18th Amendment Dbq
Most people in American feel like they have to do what is justful for our country. Sometimes
what we believe is right, can become the complete opposite. On January 16, 1919 the 18th
Amendment was passed, but did not come into effect until the following year. This prohibited the
manufacturing, distributing, and selling of all alcoholic liquor but didn t prohibit the
consumption of intoxicating beverages. When they first passed this document they believed
what they were doing was important. To start off, how did history lead up to the banning of
alcohol in all fifty states. Then what issues and questions that they had back then, the debate
today, and how it let up to a revolution. Finally, what s my opinion and how I interpret the
amendment and what is happening today that can relate to this. To begin, how did this
amendment become so popular? For a saloon keeper it was hard to earn profit so they sometimes
introduced vices such as gambling and prostitution into their establishments in an attempt to earn
more. Many Americans considered saloons offensive and for the lower classes. This helped
spark a wave of strong religious revivalism that swept through the United States in the 1820 s and
1830 s. Hundreds protested against alcohol which was driven by mostly religious groups who call
alcohol and drunkenness a national cruse . Many of the followers believe if they abolish it that
abuse and violence would end causing a sober nation. The first temperance legislation appeared

Loss of Species Due to the Biodiversity Crisis
The seriousness of the current biodiversity crisis and the increasingly loss of species diversity have
aroused the boldness in conservationists to propose not so conservative solutions. Such as an
attempt to restore in our present environment the wildlife diversity lost in the Pleistocene period.
This proposal is incited by Donlan et al. (2006) that call for restoration of missing ecological
functions and evolutionary potential of lost North American megafaunausing extant conspecifics
and related taxa . This essay will discuss the possible positive effects brought by the Pleistocene
rewilding and its major impediments. And it is perceptible that the obstacles in translocating
species similar to those that have been extinct for millennia in North America are so many, and its
plausibility so controversial, that this adventurous proposal requires a lot of reflection and
scientific labor before being considered a reasonable solution.
In the Americas, many mammals and their commensals were lost in the end of the Pleistocene
epoch, about 13,000 years ago (Martin 2005) and with them, many ecosystem processes and
services were lost. The Pleistocene rewilding intends to bring back the biodiversity that vanished
13,000 years ago, reinstituting ecological and evolutionary processes that were transformed or
eliminated by megafaunal extinctions (Donlan et al. 2006). Pleistocene rewilders also advocate this
conservation strategy based on aesthetic and ethical grounds; they argue that

Comparison In Walt Disney s Sleeping Beauty And Maleficent
Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent
Walt Disney s Sleeping Beauty story is widely considered one of Disney s best traditional
fairytales, and modern day Disney executives decided to translate the entire story to live action. I m
going to be comparing the Disney storybook version of Sleeping Beauty, to the modern day, live
action film, Maleficent, highlighting differences and similarities.
In the Disney story, we don t find out why Maleficent wished such a curse on Aurora. She just
showed up at the celebration, and cursed the baby. The fairy, Merryweather, was able to soften
the curse in the book, but in the film, Maleficent made it appear as if she was softening the
curse, although she didn t believe she was. In the film, Maleficent cursed Aurora because her
father, now the king, had Maleficent deep in love with him since they were children. Aurora s
father had always dreamed about being the king, and when he got the chance to pursue this
dream, he took it; breaking Maleficent s trust and her heart. He took her most beloved possession
from her her wings. Maleficent Thought she had found true love, because on her 16th birthday,
before the king had stolen her wings, he gave her true love s kiss. After finding out that royalty
was more important to Aurora s father than she was, she began to believe that there was no such
thing as true love. In the film Maleficent, there is a lot of background added to the story, whereas
in Disney s story Sleeping Beauty, there is virtually no background added to Maleficent s character,
or her intentions.
In Disney s story and in the live action film, the three good fairies were sent into the forest,
disguised as peasant women, to raise Aurora until the day after her 16th birthday. Aurora was
raised with no knowledge of where she came from, or that she was the princess of the land; she
was now named Briar Rose, for the sake of keeping her safe, and a secret. In the film, Maleficent
watches over Briar Rose and begins to interact with her and care about her, and love her. In both
the film and the storybook, a prince comes across Briar Rose, and they are instantly attracted to
each other. It is soon time for the princess to return to the castle, and her parents. In the book, the

The Odyssey And The Penelopiad By Margaret Atwood
The Odyssey and The Penelopiad s storyline are both based off the same social context as Homer
recorded the epic poem during Homeric society (when he was alive) however when the story was
composed the literary context is completely different in comparison to Atwood, as Atwood wrote
her novella The Penelopiad, in the 21 st century and homer recorded the epic poem during 8th C
BCE. The difference between each time period meant there were societal differences which had
different impacts on each of the stories literary context. The odysseyis a historical epic poem that
was verbally told by bards around ancient Greece and recorded by homer in 8thC BCE, following
the dark ages. During this time there was no real sense of freedom or self expression and people
were not very opinionated. This was because during this time, Homeric society was overruled by
patriarchal views and a hierarchy within their time, meaning some people were seen as much less
than others. In contrast to Margaret Atwood where her fictional Novella the Penelopiad was
crafted in 2005, during a modern society where freedom of speech was more or less accepted than
in Homeric society. The Odyssey has a major influence on Margaret Atwood s novella the
Penelopiad, as she based her opinions and perspective off the facts and historical content from the
Odyssey. The Penelopiad s central theme consists of the double standards that occurred against the
women within the Odyssey such as the maids and Penelope. Margaret

