WHAT HAVE I LEARNED FROM
MY AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
Q: In what genre would you place my
music video?
• Best Answer: I would place this video in the r’n’b
genre. I would say it is closely related to the rap genre
because there is a part where ‘Rick Ross’ raps his lyrics.
(Ben, 18)
• Analysis: Here my audience agree with the genre
choice in which I have made for my video. I have
however decided to hybrid the genre and make it an
r’n’b/rap song because of the rap verse that Rick Ross
does. This tells me that my video correctly addressed
my primary audience as they understood what genre of
video I was trying to imply.
Q: Do you think there was anything in
the video that shouldn’t have been
there?

• Best Answer: I feel as though the running tap had little
relevance to the plot of the music video. I don’t
understand why it was there. (Jamie 20)
• Analysis: My primary audience disagreed with one of
the features in my video. I chose to use a running tap
as a metaphor for ‘running’ and also ‘wasting’. The tap
is running which can relate to my artist, ‘running’ away
to paradise, or it could also mean, ‘time wasted’ as the
water is wasted down the tap hole. It was a hard idea
to communicate to my audience and maybe could have
made it clearer by showing the water disappearing
down the plug hole in the basin.
Q: Was there anything that should
have been included but wasn’t?
• Best Answer: I think there could have been a female in
the video. That way, we would be able to find it easier
to establish what the artist is actually longing for. (Ellie,
22)
• Analysis: My audience think it would be good for me to
have a girl in my video. This is a good piece of feedback
as I too feel that it would be easier for the audience to
interpret and also would add to the narrative. If I was
making this video again, I would most certainly include
a girl because it would add so much more meaning to
the storyline of the track.
Q: Did the video follow the typical
generic conventions of it’s genre?
• Best Answer: The video is in the r’n’b genre, and so the
use of money, jewelry, motorcycles, fancy clothing and
hats, gave me reason to believe it is a generic video.

• Analysis: Here my audience agree that what I have
included in my video is typical of its genre. I am glad I
have achieved this because I think some of the
conventions are challenging to meet, such as the motor
bikes. It wasn’t easy to get 3 people to park their bikes
down an alleyway in order for me to film them, but the
fact that it helps my audience establish the genre,
makes it crucial to the video.
Q: What magazine would you expect
to see my advert in?
• Best Answer: I would expect to see your magazine
advert in the ‘R&B Showcase’ magazine. I say this
because that magazine is full of artists from the R&B
genre, in which are not yet signed to a major recording
label. (Amy, 21)
• Analysis: Here my audience decided that my magazine
advert should be shown in the ‘R&B Showcase’
magazine. This makes sense because that magazine is
for artists who haven’t been signed by major recording
labels, and it is a chance for artists and managers to
promote their music through the magazine media.
Secondary Audience
Q: In what genre would you place my
music video?
• Best Answer: I would put it in the rhythm and
blues genre as it has lots of slow moving
scenes that fade into one-another. (Millie, 53)
• Analysis: I am glad my secondary audience can
establish which genre the video is made for.
This is good to hear as the video is targeted at
a much younger audience of males and
females aged 14-22.
Q: Do you think there was anything in
the video that shouldn’t have been
there?

• Best Answer: A woman should have been in the
video.
• Analysis: My audience think it would be good for
me to have a girl in my video. This is a good piece
of feedback as I too feel that it would be easier
for the audience to interpret and also would add
to the narrative. If I was making this video again, I
would most certainly include a girl because it
would add so much more meaning to the
storyline of the track.
Q: Was there anything that should
have been included but wasn’t?
• Best Answer: Didn’t understand the scenes
with the white backgrounds.
• Analysis: The white background scenes were
meant to portray my artist being in another
dimension. He could either be in
heaven/paradise/Mars. The point that is being
made, is that the artist is in his fantasy, similar
to a dream.
Q: Did the video follow the typical
generic conventions of it’s genre?
• Best Answer: Yes it was what I expected to see in
a R&B style video. Money was shown quite a
lot, along with the flashy jewelry and clothes.
• Analysis: It is an achievement when someone
older than your target audience can establish the
conventions used to help make it look like an R&B
rap video. They have pointed out the use of
money in the video, claiming that it is shown
quite a lot, which is again the ideology behind the
numerous shots of it clustered together.
Q: What magazine would you expect
to see my advert in?
• Best Answer: I would expect to see this advert in
the ‘Singers Room’ magazine.
• Analysis: I may have to disagree with this
statement, as I feel as though the ‘Singers Room’
magazine would be too ‘old fashioned’ for my
magazine advert, as my advert is young, bright
and vibrant. My secondary audience who
answered this question are considerably older
than what my target audience are, and so the
generation gap is obvious when selecting what
magazine to put this advert in.
What Have I Learned?
• Overall, if I was to make this music video
again, I would certainly include a female to
help add to my narrative. I would cut out the
scenes in which the tap is running as it adds
no relevance to the plot, but would claim this
video as being successful as every one of my
audience’s was able to establish what genre it
was from, and what made up the conventions
of the R&B genre.

