Women in contemporary India face various problems that vary in form and intensity across different parts of the country. These problems include gender discrimination affecting women's nutrition, education, health, and career opportunities; high rates of violence including kidnapping, rape, and dowry deaths; unemployment and exploitation of women in the workplace; unequal access to education for girls; selective abortion and female infanticide; sexual harassment; the dowry system; child marriages; inadequate nutrition for girls compared to boys; low status of widows; unequal pay for equal work; and denial of property rights to women according to some family and religious traditions.
