Australia´s Coastal Erosion Processes
Coastal erosion is an area of large concern for the residents of eastern Australia. Two regions that are
heavily affected by erosion include the gold coast and the tweed coast. Erosion is caused when wind,
tides, currents, and waves move sand causing beaches to constantly change their shape. Rising sea
levels, storms, and human impacts result in a decrease in beach foreshore, and if proper measures are
not taken beaches will eventually disappear. The gold coast and its beaches have been heavily affected
by erosion. Some of the largest issues that the coast is currently facing includes increased erosion due
to the recent high frequency of storms, rising sea levels, and climate variability. The growing
population and increasing number of visitors who frequent the gold coast are putting pressure on the
beaches and increasing potential erosion. Various projects and plans have been created and proposed
in order to alleviate erosion impacts in the region. The Tweed River Sand Bypass Project was created
to establish and maintain a clear area for boats to navigate down the Tweed River, which is located on
the border of New South Wales and Queensland. When the river channel becomes blocked, the area is
dredged to maintain the structure and allow boats to continue to use the river. The project supplies
sand to southern gold coast beaches in an attempt to keep beaches nourished and decrease erosion.
The tweed river is an especially important site along the gold coast, as the

Final Exam Review Questions Solutions Guide You will probably want to PRINT THIS so you can

solutions given below. 1. Explain the difference between a population and a sample. In which of these
is it important to distinguish between the two in order to use the correct formula? mean; median;
mode; range; quartiles; variance; standard deviation. Solution: A sample is a subset of a population. A
population consists of every member of a particular group of interest. The variance and the standard
deviation require that we know whether we have a sample or a population. 2. The following numbers

Explain mathematically. Solution: (a) The total number of transfer students is 270. The total number
of students in the survey is 500. P(Transfer) = 270/500 = .54 (b) The total number of part time
students is 210. The total number of students in the survey is 500. P(Part Time) = 210/500 = .42 (c)
From the table we see that there are 100 students which are both transfer and part time. This is out of
500 students in the sample. P(transfer ∩ part time) = 100/500 = .20 (d) This is conditional probability
and so we must change the denominator to the total of what has already happened. There are 100
students which are both transfer and part time. There are 210 part time students. P(transfer | part time)
= 100/210 ≈ .4762 (e) P(part time | transfer) = 100/270 ≈ .3704 (f) The definition of independent is
P(A|B) = P(A). To test we ask if P(part time | transfer) = P(part time)? Is .3704 = .42? No, there for the
events are not independent. We could also test P(transfer | part time) = P(transfer). Is .4762 = .54?
Again, the answer is no. (g) For events to be mutually exclusive their intersection must be 0. In part c
we found that P(transfer ∩ part time) = 100/500 = .20. Therefore the events are not mutually
exclusive. 11. A shipment of 40 television sets contains 3 defective units. How many ways can a

Virginia Woolf s A Room of One s Own Essay
Virginia Woolf s A Room of One s Own
Missing works cited
In A Room of One s Own, Virginia Woolf ponders the plight of women throughout history. Woolf
reads the lives of women and concludes that if a woman were to have written she would have had to
overcome enormous circumstances (Woolf xi). Woolf s initial thesis is that a woman must have money
and a room of her own if she is to write fiction (Woolf 4). Throughout the book, however, she
develops other important conditions for artistic creation. Woolf mentions many nineteenth century
female writers in order to explain these conditions, but she does not mention Mary
Shelley. Woolf most likely excludes the author of Frankenstein because her writing contains
considerable male ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rejection and discouragement from family, friends, and society fills her life. Because the world will
not permit the expression of her genius, she eventually commits suicide. Woolf argues that like ?
Shakespeare?s sister,? any woman ?born with a gift for poetry in the sixteenth century was an
unhappy woman, a woman at strife against herself? (Woolf 50). Although the circumstances of female
writers greatly improve over the next 300 years, Woolf finds that ?even in the nineteenth century a
woman was not encouraged to be an artist. On the contrary, she was snubbed, slapped, lectured and
exhorted? (Woolf 55). Despite the great odds against her, a few women managed to disregard their
discouraging environments and write successfully. The conditions that they overcame amaze Woolf: ?
What genius, what integrity it must have required in face of all that criticism, in the midst of that
purely patriarchal society to hold fast to the thing as they saw it without shrinking? (Woolf 74).
Unlike most nineteenth century female writers, Mary Shelley is supported in her intellectual pursuits
throughout her life. Although society discourages female writers, her family surrounds her with
constant encouragement. Shelley comes from a background of famous radical writers. The political
and moral writings of her father, William Godwin, are extremely influential during the time. Her
feminist mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, writes the controversial book, A

Comparing Story Of An Hour And Lamb To The Slaughter
In the stories, The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin and Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl both
have a similar aspect in furthering the plot and creating an aesthetic impact on its target audience. In
the story, The Story of an Hour , Mrs. Mallard not only has heart trouble but her husband is
pronounced dead. Whereas, in Lamb to the Slaughter , Mary Maloney kills her husband after finding
out that he was leaving her, while she was still pregnant. Furthermore, what makes these stories
similar is having two female protagonist feeling strong emotions towards their husband s motives.
Given this fact, The Story of an Hour uses a gloomy exposition and depressing ending, whereas, Lamb
to the Slaughter begins in a calm exposition with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The beginning of the story, starts with the protagonist, Mary Maloney, who is said to be six months
pregnant is awaiting the arrival of her husband from work. Once Mr. Maloney arrives home, he
appears to not be enthusiastic to see his wife stating to her that, I m thoroughly exhausted. This might
show to the readers that he s either a hard working man or tired of his wife s antics. In the rising action
of the story, Mr. Maloney asks his wife for a drink and Mary offers him to eat supper with her. In
addition, during the climax of the story, Mr. Maloney proposes to his wife that she sit down before
supper is cooked. Dahl s choice of not writing down what Mr. Maloney says to his wife is to give the
illusion that he wants a divorce without mentioning it in detail. In the falling action, Mary is said to be
saddened by the news of her husband s decision to leave her, but her anger consumes her more which
drives her to use the leg of lamb needed for supper and hits him in the back of his head with it,
resulting in his death. Mary starts panicking since she was the wife of a detective and aware of the
consequences as well as possible death for her newborn baby. She puts the leg of lamb in a pan to
cook and fixes her makeup before leaving to go to the grocery store to buy potatoes and vegetables to
add in the supper. Lastly, in the resolution, the detectives receive a call

