This document discusses three main types of forests: coniferous/boreal forests, temperate forests, and tropical forests. Coniferous forests are found in northern regions and contain evergreen trees like spruce, fir, pine, birch and willow. Temperate forests were originally much larger but are now only 25% of their original size due to deforestation for human use and expansion. Tropical rainforests cover 6% of the earth's surface but this is decreasing from deforestation, as they are not always well-managed to allow wood to regrow at the rate it is harvested.
