Quiescence is a dormant period for embryos where growth is suppressed due to unsuitable germination conditions like lack of light, temperature, and moisture. In this phase, the embryo in seeds stops growing and cell division is halted. This allows the embryo to maintain stem cell populations and prevents premature germination so the seed can resume growth when conditions become favorable again. Quiescent centers are also found in root tips and allow roots to continue growing when returned to suitable conditions.
