Ability for collaboration is an important skill in many modern professions. Students should master these skills to be able to participate in project work during study, as well as to work in different groups in the workplace (project groups and communities). An important issue in collaborative work is assessment of individual’s contribution. We will present methodology for qualitative evaluation of individual’s contribution in collaborative learning process supported by Wikis and Google Docs. Wikis provide an environment for collaborative writing and enable easy monitoring of students’ activities, such as frequency of editing and amount of published text. Google Docs is a Web-based application in which documents and spreadsheets can be created, edited and stored online. Google Docs could also be used in collaborative work in which multiple authors work together in real time. We will present collaborative learning activities based on editing of Wikis or Google Docs followed by collaborative and peer assessment. Peer assessment is learning activity where students consider and specify the level, value or quality of a product or performance of other people in similar situation, usually student within a given class. Peer assessment is an important activity in collaborative learning. Students will be divided into groups. Each group will consist of 3-4 students. Groups will select project topics regarding to the interest of the members from Videlectures.net or any other portal with scientific or educational video content. The assessment of collaborative work will be supported by Moodle workshop.

ABSTRACT
Design Thinking (DT) and Maker Education (ME) are pedagogies that aim to equip students with the necessary skills to thrive in the non-linear and constantly evolving contexts of the 21st century. These constructivist learning approaches nurture 21st-century skills through creative, making processes and can be combined as they both involve ideating, creating, and reflecting on experience. By introducing them in early childhood education, students can develop their creative, collaborative, and making skills. However, there are still few implementations of DT and ME in formal, elementary education.
In this paper, we investigate 1) the challenges of implementing a formal DT and ME educational program, the Design Futures curriculum, for students aged 8 to 12 and 2) its impact on these students’ collaborative and creative self-efficacy. We showcase the development of the program which is aimed to be able to be implemented in elementary education within different socio-cultural contexts. The design is guided by 1) the theory of constructive alignment which poses that effective constructivist teaching practices align their learning objectives with their learning activities and assessment procedures, 2) the curricular spiderweb which presents different aspects of education and their relations, and 3) the design thinking process. We present a lesson plan consisting of a sequence of nine lessons that bridges the gap between the educational context and the outside world by teaching students about a problem that society is currently facing. It takes the students through a process of 6 phases in which teams, through research, define a sub-problem that they try to solve by design. Moreover, the students learn about electronic circuits and use basic electronic components in the creation of a mock-up of their design. The teaching activities incorporate DT- and ME-related learning objectives, which get assessed through connected assessment activities that implement both teacher-led assessment and student self-assessment.
We report on preliminary results of a triangulated mixed-methods study in which the Design Futures curriculum gets tested in 20 schools distributed over 4 countries (Romania, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands). We combine data from pre-post test measures on the students’ self-efficacy related to their creative and collaborative skills, user experience surveys from the students’ and teachers’ perspectives, and post-intervention interviews with students and teachers. Quantitative results are evaluated through analysis of variance and measures of central tendency. The interview transcripts are analyzed through inductive thematic analysis. Other materials, such as worksheets, are used to complement the results. Outcomes of the different socio-cultural contexts are compared to find distinctive implementations, trends, difficulties, and reflections from the students’ and teachers’ perspectives.

Educational data mining and learning analytics have to date largely focused on specific research questions that provide insight into granular interactions. These insights have bee abstracted to include the development of predictive models, intelligent tutors, and adaptive learning. While there are several domains where holistic or systems models have provided additional explanatory power, work around learning has not created holistic models with the level of concreteness or richness required. The need for both granular and integrated high-level view of learning is further influenced by distributed, life long, multi-spaced learning that today defines education. Drawing on social and knowledge graph theory, we propose the development of a Personal Learning Graph (PLeG) - an open and learner-owned profile that addresses cognitive, affective, and related elements that reflect what a learner knows, is able to do, and processes through which she learns best. This talk will introduce PLeG, detail required technical infrastructure, and articulate how it would interact with established learning software.

