2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2. We were asked to analyze three different websites of three different bands
as our pre-production work for our 'Music Video' project.
As I have previously researched on the 'Digipaks' of the bands Blink-
182,Green Day and 5 seconds of summer I have decided to use their
websites for my website analysis.
3. Blink-182
For my first website I will be looking at the website of the band 'Blink-182'.
Blink-182 is a very popular band of the 'Punk-Rock' genre and has been
around since 1992.
4. 'www.blink182merch.com' is the name of their website which is basically an
online store for their merchandise.
When we first open the website we are greeted with a pop-up which says
to the audience to put their 'Email' address to get exclusive news about
the band e.g 'New Releases, Tour Dates, Sales, & More'.
After that when we truly enter the 'website' we are presented with a big image with
3 people wearing 'Blink-182' merchandise.
6. When we scroll down there are even more merchandise (T-
shirts,Hoodes,Pouch etc)
on the top right there are categories which includes
sweatshirts,wristbands,posters etc.
And on the most right there are links to different social media websites so
that the fans can connect to the band easily.
7. On the top left there is a band's logo.
The logo is black and has a very edgy look to it
which makes it very relatable to the 'Punk-Rock'
genre.
On the bottom of the website the band has given details as
to how to contact them for business purposes.
8. Green Day.
The color theme of the Green day website is of the '3' albums that came
out in 2012.These three albums were very similar to each other in pretty
much everything from the names (Uno, Dos, Tré!) to their design.
These are the last albums that came from Green Day till now.
9. This is the front page of their website.
we an see the color theme of bright colors which is as i said before comes
from their albums. On the top we can see the 'Green Day' logo in bright pink
in contrast with the bright shades of blue in the background.
In the middle we can see the 'news feed' section in which the latest news
relating to the band updates on a regular basis. On the right side they have a
10. Then on the bottom they have the same link to their other pages of
the website but besides that they also have links to their social media
websites so they can interact with their without much effort.
11. Then if we go down a little down we see that there is a section which
notifies us of the upcoming tour dates.
below that we a 'Twitter' section in which the tweets from
the band members are displayed.
12. On the top just below the main panel there is this another sub panel which has 4
links which leads us to other pages.
Starting from the left there is this album 'Stop Drop and Roll!!!' by the band
'Foxboro hottubs' which is a garage rock side project of Green Day, formed in
2007. The band includes all members of Green Day, and features Kevin Preston of
Prima Donna Their first album Stop Drop and Roll!!! was released on April 22,
2008.
Then after that there is this link which leads us to a page dedicated to the album
'American idiot' talking about the idea behind it,the characters it includes, marketing
guideline etc.
13. As of right now the 'International' link is not working. As we can see above.
And the last link is of the short documentary 'Heart Like a Hand Grenade'
made on the band.
14. 5 Seconds of Summer
Before we get to the home page we get this page instead
in which the new album of the band is advertised.
This is the second album by the band which has been long
awaited.
15. 5 Seconds of Summer
This is the front page of '5 Seconds of Summer' website
16. mise en scène:
On the Top same as other bands websites
we can see the band's logo.
And under it we can see the panel that
includes links to other pages of the website.
In the middle there is a section that shows
about 5 latest news related to the band.
As in this picture we can see that the band
will be hosting a show at the Wembley Arena.
On the right side there is a picture which
says 'Hey everybody' which is a song from
their new album ''Sounds Good Feels Good'
There is also a link that leads us to the
'itunes' page from where we can buy the entire
album digitally.
Below this there is a section showing the
band's latest tweets.
17. Fonts:
The logo of the band is in 'Serif font'.The logo is same in all the three places on the website which tells
about its consistency and how they want their logo to be easily recognizable by keeping its look
same.Just like the logo which is all 'funky' looking the rest of the fonts on the website also aren't plain
and simple which goes well with the logo it-self and also with the 'Punk-Rock' genre.
Social meda:
On the top right corner we can see the link to their social media pages.
By doing this the fans are able to find all the band's social media pages easily and at one place.
18. When we click on the 'News' link we are brought to this page.
The page has the 'Latest News' regarding the band which can be
seen above. This section of the website is basically for the fans as it
tells the news regarding the band which is what most fans want.
On the right side there is an ad telling us that the new album of the
band is out. Then below this there are social media sections of
'Tweeter' & 'Instagram' for the fans.
19. In the 'Live' section the fans can get the details of the tour of the
band.
The details such as 'Dates','venues','city' and 'Country' regarding the
show.
The fans can then also buy tickets of the shows they want to go to
right from this page.On the right side the content is same as on the
20. In the 'Store' section of the website the band has a
wide variety of merchandise to offer to their fans.
The store also includes the dvd of the bands
documentary along with posters,shorts,jackets etc
21. The page also include a section where the band members a shown
wearing some stuff that the fans can also buy from the website.
They way the captions are written 'Luke's cap','Calum's
sweater','Ashton's hoodie' and 'Mikey's shirt' it look like these are band
member's personal clothing or belongings which makes the fans
more eager to buy them.
22. Photos & Videos section
The 'Photos' section
of the website
includes pictures
from the instagrams
of the band
members.
And the 'Videos'
section of the
website includes
the links to the
'Music videos' and
'Behind the scenes
stuff'on youtube.
23. The last section of the website is the 'Newsletter' section.
In this section a person is required to sign up with their social media
account or by their e-mail address.

quicker e.g New music videos,New tours,New album etc
