INTRODUCTION
As we know that the war of yesterday was for land, today is for energy and
tomorrow is for water. A country of 1.2 billion needs equipment which is
energy efficient. As there is large scarcity of energy in our country so we as
an engineer has the prime duty to make energy efficient equipment.
While thinking in this direction we came to know that water and air cooler
are the basic equipment which are present in almost every household, so
we have tried to consist these two in a single unit, by using this as a single
unit we are not only reducing the space consumption but also reducing
the cost factor. When we are using water and air cooler as separate unit in
home, they consume 3 times more electricity as compare to the
equipment which contain them in single unit. This helps in saving cost as
well as energy.
COMPONENT REQUIRED
1.WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM
2.ELECTRICAL MOTOR
3.EVAPORATOR PADS
4.FAN
5.PUMP
6.WATER TANK
7.CABINET
8.TAP
9.KHAS-KHAS-GRASS
10.TANK
COMPONENT DESCRIPTION & PURPOSE
COMPONENT DESCRIPTION:
1.WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM : Water is distributed through small
holes provided in to the water traps od side & back panel , which
deliver equal amount of water to follow through the wetted pads.
2.ELECTRICAL MOTOR :To drive the fan
3.EVAPORATOR PADS: Installed on three sides of the desert cooler.
4.FAN : To pull the air through the wetted pads and supply the air to the
space to be cooled.
5.PUMP: Used for circulation of a water.
COMPONENT DESCRIPTION & PURPOSE
COMPONENT DESCRIPTION:
6.WATER TANK : Used as reservoir of water installed at the bottom of the
cooler.
7.CABINET: All the parts are enclosed in a decorative cabinet , generally
made of steel.
8.TAP:-10mm dia.,made of Brass metal
9.KHAS-KHAS- GRASS:The air which drought fan sucks from atmosphere is
cooled by this grass which has property to absorb water. It helps to increase
the efficiency of unit by providing the inlet air at the temperature already
lower than the ambient temperature. This air will further cooled inside the
unit. This Khas-Khas grass is attached to the three sides of the cooler.
10 .TANK : It is made up of GI sheet of 2L capacity. It is used for the purpose
of storing water which has to be moved around the heat exchanger by lifting
it with the help of submersible pump.
COMPONENT DESCRIPTION & PURPOSE
PURPOSE :
 This project helps in saving the energy as well as cost.
 The air may be sufficiently cooled by evaporative process to result a
considerable degree of summer comfort in climates of high dry bulb
temperature associated with low relative humilities.
 It gives more comfort at high dry bulb temperature & lower wet bulb
temperature and low relative humidity.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
HEAT EXCHANGER on the upper surface has inlet for fresh water and outlet for cool
water. The inlet water has temperature slightly more than that of the water spread
over the heat exchanger. The submersible pump lifts the water from the water tank
and move around the GI tank and thus the transfer of heat occurs. As we know that
heat is always transferred from high to low temperature and the water spread over
the heat exchanger is at low temperature, thus the inlet water while passing through
the heat exchanger gives heat to the water outside the heat exchanger and we get
the cold water from outlet of heat-exchanger and then cold water moves through
the copper pipe(which had 10mm dia.,no. of ring=9,ring dia.=3 inch.,gap b/w ring=2
inch), where further cooling take place.
Material Required
1. GI sheet 2 ltr. capacity
2. Iron strip 2 kg
3. Exhaust fan 1 piece
4. Motor pump 1 piece,25 watt
5. Tap(Brass metal) 1 piece,10mm dia
6. fan 200watt
7. Copper pipe 10ft. length
8. switch 2 piece
9. Pad(khash) 3 piece
10. Nuts,bolts,screws 25piece,25piece,18piece
respectively
11 Louvers(air inlet) 1 frame
12. Primer,paint 0.5 litr,o.5 litr.
Adiabatic efficiency of water cum air cooler
Ambient temp:-
Dry bulb temp. (DBT) = 25°c
Wet bulb temp. (WBT) = 23°c
Conditioned air:-
Dry bulb temp. (DBT) = 20°c
Wet bulb temp. (WBT) = 16°c
USES
 This project helps in saving the energy as well as cost.
 This idea is greatly helpful to the middle class family and poorer family.
LIMITATIONS
The desert cooler has its some limitations , under which it has to work .Following are the leading
limitations :
1.The lowest possible dry bulb temperature achieved by evaporating cooling is quit less.
2.The desert cooler are only successful where low wet bulb temp. and high dry bulb temp. occurs ;
in other words where the humidity of air is quit low and the temp. is sufficiently high (i.e.about
21 degree and below 8 , Dbt about 35 degree above.
3.It is not suitable for high humidity areas because during the cooling a moisture is added
resulting in increased level of humidity , which feels uncomfortable.
PRECAUTIONS
 The metal body should be painted timely otherwise it will corrode.
 If there is no water in the tank then the motor of pump will be damaged. So we should check the
water level in the tank regularly.
 The pads should be changed every year.
 Oiling and greasing should be done on the fan and pump once in every year.
 Check the proper earthing of the fan motor and pump motor before fittings the pin to avoid
shock.
 Check the water spray pipes, if leaking, replace it .
 Holes for water distribution system should be cleaned in alternating 4 or 5 month.
 The tank should be cleaned just after the season and coated with corrosion resisting paint like
red oxide or some other paint.
CONCLUSION
There is a great difference in the theoretical knowledge and actual
execution of any work. The theoretical knowledge is not sufficient for a
worker. The execution of this knowledge provides self-confident and
opportunities for success in future. In this way a project to say that
without this type of activities in a technical institution a student may be
graduated by not educated. A technical may launch an industry in future
if he is unemployed.