Human Rights And Natural Rights
Human rights are basically rights that individuals theoretically have within natural law. The quest for
happiness, life as well as liberty are for instances cited as natural rights by the Declaration of
Independence of the USA. As a matter of fact, human rights are deduced from natural law and occur
with or without the authority of any government. Human rights can be interpreted as incessant with
what were formerly identified as natural rights. This steadiness is not only historical, but theoretical.
This means that it is not merely that the convention of natural rights supposed is part of the old lead up
to modern human rights dissertation, but that the moral notion at the center of the latter is basically
that of a natural right.
On the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is also important to note that while the language used in the Universal Declaration might reflect
former articulations of Human Rights, it may not specifically invoke human nature, a Divine Being,
natural rights, or any other theoretical root for human rights. Since legal rights have law as their
foundation, it is correct to state that human rights have humankind as their basis. Many theorists have
proposed that the most relevant theories to the development of the human rights notion are natural
rights, religion, natural law, legal positivism, in addition to Marxism. The idea of individual rights rose
from the understanding that because reason is the key characteristic human beings possess, every
individual has the right to choose their specific authorities as well as to formulate their own laws. A
simple question, thus, is the valid authority and duty of government in the framework of human rights.
Natural law has unbiased, exterior existence. According to the supposition deduced from the ESS
(evolutionary stable strategy), it is human nature to use force. Moreover, the capacity to make ethical
judgments, the ability to differentiate good from evil , has instant evolutionary benefits. The advent of
rights within a political point of view is generally considered as rather recent, although any historic

Sonnet 13 Mood
During The Renaissance, a type of poetry came into existence, commonly known as sonnets. Poetry
during this time was very experimental in the ways of development, which brings differences and
some similarities. Specifically in Sonnet 13 and Sonnet 97 , both authored by William Shakespeare.
The tones and messages of the Sonnets are both delivered in different manners. A few of the
comparisons and contrasts of these sonnets consist of rhyme scheme, development, and ideas.
Among the comparisons are that both Sonnet 13 and Sonnet 97 have the rhyme scheme ABAB CDCD
EFEF GG with three quatrains and a single couplet, which is the structure of a Shakespearean sonnet.
However the sonnets both refer to their beloved, the way the messages were conveyed varied in their
tone. In Sonnet 13 the speaker wished ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the main differences is the tone of the Sonnets. In Sonnet 13 the tone conveyed more with an
instructive and straightforward tone towards the reader or beloved. Which contrasts from the tone in
Sonnet 97 that consists of a more depressed and nostalgic tone towards their beloved. The more
obvious difference is the theme/meaning of the Sonnet in a whole. Sonnet 13 speaks of his beloved
who is changing and is no longer who she once was. She is aging and the man thinks that it would be
wise for her to have a child to carry on her extravagant beauty, Against this coming end you should
prepare,/And your sweet semblance to some other give (ii. 3 4). The man is very straightforward with
the rest of his dialogue towards the woman. The meaning of Sonnet 97 is sending the message of how
he longs for his beloved to return. Without her he experiences a time similar to winter and
hopelessness, Yet this abundant issue seemed to me / But hope of orphans, and unfathered fruit (ii. 8
9). In this quote the speaker is comparing his hope to that of an orphaned child, which is often close to

The Life Of Sitting Bull
Early life
Sitting Bull was born in Dakota Territory. He was named Jumping Badger at birth, when he was
fourteen years old he accompanied a group of Lakota warriors (which included his father and his
uncle Four Horns) in a raiding party to take horses from a camp of Crow warriors. Jumping Badger
displayed bravery by riding forward and counting coup on one of the surprised Crow, which was
witnessed by the other mounted Lakota. Upon returning to camp his father gave a celebratory feast at
which he conferred his own name upon his son.

The name, Tȟatȟaŋka Iyotȟaŋka (Tatanka Iyotake), which in the Lakota language means Buffalo Bull
Sits Down , would later be abbreviated to Sitting Bull . Thereafter, Sitting Bull s father was known as
Jumping Bull. At this ceremony before the entire band, Sitting Bull s father presented his son with an
eagle feather to wear in his hair, a warrior s horse, and a hardened buffalo hide shield to mark his son s
passage into manhood as a Lakota warrior.
Red Clouds War
From 1866 to 1868, Red Cloud as a leader of the Lakota fought against US forces, attacking their forts
in an effort to keep control of the Powder River Country of Montana. In support of him, Sitting Bull
led numerous war parties against Fort Berthold, Fort Stevenson, and Fort Buford and their environs
from 1865 through 1868. By early 1868, the U.S. government desired a peaceful settlement to Red

The Theme Of Inequality In Chloe Neill s Veil
As humans, our natural instincts for categorization give us a sense of safety a sense of being in
control. Even from the beginning, children are trained to understand which blocks fit into which slots,
and where things are supposed to be put away. We find satisfaction in categorizing things even when
we don t realize we are doing it, such as with people. Thus creating the recent raging topic of
inequality. Not to say inequality has not been present since the beginning. However, it is only in
relatively recent times that people have started to stand up and fight for their well deserved rights.
These people are enervated by the lines drawn between themselves and others. Most of life consists of
stereotyping others to understand them with a simple and formative ideal, but people are much more
complex than a single idea. We should not be afraid of the differences that stand between one and
another, but rather recognize it and use it for mutual growth. By understanding why we are different,
we will no longer live in fear. In Chloe Neill s book, Veil, she combines the perpetual workings of this
fear and how the people affected by it react to its power. Akin to the inner workings of America, we all
follow the same universal ideal. Freedom. However, there is a percentage of us that are blindly content
with their own freedoms while forcing the repression of another. In spite of my enjoyment of the
moral message the further I stepped into this world of magic, I found my biggest

