2. INSTITUION RESEARCH
In this research topic, I will be focusing on the different film distributors
that would distribute my film. I will look at the size of the business,
examples of films distributed and history of the company.
3. UNIVERSAL
Universal are one of the largest US film distributors in the world, releasing
global blockbusters on a weekly basis. Their calibre of film ranges from
excellent to Couples Retreat. In fact their CEO actually stated: "We make a
lot of sh**ty movies“ at a film conference.
It is because of this and the global dominance of the business that I will
not be choosing it as my distributor. I have concerns over financial
interference from the studio, with possible plot changes to hook a
different market.
4. PATHE
Whilst its history is fascinating due to its involvement in the rise of
cinemas across the world, Pathe remains a small but thriving distributor
and studios.
Whilst it has released some fantastic examples of independent film like
127 Hours, I feel its size will let it down. I feel my film needs a slightly
larger distributor in order to advertise and promote it.
5. LIONSGATE
Whilst its films are a mixed bag of good and terrible, Lionsgate remains
the largest independent film distributor in North America. Its very ethos
stands on foundations of support for smaller production companies like
Mangata Pictures.
I will chose Lionsgate because it will support me best with my film,
without interference or changes. Its recent influx in blockbuster films like
the Twilight Saga and Hunger Games series will mean an increase in
budget for international promotions.
