Windows Movie Maker As A Language Learning Tool

Introduction The on-line multimedia resources allow teachers to easily integrate multimedia materials into the classroom.  However, these materials are often used in ways that leave ultimate control over content with the instructor, diminishing student agency in the process of learning
Video & Language Learning communicative approach in language learning "a process of developing the ability to do things with language as opposed to learning about language" (Nunan, 1988, p. 78) tasks should simulate the skills necessary for communicating outside the classroom
Video & Language Learning Socio constructivist approach to learning,  learning is a process of knowledge construction rather than a process of knowledge transmission  instruction is a process of scaffolding knowledge construction rather than of transmitting knowledge.  Learning tasks should be contextualised and purposeful for the learner  contextual learning demands meaningful real-world tasks
Research Questions How production of video documentaries  could enrich the learners’ learning experience  improve their English language proficiency
Respondents 70 first year Civil Engineering students Obtained Diploma from Polytechnics 22 – 24 year old
UMB Effective Communication - Learning Contents Meeting and Minutes of Meeting Letter Writing Interview Presentation
The Task Students are required to produce a 10-minute video documentary on a theme Social problems Culture Places of interest

The Results How production of video documentaries could enrich the learners’ learning experience  Learners are motivated Improved communication skills, interpersonal skills Improved critical thinking & problem solving skills Exposure to the real-life situations Able to produce original piece of work No more ‘cut & paste’ work
The Results How production of video documentaries could improve their English language proficiency.  Learners’ work is more cohesive Improve vocabulary Improve fluency
Conclusions The process of producing video documentaries allows the students to use the language in the real life situation as well as improve their communication and interpersonal skills.

  • 4. Introduction The on-line multimedia resources allow teachers to easily integrate multimedia materials into the classroom. However, these materials are often used in ways that leave ultimate control over content with the instructor, diminishing student agency in the process of learning
  • 5. Video & Language Learning communicative approach in language learning "a process of developing the ability to do things with language as opposed to learning about language" (Nunan, 1988, p. 78) tasks should simulate the skills necessary for communicating outside the classroom

Video & Language Learning Socio constructivist approach to learning, learning is a process of knowledge construction rather than a process of knowledge transmission instruction is a process of scaffolding knowledge construction rather than of transmitting knowledge. Learning tasks should be contextualised and purposeful for the learner contextual learning demands meaningful real-world tasks