The Process Of Aging And Metabolism
The process of aging is one many dread and try to avoid. Arguably even worse than aging are age
related diseases that see their onset as people get older. Aging and metabolism have been found to be
closely connected. As individuals age, they usually gain weight because metabolism slows and their
body composition changes. According to a paper published in Nature, after age 45 the average person
loses about 10% of their muscle mass each decade and that mass is generally just turned into fat
because their muscles cannot metabolize and use the added calories being consumed. As a result,
consuming fewer calories has been proven to consistently extend lifespans and delay age related
diseases in evolutionary diverse organisms, meaning specialized multi cellular organisms such as
humans and animals. Several metabolites, molecules generated and used in intermediate steps of
metabolic reactions, have been shown to slow the aging process and are of great interest to researchers
because the mechanisms of how they do this is unknown. This project is a deeper dive into a specific
molecule that was of particular interest to the research team during a screening of many endogenous
molecules including metabolites and disease associated metabolites. In this study, α ketoglutarate (α
KG) is explored in order to determine if and how it effects the lifespan of adult Caenorhabditis
elegans, also known as roundworms. α KG is an important molecule in cellular respiration,
particularly the citric

Poor Clare Research Paper
The Poor Clare s Monastery in New Orleans, Louisiana take a lot of their ideals and lifestyle choices

ideals are living a life of prayer, community, and joy. They also believe that every sister should

the world, but each monastery is unique in its operations and daily life. The Poor Clare Sisters of New
Orleans are very typical ladies. They conduct Tuesday morning meanings in the library to make sure
the monastery is running smoothly. They discuss important issues, listen to each other s opinions, and
address needs of the monastery. On a lighter note, the sisters celebrate birthdays much like the rest of
society. They eat cake made from scratch, and the pictures suggest a sort of feast is held for the
occasion. They are encouraged to be themselves, and that can be shown through their artistic abilities
like music, crafting, cooking, or otherwise. The rose garden at the monastery is the perfect place to
relax and express themselves while being in the presence of the beauty of nature. The nuns in the

in the bombing. If it was mapped out they wouldn t have died, and the plan would have been more

Why Students Should Be A University Essay
Transferring to a four year college or university can be challenging depending on some factors, but it
is not an impossible task. Two year colleges like NOVA are working closely with four year
universities to ensure this transition is smooth and easy. Four year institutions and universities have
also recognized what a transfer student can bring to their schools. Most students attend community
college with a plan of transferring to a four year university. Community Colleges have great
opportunities for their students, with high resources, affordable expenses and small classrooms
students have many reasons for choosing community colleges as a freshman. Nonetheless, an
Associate Degree is designed to be a transition rather than an end goal. According to a study done by
Community College Research Center (CCRC), While 81 percent of entering community college
students indicate they want to earn a bachelor s degree or higher, only 33 percent of entering students
actually transfer to a four year institution within six years (CCRC,2016). There are many factors why
students should consider transferring to a university to at least earn a bachelor s Degree. The main
point being, four year university helps students continue a path of academic and career success. As a
student moves out of the two years community college experience, the academic opportunities become
broader.
Moreover, academic facilities at four year universities offer great resources. University advisors and

tragedy titled The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, by William
Shakespeare, deception formulates in result of multiple diverse events, and it plays an enormous role
in how the story plays out. There are many instances where Hamlet deceives another character, which
ultimately leads to the tragic end result of this play, which demonstrates to readers that seeking

The Horror Of Society In The Canterbury Tales By Chaucer

Horror of 14th Century society
I) Introduction
Seen in The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer we get a glimpse at the horror of society. This is
exemplified by the tale of the Friar and Summoner. They both tell a story about each other. The Friar
tells about the evils of a summoner while the summoner speaks about a Friar who is laughable.
However you see more of the wickedness is society in there prologue and interactions with each other.
In each story you can see the hatred the two hold for one another, the Friar tales of a summoner going
to hell while the summoner talks about a Friar who is seen as a joke to peasants and nobles.
II) A) The Prologues

She asks to pay the summoner to represent her to the archdeacon he demands twelve pence, a sum that
she thinks is too much as she believes she is not guilty of sinning. The summoner then demands her

summoner, the devil hears this and says to the summoner that he shall be in hell tonight. Then the
summoner and the devil disappeared into hell.
The entire point of the Friar s tale is to give the message that summoner s true home is hell. Even
going as far as to have the summoner meet the devil on his travels. The Friar is trying to sent the
message that the summoner is the worst type of person by having him meet the devil and go to hell
before he even dies due to a curse.
IV) C) The Summoner s Tale
The Summoner s Tale includes acts of perversion of office committed by the friar. These perversions
are mainly related to the Friar s vow of poverty such as pretence of praying (308) for those who gave
him offerings or food (305). Like the Summoner did earlier, the Friar interrupts the Summoner while
he is telling his tale. The Summoner continues his tale about a friar who stops at the home of a sickly
man named Thomas and attempts to get money from the ailing man and his wife. The Summoner
chronicles that the friar kissed her (Thomas wife) sweetly, chirping like a sparrow (307). The

Improving Quality And Standards Of Health Services
A recent study, by Baur, Fehr, Mayer, Pawlu Schaudel (2011) concluded that the growing demand in
health sector, resulted in rapid change in patients expectations. As a result, meeting patients
expectations, while maintaining standards and quality of healthcare service has been the crucial part in
health sector. However, maintaining the service standards does not only refer to increasing the number
of health professionals. Providing optimal care service to the patient, also contributes hugely in
improving quality and standards of health service. Taking this thing in consideration, in 1994,

who he loves. Uther sending Arthur away obviously influenced Arthur s life in a major way, even if
Arthur did not realize it at the time. Later, when Arthur had learned what had happened, he was
definitely confused, but soon calmed down and understood why. Seeing that his father made such a
large decision and stuck with it could have influenced how he rules as a king. Arthur had little time

Feedback tools need to be developed to increase the effectiveness of management and increase
management s accountability for their team s performance. Lastly, managers should remember the
golden rule in that they should treat Cast Members how they would want them to treat Guests. In
doing so, Disney will be striving to create a magical experience not only for its valued guests, but also
for the people that make it happen, the Cast.
Disney s Guest Expectations
Part of the Disney success is our ability to create a believable world of dreams that appeals to all age
groups. Walt Disney
Much of what differentiates Disney Theme Parks from their competitors is their ability to fully
immerse guests into a magical reality where the thoughts and concerns of the outside world are pushed
to the wayside. The core to the success of Disney Theme Parks is an outstanding commitment to guest
service and the Cast Member s ability and freedom to do whatever possible to make sure the guest s
stay is a positive and memorable one. This has become the expectation of Disney guests, as well as the
expectation of the organization as a whole. This expectation is difficult to maintain, especially
considering the high expectations of every individual guest that visits the parks. Even one bad

