2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. On the band’s
website, the
audience can make
an account and log
in to receive
exclusive
information. This can
come in the form of
an emailed
newsletter which
sometimes reveals
tour dates early and
access to pre-sale
tickets. These are
perks of having an
account and
encourages fans to
join.
There is a large section for band photos which are taken by the touring
photographer. This allows the entire fanbase to catch a glimpse of the
band in concert and behind the scenes. The majority of these photos are
of Hayley as she is the lead singer and seen as the face of the band.
Some are of the crowds at concerts which attendees can look back at.
Fans appreciate this as they can attempt to find themselves and they are
featured on their favourite band’s website.
Also featured on the home page is
the ‘Paramore Yard Sale’ which sees
the band’s old clothes and
belongings from tour being sold in an
auction to raise money for charity.
The band is seen to be using their
fame and consumer’s devotion to
everything Paramore as a positive
and mutually beneficial.
There is a drop down menu on the website where the audience can
select their country. Once selected, slight changes are apparent on the
website including currency changes and differing release dates. By
having tailored for different countries fans can easily access the things
relevant to them.
The ‘News’ section of
the home page contains
links to articles
published by
mainstream music
organisations. The
Billboard article however
is not written about
Paramore but instead of
Hayley Williams yet it is
still presented on the
Paramore website.
3. The home page also has a link to the bands Instagram account with the
latest photo published being placed central on the page. This quickly
provides visitors to the site a source into the private lives of the band.
Modernly, fans of bands and artists are increasingly interested in their
private lives. This may be due to social media as the bands are now able
to access their fans on a truthful and personal level opposed through
magazine.
The header of the website is the band name in the official
font. This creates synergy across all of their different media
texts and makes the band name recognisable.
Unlike the band’s
digipaks, the band
members are featured
on the website with a
photograph of them
used as a banner. Josh,
the lead singer is sat at
the front looking relaxed
with the rest of the band
behind him.
The band’s house style is continued through to the website
with black and light grey. The contrast between the colours is
strong and results in the headers and tabs standing out. It also
gives an impression of authority as the statements look bold.
You Me At Six also have
a newsletter that is
available for fans to sign
up to. It is in a very
accessible and
noticeable setting with
small illustration next to
it to avoid mass writing
as the theme of the
website is simplistic.
All three websites I have
analysed have similar
tabs: home, news,
images, live, videos, and
store. This conveys to
myself that these are the
typical conventions of
websites of this music
genre.
The website advertises
the new ‘special edition’
of the latest album and
gives a direct link to
iTunes for the consumer
to purchase with ease.
4. This counter was a
countdown to
‘derpcon’, a fan
convention that the
band’s
management had
organised for the
fans.
House style of purple, black, and grey – matched the Don’t Stop EP
which was the latest music they had released when this website was
updated. The band logo is also present on the upper left. This is an
example of synergy.
In addition to the counter to
‘derpcon’, an online game was also
released to promote the event. It
was was mainly used to target the
fans that were not attending the
convention so they could still be a
part of it.
The home page of the
website is a platform
which holds all of the
most up-to-date
information about the
band. This involves the
latest, albums, videos,
pictures, and concert
dates. By having all of this
information together it
results in the website and
the band being very
accessible to the
consumer.
The website is a big
source of the band’s
income with
suggestions to buy
into the band all
around. For example
there is the ‘store’
tab and then on the
home page there is a
direct link to
purchase the album.
Also, the ‘live’ tab
directs the audience
to a ticket buying
service.
There is an option to subscribe to the
newsletter. This allows the record
label to send emails to the individuals
who signed up alerting to them to
upcoming gigs and ‘inside’ gossip
with personalised messages from the
band members.
The use of the personal
pronoun ‘we’re’ illustrates
that the band are
attempting to connect to
the fans. It can be
interpreted as the band
meaning ‘we’ as a
collective including the
fans, or as in a personal
note opposed to
management.
