The Housing Crisis Of 2008
During the early 2000 s, the United States housing market experienced growth at an unprecedented
rate, leading to historical highs in home ownership. This surge in home buying was the result of
multiple illusory financial circumstances which reduced the apparent risk of both lending and
receiving loans. However, in 2007, when the upward trend in home values could no longer continue
and began to reverse itself, homeowners found themselves owing more than the value of their
properties, a trend which lent itself to increased defaults and foreclosures, further reducing the value
of homes in a vicious, self perpetuating cycle. The 2008 crash of the near $7 billion housing industry
dragged down the entire U.S. economy, and by extension, the global economy, with it, therefore
having a large part in triggering the global recession of 2008 2012.
Contributing Factors
The housing crisis of 2008 can trace its origins back to the stock market trends of the mid to late 90 s.
During a period of extended growth in the stock market, increased individual wealth among investors
led to generalized increases in spending, including in the housing market. With more disposable
income in the pockets of consumers, the demand for housing increased in the late 90 s. Due to the fact
that homes are large projects and their construction takes a large amount of time, the supply of homes
in the market is inelastic on the short term. Because of the fixed supply of homes, as per the law of
supply, which

Court Room And One Party
Lawyers are responsible to demand justice for those who have violated their legal rights or an act
against the law. A lawyer is an individual that is trained to be able to handle any various legal issues at
hand. Lawyers have many task such as protecting their clients life as well as belongings, defending a
client if legal action is taken towards them, and guiding their client in the right direction of legal
advice from the law. Our law is very complex, rather than asking someone to learn the law, as citizens
we just pay someone who knows them, studies them and has practiced them in various ways. When
thinking of lawyers many people only think about the big picture, two parties in a court room and one
party becomes victorious. Lawyers are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In many cases lawyers have said wrong meaning in the court for something that the client had not
even done, resulting in false accusation which could possibly put an innocent person away for nothing,
this is why it is essential that lawyers prepare the way that they do. As a lawyer it is your job to prove
adequate abilities towards your case and most of all your client. Seeking justice in the conclusion
should be the attorneys goal even if the client presumes to be guilty. As a student with a passion for
the study of law, I have no fear in being the first to say that justice is something we as people need to
keep fighting for. Without justice who knows how things would be, our world would be a complete
mess. Recognition of the good from the bad, as well as the just of our law, to the unjust. Becoming a
lawyer is no easy task, in fact it is considered one of the more difficult choices as a career path. With
law being so widely spread there are numerous approaches one may take in achieving the official goal
in sight, being said, most find that the approach taken is not always the final result. For example,
many attorneys that pursue becoming a prosecutor have a change of mind towards that study because
they learn to combat with it so well, ultimately switching sides to become a defense

Rhetorical Analysis Of Serving In Florida
Serving In Florida Rhetorical Analysis
As a social critic, Barbara Ehrenreich is able to provide opinions about societal issues. Regardless of
her opinion, the audiences she reaches out to, take her stand point on what she writes about. In the
excerpt of a chapter in her book, Nickel and Dimed , from her a research project she conducted,
Ehrenreich vividly describes her experience as a server at a restaurant in Florida. This chapter is
specifically for the upper middle and upper classes to show that minimum wage isn t enough for
someone to be living off of. Ehrenreich reaches out to this specific audience because they aren t able
to experience the harsh conditions the lower class comes across during their daily lives. Since the

Ehrenreich reminds her readers that the minimum paying job isn t enough to provide a decent house
for herself, instead she has been living in a trailer. She reiterates that not only working conditions of
the lower class are a factor to their poverty, but living conditions for the poor aren t as pleasant as they
are for the upper middle class. She follows with another restriction that rises after a coworker of hers
spends too much time at a bar. The employee turns out to be another woman who is, another trailer
home dweller and a mother of three . She provides these details because the environment that lower
class employees live in tends to drive them to getting drunk, or even into harmful habits for
themselves and the people they surround themselves with. Ehrenreich explains this specific example
because it presents how not only one employee is effected by a wrongdoing, but all of them are.
Ehrenreich next moves on to explain that one of her coworkers was desperate enough to break into
one of the storage rooms. This coworker just so happens to be her friend who lives with a number of
other Czech dishwashers. According to Ehrenreich, he also, cannot sleep until one of them goes off for
[their] shift, leaving a vacant bed . With these living conditions, her friend must have a hard time
getting what he needs to survive. Ehrenreich uses this example to exemplify the meaning of sharing
living quarters with so many other people where supplies are scarce. The only other option the lower
class employees have to provide for themselves is usually stealing, which her friend got caught

Analysis Of Jealous Extremaduran And Deceitful Marriage
The exemplary novels are timeless not only for the stories they tell, but also for the vivid ways in
which they depict society at the time when these stories were written. Through the analysis of
Cervantes s Jealous Extremaduran and Deceitful Marriage, one is able to see and dissect the many
jobs and roles played by people in society during the 16th and 17th centuries in Spain. In the story
entitled The Jealous Extremaduran, Cervantes exhibits the roles of a hidalgo turned indiano, poor
aristocrat, child of a merchant, and multiple slaves. In this story, a man named Felipe de Carrizales is
born into vast wealth and depicted as a Hidalgo, or a nobleman. He spends it all upon finite entities
and becomes stripped of all affluence. He then goes to the New World, becomes rich and returns to his
homeland of Spain as an indiano. He subsequently falls in love with a young and beautiful girl,
Leonora, and marries her. Leonora is a great representation of the aristocracy in Spain, because she is
born with a good family, but does not possess any sort of wealth. Many people in Spain at this time
had an aristocratic title, but only a select few held the wealth due to the practice of mayorazgo. Those
like Leonora in society at that time were known as segundónes. While Carrizales is married to her, he
has such a fear of her being unfaithful to him, that he builds a house analogous to a prison to hold her.

The Executive Of Directors ( The Collective ) As A Self...
This paper will be a literature review that discusses the notion that, the board of directors (the
collective) as a self regulating social system. This will be achieved by a systematic review of a
collection of works in the area of corporate governance spanning the birth of the industrial revolution
to the modern day. The areas of emphasis will be a view to identifying the key concepts, issues and
laws created to better focus the actions of boards. In addition to identifying the locations for each of
these developments and how this has led to divergent practices across the globe. Following the review
of the literature the author of this paper will seek to discern the current direction and nature of
corporate governance in the future. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As such, for the first time the owners of companies were not directly involved in the day to day
operation of the entities. This resulted in the formation boards of directors charged with overseeing
and charting the direction of these entities. This is now referred to as shareholder capitalism (Grant,
2012), where a firm is to act in the best interests of its shareholders.
This separation of the owners and managers of the business is the central reason for the existence of
what is now referred to as corporate governance. As discussed by Smith (Smith, 1776), Berle (Berle,
1932) and Tricker (Tricker, 2012), this created several differing schools of thought. Concepts now
referred to as agency, stewardship, resource dependence and enlightened stakeholder theories
combined with ideas such as managerial and class hegemony and evolving social stakeholder
philosophies will form the basis of our review into the abilities of boards to act in a self regulating
manner. This paper will explore each of these in an attempt to discern if a pattern either has or is likely
to emerge that enables boards to form a self regulating social system.
Agency theory as a concept was first posed by the economist Adam Smith (Smith, 1776). He
discussed the idea of how those charged with the custodial duty of leading entities they did not own,

