Project organization and Management Structure: As the experimental methods are complementary to
each other, but are not critically interdependent, the cooperative design of my research plans will
greatly facilitate my ability to accomplish the specific aims. To monitor the progress and project
quality, I will conduct meetings with Prof. Battaglia on a bi weekly basis, write monthly reports that
can be incorporated into peer reviewed publications, and present my research outcomes at lab group

The Aeneid presents various themes throughout the course of Aeneas s journeys, but I noticed that
particularly in Books I and VI the theme of water is very prevalent and important. First we see when
Aeolus stirs up the storm, water causes so much destruction and it is completely out of Aeneas s
control. Then as he is crossing over to the underworld, Aeneas encounters Charon and the river of
Styx, where the whirlpool is murky, unknown, and dangerous. Overall, water is depicted as a
dangerous uncertainty in Aeneas s world. It is extremely powerful and has the potential to do so much
damage, however it can also be still and murky. Vergil uses imagery and descriptive diction to enhance
the theme of water as perilous and unknown throughout The Aeneid.

PLOT: A Lesson Before Dying tells the story of Jefferson, a twenty one year old benighted black
fielder wrongfully implicated and convicted of the robbery and murder of a white man. He was
sentenced to death by electrocution. At his trial, Jefferson s court selected defense attorney contends
that Jefferson lacks the acumen to plan a robbery, and that, even if he had been involved in the killing,
sentencing him to death would be like putting an inconsequential dead man in the electric chair. In
rancor of this so called defense, the all white jury finds Jefferson guilty. To compound the horror of his
situation, Jefferson internalizes the attorney s racist depiction of him as a dead man.
STRUCTURE/FORM: The structure of this novel starts off from the middle of Jefferson s trial. The
main character is analyzing what is happening during the trial. The sections in the book are describing
in a very detailed manner what is happening from the five months in which the trial started to how it
ends. It was all a phenomenon. Lastly the last few chapters are when the narrator is teaching the
lessons in more detail to send out the message to the reader why this book he wrote is so informational
in many ways.
POINT OF VEIW/PERSPECTIVE: Although the author uses first person narration readers are not
bounded to Grant s point of view. Gaines has said that using a narrator who reports events as others
reveal them is one of the narrative devices he uses to get inside his characters heads without resorting
to omniscient (third person) narration. Much of the response in the novel occurs on an emotional level
rather than an objective level. Although we hear Grant s voice, the novel is ultimately Jefferson s
story.
MAIN CHARACTER: Grant Wiggins and Jefferson are the novel s dual protagonists. Their individual

International relations theories are a set of ideas that explain how states work within global system of
alliances and shared interests. What separates a theory from an ideology is concrete evidence of
practice and deep reasoning that backs up the theory. The three major theories of international
relations are realism, liberalism, and constructivism. I believe Realism theory, which states that states
only act in their own interests and to increase their own power relative to other states most accurately
predicts the behavior of states. If we assume that states act primarily on the foundation of security for
their people, it is rational to assume international relation theories find greater application during
periods of war and revolutions, where rulers are more pressed to provide stability. In times like those,