An Analysis Of Maurice Ravel s Le Tombeau De Couperin
They say what s old is new again. There is nothing new under the sun. What goes around comes
around. History repeats itself. These may be just a few banal sayings, but they might hold true
for classical music as well. Maurice Ravel s Le Tombeau de Couperin is one such example.
Written during the neo classical and neo baroque movements of the early 1900s, this clever piece
ties together French musical traditions, baroque styles, and World War I in just six short pieces.
This essay will detail the origins of the suiteform and the neo classical neo baroque movement, and
compare Le Tombeau de Couperin with Bach s French Suite no. 5 in G Major, BWV 816. Le
Tombeau de Couperin was written from 1914 1917 during World War I. Ravel served in World War
I as a truck driver but was discharged in 1916 due to his frailness and poor health (Sebastian, 2010
2016. The war affected Ravel deeply, and it served as part of his inspiration for Le Tombeau de
Couperin. Each of the six movements is dedicated to friends that Ravel lost in World War I, as
listed in the Dover edition score:
I. Prelude: to the memory of Lieutenant Jacques Charlot
II. Fugue: to the memory of Secondary lieutenant Jean Cruppi.
III. Forlane: to the memory of Lieutenant Gabriel Deluc.
IV. Rigaudon: to the memory of Pierre and Pascal Gaudin
V. Minuet: to the memory of Jean Dreyfus
VI. Toccata: to the memory of Captain Joseph de Marliave (Ravel, 1997) The titular Couperin was
a French baroque harpsichordist who wrote and

Conflict Between Principles And Power In Captain America
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a movie attempting to understand the confusing and
contradictory world that is modern America s political and social order. It is a movie that is
based upon the modern era and yet somehow timeless. It is a movie that is firmly rooted in the
Fantasy/ Sci Fi genre with super soldiers, flying aircraft carriers, and a bevy of comic book
characters. It is also a movie which perfectly encapsulates the chaotic and bewildering nature of the
war on terror and the surveillance state. Though it is a movie set entirely in the United Statesand
primarily is focused on domestic policy, the primary conflict is one applying to foreign policy as
well and this is the conflict between principles and power, between survival and ideals. Though the
movie may initially seem to favor principles over power, upon a closer look the movie focuses a
great deal on power and draws greatly on Realist theory for its worldview.
The axis of the movie is the reveal to Captain America that S.H.I.E.L.D., the multinational defense
organization he works for, is developing the technology to launch preemptive strikes. This disturbs
the physical manifestation of American values and leads him to confront S.H.I.E.L.D s director
Nicholas J. Fury. The ensuing argument perfectly encapsulates the conflict between principles and
power in post 9 11 America. When it is pointed out he had done some morally questionable actions
during WWII Captain America responds yeah we compromised.

Michael Corleone Character Analysis Essay
III. Characters
A.The Godfather
Michael Corleone, the youngest son of Vito Corleone, initially doesn t want to have anything to
do with his family. He is apparently a law abiding citizen and is evidently a war veteran. He
seems to be a good natured and tries to avoid identifying with Corleone activites, yet is fiercely
loyal to his family, especially to his father. He is called by his peers as a civilian and refuses to
acknowledge him as a criminal. Wnating to live an ordinary life was his choice, until an incident
where he botched an assassination attempt on their patriarch; Vito Corleone, led to Michael trying to
return the favor to Sollozo and McClusckey. This will eventually lead him entangled with the
family affairs. With the family trying to prevent a war between other families, Michael starts to
become more and more involved. His vengeful nature, coupled with his ruthless intellect earned the
respect of his followers. He ordered the hit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is intelligent, clever and an excellent speaker. Like the tagline of the movie, he frequently
makes an offer he can t refuse . Another trait is his ability to read people, especially during
Bonasera s plea to the don. He is also a ruthless person, if he cannot deal with words, guns and
bullets will. Even with his supposed evil, he is seen as many as a very loving father and many
people love him. He was clearly hurt when he found out Michael gunned down Sollozo and
McClusckey, indicating he loved Michael that he didn t want his son to be part of any crime.
He is able to separate blood and water, and embrace them both, evident when he adopted and raised
Tom Hagen like he was a son. He also show a deep sense of morality, not agreeing to the dawning
drug business at first, and when he did agree, he proposed that it should never be sold to kids and
near schools. Near the end of his life, he became more relaxed and was able to enjoy his remaining

Cadbury To Be Swallowed Whole?
1. Emerging market is a financial market of a developing country, usually a small market with a
short operating history. Monopoly power is the power of a monopoly firm where they are able to
control or set a price in its market.
2. Kraft s marketing strategy will benefit significantly from buying Cadbury in two different
ways. Firstly, when we look at the brand portfolio of Kraft, which is the world s second biggest
food company. It is clear that there are plenty of old timer cash cows, such as cheese, Nabisco and
Suchard, but there are only very few rising stars. According to the Boston Matrix, cash cow means

Kraft s acid test ratio:

2007: 3800+400 / 10700 = 0.39
2008: 4000+800 / 6900 = 0.69
If Kraft generate ВЈ1.4 billion of cash to buy Cadbury,
Current ratio 2008: (2300+4000+800) 4100 / 6900 = 0.43
The acid Test Ratio 2008: 6700 4100 / 10700 = 0.24
Liquidity ratios measure the business ability to pay all its short term debts, it can be divided
into current ratio and the acid test ratios. Current ratio examines the liquidity position of a firm,
an ideal current ratio would be 1.5 : 1. The Acid Test Ratio provides us a tighter measure of a firm
s liquidity, by comparing current assets and liabilities after omitting stock from the total current
assets. The ideal result for this ratio should be 1:1. These two ratios focus on the business financial
stability on the short term only. Referring to this case, by looking at both ratios of Kraft, its
obvious that they are having better year in 2008 as the

How Did The Enlightenment Influence The American And...
There were many philosophers that influenced the Enlightenment and had a huge impact on the
American and French Revolution. They all came together to create a better place for people who
wouldn t speak up for themselves and to make it easier for the people to be included in
governmental decisions. One philosopher that had the biggest impact on the American and French
Revolution was John Locke. John Locke was a philosopher who was born in 1632 and died in
1704. John Locke went to Westminster and then Christ Church University of Oxford, from which
he received an outstanding education. He studied in Medicine, and then became a wealthy
philosopher writing about topics like philosophy, education, and etc. John Locke s philosophy for

