2. WHAT DOES A PRODUCTION COMPANY DO?
A production company is essential in getting a film started. Assisting budgeting,
scheduling, scripting and the wellbeing of the actors/actresses and directors on set.
Helping within the distributing and marketing sector to be able to get our film
recognised within such a competitive industry. The production company is largely
involved in the process of a developing film, around management therefore as a
group we made sure we had an established production company with a good
backing to help aid us within our film and make it as professional as possible and
produce the best product.
Production companies either being privately owned or form a larger conglomerate,
this mean they are in partnership to help each other with budgets and the overall
production process of the film. This has many benefits such as the sharing within the
costs sector however some production companies do run independently. This also
has benefits as they can contribute more into the film and how it should visually
appear. Production companies on a big scale include Universal, Metro Goldwyn, 20th
century fox and Paramount.
3. UNIVERSAL PICTURES
We believed that Universal pictures would be a good choice for a production company for
our film as they are well known globally as they have produced some of the most top films
making them household names such as the purge, the girl on the train and Jurassic world.
As well as choosing a production company that has succeeded in producing high grossing
blockbusters e also looked for a production company that has experience within marketing
and distributing thrillers. Ouija being another film previously produced by Universal pictures
consisting of the same genre alongside codes and conventions that we were trying to
achieve.
Founded in 1912 gave us the indication the experience universal pictures has within the film
industry and how this will become an advantage for us, moreover going on to produce some
of the most well known films and thrillers therefore proving they have the techniques and
methods to successfully produce our thriller.
4. OUR PRODUCTION COMPANY NAME AND LOGO
HGL production is a name as a group we believed was the best for our production
company as it was the initials of each member within the company, H (Honor Page)
G (Georgia Stevens) L (Lucy Rossiter). We did this as it is not common for
production companies to include the initials, our production company name is short
and easily read therefore memorable.
The first logo that we produced with feedback from teachers and friends suggested
that it was not suitable and did not fit the professional feel we desired. Our first one
lacking colour being just black and white, being very generic and not something the
audience could relate too. We liked the idea of a camera being the main focus of the
logo as it represented what we do, however needed to change it to something more
original. The bright colour of the red becomes visually pleasing for the audience
leaving an impression with our production company name displayed clearly. A logo
that is not usually seen giving a fresh appearance within the industry.
5. DISTRIBUTER
Being a film distributer includes responsibilities such as marketing the film. Being a film
distributer is usually different from a production company as distribution deals are an important
sector within funding a film. The distributer possibly set the release date of a film and the
method by which a film is to be exhibited or made available for viewing for example directly to
the public either theatrically or for home viewing. A distributor may do this directly such as
owning theatres or film distribution networks. A limited distributor may deal only with particular
products, such as DVDs or Blu-ray, or may act in a particular country or market. The primary
distributor will often receive credit in the film's credits, one sheet or other marketing material.
We researched many distributing companies such as Paramount, 20th century fox and
Universal pictures. We believed that sticking with Universal pictures for our distributer would be
the best choice, we believed this because it is evident they distribute a diverse range of films
that have gone on to be successful and produce such classics. Universal pictures being both a
production an distributing company therefore gain maximum recognition globally. Universal was
the first studio to have released three billion-dollar films in one year; this distinction was
achieved in 2015 with Furious 7, Jurassic World and Minions.
6. MONEY
Kickstarter is an enormous global community built around creative projects. Over 10 million people,
from every continent on earth, have backed a Kickstarter project. Kickstarter help bring creative
projects to life that includes the funding of companies starting within the film industry like ourselves.
Since their launch on April 28th 2009 13 million people have backed a project. By the public or
companies backing a project they are allocated certain rewards for the money they put in such as a
cut in the profits within the actual film sales or merchandise to being featured within a film.
We will use Kickstarter to our advantage to allow our company to receive funding to widen our budget
and allow us to have more to play with. Allowing the funders to chose how much they put towards our
project. An example of this is Pebble Time raising $20,338,986 (4,067 percent of goal) Funded: March
27, 2015. Pebble Time Steel watch has not only a new interface, but a Gorilla Glass lens and up to 10
days of battery life) and adding to its expansive (more than 6,500 apps) open platform app store.
