Hans Selye coined the term "eustress" in 1926 to refer to "good stress". Eustress occurs when one feels challenged but in control and committed to the outcome, rather than overwhelmed. Performers and athletes experience eustress through practice which gives them internal control over external circumstances. Eustress energizes performance through personal growth and commitment to one's purpose. Unlike distress, eustress dilates arteries and increases HDL cholesterol, benefitting physical and emotional health.
