The group designed, constructed, and tested a heat pipe to cool small engines as an alternative to existing air or liquid cooling methods. They created CAD models and conducted simulations before building a 1” diameter copper pipe with distilled water as the working fluid. Four tests showed improvements as radiator fins and a tighter seal were added. The final test demonstrated effective heat transfer from the evaporator end, through the pipe, and out of the condenser end and radiator fins. While construction challenges arose, the project met its goal of creating a functional small engine cooling heat pipe and provided insights into heat pipe design and principles.

Distillation is one of many processes available for water purification, and sunlight has heat energy that can be used to power that process. Sunlight has advantage of zero fuel cost but it available in attuned format so requires larger collector areas i.e. absorber surfaces due to this it becomes costlier equipment. It is misnomer that for distillation we need to boil water actually simply elevating its temperature, short of boiling will adequately increase the evaporation rate. In fact, although vigorous boiling hastens the distillation process it also can force unwanted residue into the distillate, defeating purification. To boil water with sunlight requires more costly apparatus than is needed to distill it little more slowly without boiling. Different levels of purification can be achieved with this equipment which can be used for sterilized water for medical uses. Purification of heavy water in dissolved salts differs from purification of water that has been dirtied by other chemicals processes.

This document describes an experiment to artificially recreate the natural water cycle using paraffin wax to purify contaminated water. The natural water cycle involves evaporation and condensation of ocean water to distill out impurities. In this experiment, paraffin wax is used as a phase change material inside metal tubes submerged in contaminated water. As the wax melts, it absorbs heat from the sun and increases the evaporation rate of the water. The evaporated water then condenses on a transparent dome structure and is collected as purified water. The experiment was conducted on a small scale in the laboratory as a low-cost alternative to desalination plants. Further improvements could enhance heat transfer and allow application at larger scales.

This document summarizes a research project that developed a low-cost evaporative cooler unit suitable for industrial environments in Sri Lanka. The unit uses both direct evaporative cooling and solid desiccant dehumidification to control temperature and humidity. Testing showed the unit was able to provide sufficient thermal comfort while only slightly changing relative humidity. Some design improvements were identified, such as using a larger evaporation chamber and improving airflow separation, but overall the evaporative cooling technology proved applicable to Sri Lanka's climate.