  • 3. INTRODUCTION As we know that the war of yesterday was for land, today is for energy and tomorrow is for water. A country of 1.2 billion needs equipment which is energy efficient. As there is large scarcity of energy in our country so we as an engineer has the prime duty to make energy efficient equipment. While thinking in this direction we came to know that water and air cooler are the basic equipment which are present in almost every household, so we have tried to consist these two in a single unit, by using this as a single unit we are not only reducing the space consumption but also reducing the cost factor. When we are using water and air cooler as separate unit in home, they consume 3 times more electricity as compare to the equipment which contain them in single unit. This helps in saving cost as well as energy.
  • 4. COMPONENT REQUIRED 1.WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM 2.ELECTRICAL MOTOR 3.EVAPORATOR PADS 4.FAN 5.PUMP 6.WATER TANK 7.CABINET 8.TAP 9.KHAS-KHAS-GRASS 10.TANK
  • 5. COMPONENT DESCRIPTION & PURPOSE COMPONENT DESCRIPTION: 1.WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM : Water is distributed through small holes provided in to the water traps od side & back panel , which deliver equal amount of water to follow through the wetted pads. 2.ELECTRICAL MOTOR :To drive the fan 3.EVAPORATOR PADS: Installed on three sides of the desert cooler. 4.FAN : To pull the air through the wetted pads and supply the air to the space to be cooled. 5.PUMP: Used for circulation of a water.
  • 6. COMPONENT DESCRIPTION & PURPOSE COMPONENT DESCRIPTION: 6.WATER TANK : Used as reservoir of water installed at the bottom of the cooler. 7.CABINET: All the parts are enclosed in a decorative cabinet , generally made of steel. 8.TAP:-10mm dia.,made of Brass metal
  • 7. 9.KHAS-KHAS- GRASS:The air which drought fan sucks from atmosphere is cooled by this grass which has property to absorb water. It helps to increase the efficiency of unit by providing the inlet air at the temperature already lower than the ambient temperature. This air will further cooled inside the unit. This Khas-Khas grass is attached to the three sides of the cooler. 10 .TANK : It is made up of GI sheet of 2L capacity. It is used for the purpose of storing water which has to be moved around the heat exchanger by lifting it with the help of submersible pump.
  • 8. COMPONENT DESCRIPTION & PURPOSE PURPOSE :  This project helps in saving the energy as well as cost.  The air may be sufficiently cooled by evaporative process to result a considerable degree of summer comfort in climates of high dry bulb temperature associated with low relative humilities.  It gives more comfort at high dry bulb temperature & lower wet bulb temperature and low relative humidity.

  • 10. WORKING PRINCIPLE HEAT EXCHANGER on the upper surface has inlet for fresh water and outlet for cool water. The inlet water has temperature slightly more than that of the water spread over the heat exchanger. The submersible pump lifts the water from the water tank and move around the GI tank and thus the transfer of heat occurs. As we know that heat is always transferred from high to low temperature and the water spread over the heat exchanger is at low temperature, thus the inlet water while passing through the heat exchanger gives heat to the water outside the heat exchanger and we get the cold water from outlet of heat-exchanger and then cold water moves through the copper pipe(which had 10mm dia.,no. of ring=9,ring dia.=3 inch.,gap b/w ring=2 inch), where further cooling take place.
  • 11. Material Required 1. GI sheet 2 ltr. capacity 2. Iron strip 2 kg 3. Exhaust fan 1 piece 4. Motor pump 1 piece,25 watt 5. Tap(Brass metal) 1 piece,10mm dia 6. fan 200watt 7. Copper pipe 10ft. length 8. switch 2 piece 9. Pad(khash) 3 piece 10. Nuts,bolts,screws 25piece,25piece,18piece respectively 11 Louvers(air inlet) 1 frame 12. Primer,paint 0.5 litr,o.5 litr.
  • 12. Adiabatic efficiency of water cum air cooler Ambient temp:- Dry bulb temp. (DBT) = 25°c Wet bulb temp. (WBT) = 23°c Conditioned air:- Dry bulb temp. (DBT) = 20°c Wet bulb temp. (WBT) = 16°c

  • 14. USES  This project helps in saving the energy as well as cost.  This idea is greatly helpful to the middle class family and poorer family.
  • 15. LIMITATIONS The desert cooler has its some limitations , under which it has to work .Following are the leading limitations : 1.The lowest possible dry bulb temperature achieved by evaporating cooling is quit less. 2.The desert cooler are only successful where low wet bulb temp. and high dry bulb temp. occurs ; in other words where the humidity of air is quit low and the temp. is sufficiently high (i.e.about 21 degree and below 8 , Dbt about 35 degree above. 3.It is not suitable for high humidity areas because during the cooling a moisture is added resulting in increased level of humidity , which feels uncomfortable.
  • 16. PRECAUTIONS  The metal body should be painted timely otherwise it will corrode.  If there is no water in the tank then the motor of pump will be damaged. So we should check the water level in the tank regularly.  The pads should be changed every year.  Oiling and greasing should be done on the fan and pump once in every year.  Check the proper earthing of the fan motor and pump motor before fittings the pin to avoid shock.  Check the water spray pipes, if leaking, replace it .  Holes for water distribution system should be cleaned in alternating 4 or 5 month.  The tank should be cleaned just after the season and coated with corrosion resisting paint like red oxide or some other paint.
  • 17. CONCLUSION There is a great difference in the theoretical knowledge and actual execution of any work. The theoretical knowledge is not sufficient for a worker. The execution of this knowledge provides self-confident and opportunities for success in future. In this way a project to say that without this type of activities in a technical institution a student may be graduated by not educated. A technical may launch an industry in future if he is unemployed.
