YAM BEAN
SEED RATE: 20-25 kg/ha . In India, a higher seed
rate, 50-70 kg/ha, is preferred.
PLANTING
The yam bean is grown principally from seed, but it
can be grown from sprouted roots saved from the
previous crop. It has been recommended that this
practice be followed to maintain desirable
characteristics in the plant.
SPACING : 15 x 15 cm
Manuring:
 For high yields, the application of a
12: 24: 12 NPK fertilizer at the rate of 300-400
kg/ha before planting has been recommended,
followed by 200 kg/ha of ammonium sulphate
when the plants begin to climb.
In addition, if the soil has been
heavily cropped it is suggested that it should
receive 10 t/ha of compost or FYM, about one
month before planting.
WATER MANAGEMENT
 Yam bean is grown as a rain-fed crop but one or two
irrigations particularly in the drier months promote tuber
development.
 Frequent irrigation with higher doses of fertilizer makes
tubers more succulent and reduces keeping quality.
 Normally there is no need to irrigate a June-July crop. In case
there is scarcity of rains, irrigation is necessary as yam bean
requires adequate moisture.
 For September sown crop, supplementary irrigation
increases tuberization.
YARD LONG BEAN
SEED RATE : The seed rate per hectare would be 10-
30 kg of seeds.
PLANTING AND SPACING
 Seeds are sown 2 cm deep direct into the rows. Climbing
beans are planted 30-50 cm apart in the row, with 2-3 m
between rows.
MANURING:
 The mixture of the fertilizer is such that 14N:14P:12K should
be sprayed along the rows @ 70 g/m2. And 50 mm of
fertilizer should be added to the land from where the seeds
are sown and the soil is covered.
 The crop is again supplied with the ratio of 50:50 of urea and
potassium sulfate mix of 5 g/m for each row every 4 weeks
Water management:
 Regularly, the water should be supplied to maintain the
moisture level in the soil.
 The watering frequency depends on the soil and the moisture
contained in it as the sand and clay soils absorb water soon
and do not have enough moisture retention capacity,
therefore, these soils need a regular water supply. And the
watering also depends upon the climatic conditions.
 Water stress cannot be handled by these plants, then the
yield drops down considerably. For better control of water
drip irrigation is good.