John Locke believed that every man had natural rights, which meant everyone is born with
certain rights that couldn t be taken away from one and others. For example John Locke said,
which meant that everyone is equal, and no one can put another down due to his/her feeling of
themselves. He believed that these rights were life, liberty, and property. Locke believed if the
people gave some of their freedoms to their ruler, then the ruler could not take away the people s
Natural Rights. This was called the Social Contract. Locke also believed that rulers had rules to
follow too. If the rulers didn t follow the rules/agreement with the people, that ruler could be
overthrown (lose of power). The United States used John Locke s philosophy still to this day
because the rights we come with such as every human is automatically free and given a chance to

Star Wars is series of the fantastic films that depict the political tensions and wars among the
representatives of different planets in the distant galaxy. The films include a number of positive
heroes and charismatic anti heroes, such as Darth Vader(Anakin Skywalker) and Kylo Ren (Ben
Solo). Both personages have a number of similarities and can be described as the typical
Byronic characters. Highly ambitious Anakin Skywalker, who was expected to become a
powerful Jedi, has joined the dark side and become a villain. Being inspired by the example of
Darth Vader, the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa has decided to follow the path of his grandfather.

The current article discusses the typical features of the Byronic hero. Also, it proposes another
concept, the Lilithian personage, who is a female version of the Byronic hero. According to
Kokdemir, both Byronic and Lilithian heroes are the archetypical images that rooted in the ancient
myths. The main characteristic of these personages is the non conformist attitude to the social
standards. Therefore, the Byronic hero deviates from the typical personages, embracing the unique

Persuasive Narrative Story
``As I started to get out of the water I feel a sharp pain at the bottom of my left foot. Ouch I

walked to the other pier and jumped off.
As soon as I jump in the green water, I felt the coolness of the water go over me. As I start to

Unless you want to spend the rest of the night in your room and have no electronics my dad

Acknowledging my Privilege
I have always thought about myself as just a person. After taking this course, I think of myself as
a white person. To me, being colorblind and attempting to look at everyone as just a person, were
ways I avoided being racist. This course, taught by Dr. Bianca Williams, has enabled me to change
my views on racism and race to a move correct outlook. I now understand that it is my duty to be
able to acknowledge my race and other identities and the privileges that come with being a white,
middle class, heterosexual person. I used to think that interpersonal racism was the main
problem in the United States, but after this course realize that institutional racism is the
problem. This course, coupled with readings from Devon W. Carbado on his piece titled
Privilege , Beverly Daniel Tatum s article titled Talking about Race, Learning about Racism ,
Brittney Cooper s article on The Politics of Black Women s Hair and Audre Lorde s article called
The Uses of Anger: Women Responding to Racism , I have shifted my views on race and racism
to a more constructive and correct outlook. Being a woman was always the largest piece of my
identity. I focused my attention the oppression that comes with identifying as a woman. I resisted
against the ideals of patriarchy and spent time in college starting a club that promoted and
supported women in business fields. However, I never stopped to think about the intersection of my
identities and how my other identities

Howard Gardner s Multiple Intelligences Theory
Howard Gardner said, Anything that is worth teaching can be presented in many different ways.
These multiple ways can make use of our multiple intelligence. Howard Gardner has written a book
about a theory he called the Multiple Intelligences theory, in which Gardner states that people have
one main intelligencefrom which they learn. There are eight different intelligences, according to
Gardner, explaining how people learn best and the different strengths of learning they exhibit.
Although Gardner s Multiple Intelligences theory has been around since the 1980s, it is still
relevant and useful to those in all areas of the education process. Some people believe that Howard
Gardner s theory is too broad and difficult to write a curriculum around. It has been proven,
however, in certain instances, that the utilization of this theory raises students scores and their
success rates. Those individuals who are in school to become educators are taught that, whatever
expectations they have for the students, those levels will be met by the students. If the student has
already failed in the teacher s mind, then the student will continue to fail. Students are very
perceptive individuals and can tell what teachers feelings are toward them. This consequence is
why future teachers are told to have high expectations for every student. In the article Empowering
Students through Multiple Intelligences, the story is told of a teacher who had a group of students

Analysis Of Through A Window By Jane Goodall
Connections within Jane Goodall s Through a Window
Throughout the term, reading the book, Through a Window by Jane Goodall has been quite
intriguing for me, in that it has inspired me with new ideas and perceptions about how our own
species has evolved over time. I have really enjoyed seeing the many similarities that hominids share
with other primate species, especially chimpanzees. Goodall s research only further proves that we
are not only extremely biologically similar to chimpanzees in our DNA, but have many behavioral
similarities as well. The film, Monkey in the Mirror also shows support for our likeness in
intellectuality. These documented findings on chimpanzeeand human resemblances provides the
strong evidence needed to conclude the fact that humans do indeed share a common ancestor with
great apes.
I found Goodall s chapter Mothers and Daughters very fascinating, and caught my interest the most
because I immediately found myself making connections within my own life and experiences.
Goodall compared the parenting styles of the two mothers, Flo, and Passion. These two chimps
have completely opposite ways of raising their young, with Flo being very loving, nurturing, and
caring of her daughter Fifi, while Passion was a very cold, harsh, and intolerant mother to her
daughter, Pom. You can easily see the dramatic difference in how their childhood shaped the two
chimpanzees in their adulthood, just how we commonly see this in humans as well. Fifi had a

Brockovich rounded up each individual and had them sign papers saying they were affected.
Brockovich then met with the owners once more and decided that twenty million dollars would be

The Decade Known as The Great Depression
The decade known as the Great Depression was an era filled with both hardship and tribulation.
Historians continue to debate the root causes of the collapse of the stock market which led the
country into depression. Other deride the ineptitude of the Canadian government s response to the
crisis. At any rate, the Dirty Thirties was a period of time unlike any other. While those who
suffered through it are largely gone, the memory of those dark days remains to this day.
Firstly, there are many factors that contributed to making the Great Depression start. Over