What Have I Learned From My Audience Feedback?

  • 3. Q: In what genre would you place my music video? • Best Answer: I would place this video in the r’n’b genre. I would say it is closely related to the rap genre because there is a part where ‘Rick Ross’ raps his lyrics. (Ben, 18) • Analysis: Here my audience agree with the genre choice in which I have made for my video. I have however decided to hybrid the genre and make it an r’n’b/rap song because of the rap verse that Rick Ross does. This tells me that my video correctly addressed my primary audience as they understood what genre of video I was trying to imply.
  • 4. Q: Do you think there was anything in the video that shouldn’t have been there? • Best Answer: I feel as though the running tap had little relevance to the plot of the music video. I don’t understand why it was there. (Jamie 20) • Analysis: My primary audience disagreed with one of the features in my video. I chose to use a running tap as a metaphor for ‘running’ and also ‘wasting’. The tap is running which can relate to my artist, ‘running’ away to paradise, or it could also mean, ‘time wasted’ as the water is wasted down the tap hole. It was a hard idea to communicate to my audience and maybe could have made it clearer by showing the water disappearing down the plug hole in the basin.
  • 5. Q: Was there anything that should have been included but wasn’t? • Best Answer: I think there could have been a female in the video. That way, we would be able to find it easier to establish what the artist is actually longing for. (Ellie, 22) • Analysis: My audience think it would be good for me to have a girl in my video. This is a good piece of feedback as I too feel that it would be easier for the audience to interpret and also would add to the narrative. If I was making this video again, I would most certainly include a girl because it would add so much more meaning to the storyline of the track.

Q: Did the video follow the typical generic conventions of it’s genre? • Best Answer: The video is in the r’n’b genre, and so the use of money, jewelry, motorcycles, fancy clothing and hats, gave me reason to believe it is a generic video. (Tommy, 19) • Analysis: Here my audience agree that what I have included in my video is typical of its genre. I am glad I have achieved this because I think some of the conventions are challenging to meet, such as the motor bikes. It wasn’t easy to get 3 people to park their bikes down an alleyway in order for me to film them, but the fact that it helps my audience establish the genre, makes it crucial to the video.
  • 7. Q: What magazine would you expect to see my advert in? • Best Answer: I would expect to see your magazine advert in the ‘R&B Showcase’ magazine. I say this because that magazine is full of artists from the R&B genre, in which are not yet signed to a major recording label. (Amy, 21) • Analysis: Here my audience decided that my magazine advert should be shown in the ‘R&B Showcase’ magazine. This makes sense because that magazine is for artists who haven’t been signed by major recording labels, and it is a chance for artists and managers to promote their music through the magazine media.
  • 9. Q: In what genre would you place my music video? • Best Answer: I would put it in the rhythm and blues genre as it has lots of slow moving scenes that fade into one-another. (Millie, 53) • Analysis: I am glad my secondary audience can establish which genre the video is made for. This is good to hear as the video is targeted at a much younger audience of males and females aged 14-22.

Q: Do you think there was anything in the video that shouldn’t have been there? • Best Answer: A woman should have been in the video. • Analysis: My audience think it would be good for me to have a girl in my video. This is a good piece of feedback as I too feel that it would be easier for the audience to interpret and also would add to the narrative. If I was making this video again, I would most certainly include a girl because it would add so much more meaning to the storyline of the track.

Q: Was there anything that should have been included but wasn’t? • Best Answer: Didn’t understand the scenes with the white backgrounds. • Analysis: The white background scenes were meant to portray my artist being in another dimension. He could either be in heaven/paradise/Mars. The point that is being made, is that the artist is in his fantasy, similar to a dream.
  • 12. Q: Did the video follow the typical generic conventions of it’s genre? • Best Answer: Yes it was what I expected to see in a R&B style video. Money was shown quite a lot, along with the flashy jewelry and clothes. • Analysis: It is an achievement when someone older than your target audience can establish the conventions used to help make it look like an R&B rap video. They have pointed out the use of money in the video, claiming that it is shown quite a lot, which is again the ideology behind the numerous shots of it clustered together.

Q: What magazine would you expect to see my advert in? • Best Answer: I would expect to see this advert in the ‘Singers Room’ magazine. • Analysis: I may have to disagree with this statement, as I feel as though the ‘Singers Room’ magazine would be too ‘old fashioned’ for my magazine advert, as my advert is young, bright and vibrant. My secondary audience who answered this question are considerably older than what my target audience are, and so the generation gap is obvious when selecting what magazine to put this advert in.
  • 14. What Have I Learned? • Overall, if I was to make this music video again, I would certainly include a female to help add to my narrative. I would cut out the scenes in which the tap is running as it adds no relevance to the plot, but would claim this video as being successful as every one of my audience’s was able to establish what genre it was from, and what made up the conventions of the R&B genre.
