The Widal test is a serological test used to diagnose typhoid or enteric fever caused by Salmonella typhi, paratyphi A, B, and C. It detects antibodies produced against Salmonella antigens (O, H, Vi) in the patient's serum. The test involves mixing serum with Salmonella antigen suspensions and observing for agglutination. A positive result is visible agglutination within 1 minute. The Widal test is inexpensive and widely used but has limitations as it can give false negatives early in infection or after recovery and false positives with cross-reacting conditions or previous vaccination.