Information Retrieval During The 1950s
Chapter 1
1.1 Introduction
Information Retrieval
Information retrieval can be used in a broad term to mean physically bringing out what we have stored
or kept earlier in order to use the information on it. For example, we have retrieved information when
we retrieve our international passports from our pockets in order to copy the number on it into a form.
It can also be described as the act of getting information, relevant to a need
As an academic field of study however, it can be defined as ... finding material...of an unstructured
nature...that satisfies an information need from within large collections... (C. Manning et al, 2008).
This kind of information retrieval, used to be limited to a few people or professional searchers, as
access to computers was limited at that time while the internet was not yet available. This however is
no longer the case in the developed world as most people retrieve information by themselves when
they search the web. The earliest form of computerised information retrieval began in the 1940s due to
an increase in the production of scientific literature and availability of computers. This however was
based on author, title and key words, rather than full text searches which came later. (Cleverdon, C.W.
ACM press (1991).According to Mark Sanderson and W. Bruce Croft the capability of retrieval
system grew as technology developed and processor speed and storage capacity increased. As the
development of these systems led to movement away from manual

International Aid Or Development Assistance Essay
International aid or development assistance is defined in several ways. The Organization for Economic
Co operation and Development (OECD) defines international aid to include grants and loans to
developing countries and territories which are: (i) with the promotion of economic development and
welfare in the recipient country as the main objective and (ii) at concessional financial terms (i.e.
conveys a grant element of at least 25 percent). This definition is commonly accepted, however; some
analysts include loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as well as the World Bank
(concessional or not) in their definitions. The history of international development aid can be tracked
down to antiquity, however, the modern era saw international development aid begin to evolve in the
19th and early 20th century (Kapur, 2003) but the true expansion of international development aid was
in the aftermath of the Second World War. The most significant events in accordance with the
establishment of international development aid were the creation of The United Nations, The Marshall
Plan, and The Bretton Woods conference that established the World Bank and the IMF. The modern
manifestation of international development aid is extremely widespread. There are countless
international organizations and governments present which all contribute to international development
aid as it is a moral responsibility, however, what is the effectiveness of the aid they provide? This
paper argues

White Wolf Mountain Research Paper
White Wolf Mountain is a place of mystery. The Mountain is a majestic monolith, rising above all
others and overlooking the valley it created. It harbors a Power older than any living thing on Earth.
The Power has grown over centuries, millennia, eons never having been created, but having always
existed. Nobody knows how it came to be, but they do know this: the Power is changing, evolving all
the time. It sees all but it does not know all. The Power likes to learn. It likes to test its subjects and
watch the outcome. The Power is a sentient being. Though it has no physical form and is confined to
the Mountain, its influence extends far beyond its home of rock.
The Power started taking an interest in the animals that evolved around it when the Earth was young.
Only when the mammals started to come, and the Mountain grew in size with the shifting plates below
did the Power have enough energy to begin to act on its whims. The first animal to come under the
Power s influence was the wolf. A primitive creature, yet complex nonetheless. The wolf hunted and
scavenged, were social creatures, communicating through howls and yips and body language and the
Power was fascinated by this. The Power wanted to understand this, and when it had amassed enough
energy, it created its own wolf. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

processional and an ominous sounding melodic quality. The orchestration is beautifully conceived and
the percussion writing is ideally suited for younger musicians. The piece begins in the percussion very
quietly. All three players should be in equal balance. It is crucial that the timpani be tuned precisely as
indicated. The main idea of the piece, first appearing at measure 12, dominates this section. Careful
attention to balance and intonation should be given to the low brass stating the idea. The call motif is
developed canonically at the tritone, first as a two part canon in tutti, then as a four part canon by
soloists. The soloists should be of equal balance. The legato theme is developed through several keys,
and the entire section builds gradually from piano to fortissimo. The main idea is recalled at measures

Martin Luther King Jr. Essay
Martin Luther King, Jr. was perhaps one of the most influential person of our time. As the father of
modern civil rights movement, Dr.Martin Luther king, Jr., is recognized around the world as a symbol
of freedom and peace. Born January 15, 1929, King was the son of an Atlanta pastor. King
accomplished many achievements during his life. He graduated from Morehouse as a minister in 1948
and went on to Crozer Theological seminary in Chester, Pa., where he earned a divinity degree. After
that King went on to earn a doctorate in theology from Boston University in 1955. King also achieved
the Nobel Peace Prize in December of 1964. He was assassinated on April 4,1968, outside his motel

The following line proves my statement, quot;To accept passively an unjust system is to cooperate
with that system; thereby the oppressed become as evil as the oppressor. quot;
The second form that Dr. King talks about is hatred and violence. This is another method that he
disagrees with. King explains how violence only creates temporary results and creates more
complicated problems in the future. As a minister and deep believer in peace, King refused to accept
this way. He also believed that this form will only bring injustice to future generations. He explained
how violence today will bring chaos tomorrow. An excellent statement made by Dr. King to disprove
this method is, quot; The old law of an eye for an eye leaves everybody blind quot;.
The third, and final, way that Marther Luther King Jr., talked about was nonviolent resistance. This
form of dealing with oppression was strongly supported by King. He believed that the oppressed must
consider the benefits of both methods, acquiescence and aggressiveness. A line that best describes my
statement is quot;...the principle of nonviolent resistance seeks to reconcile the truths of two opposites
the acquiescence and violence while avoiding the extremes and immoralities of both. quot; King
believed that this was the best method and in order for it to be successful the Negros quot;must work
passionately and unrelentingly quot;.

the Xinjiang territory, Chechnya, and the province of Quebec. These problems have been taking place

Examples Of Groupthink Essay
Introduction
For the purpose of this essay I will define what groupthink is. I will describe some important
symptoms of Groupthink with the aid of examples in business and will recommend some remedies for
of Group Think that a manager can decide to do in their organisation.
What is Groupthink?
Groupthink is a phenomenon that happens in an organisation because often required to work in groups
or teams. Almost all organisations work within groups on certain projects to reach a decision on ideas
and plans. Groupthink requires the group to conform to the same beliefs and requires cohesiveness at
all times. Groupthink occurs when a group makes faulty decisions because group pressure lead to a
deterioration of mental efficiency, reality testing and moral judgement (Irving Janis).
Example: If the group was doing a project and they were finished and then a printer is broken and
must find an alternative to the situation in question.
There are 8 symptoms of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Illusion of unanimity
An example of this symptom would be Aras Attracta in Swinford where they thought they were doing
a good job when carrying out their duties on a daily basis however no one expressed an opinion what
was going on. They all did wrong and as a result Groupthink had horrendous circumstances. Nobody
questioned the carer as she victimised the patients. It is a good example in my opinion of groupthink
in recent times.
5. Direct pressure on dissenters
Members are under pressure not to express arguments against any of the group s views.
Example: When the company are deciding between two potential clients and the majority picks one
and the others need to bite their tongue. If they had said something they would say to them if you are
not with us you are against us.
b) What can a manager do about it?
There are a number of remedies I will list 5 of them and use examples of them.
1. Assign more than one person to attend a meeting in the organisation so they can test how they do
their work

starts to appear, these include; fever, loss of appetite, headache and tiredness, but once the disease
actually appears, it turns into very itchy fluid filled blisters that ultimately turn into dry scabs. The first
spots that the rash may appear is the face and the back, then it quickly spreads to the rest of the body
affecting even genital areas, and inside of the mouth. They are key symptoms that doctors look for to
diagnose chickenpox, many professionals perform a blood test that checks if a person is producing
antibodies to the virus, this to determine whether or not an individual is already immune to it

to make a clear diagnosis (fever followed by an itchy rash). Still, Chickenpox can be confused with
conditions that affect the skin like scabies or even insect bites, this is why it is crucial to seek
professional help when a person suspects he or she has contracted the varicella zoster virus.