Financial Analysis On Financial Statements
Firm Performance: A Review of Financial Statements Financial crises like dot com bubble in the late
1990s and the housing market crash in the late 2000s prompted investors, and firms, to reconsider the
criticality of financial discipline. Transparency would be necessary to entice investors to spend money
again, thus a firm s financial statements became their marketing tools. These examples reinforce the
importance of financial statements relation to the financial wellbeing of a company. This paper serves
as a report on the purpose and aspects of the various financial statements and their applicability to the
performance of a firm.
Income Statements
Income statements, also known as profit and loss statements, are one of the core financial statements
publicly held firms must present annually. Serving as the officially documented representation of
company expenses and revenues over a set duration, the income statement is often used to assess the
performance and profitability of a company (Alvis, n.d.). The key expense items included on an
income statement are: general and administrative expenses (G A), research and development expenses,
depreciation/amortization, and cost of revenue (Alphabet, 2014).
The crucial importance behind the income statement lies in its ability to lay out the relevant facts in a
simplistic manner. By reviewing a company s income statement, one can instantaneously ascertain the
financial productivity of a company and their current

Distracted Driving In Kansas
You hear sirens whale as you drive along the highway you pull over to let the emergency vehicle pass
and maybe say a quick pray. The truth is it is common and depending on where you live you are likely
to see a car crash almost every day. In Kansas alone a car crash happens every 8.4 minutes. Yet even
with all the car crashes we see we still do not think it could happen to use. Every year, about 421,000
people are injured in crashes that have involved a driver who was distracted in some way.
http://distracteddriveraccidents.com/25 shocking distracted driving statistics/ Nearly 75% of those are
due to electronics and cell phones. Yet Even with all these car crashes The state of Kansas does not do

According to http://distracteddriveraccidents.com/25 shocking distracted driving statistics/ and A teen

or more passengers, they are 5x as likely. According to https://www.edgarsnyder.com/car

account for the most distraction while driving. According to
https://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/distracted_driving/ there are three types of distracted driving,
Visual: taking your eyes off the road; Manual: taking your hands off the wheel; and Cognitive: taking
your mind off of driving. texting while driving is especially dangerous because it combines all three
types of distraction. Yet Kansas does not do enough to stop phones as being a distraction. The reason
so many people are distracted by their phones even though there is a no texting while driving law is
because people can still use GPS, FaceTime, gaming apps, music apps, camera Apps, and can still call
people. http://www.theflynnlawfirm.com/flaws_kansas_missouri_texting_while_driving_laws/

communication which means they may not use a wireless communication device to manually type,
send or read a written communication, including, but not limited to, a text message, instant message or
electronic mail. The crux of this law problem is their enforceability. An officer could pull you over for
texting but you could say you were just using navigation or a game or your music app and since the
officer can not look at your phone and see your last text he can not say you were texting and driving
which is why Kansas needs to band the use of phones and not

More than 80% of the world s population lives in countries with emerging economies.
As we can see in Figure 1, the share of emerging markets in global output has increased from below
20% in the early 90 s, to more than 30% today. Considering the cost of living differences, the share of
emerging economies in world GDP already exceeds 45%, which is 13 percentage points higher than in

Elementary Hosts Popcorn At School
Every other Friday, Cascades Elementary hosts Popcorn Friday in their cafeteria. Volunteers come and
help make, bag, and distribute the salty snack to the classrooms. The line goes popcorn machine,
empty bags, bag folders and tape placers, finished bags, and classroom totes. However, to make the
line flow easily, the line might go; empty bags, popcorn machine, bag folders, tapers, finished bags in
lines of five, and the classroom totes that are brought up from the classroom. This suggested lineup
requires a volunteer to open bags and place them so the popcorn machine volunteer is able to reach the
paper bags, and possibly a couple more volunteers to ensure the supplies needed never runs out and
the flow is maintained. Unfortunately, many parents with nothing to do on Fridays do not come to
help.
On Popcorn Day, the volunteers meet at Cascades Elementary at eight in the morning in the cafeteria
after dropping their children off at school. One volunteer begins to heat up the popcorn maker and
make popcorn while a second volunteer sets out bags and a third sets out strips of tape along the side
of the table. After classes begin, the teacher selects two students to take the class mesh tote and the
popcorn money for the class to the cafeteria where the volunteers make the popcorn. Once the students
hand one of the volunteers the class tote and popcorn money, the students are able to go back to class.

The Social And Political Equality
Estranged by urban city life and disheartened by debilitating office work, the group in Deliverance
face a crisis in masculine identity at the beginning of the narrative. The horror and terror that the
group of four goes through shows the loss of control engendered by women s and homosexual rights
movement, which worsened (white heterosexual) masculine doubts about traditional gender roles. In
this respect, the choice to return to the wilderness is an endeavor to regain a former masculinity and
flee from the powerlessness, alienation, and self estrangement that came with American men s
habitual sense of who they were. Homosexual and women s movements were fighting for social and
political equality during the 1970s, when the book was published (Kimmel 180). The continued
motion for inclusion by women and homosexual advocates, marginalized since antiquity, became apart
of the economic, social, and political agenda of the United States. The eventual acceptance of these
freedoms altered the way in which American men had sought to test and demonstrate their manhood
and machismo (180). This meant that the transformation of the way people understood the qualities
traditionally associated with men left a permanent question mark over where American males (and in
relation it s females) stood in society. By the mid 1970s there were even promoters for liberating men
from their restrictive gender roles to which a politically incorrect American patriarchal culture had
assigned them