INQUIRY INTO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A FLIPPED CLASSROOM PROJECT FOR TRAINING FUTU...Université de Sherbrooke
At the University of Sherbrooke, the training of future secondary school teachers involves a course in learning evaluation that has both theoretical and practical dimensions. In a professional program of this nature, the practical dimension is essentially achieved through a long-term process of internships; this further supports the idea that pedagogical courses in the classroom are, in comparison, mostly "theoretical." Although the course delivers crucial procedural knowledge to future teachers before their third internship, up to this point it focuses essentially on theory and on a few key practical exercises (to improve the students’ ability to design and use rubrics). This is a traditional pedagogical model that also has its downsides. As research around professional development shows that future teachers need spaces where they can experiment with the development of complex know-how, we believe that changing this more traditional approach is crucial to improving the development of evaluation competencies. Based on these observations, we came up with the idea of a flipped classroom project. In order to treat a project of this nature as a technological and pedagogical innovation in the context of an initial teacher training program in assessment, we based our pedagogical strategy on the SoTL (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) approach (Kreber, 2002). Work on the project was done using the TPaCK Model (Mishra & Koehler, 2006), which helped us share our respective expertise, and to the MISA instructional design model (Paquette, 2004), which enabled us to develop pedagogical resources and strategies adapted to the learning needs of students. The literature about flipped classrooms mostly presents the pedagogical issues which this approach seeks to address; it also describes problems that can arise in the context of flipped classrooms (Baranovic, 2013; Bishop & Verleger, 2013; Herreid & Schiller, 2013). These problems are primarily technological and are discussed both from the point of view of students (Enfield, 2013; Pavlovsk, 2013), and from that of the trainers who create multimedia ressources (Herreid & Schieller, 2013; Thiele, 2013). However, the issue of the training needs of trainers and instructional designers in terms of instructional design is never mentioned. To reinvest the research results in our teaching and enhance scientific understanding of this specific kind of pedagogical situation, we analyzed the ways students use technological resources and identified some contributions of the flipped classroom in the context of a large teacher training group; we also documented the learning processes of students in situations of self-learning and analyzed how knowledge transfer occurs in the classroom. As a result, this entire project became the starting point for a valuable joint professional development process which we want to share and discuss during our presentation.

In this paper, we investigate 1) the challenges of implementing a formal DT and ME educational program, the Design Futures curriculum, for students aged 8 to 12 and 2) its impact on these students’ collaborative and creative self-efficacy. We showcase the development of the program which is aimed to be able to be implemented in elementary education within different socio-cultural contexts. The design is guided by 1) the theory of constructive alignment which poses that effective constructivist teaching practices align their learning objectives with their learning activities and assessment procedures, 2) the curricular spiderweb which presents different aspects of education and their relations, and 3) the design thinking process. We present a lesson plan consisting of a sequence of nine lessons that bridges the gap between the educational context and the outside world by teaching students about a problem that society is currently facing. It takes the students through a process of 6 phases in which teams, through research, define a sub-problem that they try to solve by design. Moreover, the students learn about electronic circuits and use basic electronic components in the creation of a mock-up of their design. The teaching activities incorporate DT- and ME-related learning objectives, which get assessed through connected assessment activities that implement both teacher-led assessment and student self-assessment.
We report on preliminary results of a triangulated mixed-methods study in which the Design Futures curriculum gets tested in 20 schools distributed over 4 countries (Romania, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands). We combine data from pre-post test measures on the students’ self-efficacy related to their creative and collaborative skills, user experience surveys from the students’ and teachers’ perspectives, and post-intervention interviews with students and teachers. Quantitative results are evaluated through analysis of variance and measures of central tendency. The interview transcripts are analyzed through inductive thematic analysis. Other materials, such as worksheets, are used to complement the results. Outcomes of the different socio-cultural contexts are compared to find distinctive implementations, trends, difficulties, and reflections from the students’ and teachers’ perspectives.