Effective Use Of Sound In Fritz Lang s M
Sound was first introduced into film in 1927. Several years later, Fritz Lang s, M, was released. His
film took advantage of this new technology by implementing a complex soundtrack, using this to help
drive the story instead of solely relying on the pictures. Further, Lang also introduced a technique
termed as leitmotif which in short is simply a recurring musical theme associated with something
larger. Meanwhile, in 1960, the Jean Luc Godard s French New Wave film, Breathless, was released.
This film also cleverly utilized the used of sound by often abruptly switching from a beautiful music
score to natural noise from the streets of Paris. In M, there is a scene where the audience is introduced
to Hans Becker on the streets of Paris. In terms of sound effects, the viewers are first aware of the cars
honking and other noise reminiscent of the hustle and bustle of city life. However, when the camera
cuts to a different perspective of Hans, the audio also cuts off and is juxtaposed by almost complete

Poverty And Homelessness
Poverty and homelessness are very serious problems in the United States. In January of 2013 the count
of people identified as homeless was larger than 600,000 (Segal, Gerdes, Sue, 2016). Many factors go
into what makes this population so large, however this paper will focus on how much race plays a role
in homelessness and poverty.
Systems (Ecological) Theory Systems theory is a perspective that places emphasis on understanding
how people fit into their environments (Segal, Gerdes, Sue, 2016). In systems theory if a specific
person, let s call them Greg, has one system that s not functioning properly, then the rest of their
systems will most likely not work as well (Segal, Gerdes, Sue, 2016). Greg is homeless, and his

White homeless women had higher rates of hospitalization than homeless women of color (Jones,
2016). When talking about poverty, which is very obviously related to homelessness, people of color
are far more likely to be in poverty than white people. In 2012 the median income for households of
people of color, $33,321 for black households, and $39,005 for latinx households, was much lower
than white households, $57,009 (Segal, Gerdes, Sue, 2016). This means that households of color
earned less than two thirds less than white households (Segal, Gerdes, Sue, 2016). If people of color
are making less than white people, and face discrimination in employment as well as housing, then it s
obvious why they are more likely to be in poverty and experience homelessness. To combat the
discrimination that homeless people face, social workers often must push for a change in a way that
will allow for one of their main systems, security, to be stable. One example of how this is done is by
doing something that s called rapid re housing. Rapid re housing is the process of immediately
removing families out of homelessness and into permanent housing by aiding in deposits, rent, and
utilities (Homelessness, 2015). Before rapid re housing they would place people in run down homes
for at maximum of two years. Not only does rapid re housing cost less, but it has an 85% outcome of
households being stably housed after the assistance ends (Johnston Kunkel, 2014).

Is Victor A Hero In Frankenstein
What does it mean to be a hero? The definition of a hero from the dictionary is a person noted for
courageous acts or nobility of character. However, this definition does not cover all of what it means
to be a hero is; for instance, a hero needs to also be educated, compassionate, and have other personal
and physical traits. Victor, from the novel Frankenstein, is the hero in the novel. On the other hand,
Victor doesn t meet all of the criteria of being a hero, but he is a better choice than the other characters
in the book. To summarize, being a hero means more than what it is portrayed as in its definition, and
Victor is a hero, but does not have all of the traits that most heroes do. There are many traits that
contribute to being a hero. For instance, a hero needs to be courageous, fearless, daring, brave,

hero needs. For example, he is not fearless because he is scared of his creation, and he is not brave
because he ran away from his creation. Additionally, he doesn t seem to have compassion; especially
for his creation. Furthermore, Victor doesn t follow the definition of a hero exactly because he is not
admired or idealized for his achievements. On the other hand, he is a better hero than the creature. The
creature doesn t have all of the traits that Victor has except for compassion, but the creature doesn t
have any of the heroic traits that Victor does have. Overall, Victor does not have all the traits of being

like August when he came into Beecher Prep. Julian writes horrible notes and puts them in August s
locker and mimicked his friends. He also got almost the whole school to turn on August just because

Andy disrupts because of Rob s death. Andy s dad gets a phone call from the teacher that Andy is
acting different and that it might be because of Rob s death. The text states, For instance, last weak he

very disruptive in school. He is being disruptive because everything going on in his life like the
accident. Similarly, Julian disrupts at the scene when August s sister s boyfriend takes Jack home and
Jack stops into the store. The text states, they hide behind the fruit stand in front of the store, and when
jack walks out, they trail behind him, making loud throw up noises (Palacio, 197). This piece of text
evidence is showing how Julians goal is to disrupt Jack. Julian feels like if he hurts August s friends he

Analysis Of The Book Gladwell
Maddy Rigby
Smith
AP English III
30 November 2014
In his previous book, Malcolm Gladwell coined the phrase tipping point , meaning the moment when
an idea or concept suddenly becomes popular within the general populace, and in his following book,
he gives us the term Outliers which means something that lies outside of the normal or the expected.
In his book Blink, Gladwell provides us with two more phrases; thin slicing and blink. To blink is to
act without thinking, working on split second decisions to make choices. Thin slicing is using the
small amount of information that is known to come to a conclusion without further searching for more
information. According to Gladwell, snap judgements often provide better decisions than well
informed, over analysed ones, which is ironic in our generation of information overload. The book, in
the way that Gladwell s books tend to do, opens with an anecdote, this one opening much like a
detective novel, talking extensively about the discovery of a statue and about the group of analysers
that were initially fooled by it, coming to believe that it had shown to be genuine after much study.
After their extensive studying, they were sure in their deduction, but another group came into the
picture soon after and looked at it or blinked and declared it a fake and a forgery and ended up being
right. Gladwell provides a series of questions following his anecdote is overanalyzing incorrect? Does
blinking always provide the correct

Interior Dorm Design Company For Dorms
A. KC Design is an interior dorm design company for dorms. Our interior designing is the art or
process of designing, often including the arranging, of the dorm room, and labor buying the
decorations. As an interior designer as myself, is someone who directs and takes control in such
projects. Interior dorm designing is a multifaceted skilled profession that includes development,
creativity, thinking, and communicating with the owners of the project and the management and
execution of the design. What I do is a process of shaping the experience of an interior space that
reflects the owner s personality. It all started when everyone complimented me on my dorm room and
asked me to do there s. Then and there is when KC Design was born. B. We are unique in a lot of
ways, there is no other like us. Other interior dorm design businesses are all online or in an app. So
our market structure is considered to be a monolithic competition. Which is a type of market structure
in which many other businesses sell products that are similar to us but not identical. There are no dorm
design businesses that will knock on your dorm nor move furniture themselves. My business is an
intangible service. In the near future I would like KC Design to be worldwide in every college
campus. Which means I would have to have lots of universal employees nationwide. Our availability
of substitutes can be those whom wish to design their own rooms themselves or choose not to do
business with us KC Design.

