The Widal test detects antibodies in patients suffering from enteric fever using stained Salmonella antigens. The test involves mixing patient serum with Salmonella antigens on a slide or in tubes. If the serum contains antibodies against the Salmonella antigens, agglutination or clumping will occur. A positive result indicates the presence of clinically significant levels of antibodies against Salmonella typhi or paratyphi in the patient's serum. The test is used to diagnose enteric fever after 15 days of fever.