Foucault s Power And Power
Foucault s Power (Intro) Power, what is power? Is it a thing, something that can be controlled by a
person or group? Or is it an omnipresent force with no clear distinction of what it is and what it is not?
My views before being introduced to Foucault was: power is an attainable thing, but elusive. For
example, it is said one has power, if one has enough money. Another example I commonly hear is that,
the government (the State, the law, police) holds too much power. My final example is, in my opinion,
power is usually viewed as a negative thing by ones that do not hold said power. Michel Foucault, a
philosopher, challenged the traditional view of power by analyzing power in a series of studies of
different forms of power, such as from his books: Madness and Civilization, Discipline and Punish,
and The Order of Things to name a few. What Foucault found through his critical observations was
that the concept of power in the traditional views were too narrow and specific; not a singularity
composed of only negative aspects but also a dualism that leans much heavier on the side of positivity
than vice versa and an omnipresent force (or rather relationships) that may be used through various
techniques but not owned at all.
DEFINITION OF FOUCAULT S POWER

The Argument Of Skepticism Is All About
Maryam Quraishi
Professor Leon
Philosophy 101
August 9, 2016
Skepticism
In this paper, I will first discuss what the basic argument of skepticism is all about, then I will provide
the defense of the argument: the three cases (Judy/Trudy Case, Crow/Raven and Coke/ Generic Coke
case). After that, I will talk about the responses to the argument, specifically about the criticisms from
Descartes and Moore; how Moore feels that perceptual evidence is enough and we can reject premise
1 and how descartes thinks that we can rule out the skeptical scenarios with our evidence. Finally, I ll
provide my opinion on all this and what I personally have to say about skepticism, whether I am a
skeptic or not or if I reject either of the premises. The basic argument of skepticism goes somewhat
like this:
1. If you know that you re in class, then your evidence is good enough to rule out that you re in the
Matrix.
2. Your evidence (that you re in class) isn t good enough to rule out that you re in the Matrix.
3. Therefore, you don t know that you re in class.
If put into simpler words, what it s trying to say is that as long as you know something, your evidence
is good enough to rule out a claim, but if your evidence is not good enough, then doubts and
uncertainty may be present about your claim. Skepticism is all about attitude of doubt or uncertainty,
either in general or toward a specific thing, or to any doubtful attitude or

The Pros and Cons of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance...
Introduction
Today, electronic surveillance remains one of the most effective tools the United States has to protect
against foreign powers and groups seeking to inflict harm on the nation, but it does not go without a
few possessing a few negative aspects either. Electronic surveillance of foreign intelligence has likely
saved the lives of many innocent people through prevention of potential acts of aggression towards the
United States. There are many pros to the actions authorized under the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act (FISA) pertaining to electronic surveillance, but there are also cons. Looking at both
the pros and cons of electronic surveillance is important in understanding the overall effectiveness of
FISA. [1]
Definition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another pro of FISA, and the applicable amendments that followed, is the ability for electronic
surveillance to be conducted without a court order for a designated length of time to better facilitate
collection and streamline the process under USC. 1802, Sec 102. There are, of course, steps required
by high ranking officials, the President and Attorney General, which must be taken to conduct such
surveillance without a court order. Also, the criteria to conduct the surveillance is restricted
specifically to communications exclusively between foreign powers and must not include substantial
likelihood that the surveillance will acquire communications pertaining to a United States Person. [4]
While the appropriate legal process should always be followed, this provision is necessary at times to
bypass the lengthy legal process for obtaining a court order when time restrictions apply.
The Cons of FISAAuthorized Electronic Surveillance. FISA provides many other pros to the IC
pertaining to electronic surveillance as well, but it also brings with it multiple disadvantages. One of
the biggest cons is what the founders of the Act were trying so hard to avoid, the lack of balance.
Many people believe that the balance between the protection electronic surveillance provides and the
infringement on civil

Mrs. Dalloway By William Woolf
In Virginia Woolf s novel Mrs. Dalloway, Peter Walsh serves as the focalizer for a good portion of the
novel. It is through his eyes that we see Woolf s critiques of the British middle class notions of
propriety, success, and proper gender roles. Peter Walsh s thoughts and observations of Clarissa
Dalloway, Sally Seton and Richard Dalloway are all used to justify Woolf s critics on societies
pressures that cause people to become dependent on others to validate their place in society, lose who
they are and what they stand for in order to fit societies idea of women, as well as question their
masculinity because societal pressures force the association of success with characteristics of
masculinity. It is Peter s 5 year stay in India that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Peter talks of a radical Clarissa Dalloway who existed before his departure for India who would not
care if people saw her as a member of upper class society. Choosing to have Peter notice such a minor
detail about Mrs. Dalloway is one attempt of Woolf to criticize this idea of one becoming dependent
on other peoples perspective of them in British society. Although Peter picks up on Clarissa s attempt
to get him to believe she is now this women of upper class British society, he picks up on her change
in speech pattern and word choice which all point at this critique that she puts the desire for Peter and
others to believe she was truly a member of the upper class society over her own true independency
and beliefs.
Woolf s critiques on the societal pressures that force women to conform to societies ideal gender role
of women are another thing she uses Peter Walsh to expose. Peter s critical ways with Clarissa
Dalloway causes him to expose her conformity to societies idea of a woman. Calling her the perfect
hostess , Peter is calling out Clarissa s new role as just someone who throws parties hinting at the idea
that she has no other purpose to society other than to be the wife of Richard Dalloway (Woolf 7).
While present at Clarissa s party Peter realizes that these parties were all for [Richard Dalloway] and