Racial Inequality In Caged Bird And Nothing s Changed
How do Angelou and Afrika vividly explore the impact of racial inequality in Caged Bird and Nothing

Both Angelou and Afrika contrast the situation of an African American and a white person, conveying
the emotions caused by racial discrimination, segregation, to well as making the reader empathize and
understand an African American in the setting of their poems in hopes of spreading their message
across, as both poets express that the whites in power usually don t care, nor are they able to

Refugee Reflection
The refugee exhibit in Pioneer Square was set up into different sections where each section told a
story of the struggles, and reasons behind a refugees, migrants, asylum seekers, perspective of why
they need to leave their home countries. In the beginning you are given a card, which holds an identity
of an asylum seeker, migrant, international displaced people, refugee, and you are to become that
person. We were then told to select five items that we thought were beneficial for our journey. In my
experience I was an asylum seeker from Afghan. The five things I selected were a cell phone to
contact family when I crossed the border and tell them I m fine. The next item was money for
expenses, an animal, passport to have identification, and lastly water so I stayed hydrated. I thought it
was easy enough until the tour guide explained the circumstances. When refugees start their journee to
leave their homeland they don t think about valuables, but the necessities of what they will need for
the long journey before them. I learned that each trip you take you lose a valuable, you have to give up
(exchange) something in order to attain something new such as, a boat ride, food, a charger to charge
your phone, which as I learned was what most refugee desired to keep communications between
family. I learned people in different countries they reached would charge them to charge their phone,
or had to receive something in return. I learned that it caused conflict and it was later

Leadership Theory And Organizational Culture
Abstract
The role of leadership has evolved over the years. Early leadership theories focused on the
characteristics of the leader and have shifted to focus on the leader s behavior, skills and style.
Emerging leadership theories continued to shift focus to team leadership and subordinate motivation.
Organizational culture is exists in all organizations and influences the work environment. Researchers
have studied leadership and organizational culture individually; however there have been less focus on
gaining an understanding of the relationship leadership and organizational culture.
In this paper, I will explore various leadership theories and relationship with organization culture. I
will also reflect on the type of leadership style that promotes a positive organizational culture.
Introduction
Leaders set the tone for the organization while Organizational culture sets the values that influence the
work environment. There needs to be some clarity on whether leadership influences organizational
culture or does organizational culture influence leadership. In order to understand the relationship
between leadership and organizational culture, we must first define them.
Leadership defined
Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common
goal. (Northouse, 2013). Leadership involves establishing clear visions, communicating the vision to
followers, and developing strategies to achieve those goals. Leaders are

Abortion Is A Medical Method

Abortions
The word, abortion has currently flooded every single corner of the social media and hence, it is no
surprise that we are seeing this word everywhere. Abortion is a medical method used to end a
pregnancy and terminate the fetus that has formed in a female s uterus. According to an Internet
dictionary called Merriam Webster, the definition of abortion is the termination of a pregnancy that
results in the death of the embryo or fetus as a spontaneous expulsion of a human fetus during the first
12 weeks of gestation.
Abortion has been and probably one of the most controversial topics that is being discussed or
squabbled around the world. There are two groups of people who have ... Show more content on

Before delving deeper into the history and current debates over abortions, it is important to look at the
fact of its existence in the United States. According to studies released in 2005 by the Physicians for
Reproductive Choice and Health (PRCH) and The Guttmacher Institute, there were 1.29 million
abortions performed in this country. Research by the same group shows that in 1994, approximately
half of all pregnancies in the United States were unintended, with only about half of those actually
ending in abortion. In comparison to other countries, the U.S. accounted for three percent of
worldwide abortions in 1995 (PRCH and Guttmacher). As we can see from these statistics, the number
of abortions has been significantly increased. Millions of unborn babies are terminated out of their
choice because of abortion. This is not a good way of resolving the unwanted or unexpected
pregnancy and method should be practiced in reducing the number of abortions. In order to know
more about abortion, a historical explanation on this topic is necessary. There are different reasons
abortions are being performed and knowing them is one of the best ways to get a deeper insight
towards the entire background of the abortions. Abortion is a method that has been used by the people
for more than thousands of years. However, due to the over numbered of abortions we have in the
United States,

Reality Television Program
When people turn on their televisions at home or they are watching television somewhere else, they
will possibly find a reality show somewhere. Reality television shows have been on television for
numerous years and are changing. Although reality television is wildly entertaining and popular, many
young teens and adults look up to their favorite reality show actors and their lavish lifestyles and
overdramatic antics. People who watch reality television regularly have different expectations and
views on how the world actually works and feel differently about themselves. People follow their

Reality television only shows what viewers want to see and is dishonest and distorts the truth about
reality. After years celebrity Kate Gosselin has been attacked for everything she did and does. People
magazine says When the show melted down along with the Gosselin marriage after Jon was caught
partying with other women, the twins 10 years old at the time were old enough to grasp that their
world had been shattered (Coyne 58). This statement shows that reality television brings fighting and
divorce to families in reality television. Reality television shows unreal situations and make people
start to fight and change. A study found that people who watched reality television of the surveillance
docu drama variety (as opposed to competition shows) were more likely to believe that relationship
drama is normal and to overestimate the amount of bad behavior such as gossiping that women engage
in (O mara 2).When reality television shows problems, those problems start to happen in our society
because people see it on television and want to be like reality stars.
Reality television gives off social behaviors to the world. It gives a bad influence to children who use
actors as their role models. Reality star actors will do anything for popularity, publicity, and fame.

World War I ( 1914-1918 )
World War I (1914 1918) was the first war to involve almost all of Europe; Austria Hungary, France,
Germany, Great Britain, Italy, and Russia all participated. The war wiped out a significant amount of
the young generation and changed politics, economics and public opinion in Europe for decades to
come. While many countries had a role in the war s outbreak, Germany probably bore the greatest
responsibility due to three factors. The Germans had pushed for war since the founding of the modern
German state. Germany had poor relationships with many of the countries that surrounded them.
Finally, Kaiser Wilhelm II, the head of Germany, and his government made numerous diplomatic
errors in months that led up to the outbreak of the war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
German militarism and German nationalism led to a strong desire for war. German people wanted a
large and strong army, and they not only respected their soldiers; they worshipped them. They
believed in the importance of being and appearing strong. Barbara Tuchman in her book, The Guns of
August, notes that unlike President Theodore Roosevelt, who believed that a person should speak
softly and carry a big stick , the Germans believed that a person should speak loudly and brandish a
big gun. This motto indicated the German belief in not only being strong, but also looking strong. The
Germans also believed that war was ennobling. As the German writer Thomas Mann wrote, [War is] a
purification, a liberation, an enormous hope. The victory of Germany will be a victory of soul over
numbers. German officials believed that an effective way to impress Europe was through threats and a
show of power. They wanted to win a war and humble Russia; crush Great Britain and deprive the
British of their navy, India, and Egypt; to make France pay indemnity; force Belgium to yield its
seacoast; and punish Japan.
The German people had deep nationalistic views about their country. They believed that Germany was
the top country and that all other countries should recognize it. The Germans felt as though they were
the most educated and progressive people and as such they would enlighten the world. Many

Art of War Summary
Art of War is a famous Chinese military strategy book written by Sun Tzu, an ancient Chinese military
general. He was famous during his time and for his work entitled Art of War, which made him known
even up to our century. According to Wallace (2010), Sun Tzu is the author of one of the most
prominent pieces of literature during the era of the Warring States in which China entered around the
first millennium B.C.E. In this work of art Sun Tzu takes a rational approach to the problem of
conflict and dissects every aspect of it. Sun Tzu is undeniably an historical figure. The book is all
about how to win a war by employing strategies and tactics given the information and ideas that every
general must know from laying plans, handling his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sun Tzu said that the art of war recognizes Nine situations and these are elaborated in the eleventh
chapter. These are: dispersive ground; facile ground; contentious ground; open ground; ground of
intersecting highways; serious ground; difficult ground; hemmed in ground; desperate ground.
Translators say that these nine situations can be generally grouped into early, middle, and late stage
conditions, and they range from scattering to deadly. In each of these situations, there is one and only
one appropriate response. As the title says, Attacking by fire this chapter is basically lays down the
five different ways to attack the enemy using fire. First, burn the soldiers in their camp. Second, burn
their stores. Third, burn their equipment. Fourth, burn their weapons. Lastly, burn their supplies. The
ways mentioned have been widely used by many battles. The last chapter focuses on the importance of
gathering information from reliable sources and managing them. It specifically discusses the value and
methods of developing good information sources. It describes five kinds of spies: local spies, inside
spies, reverse spies, dead spies, and living spies. Reliable information can help mold your own

