Editor's Notes
I would like to begin with saying that Urbanization is a trend of moving cities forward in an environmentally friendly manner. (Picture 2)
The benefits of urbanization are compact development, cleaner living, and a higher education. With a compact development, there would be less farmland consumed for city living. Cleaner living would be a result of compact development, with less individual transportation and more public transportation there would be less emissions. In a strategically planned city, people living there would be more aware of their environment and other cities could learn by example. (Berg & Hager, 2007)
The problem is these cities are growing way too fast. People do not have enough time to educate themselves about the consequences of developments. (Berg & Hager, 2007)
The best practices are considered to be the award winning contributions to a city or town that positively effect the living environment during urbanization. They must improve the quality of life for people in the city and be the end result of different sections of society coming together to help. (DubaiAward, 2008) (Picture 1)
There will be a whole new infrastructure put in to help clean and recycle water. This structure will need maintenance and this will create jobs for the city. Along with now clean water, they will now be providing education on health and hygiene practices. (Picture 4)
The landfill system in South Africa has a strict landfill lifespan of 25 years and it is also considered a conservancy because of their vast environmental structure and technology. They even have monthly tours where children can see the whole facility. Also, they are so environmentally friendly that certain birds migrate there every year. (Dubai Award, 2008) (Picture 3)
