WATER POLLUTION

What is water
pollution?
Pollution is the
contamination of the
natural environment
with harmful
substances often as
a consequence of
human activities.
Water Pollution occurs when energy and other
materials are released into the water,
contaminating the quality of it for other users.
Types of water pollution
 Microbiological
Chemical
Oxygen-depleting Substances
Nutrients
Oil pollution
 Marine Dumping
 Industrial Waste
 Sewage, mainly
from households
 Nuclear waste
 Oil pollution
 Underground
storage leaks
CAUSES
-Domestic households,
- agricultural practices produce
wastewater that can cause pollution of
many lakes and rivers.
Dumping of litter in the sea can cause
huge problems in marine animals and
may result in death.
Nuclear waste is
produced from
industrial, medical and
scientific processes
that use radioactive
material. Nuclear
waste can have
detrimental effects on
marine habitats
 Toxic water
 Thermal heating
 Our sources of
water
 Diseases caused by:
 Drinking
contaminated
water
 Swimming in
polluted water
 Contact with
chemically
polluted water
 200 turtles in Australia’s surround
waters die each year
 Birds and mammals become
coated with oil
• poisoning drinking
water
• poisoning food animals
• unbalanced river and
lake ecosystems that
can’t support full
biological diversity
any more
• deforestation from
acid rain, and many
others.
Turn off running water
• Be careful about what you
throw down your sink or
toilet.
• Use environmentally
household products, such
as washing powder,
household cleaning agents
and toiletries.
• Take great care not to
overuse pesticides and
fertilisers.
• Don't throw litter into
rivers, lakes or oceans.
Fertilize correctly
Participate in a clean up
Spread awareness
Planting more trees can
also prevent water pollution
by reducing soil erosion and
water runoff i think that
educating people about
water pollution is an
important way of
preventing water pollution.