All the ranks on the social class had dropped. The poor became poorer than the poor. Finding
work was sporadic at best and it was impossible for men to pay for their homes which led to
people having to move into their cars, piano boxes and anything they could possibly find shelter
in. The Great Depression got farmers the worst as severe dust storms hit the prairies. Temperature
raised immensely in 1936 making wind storms hotter and drier, and with no rain there was no
crops. Western prairies became almost completely dependent on the export of wheat but grass
hoppers and plant diseases cause the last few crops destroyed. Farmers had to sell their farms as
debts raised because they couldn t afford their families as the drought prolonged. The school boards
had to decrease the number of teachers and increase the amount of students. Even marriage was
effected, while Canada experienced the Great Depression, many couples refrained from marrying
due to economic uncertainty and high unemployment. These causes of the Depression impacted the
everyday Canadian.
Moreover, the Canadian government took many measures to pull Canada out of the Depression
they tried, monthly relief rates, vouchers, governments money, relief camps, buying Canadian,

A Study On Attending Law School
Attending law school has always been a part of the plan since I was twelve or thirteen years old.
My interest was probably sparked by Hollywood s interpretation of what it means to be a lawyer.
I grew up thinking every day of a lawyer s life was like an episode of Law Order. Needless to say,
while my desire to go to law school has remained, my motivations have definitely changed. In
May of 2014 I began working at the Philadelphia District Attorney s Office shortly after earning
my paralegal certificate from Widener University. I had previously studied criminal justice and
political science at the University of Delaware and took and interest in criminal prosecution.
The DA s office has recently taken over traffic court after several judges were charged with
fixing tickets in exchange for favors. Ten new paralegals were hired for the DA s new traffic
court unit, myself included. In the grand scheme of things, traffic violations can seem a bit trivial.
However, being a paralegal with the traffic court unit was a unique and eye opening experience
that revealed some fundamental truths about the justice system. It is these fundamental truths that
motivate me to continue my path in the legal field, and to pursue a law degree. As a traffic court
paralegal, I have face to face encounters with defendants on an almost daily basis. As one might

Capitalism And Capitalism
Capitalism, as Speth explains, is an economic system that is geared toward accumulation of profit,
its tendency to change and expand. Root explains that the developed world has necessary tools to
guard themselves against uncertainty and risk. They also can count on social institutions and
welfare programs to manage risks. Engaging business activities, developed world is dealing with
riskby developing products and marketing, for instance. Developing and marketing new products
require capital, and capitalism by nature is geared toward capital accumulation, to make profits.
Whereas, as Root points out, the developing nations don t have enough capital to improve their
lives and climb out of poverty. The idea is that a poor nation not being able to invest, the economy
does not grow, so they remain poor. According to Root, the wealth gap between the rich and poor
nations has widened tremendously. However, it is necessary to also explore other contributing
factors for the economy of the developing nations not being able to grow.
However, Root explains that uncertainty and risk are the factors how developed countries have
grown rich by turning uncertainty into risk. Of course, the presence of institutions are needed to
make the risk management possible. For example, institutions might discourage people to acquire
education to learn new skills to engage business activities to accumulate capital (p. 4).
Further, innovation is needed to develop necessary technology for economic

The Change In Modern History Have Been Influenced By Many
The change in modern history have been influenced by many factors. Many which have to do with
progress, enlightenment, and new inventions. Three key factors that have changed us into a
modern society are steam engines , mass production and corporations. The invention of the steam
engine, specifically in transportation, has helped this change by helping with speed and efficiency
in transportation and businesses and influencing social lives. Another one of the factors of change
is Mass production, whether it was positive or negative, has had a huge effect on the transformation
to the modern age. It has helped evolve the modern world through economic and social changes
such as the dehumanization of workers, the reversed idea of individualism... Show more content on

The mass production of things affected the skills of the workers because they were no longer
doing multiple things in factories. The workers specialized in one part of the process because of
the use of assembly lines. Therefore, they didn t have the skills that they would ve had if each
person did everything or more than one things. Therefore, they got paid less as a result. The 19th
century assembly line also kept the workers working at a fast pace. One worker set the pace for the
rest so if one worker slowed down, the entire production was slowed down. This idea was expressed
in the movie Metropolis.
Also, although it was not a very enlightened concept, the workers were not seen as individuals, they
were more of estranged workers and not really important to the factory. They were payed so little
and could easily be replaced. Another example where there is no individualism is The Tiller
Girls (formed in 1889 by John Tiller). They worked as a group and no individual woman had any
special importance to the line, just as the workers in a factory. The Tiller Girls were seen as a
mass ornament, which doesn t celebrate individualism. The economic changes made has to do
with the the changes made to assembly lines and factories. Workers got paid less since they were
not skilled, and since it was at a faster pace there was more production. The faster pace kept
everyone in check. Therefore, profit

The Doors Biography Essays
The Doors Biography
From their beginnings during the summer of 1965 at Venice Beach, California, The Doors were a
band of creative energy, with most of the focus on Jim Morrison. His looks and talents clearly tell
why. Jim was well aware that the magic of The Doors could never have happened without the
fortunate talents of John Densmore, Robby Krieger, Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison. Robby
Krieger, for example, wrote lyrics and music that sounded a lot like Morrison s work, such songs
as quot;Light My Fire, quot; quot;Love Me Two Times, quot; and quot;Love Her Madly. quot;
There are many that think Jim was the only creative poet in the band, when in fact there were two.

