In the movie, Ikiru follows the life of Kanji Watanabe, an aging bureaucrat who wants to find purpose
to his life after his diagnosis of cancer. Watanabe does the uncommon and goes against the norm, in
order to follow his passion and not follow strictly what tradition would want. In this film, the
traditional family home is absent because of the main character being a widower. Since he maintains
the role of breadwinner he has an estranged relationship with his only child as well as a generational
gap. The Japanese are very observant of ancient traditions such as Buddhism and Shintoism. Ikiru,
which means to live is directed by Akira Kurosawa, is based in postwar Japan during their
reconstruction. Japan is slowly becoming more westernized adopting capitalism, and democracy.
From this movie I learned that Japan is very homogenous and the people share the same religion,
language, and ethnic background. Yet by my research I found there isn t a single country that is 100%
uniform and in Japan only 1 percent of the population is made up of non Japanese people, with the
largest minority being South Koreans. Japan is becoming very industrialized and reminds me of New
York City, and the setting of the movie mirrored my thoughts and took place in the city. The main

Despite the variety of genres that Philip Pullman has explored from historical fiction to fantasy which
have lead to a plethora of criticism, Pullman writes enchanting tales first and foremost for his audience
s enjoyment. In an interview discussing the teaching of children s literature Pullman humbly requests
to let the children enjoy the books before doing anything else, before counting semicolons, looking at
specific adjectives etc. His books are written to enchant, delight and beguile the read to be enjoyed

elements in each of his pieces, his works are for those who pick up his books despite their ability to

This experiment used beets to determine peroxidase production in stressed plants. The purpose of this
experiment was to test if the stressed plant would produce more peroxidase in a higher concentration
than the control plant. The stressor for this experiment was watering with salt water. This stressor was
chosen because it is a natural stressor to plants; especially along the coasts and where roads are salted
in winter such as the Midwest. The control plant was watered with plain tap water while the
experimental plant was watered with tap water plus salt. The salt water concentration was 1.2341
molar. After the two week stress period the stressed plant was much smaller, wilted, and shriveled
compared to the control plant. It also had less water content overall, which made the extraction
process somewhat more challenging. To test the peroxidase production in the plants several methods
were used, including: tissue printing, DOT blot assay, electrophoretic analysis, and a
spectrophotometric assay. It was concluded that the stressed plant did produce more peroxidase than