Genetically Foods Should Be Approved For Human Consumption
Genetically engineered foods are defined as foods that have had genes from other animals or plants
(hereby referred to as foreign genes) added onto their genetic codes. The genetic engineering
technique can be employed on animals, plants, or on such microorganisms as bacteria (NIH). The
question of whether foods derived from such organisms should be approved for human consumption is
what has raised widespread controversy among many circles. There are those who view GM foods as
the ultimate solution to major challenges of the 21st century while others see them as a threat to
human health and the environment. Notably, the global society is facing major challenges key among
them being food insecurity and environmental issues such as global warming and climate change.
Genetically engineered foods present a potential solution to these challenges. This paper will argue
that with adequate research and regulation, genetically engineered foods should be approved owing to
the benefits they present in terms of increased food production and quality, as well as eliminating the
need to compromise the environment in the pursuit of more cultivation land and higher crop yield. In
my view, we certainly need genetically engineered foods to fight food insecurity that characterizes the
global society. A look at related statistics denotes a population that is facing serious food security
challenges. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), an estimated 795 million

Business Ethics And Practices Of Goldman Sachs
Assignment 1
Q1 What was up with Wall Street? The Goldman Standard and Shades of Gray.
Go back through the case; make a list of each action/ practice that could be called a gray area.
The problems to be investigated are the business ethics and practices of Goldman Sachs. There were
several grey areas in which Goldman Sachs operated their business.
Ethical Grey areas are situations and problems that don t fit neatly into any existing mode of ethical
analysis within the business (Marshall, 2007). Peter Drucker s interpretation of business ethics is that
personal ethics and business ethics cannot be separated. He uses the example of businessmen should
not cheat, steal, lie, bribe, or take bribes. But nor should anyone else. He also mentioned that men and
women don t acquire exemption from ordinary rules of personal behavior because of their work or job
(Drucker, 1986).
The first grey area was Goldman Sachs using a technique called layering . Goldman would start a
company and used their own money to buy 90% of the shares. The public would see how the stocks
were selling so quickly and wanted a piece of the pie. The public were unaware that Goldman was
buying their own stocks and then continuously increasing the price of the stock and selling it back at
the higher price. Goldman saw how well this was working and decided to continue with this practice.
He started new companies and followed the same formula as before, making bags of money, while
investors had no idea

The Cult of Contemporary Celebrity Essay
Celebrity: (noun) 1. A well known person. 2. Fame, being famous.
No doubt every simian tribe of hunter gatherers had their local celebrities: the woman who gave birth
to quintuplets, the boy who swallowed a porcupine and survived, the man who wrestled with a
tyrannosaurus and... well, he probably would have died, but celebrity status would have been applied
posthumously.
If, however, the man wrestling with a Tyrannosaurus was a modern Hollywood celebrity, not only
would he have lived, he would have pocketed something like $20 million for his efforts, and earned
the adulation of several billion people.
The global celebration of modern celebrity is partly a product of our pre historic need for heroes. In a

Information on celebrities is not only very popular with the general public, it also popular with
journalists. Interviewing a movie star requires almost no effort. The celebrity s publicist will provide
you with every significant and insignificant detail of the celebrity s life. All you have to do is read this
information, interview the subject, cut and paste what the celebrity says so the interview has a
coherent structure, and `bang, there is your thousand or two thousand word article.
Because of this modern media frenzy there are as many divisions of Hollywood celebrity as there are
bird species in the Amazon. As the dim witted, obtuse and lethargic stars of Big Brother proved last
summer you don t need any skills to become a celebrity these days, you just need to be in the media.
In Hollywood there are A list commercial celebrities like Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts.
There are your B list celebrities like Ben Affleck, Kevin Kline and Uma Thurman (they might not

Skeletal Muscle Contraction And Relaxation Is Vital For
Skeletal muscle contraction and relaxation is vital for voluntary body movements to occur. Skeletal
muscles contract when myofibrils composed of actin and myosin slide past each other, which
contracts the muscle by altering its length. The gastrocnemius muscle in Rana pipiens, which is
attached to the sciatic nerve, can be stimulated to find threshold and maximal stimulus voltage. Once
threshold is reached, contraction amplitude increases with stimulus voltage until the maximal voltage
is reached, at which point it levels off. Altering the interstimulus interval can induce twitch summation
in the gastrocnemius, leading to one combined contraction with a high amplitude. Increased stimulus
frequency can be used to induce a tetanic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Twitches are the resulting contraction from the firing of an AP in muscles. Twitches are much longer
than the APs themselves. Twitch recruitment uses external stimuli to determine the threshold and
maximal voltages of nerves and muscles. Stimuli below the threshold voltage, or the minimum
stimulus strength required to elicit an action potential, will not cause a muscle to twitch. Once
threshold potential is determined, increased stimulus voltage will increase the contraction amplitude of
the twitch until the maximal stimulus is reached. The twitch will not significantly increase in strength
for any voltage above maximal. This is because at maximal stimulus voltage all motor units have
already been recruited to contract. The gastrocnemius muscle has a far higher threshold and maximal
voltage that the sciatic nerve due to its size and the number of motor units present in the
gastrocnemius. Along with increasing stimulus voltage, contraction amplitude can also be increased
through twitch summation. Twitch summation occurs when a muscle is stimulated twice in quick
succession, so that the second twitch occurs before the first twitch has relaxed. The twitches then
combine to form a stronger muscle contraction. This process is made possible by the temporal
relationship between a muscle s AP and the resulting twitch, which is far longer in duration than the 1
ms AP that causes it. Due to the nature of skeletal muscle contraction, the length tension relationship

An Analysis Of Hemingway s Hills Like White Elephants...
In Hemingway s Hills Like White Elephants I found many layers of symbolism, and a fascinating
psychological underplay afoot between his two characters. It begins with the girl s comment about a
line of white hills seen in the distance, which she compares to white elephants. The man responds with
the comment I ve never seen one.
The symbolism of a white elephant is widely known as something very large or apparent that no one
wishes to acknowledge or speak of in American society. It is an interesting opening to a very strained
conversation concerning an apparent pregnancy, and the man s wish to terminate it. The couple s
careful avoidance of actually naming the problem, or the proposed solution, suggests the situation in
which a mate, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As an interesting note, the name wormwood derives from the German word Wermut, which translates
as grievous in the English language.
The man s response to her bitterness is one of irritation and he snaps at her, whereupon she promptly
blames him for his lack of appreciation for her clever metaphor about the white hills; referring , most
likely, to his distracted attitude. It seems likely she is accustomed to him complimenting her for her
intelligence and wit, which is now not happening due to his worry over her pregnancy. He again
placates her, this time by agreeing the metaphor was a bright comparison.
When she softens her reference to the hill with an explanation, he makes small talk for a moment, then
launches into his campaign to convince her of the banality of an abortion. At this point, Hemingway
inserts her name, which suggests empathy for the girl s position. By giving her a name, while leaving
the man without one, the reader might find her to be a more personalized character. She has a name,
which in human society is a symbol of individuality and importance, while someone that

