History of GPS
• 1978- The first experimental Block-I GPS satellite was launched.
• 1983- After Soviet interceptor aircraft shot down the civilian airliner KAL 007
in restricted Soviet airspace, killing all 269 people on board, U.S. President
Ronald Reagan announced that the GPS system would be made available for
civilian uses once it was completed.
• 1985- Ten more experimental Block-I satellites had been launched to validate
the concept.
• 1989-On February 14, 1989, the first modern Block-II satellite was launched.
• 1991-The oldest GPS satellite still in operation was launched in August 1991.
• 1992-The 2nd Space Wing, which originally managed the system, was de-
activated and replaced by the 50th Space Wing in 1992.
• 1993-1994 By December 1993 the GPS system achieved initial operational
capability and a complete constellation of 24 satellites was in orbit by January
17, 1994.
• 2000-2004 In 2004, U.S. President George W. Bush updated the national
policy, replacing the executive board with the National Space-Based
Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Executive Committee.
• 2006 The most recent launch was on 17 November 2006.
“Why to choose this Project”
The idea of this project comes from the transport
system of our college. Which is very poorly
managed and all records are on paper works
which really not look good as an engineering
perspective. Transport Manager manage all
records on the paper or files with that he do not
have any system through which he can trace the
location of all the vehicle and can coordinate
them. Therefore we decided to develop such a
concept which can give this all facilities to our
college and our transport system become
advance in terms of technology.
Introduction
Vehicle Tracking system
Vehicle Tracking System combines the use of automatic vehicle
location in individual Vehicles with software that collects these
fleet data for a compressive picture of vehicle location. Modern
vehicle tracking system commonly use GPS (Global Position
System) technology for locating the vehicle. Vehicle information
can be viewed as electronic map.
GPS Tracking system
This device fits into the vehicle and captures the GPS location
information apart from other vehicle information at regular
intervals to a central server. The vehicle information includes
fuel, amount, engine, temperature, altitude etc .

DRAWBACKS
1. Signals can become degraded and the receiver
system may not provide location information .
The situations can occur in dense vegetation.
2. Large or tall buildings grouped closely together
can cause large multi path and fading errors that
may affect the ability to track offenders.
3. Signals can be lost when an offender is riding in a
car or other enclosed means of transportation.
4. Signal strength can become degraded by moisture
such as rainfall, fog, or snowfall.
GPS vs GSM
GPS GSM
GPS helps us to find the exact
location of the vehicle.
GSM only give the location
not the exact location.
GPS uses satellites to find the
location of the vehicle.
GSM uses base station to find
the location.
It is costly but effective. It is cheaper but less costly.
GPS can be used in any
geographical area on the earth.
GSM is only used where base
station are implemented.
It uses longitude and latitude
coordinates to find the
location.
It is used distance of the base
station from one other
More accurate Less Accurate
Better Technology Not better as compared to
GPS
Conclusion
Vehicle tracking systems becoming increasingly
important in large cities and it is more secured
than other systems. Now a day’s vehicle theft is
rapidly increasing, with this we can have a
good control in it. This technology can also help
to advance the system of transportation and
can be used in many organization for security
purpose and tracking purpose.
Future Scope
There Future of Vehicle Tracking System using GPS
in various fields such as
•Security Issues
•Military Purpose
•Navigation System
•Fuel Consumption
•Tracking Systems
