Today I will be presenting my analysis of Whale Rider. The theme I have chosen to
analyse is how Pai repeatedly demonstrates that individual strengths are more
important than gender stereotypes and in this way challenges the traditional MДЃori

This theme is illustrated throughout the movie in a number of ways, in particular: Pai

The second scene that shows Pai s intelligence is when she notices that Koro is

The second example that I will be examining is that Pai has better leadership qualities

The first scene that portrays Pai s leadership qualities is when she finds Hemi crying
about his father abandoning him. Angered by Pai s questioning he proceeds to fight
her with a traditional MДЃori weapon called Taiaha, which Koro had been teaching

PGD, or pre implantation genetic diagnosis uses IVF, in vitro fertilisation

being able to have healthy children, without the fear that they could inherit one of

hole cut out of it through a laser, and small sections of DNA are removed for

embryos are free of the genetic condition, in which case the couple are able to