  • 2. The Housing Crisis Of 2008 During the early 2000 s, the United States housing market experienced growth at an unprecedented rate, leading to historical highs in home ownership. This surge in home buying was the result of multiple illusory financial circumstances which reduced the apparent risk of both lending and receiving loans. However, in 2007, when the upward trend in home values could no longer continue and began to reverse itself, homeowners found themselves owing more than the value of their properties, a trend which lent itself to increased defaults and foreclosures, further reducing the value of homes in a vicious, self perpetuating cycle. The 2008 crash of the near $7 billion housing industry dragged down the entire U.S. economy, and by extension, the global economy, with it, therefore having a large part in triggering the global recession of 2008 2012. Contributing Factors The housing crisis of 2008 can trace its origins back to the stock market trends of the mid to late 90 s. During a period of extended growth in the stock market, increased individual wealth among investors led to generalized increases in spending, including in the housing market. With more disposable income in the pockets of consumers, the demand for housing increased in the late 90 s. Due to the fact that homes are large projects and their construction takes a large amount of time, the supply of homes in the market is inelastic on the short term. Because of the fixed supply of homes, as per the law of supply, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Court Room And One Party Lawyers are responsible to demand justice for those who have violated their legal rights or an act against the law. A lawyer is an individual that is trained to be able to handle any various legal issues at hand. Lawyers have many task such as protecting their clients life as well as belongings, defending a client if legal action is taken towards them, and guiding their client in the right direction of legal advice from the law. Our law is very complex, rather than asking someone to learn the law, as citizens we just pay someone who knows them, studies them and has practiced them in various ways. When thinking of lawyers many people only think about the big picture, two parties in a court room and one party becomes victorious. Lawyers are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In many cases lawyers have said wrong meaning in the court for something that the client had not even done, resulting in false accusation which could possibly put an innocent person away for nothing, this is why it is essential that lawyers prepare the way that they do. As a lawyer it is your job to prove adequate abilities towards your case and most of all your client. Seeking justice in the conclusion should be the attorneys goal even if the client presumes to be guilty. As a student with a passion for the study of law, I have no fear in being the first to say that justice is something we as people need to keep fighting for. Without justice who knows how things would be, our world would be a complete mess. Recognition of the good from the bad, as well as the just of our law, to the unjust. Becoming a lawyer is no easy task, in fact it is considered one of the more difficult choices as a career path. With law being so widely spread there are numerous approaches one may take in achieving the official goal in sight, being said, most find that the approach taken is not always the final result. For example, many attorneys that pursue becoming a prosecutor have a change of mind towards that study because they learn to combat with it so well, ultimately switching sides to become a defense ... • 4. Rhetorical Analysis Of Serving In Florida Serving In Florida Rhetorical Analysis As a social critic, Barbara Ehrenreich is able to provide opinions about societal issues. Regardless of her opinion, the audiences she reaches out to, take her stand point on what she writes about. In the excerpt of a chapter in her book, Nickel and Dimed , from her a research project she conducted, Ehrenreich vividly describes her experience as a server at a restaurant in Florida. This chapter is specifically for the upper middle and upper classes to show that minimum wage isn t enough for someone to be living off of. Ehrenreich reaches out to this specific audience because they aren t able to experience the harsh conditions the lower class comes across during their daily lives. Since the audience ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ehrenreich reminds her readers that the minimum paying job isn t enough to provide a decent house for herself, instead she has been living in a trailer. She reiterates that not only working conditions of the lower class are a factor to their poverty, but living conditions for the poor aren t as pleasant as they are for the upper middle class. She follows with another restriction that rises after a coworker of hers spends too much time at a bar. The employee turns out to be another woman who is, another trailer home dweller and a mother of three . She provides these details because the environment that lower class employees live in tends to drive them to getting drunk, or even into harmful habits for themselves and the people they surround themselves with. Ehrenreich explains this specific example because it presents how not only one employee is effected by a wrongdoing, but all of them are. Ehrenreich next moves on to explain that one of her coworkers was desperate enough to break into one of the storage rooms. This coworker just so happens to be her friend who lives with a number of other Czech dishwashers. According to Ehrenreich, he also, cannot sleep until one of them goes off for [their] shift, leaving a vacant bed . With these living conditions, her friend must have a hard time getting what he needs to survive. Ehrenreich uses this example to exemplify the meaning of sharing living quarters with so many other people where supplies are scarce. The only other option the lower class employees have to provide for themselves is usually stealing, which her friend got caught ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Analysis Of Jealous Extremaduran And Deceitful Marriage The exemplary novels are timeless not only for the stories they tell, but also for the vivid ways in which they depict society at the time when these stories were written. Through the analysis of Cervantes s Jealous Extremaduran and Deceitful Marriage, one is able to see and dissect the many jobs and roles played by people in society during the 16th and 17th centuries in Spain. In the story entitled The Jealous Extremaduran, Cervantes exhibits the roles of a hidalgo turned indiano, poor aristocrat, child of a merchant, and multiple slaves. In this story, a man named Felipe de Carrizales is born into vast wealth and depicted as a Hidalgo, or a nobleman. He spends it all upon finite entities and becomes stripped of all affluence. He then goes to the New World, becomes rich and returns to his homeland of Spain as an indiano. He subsequently falls in love with a young and beautiful girl, Leonora, and marries her. Leonora is a great representation of the aristocracy in Spain, because she is born with a good family, but does not possess any sort of wealth. Many people in Spain at this time had an aristocratic title, but only a select few held the wealth due to the practice of mayorazgo. Those like Leonora in society at that time were known as segundónes. While Carrizales is married to her, he has such a fear of her being unfaithful to him, that he builds a house analogous to a prison to hold her. A popular, young, and handsome bachelor named Loaysa becomes enamored ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This paper will be a literature review that discusses the notion that, the board of directors (the collective) as a self regulating social system. This will be achieved by a systematic review of a collection of works in the area of corporate governance spanning the birth of the industrial revolution to the modern day. The areas of emphasis will be a view to identifying the key concepts, issues and laws created to better focus the actions of boards. In addition to identifying the locations for each of these developments and how this has led to divergent practices across the globe. Following the review of the literature the author of this paper will seek to discern the current direction and nature of corporate governance in the future. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As such, for the first time the owners of companies were not directly involved in the day to day operation of the entities. This resulted in the formation boards of directors charged with overseeing and charting the direction of these entities. This is now referred to as shareholder capitalism (Grant, 2012), where a firm is to act in the best interests of its shareholders. This separation of the owners and managers of the business is the central reason for the existence of what is now referred to as corporate governance. As discussed by Smith (Smith, 1776), Berle (Berle, 1932) and Tricker (Tricker, 2012), this created several differing schools of thought. Concepts now referred to as agency, stewardship, resource dependence and enlightened stakeholder theories combined with ideas such as managerial and class hegemony and evolving social stakeholder philosophies will form the basis of our review into the abilities of boards to act in a self regulating manner. This paper will explore each of these in an attempt to discern if a pattern either has or is likely to emerge that enables boards to form a self regulating social system. Agency theory as a concept was first posed by the economist Adam Smith (Smith, 1776). He discussed the idea of how those charged with the custodial duty of leading entities they did not own, would be inclined to act in their own self interest and not in the interests of the ... • 7. Information Retrieval During The 1950s Chapter 1 1.1 Introduction Information Retrieval Information retrieval can be used in a broad term to mean physically bringing out what we have stored or kept earlier in order to use the information on it. For example, we have retrieved information when we retrieve our international passports from our pockets in order to copy the number on it into a form. It can also be described as the act of getting information, relevant to a need As an academic field of study however, it can be defined as ... finding material...of an unstructured nature...that satisfies an information need from within large collections... (C. Manning et al, 2008). This kind of information retrieval, used to be limited to a few people or professional searchers, as access to computers was limited at