By April 1971, The Doors had recorded six landmark studio LP s and a two record set of live
performances. The first seven discs with producer Paul A. Rothchild and the last one co produced
by The Doors and their career long engineer Bruce Botnick. The Doors and Elektra had grown into
world famed institutions.
The band s un stated goal was to accomplish musical alchemy, to fuse rock music with both existent
poetry and improvisational theater. Jim was influenced by the nineteenth century poet Arthur
Rimbaud and he dutifully imparted Rimbaud s philosophy to the group. Rimbaud advocated a
systematic quot;rational derangement of all the senses in order to achieve the unknown. quot;
Morrison was a man who would not, could not, and did not know how to compromise himself or
his art. He was driven to go all the way or die trying, the ultimate ecstatic risk taker. Manzarek,
Krieger and Densmore s contribution to this state of creative bliss cannot be underestimated. Jim
s improves onstage required the other three Doors to not merely play arrangements but to follow
Jim s unplanned creativity perfectly in one of the music s classic and most difficult feats the art of
perceptive chords. Jim once said, quot; For me, it was never really an act, those so called

Comparing War Poems Exposure And War Photographer
In war poems, war is always condemned, dispraised and demonstrated as a futile and tragic event.
In both poems, War Photographer by Duffy and Exposure by Owen, poets illustrate their suffering
and acrimony of conditions of war.
War Photographer is an inspiration of the friendship of the poet with a photographer of war. It is
also an illustration of the brutality of war and the apathy of those who might see the photos in
newspapers. Whereas, Exposure is a poem written by a solider who was honoured for his bravery
and then was killed in the battle; therefore, Exposure has more authenticity.
Both poets show a sense of duty in their poems and they use several imageries. For instance, in
Exposure, Owen conveys physical and mental suffering when he says Our ... Show more content on

In Exposure, Owen uses a contradiction of cold and warm to express the solider s delusional mind
which is demolishing from hypothermia. Likewise, in War Photographer, Duffy demonstrates a
contradiction between rural England and nightmarish ware zones.
In War Photographer, encampment reinforces the sense of chaos and anarchy of the world, whilst
in Exposure, Owen uses a burden in the first, third, fourth and final stanza with a short half line, But
nothing happens , which creates a circular structure implying never ending suffering.
Moreover, Owen heightens our awareness of the conditions under which men ludicrously suffer by
his application of alliteration and personification. Furthermore, he presents war with a picture of
communal endurances, togetherness, and courage by the use of repetition of pronouns, we and our

In Exposure, Owen uses a regular pattern of ABBA, which creates the sense of status and an
emphasis on monotony. Whereas in war photographer, the rhyme encourages the idea that he is

Critical Race Theory-Oppressive Framework
Findings The Researches were very consistent with the issue of overrepresentation, and linking it to
the concept of racialization. Many participants reported their experience is linked to, differential
treatment around racism and sexism, the fact that the majority of the researchers were female.
Often females have been more rude to females (Clark, 2011; Clark 2012). Future research shows

sciences; engineering allows you to directly approach a problem rather than being abstract about it.
Baking Club, just like Middle East Politics Club, is exactly that a practical solution to a real

intangible force difficult to combat), Baking Club is my personal response to a recent policy

The Effects Of Photography On The World War II
Photography is meant to capture the moment at hand, a moment in history that cannot be
duplicated, and in some aspects, attempt to physically hold a memory. However, not every
memory is made for the best. Joe Rosenthal snapped this photo on February 23, 1945 during the
Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. This picture, taken hurriedly in fear of missing the moment ,
depicts six soldiers: five Marines and one United StatesNavy Corpsman from the United States
hoisting the American flag. These soldiers were standing on the corpses of many people that
fought and died in the battle. Having been awarded the Pulitzer Prize, it became a symbol of the
United States s power; however, the battle ironically was so minuscule in the span of World War II
that it is not taught in most history classes. Americans have glorified the picture without
acknowledging the deeper meaning of its history.
The war resulted in casualties of over a million people, which was the largest amount of deaths
recorded in human history. It destroyed numerous countries such as Germany, Italy, Japan and the
United States. As depicted in the picture, the war resulted with the United States as superpower
and created a sense of balance within the world. World War II was one of the most significant
times in history. World War II had lasted six years in consequence of a continuing number of
conflicts. The picture shows how America is marking its territory as a sign of dominance over the
other countries that were a

Labor Vs. Capital During The Late 1800s
The ensuing conflict, between labor vs. capital, during the late 1800s initiated a struggle of power
in the workforce between the rich industrialists (or corporate leaders) and the middle class/lower
class workers. The Capitalists had intervened with the protests orchestrated by the workers, ensuring
that the power remains with them. The strategies of the industrialists and the unique ways of
protesting from the workers, contributes to spur a vigorous argument between the employers and
their employees. The workers tried their best to ameliorate their working conditions by forming
numerous unions, trying to fix currency (gold to paper) to economically help themselves, refusing
to go to work, resorting to violence and non violence, etc. However, the Corporate leaders kept an
upper hand and dissolved the workers ambitions by hiring scabs, creating a strong relationship with
the military (Pullman strike), controlling and fixing policies at work, hiring immigrants for cheap
labor, etc. Throughout the late 1800s, the corporate leaders have been able to successfully prevent
workers who had resorted to: forming unions, protests (ex. Pullman strike and Homestead strike),
violence (ex. Haymarket Sq. Riot), etc., from achieving a radical solution to the workers issues with
the management by using several different strategies including but not limited to: hiring scabs
/immigrants in the Homestead strike, using government support in the Pullman strike and keeping

The Cultural Expectations And Rules
Norms
A norm is something that is standard in society. Within sociology, it is specifically the cultural
expectations and rules that a person within the culture is supposed to uphold. Norms tell an
individual how they should behave within a certain situation. According to Saul McLeod of
Simply Psychology (2008), people are expected to behave in a way that is not random. Norms are
social standards that are agreed upon by a society so that members of a culture do not deviate into
areas that others would consider abnormal and wrong. Also norms vary by culture, so one culture
that has an agreed upon and socially practiced norm may vary from another culture that does not do
the same thing and instead has different norms. Each culture s norms differ based on beliefs and
customs.
Norms are a general category of social rules. Taboos, laws, mores, and folkwaysare all norms. A
taboo is something that a culture forbids. Laws are strictly enforced formal rules by the
government or social powers within a culture. A more is a norm related to morals; what is deemed
right or not within a particular society. Also folkways are customs that are socially accepted, but
are not strictly enforced. Following norms are important because an individual is only socially
accepted if they follow the set norms.
The norm that I violated is a norm within American culture. It is a violation of a norm to clip your
toenails when around a group of other individuals within this culture. This norm is

Abstract
Visual media such as video games have developed so much over the last twenty years. Games

objectification, overly sexualised characters mostly female and poor representation of female
characters for example damsel in distress . These issues have been changing over time but are still

