This document provides information on English verb tenses and their structures, including the present simple, present continuous, past simple, past continuous, present perfect, future with will, future with be going to, and using other tenses for future meaning. It includes the basic sentence structures for positive, negative, and interrogative forms of each tense, example sentences using common time expressions, and notes on formation of verb phrases and uses of each tense.

Tip! We don’t usually use the present
continuous with stative verbs.

8. Spelling of Verb + ING
For many verbs we make the ING form
by simply adding -ING to end of the verb.
eat - eating
speak - speaking
Verbs ending with -e
(exception of verbs ending in -ee and -ie)
hope - hoping
write - writing
Verbs ending with -ee
agree - agreeing
see - seeing

Change the -ie to -y and add -ING
tie - tying
Verbs ending with one vowel and one
consonant (with the exception of w,
x, and y)
For one syllable verbs
double the consonant and add -ING
sit - sitting
For two syllable verbs
answer - answering
offer - offering
If the 2nd syllable is stressed , double
the consonant and add ING
admit - admitting
begin - begining
