The document discusses the key functions of social work. It describes restoration of social functioning, provision of resources, and prevention of social dysfunction as the three basic functions. Restoration involves curative and rehabilitative aspects to address environmental factors hindering individuals' functioning and rebuild interaction patterns. Provision of resources focuses on developmental and educational functions to extend existing resources and raise awareness. Prevention aims to identify and address conditions that could hamper effective social functioning between individuals and groups and prevent social issues. Social work focuses on addressing problems but should also work to prevent issues from the beginning.

2. Functions of social work
The natural activity of social work or descriptions
of how social work operates are referred to as
the function of social work.
Social work helps people adjust to society's
institutional framework while also attempting to
change the institutional framework in suitable
areas.
• Function of social work refers to the natural
activity of social work or the statements of how
social work operates. The basic functions of
social work are:
3. Conti..
1. Restoration of social functioning
2. Provision of resources and
3. Prevention of social dysfunction.
4. Restoration
• This function is the oldest and most commonly known
function of social work profession. Restoration of
impaired social functioning may be subdivided into
curative and rehabilitative aspects. The curative aspects
are to eliminate environmental factors that have caused
break down of social functioning of individuals, groups or
communities and the role of the rehabilitative aspects is
to recognize and rebuild interaction patterns in the
society.
5. • The environmental factors hindering the
functioning of a person may be social, economic,
political or cultural. Therefore, if a person
becomes dysfunctional due to any of the above
mentioned environmental factors, the first task at
hand will be to restore the person’s normal
functioning. The second task will be to assess
the damage caused by the dysfunction and
strategies are devised to rehabilitate the person
socially and bring him back to the normal
mainstream
Restoration
9. Provision of resources
Provision of resources is subdivided into
developmental and educational. The
developmental aspects are designed to extend
effectiveness of existing social, human and
material resources or to bring about full
utilization personal capacity for more social
interaction. The educational functions are
designed to make the public aware about
specific conditions and needs for new and
changing resources and approaches.
10. Prevention of social dysfunction
Prevention of social dysfunction, involves early
discovery, control, and elimination of conditions
and situations that potentially could hamper
effective social functioning.
The two main divisions are the prevention of
problems in the area of interaction between
individuals and groups and, second, the
prevention of social ills. Although it is a very
important function of social work, it is neglected
in most situations.
12. • Social work has generally concentrated on the
curative and rehabilitative function and has
worked on the problem solving model. The
profession should ensure that problems are
neither created nor eliminated at the very
beginning. For this function the social workers
play a crucial role of conscientization, capacity
building and organizing people so that they
themselves can prevent social dysfunctions.

15. Conti…
The oldest and most well-known role of social work
is the repair of poor social functioning. This
function is separated into two parts: curative and
rehabilitative. The role of the curative aspects is
to identify and reconstruct interaction patterns in
society, whereas the role of the rehabilitative
components is to eliminate environmental
conditions that have produced a breakdown in
social functioning of individuals, groups, or
communities.
16. 1.Curative Function
• Medical and health services, psychiatric
services, child counseling, child welfare
services, and services for the handicapped
or disabled in the form of protection and
rehabilitation are among the services
given under curative duties.
• These services are aimed at curing
persons' medical, social, material, and
psychological illnesses.
17. 2.Correctional Function
• The correctional function of social work has three broad
areas, such as:
a) Individual reform service which includes prison reform,
probation and other related services.
b) Services for improving social relationship which
includes family welfare services, school social work,
industrial social work etc.
c) Services for social reform that includes employment
services, prevention of beggary prohibition services etc
18. 3.Preventive Function
It covers services like as life insurance, public
assistance, social legislation, adult education,
and disease prevention, among others. This sort
of function mostly deals with services linked to
the prevention of issues such as insecurity,
illegality, ignorance, and illness, among others. It
aims to eliminate those aspects of the social
environment or personality flaws that prohibit an
individual from attaining a minimum acceptable
standard of socioeconomic life.
19. 4.Developmental Function
• The tasks of socio-economic development
activities such as education, recreational
services, urban and rural development
programmes, and integration programmes,
among others, which are primarily concerned
with the development of individuals, families,
groups, and communities, are included in the
developmental function.
20. As previously said, social work aims to intervene
where the individual interacts with his
surroundings. Environmental variables that
obstruct a person's ability to perform can be
social, economic, political, or cultural.
This function focuses on issue solving through
changes in the psychosocial environment of
individuals and groups, as well as changes in
the attitudes of service receivers.
Functions of social work
21. As a result, if a person becomes dysfunctional as a
result of any of the aforementioned
environmental influences, the first goal will be to
restore normal functioning.
The second step will be to analyze the damage
caused by the dysfunction, and solutions will be
designed to socially rehabilitate the person and
reintegrate him into society.
Functions of social work
22. Resource provision is further separated into
developmental and educational categories. The
developmental features are intended to increase
the effectiveness of current social, human, and
material resources, or to maximise personal
potential for increased social involvement. The
educational functions are intended to raise
public awareness of certain situations as well as
the necessity for new and evolving resources
and techniques
Functions of social work
23. Early detection, correction, and elimination of factors and
situations that could hinder efficient social functioning
are all part of the prevention of social dysfunction. The
prevention of issues in human contact (individuals and
groups) and the prevention of social ills are the two main
sections.
Despite the fact that it is a critical function of social work, it
is frequently overlooked. In general, social work has
focused on the therapeutic and rehabilitative functions,
as well as the problem-solving approach