What Is My Favourite Memory Essay
Whenever you come to visit me in this hospital whilst i lie in this isolated, vegetative state memories
of our times together come rushing back to me.
These memories that I reminisce about are now my life, the only thing I can really, truly connect to.
I recall my favourite days in winter when the light of the day had been replaced by the unrelenting
blackness of the night, and we would sit in the little café. Sitting there with mugs of coffee cupped
between our stone cold hands, the warmth of the fire against our backs slowly warming us up. The
sweet smell of the cinnamon buns that would diffuse around us which made it difficult to resist the
temptation of eating anymore, despite the guilt we should have probably felt about the huge amount
we had already consumed.
The Café that once was filled with our bursts of loud uncivilised laughter from which people could
have probably heard from outside in the pouring rain, was now from what I can imagine just a lifeless
café. There was nothing fancy about this café, no fancy furniture, no white etching upon the glass, the
feeling of just being there together and feeling as if we were away from the loud intimidating noises of
London s streets was what made this café so great.
I recall meeting in the little cafe that was not far from where we both lived every day after our long
days at work.
Whatever the circumstance both of us would be there, so we could reminisce for hours and hours
about our days of chaoticness and madness.
This was until ten years ago, the day when I didn t turn up to the café, the day my life ended
physically and yours mentally.
Now I lie here in this hospital bed, my thoughts disattached from what was my body.
I am locked inside this body which was once mine but now it is a stranger to me and I have no control
over what happens to it and when.
At first all I could feel was frustration. Frustration because I couldn t respond to you when you would
talk to me, your hand in what used to be my hand, your fingers entwined in fingers that are now
unknown to me for i now have no feeling in this body you call mine.
There s no word for how I feel. I am now frozen, unable to do anything but listen to the world go by,
trying to live everyones

The Respect of Soldier s Rank
In the U.S. Military services, rank determines who gets to tell whom what to do. The higher one s rank
the more authority (and responsibility) they have. U.S. Military personnel fall into one of three
categories: (1) enlisted members, (2) warrant officers, and (3) commissioned officers. Warrant officers
outrank all enlisted members, and commissioned officers outrank all warrant officers and enlisted
members.
Rank and pay grade are closely associated terms, but not quite the same. Pay grade is an
administrative classification, associated with a member s pay. Rank is a title and denotes the member s
level of authority and responsibility. An E 1 is the lowest enlisted pay grade. That person s rank is a

officers trace their insignia heritage to the British. Petty officers were assistants to the officers aboard
ship. The title wasn t a permanent rank and the men served at the captain s pleasure. Petty officers lost
their rank when the crew was paid off at the end of a voyage. In 1841, Navy petty officers received
their first rank insignia an eagle perched on an anchor. Ratings job skills were incorporated into the
insignia in 1866. In 1885, the Navy designated three classes of petty officers first, second and third.
They added chevrons to designate the new ranks. The rank of chief petty officer was established in
1894.During World War II, the Army adopted technician grades. Technicians of a given grade earned
the same pay and wore the same insignia as equivalent noncommissioned officers except for a small T
centered under the chevrons. Technicians, despite the stripes, had no command authority over troops.
This evolved into the specialist ranks, pay grades E 4 to E 7.