Legacy:
In 1944, with ClarkВґs encouragement and financial support from Phipps father, the Northside
Testing and Treatment Center was opened in Harlem. In 1948 it became the Northside Center for
Child Development, it provided testing services and psychological consultations for behavioral
problems. They realized that the Board of Education wasn t doing proper testing for minority
students. The students were put into special needs classes, so Clark started to do his own testing
and realized that many of these students intelligence was above average. (Nyman, 2010). The
Treatment Center not only provided child care information for parents, but also aided teens for
vocational guidance. At one point these resources were only offered to poor black people, but over
time it was opened to anyone (Jones Pettigrew, 2005). Regardless, they received no payment from

first walked onto stage I thought he was a businessman because he was clean cut, dressed

the superintendent outfit because it looked like a janitor uniform. When the superintendent

Therefore, I initially thought she was just a janitor. Later in the performance the audience found

Is the Self Reference Effect More Effective On Children s Memory Rather Than Adults?
Madison Herley
Professor Cooke
General Psychology 101
April 21, 2016
Abstract
The study will investigate the self reference effect with two different age groups. The two age
groups will be young and older adults, trying to obtain material. The first group is told to relate
that information to themselves or past experiences and, the second group is only told to review the
material given. The purpose of this experiment is to see if the self reference effect is more beneficial
to children rather than adults. To conduct this study, the observer has to use the naturalistic research
stragesty and also see the within experimental designs. In order to have a positive income on the
self reference effect. Throughout, my research I have found, like young adults, older adults
exhibited superior recognition for self referenced items relative to the items encoded with the
alternate orienting tasks, but self referencing did not restore their memory to the level of young
adults (Gutchess, A. H., Kensinger, E. A., Yoon, C., Schacter, D. L. 1). Thus, from past research
experiments the self reference effect has seen to be more limited in adults than children.
Does the self reference effect more beneficial to children than adults? My study is based on how
the self reference effect will help children s memory rather than adults because children s brains are
still developing. Children develop a cohesive

Crime And Containment Theory Analysis
Reflecting back on when I was 18 years old I walked out of a pizza place without paying. It was
over the summer before school started up again, and I was with two of my best friends from high
school. After this class and covering many different understandings of crime and delinquency, I was
able to integrate some ideas on why I committed the crimeand possibly why others commit crime.
Focusing on Jack Katz Chapter 2 Cheap Thrills, Cohen, Reckless, and Hirschi s theories I was
able to analysis my crime compared to an overall reasoning of why people commit crimes.
Comparing my crime to Sneaky Thrills of Katz ideas on crime and why people steal, specifically
why did I steal. Sneaky thrills refers to non violent crimes that have no personal... Show more

In my understanding, there is no true way of knowing why people commit crimes, but there can
be explanations or inclinations to show a process or system that is not working or shows patterns
that can help prevent crimes. In the beginning I tried to justify my crime, but acknowledging the
different theories and how some overlap with one another and even contradict shows that human
behavior can simply be just sporadic, in the moment with no real intention. Katz discusses this
sporadic moment in which people steal for the thrill as a general overarching idea, which can
lead to looking more specifically at Cohen s idea that in my case there was some peer influence
that could have lead me to committing the crime. There was also a connection between Reckless
and Hirschi in how they both talk about family, school, and community which again can relate
back to peer influence or subcultures that could occur when people feel secluded or how the
minorities being lead into a life of

