What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
1. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA
INSTITUTION MIGHT
DISTRIBUTE YOUR
MEDIA PRODUCT AND
WHY?
OLIVER PILCHER
2. INSTITUTIONS INTRO
Within the world of media there are many different film
institutions. However the mainstream institutions often
distribute all different genres of films. This makes the
decision of which one would distribute ours hard.
Firstly I think that it will most likely be a mainstream
institutions because our film sticks to most conventions of
the thriller genre and most smaller companies would be more
likely to be a little more adventurous and go against the
normal conventions.
3. PARAMOUNT PICTURES
One of the original film institutions, founded in 1912. It is
referred to as one of the 'big six' film institutions. Paramount
are associated with films of all genre and most of them very
classic, well known films.
I do not think this is the right institution to
distribute our film, the films they produce are
rarely of the thriller genre. However like our film
they tend to stick to the generic conventions of
the genres. So although not first choice it is a
possibility as it has the same ideas as us when it
comes to film development and conventions.
• Saving Private Ryan (1998, US, Spielberg)
• Shutter Island (2010, US, Scorsese)
4. DREAMWORKS
One of the big American film institutions. The studio
currently has a worldwide distribution deal with The Walt
Disney Studios, who will market and distribute their films.
• Madagascar (2005, US, Darnell)
• Shrek (2001, US, Adamson)
This is definitely not the institution for our film, they mainly
distribute films aimed at children. Which is the complete
opposite audience to our film. Our film is aimed at adults not
children. So using DreamWorks to
distribute it would give people the
complete wrong idea about White
Walls. DreamWorks would also not
distribute it because they only
distribute mainstream films.
5. LIONSGATE
Lionsgate is one of the world’s leading film institutions and is
also part of the 'big six'. They have been involved in the
production of many of the big recent films such as:
Lionsgate would be quite as good institutions for us to
distribute our film through because their films are aimed at a
similar target audience. However they would most likely not
• The Hunger Games (2012,US, Ross)
• The Divergent (2014, US, Burger)
• The Expendables (2010, US, Stallone)
distribute our film because of
their location (US) and
because they mainly stick to
big high budget titles.
productions.
6. FILM4 PRODUCTIONS
It is owned by the channel four television company and was
created in 1982. They are responsible for backing a large
number of British films. They try to invest around £500,000
per film and around 20 films a year. They seek to back
diverse and different films.
This is the institution that would be most likely to distribute
our product. First of all because they are a British company
and also because they take a big interest in independent film
companies. As it says above they try to invest in
• Attack The Block (2011, UK, Cornish)
• Slumdog Millionaire (2009, UK, Boyle)
around 20 films per year. They also have many
ways of easily distributing our product, such as TV,
Cinema and online platforms.
