classroom was very organized and safe too. She used technology and classroom physical resources cleverly because the way she fixed the classroom chairs that seemed appropriate for her planned learning activities. One of the main advantages I noticed of having such chairs setting is that she was able to address more often all her students. Consequently, the amount of interaction between her and the learners was evenly distributed. From my point of view, the instructional setting of this class was warm, open and tolerant. The overall setting of the classroom was pleasant and productive. There were a good rapport and friendly balance between instructor and learners interchange. Students participation was dynamic and enthusiastic. The pupils also seemed well ordered, so the classroom rules must have been well founded. No discrimination or unfairness prevailed at all. Hamlet, Play and the Movie Essay examples Hamlet is a tragic play, written by William Shakespeare between 1599 and 1602, but as years have gone by, there have been made many movies produced in order to visually illustrate how the events of the play occurred. This allows the film director s interpretation of Hamlet to have an effect on the audience s understanding of the play, because they understand the play the same way as the director. One of the most significant act and scene in the whole play is Act I Scene V. The film work of Hamlet orchestrated by the director really focuses on being exactly as the written play by William Shakespeare. In movie version of Hamlet there is a lot of emphasis put into the feelings Hamlet has towards his mother. During the movie, there is lot of physical presence shown on screen when Hamlet and his Gertrude begin to argue. The interpretation of Franco Zeffirelli propose that further plot development due to the fact that Hamlet s character is being given more internal conflict to overcome, which also connects to the hypothesis that Gibson s Hamlet is stronger, both physically and mentally, in comparison to the original Hamlet. Also, Gibson s Hamlet being stronger shows the impact of the setting on the story of Hamlet, because everyone cast appears either healthier or stronger than one would imagine them from Shakespeare s original Hamlet. Plus, in the original play there are references made about the heavy headed revel that causes other nations to clepe us drunkards and with swinish phrase (Hamlet I.iv.21 23). Shakespeare s Hamlet is becoming enraged thinking about his Uncle tarnishing the reputation of his nation with his excessive drinking and partying. However, Gibson s Hamlet shows an efficiently operating town with broken barriers between social classes and small gardens and farms. • 25. Multinational Corporations Vs. Small And Medium... The fundamental goal of every company is to maximise profit to make money. That is the main reason people create businesses whether it be the large corporations or the small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Because of gloablisation, firms are competing in a highly competitive market where there is increasing pressure to find ways to perform better to get that above average returns. However, there is one thing other than economies of scale that greatly disadvantage the SMEs from the large multinational corporations (MNCs) and that is profit shifting. First of all, MNCs are organisations that operate in more than one country. Profit shifting is when MNCs utilise the differences in tax laws to shift income to low tax affiliates and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a journal article by Bartelsman and Beetsma (2000), they looked at the presence of profit shifting in response to the disparity of the corporate tax rates among several OECD countries. They used sectoral data as a method for their analysis. They have found that the magniture of profit shifting is sufficiently great and worthy of attention. They estimate that a one percent unilateral increase in tax rate will result in a three percent decline in corporate tax revenues, where the organisation s profit is unchanged. Moreover, the researchers found that having stricter enforcement in an already high tax jurisdiction will have a negative impact on their tax revenues and that real activity is transferred to countries with lower tax rates or more lenient enforcement. As mentioned previously, increasing pressures of competition and the goal of making more profits are the reasons why organisations try to find ways to minimise their costs. However, profit shifting is done because they saw the substantial disparity of corporate tax rates among countries and thus, an opportunity to minimise costs (Bartelsman Beetsma, 2000; Holtzblatt et al., 2015). Exhibit 1 shows the corporate tax rates in developed countries (see Appendix). The excellent cinematography alone tells the story to the viewer. The audience s awareness of the plot is due to the techniques behind the screen, the lens used, the composition, every technical and artistic decision made (Cowan 90). Modern films might be driven by words and accented by fancy color technology, but in this film, we the audience are able to derive emotions and the inner psychology of characters through lighting, spatial narration, and the ever famous technique of deep focus. As with any non color film, the right lighting is absolutely crucial. We might wonder if it would have been half as effective in color as it was in black and white, as the stark differences of the chiaroscuro lighting add a tremendous amount to the characterization of Charles Foster Kane. Gregg Toland, the director of photography on Citizen Kane, had also used the technique before on his other films, such as his first film, Palmy Days (Cowan 87). It might be said that all these tremendous feats of cinematography, and therefore the success and critical praise of the film, are due more to Toland than Welles (Cowan 84). Either way, this film would undoubtedly not be as monumental without this extraordinary technique.
