2. purpose
• i am creating a genre based magazine on the genre of hip hop music,
with the purpose of entertaining people while also informing and
educating about the latest artists, concerts, and upcoming events.
This can include weekly gossip, new relationships within the hip hop
scene and artists who are just beginning their career. I will entertain
people by using images as well as including articles, Q&A's,
competitions to win things such as Spotify and youtube subscriptions,
links to discounts for the magazine and other columns of writing
about that weeks latest and most popular news The writing in my
magazine will coincide with the images and other assets by giving
information on upcoming events to educate the readers.
3. Form and genre
• i have been asked to create both a digital and online version of my magazine which means its able to be
viewed both online and real life and therefore can reach a much larger audience. my print copy will have a
matt front cover, this is so my magazine can look and feel worth the money as well as making my end
product more eye-catching due to the fact most magazines have a glossy cover and therefore shows my
magazine is not average and has something different to it. a matt front cover also creates a mature look to
my magazine which will relate to my younger generation audience as they are leave childhood and start
maturing. My magazine will have 30 pages, this is so my magazine is kept short and sweet to avoid loosing
the interest of my readers however, this leaves my enough room to put advertisements, competitions,
images and lots of articles into my magazine. The size of the magazine may change each month dependant
on the story and information i get. My digital magazine will be layed out differently to my paper one as this is
to attract a different section of my target audience. The title will be the boldest part of my magazine to
ensure people know what they are reading. I will have my main article and picture big the middle of the
website and then i will include other articles and assets underneath that. My layout will reflect the
importance of each story and this will mirror the type of things my audience want to see. The genre of my
magazine is hip hop, this is a genre that began in New York by African Americans and latino Americans in the
1970's. this genre is widely interchangeable with the genre rap as the meaning of hip hop is a rhythmic beat
with rapping and singing over the top, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping,
DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. This style relates to my target audience
as most the artists are young and rap about situations that people either can relate to or hope they can
relate to. this means their lyrics entice people and make them think about different things in life as well as
connoting different emotions.
4. content
• my magazine will include interviews with fans or journalists that can bring
something new to my magazine, weather this is information hot of the press or
gossip, my story's will be exclusive to my magazine therefore creating a read you
cant find anywhere else. as well as this there will be competitions included in my
magazine that allows people to win things such as Spotify subscriptions,
discounts on concert tickets and merchandise. my magazine will also include
Q&A's with artist's to get an insight into their life, asking questions that explain
their life styles, music and lyrics. my images will be bold and connected to my
genre, for example i will dress my models in typical clothes for the hip hop genre.
there will be links and barcodes to websites that are connected to my magazine
such as ticket websites, merchandise and a playlist that includes artists that are
spoken about in the magazine. there will be advertisements that link well with my
magazine like clothes brands and jewellery, the money made from this will be
reinvested into my magazine and help to fund it. Lastly, there will be other
information such as tour dates.
5. Target audience
• my primary target audience is the ages of 16- 35. this is due to the beat being fast
and exciting which mostly appeals to a younger audience as it makes you feel
excitement and energy. as well as this most hip hop artists are around this age
range and therefore their lyrics will be more relatable to the audience as they are
interested in the same things. A lot of my links will be online which means my
audience need to be able to navigate the internet and use my resources. My
secondary target audience are people from 35-42, this is because although these
people may not relate as much, they can still enjoy and appreciate the music
while reminiscing times when they were doing the same things. this means the
music will have an emotional connection with them as it will make them think
about the past and experiences they have had. My tertiary target audience will
be all other ages that decide they want to learn about this music. Due to my
magazine being both print and online, the older generations will find it easier to
read print as thats what they are used to, therefore making my magazine
accessible to everyone.
6. Recourses and personnel
• the recourses i will need for my project will be:
• a camera - this will allow me to take my pictures for my magazine
• camera equipment - a tripod and other equipment will help me make my photos look
professional as well as getting them just as i want them.
• photoshop app - this will allow me to edit my photos and pages of my magazine allowing me to
create my final product exactly how i envisioned and planned. as well as this i can edit the
colouring of my photos, for example making my photos darker to match the hip hop theme
• a computer - this will allow me to use all of my apps and help me speed up the process of my
product.
• my personnel required is:
• a camera man to take my photos and potentially edit them to match my theme of my hip hop
magazine
• a model to pose for my photos
• a make up artist to help create the aesthetic i need for my model to fit in with my magazine
7. Distribution and marketing methods
• i will use social media to my advantage to distribute and promote my magazine. seen as my target audience
is the younger generation, it seems fitting that i use social media, which is a big part of our lives, to show
people about my magazines and why they should buy it. if i used instagram for instance, i got big names to
model for and promote my magazine and show people the type of contents in my magazine which would
hook them in to find out more. as well as this i could use apps like Tik Tok which is popular among the ages
of 16-22 which would allow my magazine to reach a wide range of people whether they are die hard hip hop
fans or not. as well as this, social media is a good way to market my magazine as its a free way to reach a lot
of people. this means i would save a lot of money on publicity and can therefore spend that on making my
magazine more professional and luxurious. i would also use facebook to reach my slightly older audience, or
failing that they could use word of mouth to tell people who are interested about our magazine. because the
social media side of my marketing is free, i will have enough money to pay for adverts on buses, billboards
and shops around north London to alert people of the 'vibrant' scene thats occurring. i will be able to
distribute my print copy of my magazine in local supermarkets, corner shops and hairdressers as this is a
good way of 'wasting time' while you have to wait for something, leading to them becoming interested and
purchasing our magazine again. The younger generation are more likely to go into corner shops for food and
drinks therefore it will catch their eye as thy are browsing. my magazine would only be £3.90, meaning
teenagers are more likely to buy my magazine as it is affordable to buy weekly therefore giving my magazine
a better chance of survival.
