I.      Verb Tenses:

                   C. Verb to Be

            Present

     I              am                  They

     Examples:      I am very tired today.
                    I was happy yesterday.

     Question Form:

     Verb Be + Subject + rest of sentence
     Are          you     very tired today?
     Were         you     happy yesterday?

     Negative Form:

     Subject + Verb Be + not + rest of sentence
     I             am     not     tired today.
     I             was not        happy yesterday.



     B. Present Progressive:
            Indicates an action that is happening at the moment of speaking. (now,
            right now, at present, at this moment).

     Formation:

     I                    am

Example:       He is writing a letter now.
               We are having fun at this moment.

Questions Form:

Verb Be + Subject + ing form of verb + rest of sentence

Negative Form:

Subject + Verb Be + not + ing form of verb + rest of sentence
He            is     not     writing        a letter now.
We            are    not     having                  fun at this moment.


C. Past Progressive
       Indicates an action that was going on when another action took place.

Formation:

Example:       Tom was eating out last night.
               We were watching a horror movie last week.

Question Form:

Verb Be past + Subject + ing form of verb + rest of sentence
Was             Tom eating               out last night?

Negative Form:
Subject + Verb Be past + not + ing form of verb + rest of sentence.
Tom           was           not      eating          out last night.
We            were          not      watching        a horror movie last week?

D. Simple Present:
      Indicate an action that is habitual or customary. The basic form and S form
      of the verb is used with this verb tense.

E. Future Tense:

       Indicates an action that will happen some time in the future.
       There are two ways to form the future tense.

1.     I
       You
       He                       will    +      basic form of verb
       She

       They
       We

Example:          They will travel to Europe next week.

Question Form:

Will + Subject + verb in basic form + rest of sentence
Will    they           travel            to Europe next week.

Negative Form:

Subject + will + not + verb in basic form + rest of sentence.
They      will    not           travel        to Europe next week.



2.     I                        am + going to + basic form of verb

       He
       She                      is + going to + basic form of verb
       It

       They
       You                      are+ going to + basic form of verb

Example:          They are going to travel to Europe next week.

Question Form:

Verb Be + Subject + going to + verb in basic form + rest of sentence
Are          they going to           travel           to Europe next week?
Negative Form:

       Subject + Verb Be + not + going to + verb in basic form + rest of sentence
              They          are    not going to             travel        to Europe next week.

       F. Simple Past:
             Indicates an action that already happened. For the past tense regular and
             irregular verbs are used. (See a list of irregular verbs at the end of this
             section).

       Examples:      Carlos spoke to the dean about the class yesterday.

                              Irregular verb

                      Carlos studied hard for the test last night.

                              Regular verb

       Question Form:

       Did + Subject + verb basic form + rest of sentence
       Did    Carlos         speak          to the dean about the class yesterday?
       Did    Carlos         study          hard for the test last night?

       Negative Form:

       Subject + did + not + verb basic form + rest of sentence
       Carlos    did not             speak        to the dean about the class yesterday.
       Carlos    did not             study        hard for the test last night.

    G. Present Perfect:
           Indicates an action that happened at an indefinite time in the past or an
           action that was repeated several times in the past. The auxiliary verbs have
           and has and the past participle form of the verb are used to form this verb
           tense.

    3rd. person singular pronouns

G. Past Perfect:
        Indicates an action that took place in the past before another past action. The
auxiliary verb had and the past participle form of the verb is used to form this verb tense.

  • 3. I. Verb Tenses: C. Verb to Be Present I am They He You are She is We It Past I They He was You were She We It Examples: I am very tired today. I was happy yesterday. Question Form: Verb Be + Subject + rest of sentence Are you very tired today? Were you happy yesterday? Negative Form: Subject + Verb Be + not + rest of sentence I am not tired today. I was not happy yesterday. B. Present Progressive: Indicates an action that is happening at the moment of speaking. (now, right now, at present, at this moment). Formation: I am He + ing form of verb. She is It
  • 4. They You are + ing form of verb. We Example: He is writing a letter now. We are having fun at this moment. Questions Form: Verb Be + Subject + ing form of verb + rest of sentence Is he writing a letter now. Are we having fun at this moment. Negative Form: Subject + Verb Be + not + ing form of verb + rest of sentence He is not writing a letter now. We are not having fun at this moment. C. Past Progressive Indicates an action that was going on when another action took place. Formation: I He was + ing form of the verb. She It They You were + ing form of the verb We Example: Tom was eating out last night. We were watching a horror movie last week. Question Form: Verb Be past + Subject + ing form of verb + rest of sentence Was Tom eating out last night? Were you watching a horror movie last week? Negative Form: Subject + Verb Be past + not + ing form of verb + rest of sentence.
  • 5. Tom was not eating out last night. We were not watching a horror movie last week? D. Simple Present: Indicate an action that is habitual or customary. The basic form and S form of the verb is used with this verb tense. 3Rd. person singular He She verb basic form + s It Pronouns I You verb basic form They We Example: He speaks French very well They speak Italian well. Question Form: He She Does It I You Do They We Do/Does + Subject + Verb in basic form + rest of sentence Does he speak French very well? Do they speak Italian well? Negative Form: Subject + does/do + not + verb in basic form + rest of sentence He does not speak French very well.
  • 6. They do not speak Italian well. E. Future Tense: Indicates an action that will happen some time in the future. There are two ways to form the future tense. 1. I You He will + basic form of verb She It They We Example: They will travel to Europe next week. Question Form: Will + Subject + verb in basic form + rest of sentence Will they travel to Europe next week. Negative Form: Subject + will + not + verb in basic form + rest of sentence. They will not travel to Europe next week. 2. I am + going to + basic form of verb He She is + going to + basic form of verb It They You are+ going to + basic form of verb We Example: They are going to travel to Europe next week. Question Form: Verb Be + Subject + going to + verb in basic form + rest of sentence Are they going to travel to Europe next week?
  • 7. Negative Form: Subject + Verb Be + not + going to + verb in basic form + rest of sentence They are not going to travel to Europe next week. F. Simple Past: Indicates an action that already happened. For the past tense regular and irregular verbs are used. (See a list of irregular verbs at the end of this section). Examples: Carlos spoke to the dean about the class yesterday. Irregular verb Carlos studied hard for the test last night. Regular verb Question Form: Did + Subject + verb basic form + rest of sentence Did Carlos speak to the dean about the class yesterday? Did Carlos study hard for the test last night? Negative Form: Subject + did + not + verb basic form + rest of sentence Carlos did not speak to the dean about the class yesterday. Carlos did not study hard for the test last night. LIST OF IRREGULAR VERBS Here is a list of some common irregular verbs. You can also find the principal parts of irregular verbs in an English dictionary.