that time while the internet was not yet available. This however is no longer the case in the developed world as most people retrieve information by themselves when they search the web. The earliest form of computerised information retrieval began in the 1940s due to an increase in the production of scientific literature and availability of computers. This however was based on author, title and key words, rather than full text searches which came later. (Cleverdon, C.W. ACM press (1991).According to Mark Sanderson and W. Bruce Croft the capability of retrieval system grew as technology developed and processor speed and storage capacity increased. • 8. International Aid Or Development Assistance Essay International aid or development assistance is defined in several ways. The Organization for Economic Co operation and Development (OECD) defines international aid to include grants and loans to developing countries and territories which are: (i) with the promotion of economic development and welfare in the recipient country as the main objective and (ii) at concessional financial terms (i.e. conveys a grant element of at least 25 percent). This definition is commonly accepted, however; some analysts include loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as well as the World Bank (concessional or not) in their definitions. The history of international development aid can be tracked down to antiquity, however, the modern era saw international development aid begin to evolve in the 19th and early 20th century (Kapur, 2003) but the true expansion of international development aid was in the aftermath of the Second World War. The most significant events in accordance with the establishment of international development aid were the creation of The United Nations, The Marshall Plan, and The Bretton Woods conference that established the World Bank and the IMF. The modern manifestation of international development aid is extremely widespread. There are countless international organizations and governments present which all contribute to international development aid as it is a moral responsibility, however, what is the effectiveness of the aid they provide? • 9. White Wolf Mountain Research Paper White Wolf Mountain is a place of mystery. The Mountain is a majestic monolith, rising above all others and overlooking the valley it created. It harbors a Power older than any living thing on Earth. The Power has grown over centuries, millennia, eons never having been created, but having always existed. Nobody knows how it came to be, but they do know this: the Power is changing, evolving all the time. It sees all but it does not know all. The Power likes to learn. It likes to test its subjects and watch the outcome. The Power is a sentient being. Though it has no physical form and is confined to the Mountain, its influence extends far beyond its home of rock. The Power started taking an interest in the animals that evolved around it when the Earth was young. Only when the mammals started to come, and the Mountain grew in size with the shifting plates below did the Power have enough energy to begin to act on its whims. The first animal to come under the Power s influence was the wolf. A primitive creature, yet complex nonetheless. The wolf hunted and scavenged, were social creatures, communicating through howls and yips and body language and the Power was fascinated by this. The Power wanted to understand this, and when it had amassed enough energy, it created its own wolf. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The orchestration is beautifully conceived and the percussion writing is ideally suited for younger musicians. The piece begins in the percussion very quietly. All three players should be in equal balance. It is crucial that the timpani be tuned precisely as indicated. The main idea of the piece, first appearing at measure 12, dominates this section. Careful attention to balance and intonation should be given to the low brass stating the idea. The call motif is developed canonically at the tritone, first as a two part canon in tutti, then as a four part canon by soloists. The soloists should be of equal balance. As a minister and deep believer in peace, King refused to accept this way. He also believed that this form will only bring injustice to future generations. He explained how violence today will bring chaos tomorrow. An excellent statement made by Dr. King to disprove this method is, quot; The old law of an eye for an eye leaves everybody blind quot;. The third, and final, way that Marther Luther King Jr., talked about was nonviolent resistance. This form of dealing with oppression was strongly supported by King. He believed that the oppressed must consider the benefits of both methods, acquiescence and aggressiveness. A line that best describes my statement is quot;...the principle of nonviolent resistance seeks to reconcile the truths of two opposites the acquiescence and violence while avoiding the extremes and immoralities of both. quot; King believed that this was the best method and in order for it to be successful the Negros quot;must work passionately and unrelentingly quot;. I will describe some important symptoms of Groupthink with the aid of examples in business and will recommend some remedies for of Group Think that a manager can decide to do in their organisation. What is Groupthink? Groupthink is a phenomenon that happens in an organisation because often required to work in groups or teams. Almost all organisations work within groups on certain projects to reach a decision on ideas and plans. Groupthink requires the group to conform to the same beliefs and requires cohesiveness at all times. Groupthink occurs when a group makes faulty decisions because group pressure lead to a deterioration of mental efficiency, reality testing and moral judgement (Irving Janis). His film took advantage of this new technology by implementing a complex soundtrack, using this to help drive the story instead of solely relying on the pictures. Further, Lang also introduced a technique termed as leitmotif which in short is simply a recurring musical theme associated with something larger. This film also cleverly utilized the used of sound by often abruptly switching from a beautiful music score to natural noise from the streets of Paris. When talking about poverty, which is very obviously related to homelessness, people of color are far more likely to be in poverty than white people. In 2012 the median income for households of people of color, $33,321 for black households, and $39,005 for latinx households, was much lower than white households, $57,009 (Segal, Gerdes, Sue, 2016). This means that households of color earned less than two thirds less than white households (Segal, Gerdes, Sue, 2016). If people of color are making less than white people, and face discrimination in employment as well as housing, then it s obvious why they are more likely to be in poverty and experience homelessness. To combat the discrimination that homeless people face, social workers often must push for a change in a way that will allow for one of their main systems, security, to be stable. One example of how this is done is by doing something that s called rapid re housing. Rapid re housing is the process of immediately removing families out of homelessness and into permanent housing by aiding in deposits, rent, and utilities (Homelessness, 2015). Before rapid re housing they would place people in run down homes for at maximum of two years. Not only does rapid re housing cost less, but it has an 85% outcome of households being stably housed after the assistance ends (Johnston Kunkel, 2014). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of The Book Gladwell Maddy Rigby Smith AP English III 30 November 2014 In his previous book, Malcolm Gladwell coined the phrase tipping point , meaning the moment when an idea or concept suddenly becomes popular within the general populace, and in his following book, he gives us the term Outliers which means something that lies outside of the normal or the expected. In his book Blink, Gladwell provides us with two more phrases; thin slicing and blink. To blink is to act without thinking, working on split second decisions to make choices. Thin slicing is using the small amount of information that is known to come to a conclusion without further searching for more information. According to Gladwell, snap judgements often provide better decisions than well informed, over analysed ones, which is ironic in our generation of information overload. The book, in the way that Gladwell s books tend to do, opens with an anecdote, this one opening much like a detective novel, talking extensively about the discovery of a statue and about the group of analysers that were initially fooled by it, coming to believe that it had shown to be genuine after much study. After their extensive studying, they were sure in their deduction, but another group came into the picture soon after and looked at it or blinked and declared it a fake and a forgery and ended up being right. Barbara Tuchman in her book, The Guns of August, notes that unlike President Theodore Roosevelt, who believed that a person should speak softly and carry a big stick , the Germans believed that a person should speak loudly and brandish a big gun. This motto indicated the German belief in not only being strong, but also looking strong. The Germans also believed that war was ennobling. As the German writer Thomas Mann wrote, [War is] a purification, a liberation, an enormous hope. The victory of Germany will be a victory of soul over numbers. German officials believed that an effective way to impress Europe was through threats and a show of power. They wanted to win a war and humble Russia; crush Great Britain and deprive the British of their navy, India, and Egypt; to make France pay indemnity; force Belgium to yield its seacoast; and punish Japan. The German people had deep nationalistic views about their country. They believed that Germany was the top country and that all other countries should recognize it. The Germans felt as though they were the most educated and progressive people and as such they would enlighten the world. Many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Art of War Summary Art of War is a famous Chinese military strategy book written by Sun Tzu, an ancient Chinese military general. He was famous during his time and for his work entitled Art of War, which made him known even up to our century. According to Wallace (2010), Sun Tzu is the author of one of the most prominent pieces of literature during the era of the Warring States in which China entered around the first millennium B.C.E. In this work of art Sun Tzu takes a rational approach