  • 2. Australia´s Coastal Erosion Processes Coastal erosion is an area of large concern for the residents of eastern Australia. Two regions that are heavily affected by erosion include the gold coast and the tweed coast. Erosion is caused when wind, tides, currents, and waves move sand causing beaches to constantly change their shape. Rising sea levels, storms, and human impacts result in a decrease in beach foreshore, and if proper measures are not taken beaches will eventually disappear. The gold coast and its beaches have been heavily affected by erosion. Some of the largest issues that the coast is currently facing includes increased erosion due to the recent high frequency of storms, rising sea levels, and climate variability. The growing population and increasing number of visitors who frequent the gold coast are putting pressure on the beaches and increasing potential erosion. Various projects and plans have been created and proposed in order to alleviate erosion impacts in the region. The Tweed River Sand Bypass Project was created to establish and maintain a clear area for boats to navigate down the Tweed River, which is located on the border of New South Wales and Queensland. When the river channel becomes blocked, the area is dredged to maintain the structure and allow boats to continue to use the river. The project supplies sand to southern gold coast beaches in an attempt to keep beaches nourished and decrease erosion. The tweed river is an especially important site along the gold coast, as the ... • 3. Normal Distribution Final Exam Review Questions Solutions Guide You will probably want to PRINT THIS so you can carefully check your answers. Be sure to ask your instructor if you have questions about any of the solutions given below. 1. Explain the difference between a population and a sample. In which of these is it important to distinguish between the two in order to use the correct formula? mean; median; mode; range; quartiles; variance; standard deviation. Solution: A sample is a subset of a population. A population consists of every member of a particular group of interest. The variance and the standard deviation require that we know whether we have a sample or a population. 2. The following numbers represent the weights in pounds of six 7year old ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Explain mathematically. Solution: (a) The total number of transfer students is 270. The total number of students in the survey is 500. P(Transfer) = 270/500 = .54 (b) The total number of part time students is 210. The total number of students in the survey is 500. P(Part Time) = 210/500 = .42 (c) From the table we see that there are 100 students which are both transfer and part time. This is out of 500 students in the sample. P(transfer ∩ part time) = 100/500 = .20 (d) This is conditional probability and so we must change the denominator to the total of what has already happened. There are 100 students which are both transfer and part time. There are 210 part time students. P(transfer | part time) = 100/210 ≈ .4762 (e) P(part time | transfer) = 100/270 ≈ .3704 (f) The definition of independent is P(A|B) = P(A). To test we ask if P(part time | transfer) = P(part time)? Is .3704 = .42? No, there for the events are not independent. We could also test P(transfer | part time) = P(transfer). Is .4762 = .54? Again, the answer is no. (g) For events to be mutually exclusive their intersection must be 0. In part c we found that P(transfer ∩ part time) = 100/500 = .20. Therefore the events are not mutually exclusive. 11. • 4. Virginia Woolf s A Room of One s Own Essay Virginia Woolf s A Room of One s Own Missing works cited In A Room of One s Own, Virginia Woolf ponders the plight of women throughout history. Woolf reads the lives of women and concludes that if a woman were to have written she would have had to overcome enormous circumstances (Woolf xi). Woolf s initial thesis is that a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction (Woolf 4). Throughout the book, however, she develops other important conditions for artistic creation. Woolf mentions many nineteenth century female writers in order to explain these conditions, but she does not mention Mary Shelley. Woolf most likely excludes the author of Frankenstein because her writing contains considerable male ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rejection and discouragement from family, friends, and society fills her life. Because the world will not permit the expression of her genius, she eventually commits suicide. Woolf argues that like ? Shakespeare?s sister,? any woman ?born with a gift for poetry in the sixteenth century was an unhappy woman, a woman at strife against herself? (Woolf 50). Although the circumstances of female writers greatly improve over the next 300 years, Woolf finds that ?even in the nineteenth century a woman was not encouraged to be an artist. On the contrary, she was snubbed, slapped, lectured and exhorted? (Woolf 55). Despite the great odds against her, a few women managed to disregard their discouraging environments and write successfully. The conditions that they overcame amaze Woolf: ? What genius, what integrity it must have required in face of all that criticism, in the midst of that purely patriarchal society to hold fast to the thing as they saw it without shrinking? (Woolf 74). Unlike most nineteenth century female writers, Mary Shelley is supported in her intellectual pursuits throughout her life. Although society discourages female writers, her family surrounds her with constant encouragement. Shelley comes from a background of famous radical writers. The political and moral writings of her father, William Godwin, are extremely influential during the time. Her feminist mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, writes the controversial book, A ... • 5. Comparing Story Of An Hour And Lamb To The Slaughter In the stories, The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin and Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl both have a similar aspect in furthering the plot and creating an aesthetic impact on its target audience. In the story, The Story of an Hour , Mrs. Mallard not only has heart trouble but her husband is pronounced dead. Whereas, in Lamb to the Slaughter , Mary Maloney kills her husband after finding out that he was leaving her, while she was still pregnant. Furthermore, what makes these stories similar is having two female protagonist feeling strong emotions towards their husband s motives. Given this fact, The Story of an Hour uses a gloomy exposition and depressing ending, whereas, Lamb to the Slaughter begins in a calm exposition with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The beginning of the story, starts with the protagonist, Mary Maloney, who is said to be six months pregnant is awaiting the arrival of her husband from work. Once Mr. Maloney arrives home, he appears to not be enthusiastic to see his wife stating to her that, I m thoroughly exhausted. This might show to the readers that he s either a hard working man or tired of his wife s antics. In the rising action of the story, Mr. Maloney asks his wife for a drink and Mary offers him to eat supper with her. In addition, during the climax of the story, Mr. Maloney proposes to his wife that she sit down before supper is cooked. Dahl s choice of not writing down what Mr. Maloney says to his wife is to give the illusion that he wants a divorce without mentioning it in detail. In the falling action, Mary is said to be saddened by the news of her husband s decision to leave her, but her anger consumes her more which drives her to use the leg of lamb needed for supper and hits him in the back of his head with it, resulting in his death. Mary starts panicking since she was the wife of a detective and aware of the consequences as well as possible death for her newborn baby. She puts the leg of lamb in a pan to cook and fixes her makeup before leaving to go to the grocery store to buy potatoes and vegetables to add in the supper. • 6. Human Rights And Natural Rights Human rights are basically rights that individuals theoretically have within natural law. The quest for happiness, life as well as liberty are for instances cited as natural rights by the Declaration of Independence of the USA. As a matter of fact, human rights are deduced from natural law and occur with or without the authority of any government. Human rights can be interpreted as incessant with what were formerly identified as natural rights. This steadiness is not only historical, but theoretical. This means that it is not merely that the convention of natural rights supposed is part of the old lead up to modern human rights dissertation, but that the moral notion at the center of the latter is basically that of a natural right. On the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is also important to note that while the language used in the Universal Declaration might reflect former articulations of Human Rights, it may not specifically invoke human nature, a Divine Being, natural rights, or any other theoretical root for human rights. Since legal rights have law as their foundation, it is correct to state that human rights have humankind as their basis. Many theorists have proposed that the most relevant theories to the development of the human rights notion are natural rights, religion, natural law, legal positivism, in addition to Marxism. The idea of individual rights rose from the understanding that because reason is the key characteristic human beings possess, every individual has the right to choose their specific authorities as well as to formulate their own laws. A simple question, thus, is the valid authority and duty of government in the framework of human rights. Natural law has unbiased, exterior existence. According to the supposition deduced from the ESS (evolutionary stable strategy), it is human nature to use force. Moreover, the capacity to make ethical judgments, the ability to differentiate good from evil , has instant evolutionary benefits. The advent of rights within a political point of view is generally considered as rather recent, although any historic study regarding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Sonnet 13 Mood During The Renaissance, a type of poetry came into existence, commonly known as sonnets. Poetry during this time was very experimental in the ways of development, which brings differences and some similarities. Specifically in Sonnet 13 and Sonnet 97 , both authored by William Shakespeare. The tones and messages