This document discusses the challenges of virtualization and how Symantec addresses them. It notes that virtualization amplifies existing IT challenges like storage management, high availability, and security. It also multiplies complexity and creates new compliance issues. However, Symantec is well-positioned to help customers address these challenges through innovations in virtual machine protection, data deduplication, disaster recovery solutions, and more. The document argues that Symantec solutions help customers realize the full benefits of virtualization by building IT architecture focused on information management rather than specific systems.
The Storage Hypervisor: The missing link for the Software Defined Datacenter Virsto Software
The concept of the software-defined datacenter (SDD) is gaining recognition, as IT moves away from infrastructure traditionally defined by hardware toward a more flexible infrastructure built around software and dynamic allocation of resources. In the SDD, all virtualized storage, server, networking and security resources required by an application can be defined by software and provisioned automatically. Virsto’s VM-centric storage hypervisor is purpose built to deliver software-defined storage: the missing link for storage agility, performance and efficiency to realize more agile IT.
VMware vSphere 4.1 provides significant enhancements to scalability, availability, security and manageability over vSphere 4.0. Key new features include Storage I/O Control to prioritize storage access, improved Storage Performance Reporting, Network I/O Control to prioritize network traffic, and Memory Compression to optimize memory usage. Enhancements deliver "cloud scale" with increased limits on VMs, hosts, clusters and more. Other improvements include faster vMotion, enhanced HA, expanded HCL and Active Directory integration. Overall, vSphere 4.1 delivers the capabilities needed for private and public cloud computing.

Vmware aims to provide a seamless computing environment through virtualization. It discusses the journey from physical to virtual systems, highlighting consolidation, containment and availability benefits. It outlines the key components of Vmware's virtual data center operating system (vSphere), including dynamic computing, power management, virtual switching, fault tolerance and disaster recovery. Finally, it discusses reasons for tier 1 application virtualization and customers' four phase adoption journey to seamless computing focused on cost efficiency, quality of service and business agility.
Virtualization allows multiple operating systems and applications to run on the same physical server at the same time. This increases hardware utilization and flexibility while reducing IT costs. VMware virtualization solutions can reduce energy costs by 80% through server consolidation and powering down unused servers without affecting applications or users. Virtualization makes hardware resources independent of operating systems and applications, treating them as single unified units that can be more easily deployed, maintained, and supported.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Editor's Notes
Speaker’s notesServer virtualization has fundamentally changed IT over the past 10 years. Since Vmware introduced the hypervisor 10 years ago, IT organizations have continued to virtualize workloads from physical servers to multiple virtual machines running on fewer physical servers.
As a result, storage for virtual environments have increased dramatically over the last few years. It’s estimated that Virtualization is tied to $12B of SAN storage in annual spend. This is not only a expensive proposition that will become cost prohibitive to extend virtualization into other environments, but the challenges described in the previous slide simply require a new paradigm shift as customers continue to increase their migration/adoption of Cloud Computing
1. Once server consolidation has occurred, the profile of Input / Output (I/O) that virtualized applications write to storage changes dramatically. From 1 app to one server to direct attached storage, the new model is up to dozens of virtual machines on 1 physical server, with each VM trying to write to storage without any coordination with each other. 2. Virtual machines are encapsulated and isolated, but they are all writing over to storage at the same time, the I/O gets extremely randomized as it writes to storage. That randomized I/O causes decrease in performance to the VM’s thereby impacting business SLA’s and customer experience.3. In order to compensate for the degraded performance, storage vendors have lead customers to believe that over-provisioning to increase spindle counts is the best way to increase I/O performance. As a result, this over-provisioning of storage creates an expensive storage infrastructure to support virtual environments.4. Several analysts, including Andrew Reichmann at Forrester, have calculated that all of the benefits realized through server virtualization have been consumed by this rampant growth in expenditure in storage. 5. But, in addition to performance degradation and the need to use an expensive storage infrastructure to deploy virtualization, virtual environments also require a new paradigm in storage management to allow for greater scale, more flexible provisioning, increased speed of deployment, and more granular management of VM’s.6. However, up until now, such a solution did not exist, and as a result, customers continue to pay this tax on virtualization.