Educational data mining and learning analytics have to date largely focused on specific research questions that provide insight into granular interactions. These insights have bee abstracted to include the development of predictive models, intelligent tutors, and adaptive learning. While there are several domains where holistic or systems models have provided additional explanatory power, work around learning has not created holistic models with the level of concreteness or richness required. The need for both granular and integrated high-level view of learning is further influenced by distributed, life long, multi-spaced learning that today defines education. Drawing on social and knowledge graph theory, we propose the development of a Personal Learning Graph (PLeG) - an open and learner-owned profile that addresses cognitive, affective, and related elements that reflect what a learner knows, is able to do, and processes through which she learns best. This talk will introduce PLeG, detail required technical infrastructure, and articulate how it would interact with established learning software.

At the University of Sherbrooke, the training of future secondary school teachers involves a course in learning evaluation that has both theoretical and practical dimensions. In a professional program of this nature, the practical dimension is essentially achieved through a long-term process of internships; this further supports the idea that pedagogical courses in the classroom are, in comparison, mostly "theoretical." Although the course delivers crucial procedural knowledge to future teachers before their third internship, up to this point it focuses essentially on theory and on a few key practical exercises (to improve the students’ ability to design and use rubrics). This is a traditional pedagogical model that also has its downsides. As research around professional development shows that future teachers need spaces where they can experiment with the development of complex know-how, we believe that changing this more traditional approach is crucial to improving the development of evaluation competencies. Based on these observations, we came up with the idea of a flipped classroom project. In order to treat a project of this nature as a technological and pedagogical innovation in the context of an initial teacher training program in assessment, we based our pedagogical strategy on the SoTL (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) approach (Kreber, 2002). Work on the project was done using the TPaCK Model (Mishra & Koehler, 2006), which helped us share our respective expertise, and to the MISA instructional design model (Paquette, 2004), which enabled us to develop pedagogical resources and strategies adapted to the learning needs of students. The literature about flipped classrooms mostly presents the pedagogical issues which this approach seeks to address; it also describes problems that can arise in the context of flipped classrooms (Baranovic, 2013; Bishop & Verleger, 2013; Herreid & Schiller, 2013). These problems are primarily technological and are discussed both from the point of view of students (Enfield, 2013; Pavlovsk, 2013), and from that of the trainers who create multimedia ressources (Herreid & Schieller, 2013; Thiele, 2013). However, the issue of the training needs of trainers and instructional designers in terms of instructional design is never mentioned. To reinvest the research results in our teaching and enhance scientific understanding of this specific kind of pedagogical situation, we analyzed the ways students use technological resources and identified some contributions of the flipped classroom in the context of a large teacher training group; we also documented the learning processes of students in situations of self-learning and analyzed how knowledge transfer occurs in the classroom. As a result, this entire project became the starting point for a valuable joint professional development process which we want to share and discuss during our presentation.

A definition for student collaboration in EAP: Implications for practice
Student collaborative assignments are becoming more common across Higher Education and also feature in a large number of EAP programmes. However, there is a significant gap between researcher and practitioner conceptions of the term (Bolster & Levrai, in press). At the BALEAP 2019 conference in Leeds, we attempted to close the gap and proposed a definition for a collaborative assignment in EAP, drawing on both research and practitioner perspectives; “A collaborative assignment is one where learners work together and make equitable contributions to develop an indivisible artefact for which they share responsibility and ownership. During the development of the artefact, learners may work synchronously or asynchronously, face-to-face or online, but there is interdependence between group members, drawing on all their strengths.” (Bolster & Levrai, 2019).
Having a clear definition of a term allows investigation into best practice and this talk goes on to discuss the implications for practice in terms of assignment design, delivery, and assessment. We will discuss the practicalities of designing and implementing a collaborative assignment. We will also look at how a practitioner can navigate what can be a problematic process and move from being a "guide on the side" (Rummel and Deiglmayr, 2018) to make the most of an innovative approach.

Students will describe the characteristics and traits of successful entrepreneurs, including their roles and responsibilities, and discuss the broader economic and social impacts of entrepreneurial activities on both local and global scales.
