Web Lessons is an online learning management system that structures the internet into a safe learning environment for students, guiding them through curated educational websites. It uses an instructional model comprised of four steps: prepare, learn, practice, and apply. The prepare step activates prior knowledge with introductions and scenarios. Students then learn through engaging media-rich websites, with integrated questions and references. They practice their understanding through short quizzes with feedback. Finally, students apply what they learned through written projects tied to the initial scenario.

3. Prepare This important step prepares students to learn by activating backgroundknowledge and generating interest in the topic. This preparation can beginoffline as a whole-class discussion, but we also repeat the preparation onlinein the form of an introduction and scenario. The scenario is a situated learningproposition that provides students with a meaningful context for the lesson areason for them to pay close attention.

4. Learn During the learning stage, students are guided through a series of Webresources that engage them with rich content. We give preference to sitescontaining rich media (audio, video, animations, and simulations) andprimary sources. For each site we include a bibliographic reference (modifiedMLA format), glossary, and integrated study questions emphasizing higherorder thinking.

Practice To help reinforce learning and provide a low-stress level of accountability,students are given an opportunity to practice recalling some of the details ofwhat they have learned in the lesson. For Web Lessons, that means a shortquiz (multiple choice) integrated into every lesson. Students answer questionsonline and receive immediate feedback; they are free to go back into thelesson and review if necessary. This quiz can also be taken prior to the lesson,as well as after the lesson to provide pre- and post-lesson assessment.