to the problem of conflict and dissects every aspect of it. Sun Tzu is undeniably an historical figure. The book is all about how to win a war by employing strategies and tactics given the information and ideas that every general must know from laying plans, handling his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sun Tzu said that the art of war recognizes Nine situations and these are elaborated in the eleventh chapter. These are: dispersive ground; facile ground; contentious ground; open ground; ground of intersecting highways; serious ground; difficult ground; hemmed in ground; desperate ground. Translators say that these nine situations can be generally grouped into early, middle, and late stage conditions, and they range from scattering to deadly. In each of these situations, there is one and only one appropriate response. As the title says, Attacking by fire this chapter is basically lays down the five different ways to attack the enemy using fire. First, burn the soldiers in their camp. Second, burn their stores. Third, burn their equipment. Fourth, burn their weapons. Lastly, burn their supplies. The ways mentioned have been widely used by many battles. The last chapter focuses on the importance of gathering information from reliable sources and managing them. It specifically discusses the value and methods of developing good information sources. It describes five kinds of spies: local spies, inside spies, reverse spies, dead spies, and living spies. Reliable information can help mold your own strategy and gain competitive ... • 32. Genetically Foods Should Be Approved For Human Consumption Genetically engineered foods are defined as foods that have had genes from other animals or plants (hereby referred to as foreign genes) added onto their genetic codes. The genetic engineering technique can be employed on animals, plants, or on such microorganisms as bacteria (NIH). The question of whether foods derived from such organisms should be approved for human consumption is what has raised widespread controversy among many circles. There are those who view GM foods as the ultimate solution to major challenges of the 21st century while others see them as a threat to human health and the environment. Notably, the global society is facing major challenges key among them being food insecurity and environmental issues such as global warming and climate change. Genetically engineered foods present a potential solution to these challenges. This paper will argue that with adequate research and regulation, genetically engineered foods should be approved owing to the benefits they present in terms of increased food production and quality, as well as eliminating the need to compromise the environment in the pursuit of more cultivation land and higher crop yield. In my view, we certainly need genetically engineered foods to fight food insecurity that characterizes the global society. A look at related statistics denotes a population that is facing serious food security challenges. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), an estimated 795 million individuals ... • 33. Business Ethics And Practices Of Goldman Sachs Assignment 1 Q1 What was up with Wall Street? The Goldman Standard and Shades of Gray. Go back through the case; make a list of each action/ practice that could be called a gray area. The problems to be investigated are the business ethics and practices of Goldman Sachs. There were several grey areas in which Goldman Sachs operated their business. Ethical Grey areas are situations and problems that don t fit neatly into any existing mode of ethical analysis within the business (Marshall, 2007). Peter Drucker s interpretation of business ethics is that personal ethics and business ethics cannot be separated. He uses the example of businessmen should not cheat, steal, lie, bribe, or take bribes. But nor should anyone else. He also mentioned that men and women don t acquire exemption from ordinary rules of personal behavior because of their work or job (Drucker, 1986). The first grey area was Goldman Sachs using a technique called layering . Goldman would start a company and used their own money to buy 90% of the shares. The public would see how the stocks were selling so quickly and wanted a piece of the pie. The public were unaware that Goldman was buying their own stocks and then continuously increasing the price of the stock and selling it back at the higher price. Goldman saw how well this was working and decided to continue with this practice. He started new companies and followed the same formula as before, making bags of money, while investors had no idea ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Cult of Contemporary Celebrity Essay Celebrity: (noun) 1. A well known person. 2. Fame, being famous. No doubt every simian tribe of hunter gatherers had their local celebrities: the woman who gave birth to quintuplets, the boy who swallowed a porcupine and survived, the man who wrestled with a tyrannosaurus and... well, he probably would have died, but celebrity status would have been applied posthumously. If, however, the man wrestling with a Tyrannosaurus was a modern Hollywood celebrity, not only would he have lived, he would have pocketed something like $20 million for his efforts, and earned the adulation of several billion people. The global celebration of modern celebrity is partly a product of our pre historic need for heroes. In a world where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Information on celebrities is not only very popular with the general public, it also popular with journalists. Interviewing a movie star requires almost no effort. The celebrity s publicist will provide you with every significant and insignificant detail of the celebrity s life. All you have to do is read this information, interview the subject, cut and paste what the celebrity says so the interview has a coherent structure, and `bang, there is your thousand or two thousand word article. Because of this modern media frenzy there are as many divisions of Hollywood celebrity as there are bird species in the Amazon. As the dim witted, obtuse and lethargic stars of Big Brother proved last summer you don t need any skills to become a celebrity these days, you just need to be in the media. In Hollywood there are A list commercial celebrities like Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts. • 35. Skeletal Muscle Contraction And Relaxation Is Vital For Skeletal muscle contraction and relaxation is vital for voluntary body movements to occur. Skeletal muscles contract when myofibrils composed of actin and myosin slide past each other, which contracts the muscle by altering its length. The gastrocnemius muscle in Rana pipiens, which is attached to the sciatic nerve, can be stimulated to find threshold and maximal stimulus voltage. Once threshold is reached, contraction amplitude increases with stimulus voltage until the maximal voltage is reached, at which point it levels off. Altering the interstimulus interval can induce twitch summation in the gastrocnemius, leading to one combined contraction with a high amplitude. Increased stimulus frequency can be used to induce a tetanic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Twitches are the resulting contraction from the firing of an AP in muscles. Twitches are much longer than the APs themselves. Twitch recruitment uses external stimuli to determine the threshold and maximal voltages of nerves and muscles. Stimuli below the threshold voltage, or the minimum stimulus strength required to elicit an action potential, will not cause a muscle to twitch. Once threshold potential is determined, increased stimulus voltage will increase the contraction amplitude of the twitch until the maximal stimulus is reached. The twitch will not significantly increase in strength for any voltage above maximal. This is because at maximal stimulus voltage all motor units have already been recruited to contract. The gastrocnemius muscle has a far higher threshold and maximal voltage that the sciatic nerve due to its size and the number of motor units present in the gastrocnemius. Along with increasing stimulus voltage, contraction amplitude can also be increased through twitch summation. Twitch summation occurs when a muscle is stimulated twice in quick succession, so that the second twitch occurs before the first twitch has relaxed. The twitches then combine to form a stronger muscle contraction. This process is made possible by the temporal relationship between a muscle s AP and the resulting twitch, which is far longer in duration than the 1 ms AP that causes it. Due to the nature of skeletal muscle contraction, the length tension relationship in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. An Analysis Of Hemingway s Hills Like White Elephants... In Hemingway s Hills Like White Elephants I found many layers of symbolism, and a fascinating psychological underplay afoot between his two characters. It begins with the girl s comment about a line of white hills seen in the distance, which she compares to white elephants. The man responds with the comment I ve never seen one. The symbolism of a white elephant is widely known as something very large or apparent that no one wishes to acknowledge or speak of in American society. It is an interesting opening to a very strained conversation concerning an apparent pregnancy, and the man s wish to terminate it. The couple s careful avoidance of actually naming the problem, or the proposed solution, suggests the situation in which a mate, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As an interesting note, the name wormwood derives from the German word Wermut, which translates as grievous in the English language. The man s response to her bitterness is one of irritation and he snaps at her, whereupon she promptly blames him for his lack of appreciation for her clever metaphor about the white hills; referring , most likely, to his distracted attitude. It seems likely she is accustomed to him complimenting her for her intelligence and wit, which is now not happening due to his worry over her pregnancy. He again placates her, this time by agreeing the metaphor was a bright comparison. When she softens her reference to the hill with an explanation, he makes small talk for a moment, then launches into his campaign to convince her of the banality of an abortion. At this point, Hemingway inserts her name, which suggests empathy for the girl s position. By giving her a name, while leaving the man without one, the reader might find her to be a more personalized character. She has a name, which in human society is a symbol of individuality and importance, while someone that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