Companies like Kickstarter are rapidly gaining in popularity and trust and high number of their funders
are seeing an increase in success in the companies they help out. Hopefully ourselves, HGL
Production can use this to our advantage to make our thriller as successful as possible.
7. TITLES
-The first title that will be presented to the audience is our production
company and distributer Universal Pictures.
-Followed by an HGL Production film, introducing our production company
to the audience.
-Then who is involved in the making of the film, such as who filmed it:
Honor Page, who produced it: Lucy Rossiter and the director: Georgia
Stevens.
-Finally the title of our film ‘Exitus’ is shown behind a black screen with
white writing to make it as clear as possible to the audience.
8. INTUITIONALLY
Women in black produced by Hammer films productions and directed by James Watkins and written by Jane
Goldman. It's the second adaptation of Susan Hill's 1983 novel of the same name, which was previously
filmed in 1989 starring film stars Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer, Sophie Stuckey, and Liz
White. Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), a lawyer, is recently widowed and grieving the loss of his wife when he
is sent to a remote village to put a deceased eccentric's affairs in order. This already puts the audience on
edge and it begins to reveal the dark tone of the film and beings to build tension. Soon after his arrival it
becomes clear that the villagers are hiding a terrible secret, in turn making the film more thrilling. Kipps
discovers that his late client's house is haunted by the spirit of a woman who is trying to find someone and
something she lost, and that no one, not even the children are safe from her terrible wrath.
The Silence of the Lambs is a 1991 American horrorthriller film directed by Jonathan Demme and starring
Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, and Scott Glenn adapted by Ted Tally from the 1988 novel of the same
nameby Thomas Harris. Jodie Foster stars as Clarice Starling, a top student at the FBI's training academy.
Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) wants Clarice to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant
psychiatrist who is also a violent psychopath, serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and
cannibalism. Crawford believes that Lecter may have insight into a case and that Starling, as an attractive
young woman, may be just the bait to draw him out.
9. SELLING POINT
Our film posses a unique selling point as our film is a psychological thriller, this allows the
director and producer to manipulate the audience in feeling a certain way. This can be
influenced by the key features of any thriller such as mise en scene. The nature of a
psychological thriller.
Our thriller will be purchased and viewed worldwide as psychosocial thriller is within a the four
major thriller genre, action, criminal, horror and psychological. With the help of Universal
pictures, a multi successful global company based in America making some of the most well
known thrillers such as Ouija in partnership with us, HGL Productions in England it can help us
to advance to the best of our abilities. We cant target all audiences within different countries as
everyone has different preferences in what genre of thriller they prefer and want to watch.
Therefore as a company we will work hard to reach this aim and come across as a professional
and hardworking company for to be recognised within the industry and hopefully lead to other
companies considering or reaching out to us to distribute our thriller.
10. NETFLIX AND NOW TV
Online streaming websites such as Netflix are becoming more of the most common ways to watch films quicker
and at a cheap cost, all in the comfort of there own homes. This ability to give the audience when and how to
watch the latest films without the restriction of being in a cinema has a wide appeal and a large percentage of the
population within England and other countries use this method, and will continue to grow.
Netflix has grew significantly in a short period of time, this had been due to the wide variety of genres of films and
tv programmes they offer and can cater to a mass audience effectively, low prices further entice the audience
more. Having our thriller featured on Netflix will widen our audience and fan base and hopefully lead to an increase
in sales and overall interest.
Now TV being dominant in the UK therefore having a smaller audience then Netflix however still being competitive
with many other streaming websites including Netflix means our thriller can be found more easily if we widen gap
in preference to what we are streamed on. The more our thriller can get out there the more interest we will attract
with potentially larger conglomerates or private companies. Expansion had lead to merchandise and apps that will
extent our profit margin and make a global successful thriller.
