The urethra transports urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. It is divided into parts with different epithelium in men: the pre-prostatic, prostatic, membranous, and spongy urethra. The urethra has three layers - mucous, vascular, and muscular. It is surrounded by sphincter muscles that control the flow of urine. The urethra receives blood supply from various arteries and is innervated by nerves from the inferior hypogastric and pudendal plexuses. In females, the urethra extends from the bladder neck to the vulva and has a mucous layer with longitudinal folds and both longitudinal and circular