  • 2. 18th Amendment Dbq Most people in American feel like they have to do what is justful for our country. Sometimes what we believe is right, can become the complete opposite. On January 16, 1919 the 18th Amendment was passed, but did not come into effect until the following year. This prohibited the manufacturing, distributing, and selling of all alcoholic liquor but didn t prohibit the consumption of intoxicating beverages. When they first passed this document they believed what they were doing was important. To start off, how did history lead up to the banning of alcohol in all fifty states. Then what issues and questions that they had back then, the debate today, and how it let up to a revolution. Finally, what s my opinion and how I interpret the amendment and what is happening today that can relate to this. To begin, how did this amendment become so popular? For a saloon keeper it was hard to earn profit so they sometimes introduced vices such as gambling and prostitution into their establishments in an attempt to earn more. Many Americans considered saloons offensive and for the lower classes. This helped spark a wave of strong religious revivalism that swept through the United States in the 1820 s and 1830 s. Hundreds protested against alcohol which was driven by mostly religious groups who call alcohol and drunkenness a national cruse . Many of the followers believe if they abolish it that abuse and violence would end causing a sober nation. The first temperance legislation appeared ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Loss of Species Due to the Biodiversity Crisis The seriousness of the current biodiversity crisis and the increasingly loss of species diversity have aroused the boldness in conservationists to propose not so conservative solutions. Such as an attempt to restore in our present environment the wildlife diversity lost in the Pleistocene period. This proposal is incited by Donlan et al. (2006) that call for restoration of missing ecological functions and evolutionary potential of lost North American megafaunausing extant conspecifics and related taxa . This essay will discuss the possible positive effects brought by the Pleistocene rewilding and its major impediments. And it is perceptible that the obstacles in translocating species similar to those that have been extinct for millennia in North America are so many, and its plausibility so controversial, that this adventurous proposal requires a lot of reflection and scientific labor before being considered a reasonable solution. In the Americas, many mammals and their commensals were lost in the end of the Pleistocene epoch, about 13,000 years ago (Martin 2005) and with them, many ecosystem processes and services were lost. The Pleistocene rewilding intends to bring back the biodiversity that vanished 13,000 years ago, reinstituting ecological and evolutionary processes that were transformed or eliminated by megafaunal extinctions (Donlan et al. 2006). Pleistocene rewilders also advocate this conservation strategy based on aesthetic and ethical grounds; they argue that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Comparison In Walt Disney s Sleeping Beauty And Maleficent Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent Walt Disney s Sleeping Beauty story is widely considered one of Disney s best traditional fairytales, and modern day Disney executives decided to translate the entire story to live action. I m going to be comparing the Disney storybook version of Sleeping Beauty, to the modern day, live action film, Maleficent, highlighting differences and similarities. In the Disney story, we don t find out why Maleficent wished such a curse on Aurora. She just showed up at the celebration, and cursed the baby. The fairy, Merryweather, was able to soften the curse in the book, but in the film, Maleficent made it appear as if she was softening the curse, although she didn t believe she was. In the film, Maleficent cursed Aurora because her father, now the king, had Maleficent deep in love with him since they were children. Aurora s father had always dreamed about being the king, and when he got the chance to pursue this dream, he took it; breaking Maleficent s trust and her heart. He took her most beloved possession from her her wings. Maleficent Thought she had found true love, because on her 16th birthday, before the king had stolen her wings, he gave her true love s kiss. After finding out that royalty was more important to Aurora s father than she was, she began to believe that there was no such thing as true love. In the film Maleficent, there is a lot of background added to the story, whereas in Disney s story Sleeping Beauty, there is virtually no background added to Maleficent s character, or her intentions. In Disney s story and in the live action film, the three good fairies were sent into the forest, disguised as peasant women, to raise Aurora until the day after her 16th birthday. Aurora was raised with no knowledge of where she came from, or that she was the princess of the land; she was now named Briar Rose, for the sake of keeping her safe, and a secret. In the film, Maleficent watches over Briar Rose and begins to interact with her and care about her, and love her. In both the film and the storybook, a prince comes across Briar Rose, and they are instantly attracted to each other. It is soon time for the princess to return to the castle, and her parents. In the book, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Odyssey And The Penelopiad By Margaret Atwood The Odyssey and The Penelopiad s storyline are both based off the same social context as Homer recorded the epic poem during Homeric society (when he was alive) however when the story was composed the literary context is completely different in comparison to Atwood, as Atwood wrote her novella The Penelopiad, in the 21 st century and homer recorded the epic poem during 8th C BCE. The difference between each time period meant there were societal differences which had different impacts on each of the stories literary context. The odysseyis a historical epic poem that was verbally told by bards around ancient Greece and recorded by homer in 8thC BCE, following the dark ages. During this time there was no real sense of freedom or self expression and people were not very opinionated. This was because during this time, Homeric society was overruled by patriarchal views and a hierarchy within their time, meaning some people were seen as much less than others. In contrast to Margaret Atwood where her fictional Novella the Penelopiad was crafted in 2005, during a modern society where freedom of speech was more or less accepted than in Homeric society. The Odyssey has a major influence on Margaret Atwood s novella the Penelopiad, as she based her opinions and perspective off the facts and historical content from the Odyssey. The Penelopiad s central theme consists of the double standards that occurred against the women within the Odyssey such as the maids and Penelope. Margaret ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. An Analysis Of Maurice Ravel s Le Tombeau De Couperin They say what s old is new again. There is nothing new under the sun. What goes around comes around. History repeats itself. These may be just a few banal sayings, but they might hold true for classical music as well. Maurice Ravel s Le Tombeau de Couperin is one such example. Written during the neo classical and neo baroque movements of the early 1900s, this clever piece ties together French musical traditions, baroque styles, and World War I in just six short pieces. This essay will detail the origins of the suiteform and the neo classical neo baroque movement, and compare Le Tombeau de Couperin with Bach s French Suite no. 5 in G Major, BWV 816. Le Tombeau de Couperin was written from 1914 1917 during World War I. Ravel served in World War I as a truck driver but was discharged in 1916 due to his frailness and poor health (Sebastian, 2010 2016. The war affected Ravel deeply, and it served as part of his inspiration for Le Tombeau de Couperin. Each of the six movements is dedicated to friends that Ravel lost in World War I, as listed in the Dover edition score: I. Prelude: to the memory of Lieutenant Jacques Charlot II. Fugue: to the memory of Secondary lieutenant Jean Cruppi. III. Forlane: to the memory of Lieutenant Gabriel Deluc. IV. Rigaudon: to the memory of Pierre and Pascal Gaudin V. • 7. Conflict Between Principles And Power In Captain America Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a movie attempting to understand the confusing and contradictory world that is modern America s political and social order. It is a movie that is based upon the modern era and yet somehow timeless. It is a movie that is firmly rooted in the Fantasy/ Sci Fi genre with super soldiers, flying aircraft carriers, and a bevy of comic book characters. It is also a movie which perfectly encapsulates the chaotic and bewildering nature of the war on terror and the surveillance state. Though it is a movie set entirely in the United Statesand primarily is focused on domestic policy, the primary conflict is one applying to foreign policy as well and this is the conflict between principles and power, between survival and ideals. Though the movie may initially seem to favor principles over power, upon a closer look the movie focuses a great deal on power and draws greatly on Realist theory for its worldview. The axis of the movie is the reveal to Captain America that S.H.I.E.L.D., the multinational defense organization he works for, is developing the technology to launch preemptive strikes. This disturbs the physical manifestation of American values and leads him to confront S.H.I.E.L.D s director Nicholas J. Fury. The ensuing argument perfectly encapsulates the conflict between principles and power in post 9 11 America. When it is pointed out he had done some morally questionable actions during WWII Captain America responds yeah we compromised. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Howard Gardner has written a book about a theory he called the Multiple Intelligences theory, in which Gardner states that people have one main intelligencefrom which they learn. There are eight different intelligences, according to Gardner, explaining how people learn best and the different strengths of learning they exhibit. Although Gardner s Multiple Intelligences theory has been around since the 1980s, it is still relevant and useful to those in all areas of the education process. Some people believe that Howard Gardner s theory is too broad and difficult to write a curriculum around. It has been proven, however, in certain instances, that the utilization of this theory raises students scores and their success rates. Those individuals who are in school to become educators are taught that, whatever expectations they have for the students, those levels will be met by the students. If the student has already failed in the teacher s mind, then the student will continue to fail. Students are very perceptive individuals and can tell what teachers feelings are toward them. This consequence is why future teachers are told to have high expectations for every student. Analysis Of Through A Window By Jane Goodall Connections within Jane Goodall s Through a Window Throughout the term, reading the book, Through a Window by Jane Goodall has been quite intriguing for me, in that it has inspired me with new ideas and perceptions about how our own species has evolved over time. I have really enjoyed seeing the many similarities that hominids share with other primate species, especially chimpanzees. Goodall s research only further proves that we are not only extremely biologically similar to chimpanzees in our DNA, but have many behavioral similarities as well. The film, Monkey in the Mirror also shows support for our likeness in intellectuality. These documented findings on chimpanzeeand human resemblances provides the strong evidence needed to conclude the fact that humans do indeed share a common ancestor with great apes. I found Goodall s chapter Mothers and Daughters very fascinating, and caught my interest the most because I immediately found myself making connections within my own life and experiences. Goodall compared the parenting styles of the two mothers, Flo, and Passion. These two chimps have completely opposite ways of raising their young, with Flo being very loving, nurturing, and caring of her daughter Fifi, while Passion was a very cold, harsh, and intolerant mother to her daughter, Pom. The mass production of things affected the skills of the workers because they were no longer doing multiple things in factories. The workers specialized in one part of the process because of the use of assembly lines. Therefore, they didn t have the skills that they would ve had if each person did everything or more than one things. Therefore, they got paid less as a result. The 19th century assembly line also kept the workers working at a fast pace. One worker set the pace for the rest so if one worker slowed down, the entire production was slowed down. This idea was expressed in the movie Metropolis. Also, although it was not a very enlightened concept, the workers were not seen as individuals, they were more of estranged workers and not really important to the factory. They were payed so little and could easily be replaced. Another example where there is no individualism is The Tiller Girls (formed in 1889 by John Tiller). They worked as a group and no individual woman had any special importance to the line, just as the workers in a factory. The Tiller Girls were seen as a mass ornament, which doesn t celebrate individualism. The economic changes made has to do with the the changes made to assembly lines and factories. • 29. The Effects Of Photography On The World War II Photography is meant to capture the moment at hand, a moment in history that cannot be duplicated, and in some aspects, attempt to physically hold a memory. However, not every memory is made for the best. Joe Rosenthal snapped this photo on February 23, 1945 during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. This picture, taken hurriedly in fear of missing the moment , depicts six soldiers: five Marines and one United StatesNavy Corpsman from the United States hoisting the American flag. These soldiers were standing on the corpses of many people that fought and died in the battle. Having been awarded the Pulitzer Prize, it became a symbol of the United States s power; however, the battle ironically was so minuscule in the span of World War II that it is not taught in most history classes. Americans have glorified the picture without acknowledging the deeper meaning of its history. The war resulted in casualties of over a million people, which was the largest amount of deaths recorded in human history. It destroyed numerous countries such as Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States. As depicted in the picture, the war resulted with the United States as superpower and created a sense of balance within the world. World War II was one of the most significant times in history. World War II had lasted six years in consequence of a continuing number of conflicts. Capital During The Late 1800s The ensuing conflict, between labor vs. capital, during the late 1800s initiated a struggle of power in the workforce between the rich industrialists (or corporate leaders) and the middle class/lower class workers. The Capitalists had intervened with the protests orchestrated by the workers, ensuring that the power remains with them. The strategies of the industrialists and the unique ways of protesting from the workers, contributes to spur a vigorous argument between the employers and their employees. The workers tried their best to ameliorate their working conditions by forming numerous unions, trying to fix currency (gold to paper) to economically help themselves, refusing to go to work, resorting to violence and non violence, etc. However, the Corporate leaders kept an upper hand and dissolved the workers ambitions by hiring scabs, creating a strong relationship with the military (Pullman strike), controlling and fixing policies at work, hiring immigrants for cheap labor, etc. Throughout the late 1800s, the corporate leaders have been able to successfully prevent workers who had resorted to: forming unions, protests (ex. Pullman strike and Homestead strike), violence (ex. Haymarket Sq. Riot), etc., from achieving a radical solution to the workers issues with the management by using several different strategies including but not limited to: hiring scabs /immigrants in the Homestead strike, using government support in the Pullman strike and keeping the power on their side ... • 33. The Cultural Expectations And Rules Norms A norm is something that is standard in society. Within sociology, it is specifically the cultural expectations and rules that a person within the culture is supposed to uphold. Norms tell an individual how they should behave within a certain situation. According to Saul McLeod of Simply Psychology (2008), people are expected to behave in a way that is not random. Norms are social standards that are agreed upon by a society so that members of a culture do not deviate into areas that others would consider abnormal and wrong. Also norms vary by culture, so one culture that has an agreed upon and socially practiced norm may vary from another culture that does not do the same thing and instead has different norms. Each culture s norms differ based on beliefs and customs. Norms are a general category of social rules. Taboos, laws, mores, and folkwaysare all norms. A taboo is something that a culture forbids. Laws are strictly enforced formal rules by the government or social powers within a culture. A more is a norm related to morals; what is deemed right or not within a particular society. Also folkways are customs that are socially accepted, but are not strictly enforced. Following norms are important because an individual is only socially accepted if they follow the set norms. The norm that I violated is a norm within American culture. It is a violation of a norm to clip your toenails when around a group of other individuals within this culture. This norm is ... They realized that the Board of Education wasn t doing proper testing for minority students. Madison Herley Professor Cooke General Psychology 101 April 21, 2016 Abstract The study will investigate the self reference effect with two different age groups. The two age groups will be young and older adults, trying to obtain material. The first group is told to relate that information to themselves or past experiences and, the second group is only told to review the material given. The purpose of this experiment is to see if the self reference effect is more beneficial to children rather than adults. To conduct this study, the observer has to use the naturalistic research stragesty and also see the within experimental designs. In order to have a positive income on the self reference effect. Throughout, my research I have found, like young adults, older adults exhibited superior recognition for self referenced items relative to the items encoded with the alternate orienting tasks, but self referencing did not restore their memory to the level of young adults (Gutchess, A. H., Kensinger, E. A., Yoon, C., Schacter, D. L. 1). Thus, from past research experiments the self reference effect has seen to be more limited in adults than children.