of the Sonnets are both delivered in different manners. A few of the comparisons and contrasts of these sonnets consist of rhyme scheme, development, and ideas. Among the comparisons are that both Sonnet 13 and Sonnet 97 have the rhyme scheme ABAB CDCD EFEF GG with three quatrains and a single couplet, which is the structure of a Shakespearean sonnet. However the sonnets both refer to their beloved, the way the messages were conveyed varied in their tone. In Sonnet 13 the speaker wished ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the main differences is the tone of the Sonnets. In Sonnet 13 the tone conveyed more with an instructive and straightforward tone towards the reader or beloved. Which contrasts from the tone in Sonnet 97 that consists of a more depressed and nostalgic tone towards their beloved. The more obvious difference is the theme/meaning of the Sonnet in a whole. Sonnet 13 speaks of his beloved who is changing and is no longer who she once was. She is aging and the man thinks that it would be wise for her to have a child to carry on her extravagant beauty, Against this coming end you should prepare,/And your sweet semblance to some other give (ii. 3 4). The man is very straightforward with the rest of his dialogue towards the woman. The meaning of Sonnet 97 is sending the message of how he longs for his beloved to return. Without her he experiences a time similar to winter and hopelessness, Yet this abundant issue seemed to me / But hope of orphans, and unfathered fruit (ii. 8 9). Jumping Badger displayed bravery by riding forward and counting coup on one of the surprised Crow, which was witnessed by the other mounted Lakota. Upon returning to camp his father gave a celebratory feast at which he conferred his own name upon his son. Continued.. The name, Tȟatȟaŋka Iyotȟaŋka (Tatanka Iyotake), which in the Lakota language means Buffalo Bull Sits Down , would later be abbreviated to Sitting Bull . Thereafter, Sitting Bull s father was known as Jumping Bull. At this ceremony before the entire band, Sitting Bull s father presented his son with an eagle feather to wear in his hair, a warrior s horse, and a hardened buffalo hide shield to mark his son s passage into manhood as a Lakota warrior. Red Clouds War From 1866 to 1868, Red Cloud as a leader of the Lakota fought against US forces, attacking their forts in an effort to keep control of the Powder River Country of Montana. • 9. The Theme Of Inequality In Chloe Neill s Veil As humans, our natural instincts for categorization give us a sense of safety a sense of being in control. Even from the beginning, children are trained to understand which blocks fit into which slots, and where things are supposed to be put away. We find satisfaction in categorizing things even when we don t realize we are doing it, such as with people. Thus creating the recent raging topic of inequality. Not to say inequality has not been present since the beginning. However, it is only in relatively recent times that people have started to stand up and fight for their well deserved rights. These people are enervated by the lines drawn between themselves and others. Most of life consists of stereotyping others to understand them with a simple and formative ideal, but people are much more complex than a single idea. We should not be afraid of the differences that stand between one and another, but rather recognize it and use it for mutual growth. By understanding why we are different, we will no longer live in fear. In Chloe Neill s book, Veil, she combines the perpetual workings of this fear and how the people affected by it react to its power. Akin to the inner workings of America, we all follow the same universal ideal. Freedom. However, there is a percentage of us that are blindly content with their own freedoms while forcing the repression of another. • 10. The Process Of Aging And Metabolism The process of aging is one many dread and try to avoid. Arguably even worse than aging are age related diseases that see their onset as people get older. Aging and metabolism have been found to be closely connected. As individuals age, they usually gain weight because metabolism slows and their body composition changes. According to a paper published in Nature, after age 45 the average person loses about 10% of their muscle mass each decade and that mass is generally just turned into fat because their muscles cannot metabolize and use the added calories being consumed. As a result, consuming fewer calories has been proven to consistently extend lifespans and delay age related diseases in evolutionary diverse organisms, meaning specialized multi cellular organisms such as humans and animals. Several metabolites, molecules generated and used in intermediate steps of metabolic reactions, have been shown to slow the aging process and are of great interest to researchers because the mechanisms of how they do this is unknown. This project is a deeper dive into a specific molecule that was of particular interest to the research team during a screening of many endogenous molecules including metabolites and disease associated metabolites. In this study, α ketoglutarate (α KG) is explored in order to determine if and how it effects the lifespan of adult Caenorhabditis elegans, also known as roundworms. α KG is an important molecule in cellular respiration, particularly the citric ... Two year colleges like NOVA are working closely with four year universities to ensure this transition is smooth and easy. Four year institutions and universities have also recognized what a transfer student can bring to their schools. Most students attend community college with a plan of transferring to a four year university. Community Colleges have great opportunities for their students, with high resources, affordable expenses and small classrooms students have many reasons for choosing community colleges as a freshman. Nonetheless, an Associate Degree is designed to be a transition rather than an end goal. According to a study done by Community College Research Center (CCRC), While 81 percent of entering community college students indicate they want to earn a bachelor s degree or higher, only 33 percent of entering students actually transfer to a four year institution within six years (CCRC,2016). She curses the summoner, the devil hears this and says to the summoner that he shall be in hell tonight. Then the summoner and the devil disappeared into hell. The entire point of the Friar s tale is to give the message that summoner s true home is hell. Even going as far as to have the summoner meet the devil on his travels. The Friar is trying to sent the message that the summoner is the worst type of person by having him meet the devil and go to hell before he even dies due to a curse. IV) C) The Summoner s Tale The Summoner s Tale includes acts of perversion of office committed by the friar. These perversions are mainly related to the Friar s vow of poverty such as pretence of praying (308) for those who gave him offerings or food (305). Like the Summoner did earlier, the Friar interrupts the Summoner while he is telling his tale. The Summoner continues his tale about a friar who stops at the home of a sickly man named Thomas and attempts to get money from the ailing man and his wife. The Social And Political Equality Estranged by urban city life and disheartened by debilitating office work, the group in Deliverance face a crisis in masculine identity at the beginning of the narrative. The horror and terror that the group of four goes through shows the loss of control engendered by women s and homosexual rights movement, which worsened (white heterosexual) masculine doubts about traditional gender roles. In this respect, the choice to return to the wilderness is an endeavor to regain a former masculinity and flee from the powerlessness, alienation, and self estrangement that came with American men s habitual sense of who they were. Homosexual and women s movements were fighting for social and political equality during the 1970s, when the book was published (Kimmel 180). The continued motion for inclusion by women and homosexual advocates, marginalized since antiquity, became apart of the economic, social, and political agenda of the United States. The eventual acceptance of these freedoms altered the way in which American men had sought to test and demonstrate their manhood and machismo (180). This meant that the transformation of the way people understood the qualities traditionally associated with men left a permanent question mark over where American males (and in relation it s females) stood in society. By the mid 1970s there were even promoters for liberating men from their restrictive gender roles to which a politically incorrect American patriarchal culture had assigned them ... • 32. Foucault s Power And Power Foucault s Power (Intro) Power, what is power? Is it a thing, something that can be controlled by a person or group? Or is it an omnipresent force with no clear distinction of what it is and what it is not? My views before being introduced to Foucault was: power is an attainable thing, but elusive. For example, it is said one has power, if one has enough money. Another example I commonly hear is that, the government (the State, the law, police) holds too much power. My final example is, in my opinion, power is usually viewed as a negative thing by ones that do not hold said power. Michel Foucault, a philosopher, challenged the traditional view of power by analyzing power in a series of studies of different forms of power, such as from his books: Madness and Civilization, Discipline and Punish, and The Order of Things to name a few. What Foucault found through his critical observations was that the concept of power in the traditional views were too narrow and specific; not a singularity composed of only negative aspects but also a dualism that leans much heavier on the side of positivity than vice versa and an omnipresent force (or rather relationships) that may be used through various techniques but not owned at all. DEFINITION OF FOUCAULT S POWER I will use this section to elaborate on each of the five points that according to Clare O Farrell s, a scholar at QUT (Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia), key concepts page, on her website ... • 33. The Argument Of Skepticism Is All About Maryam Quraishi Professor Leon Philosophy 101 August 9, 2016 Skepticism In this paper, I will first discuss what the basic argument of skepticism is all about, then I will provide the defense of the argument: the three cases (Judy/Trudy Case, Crow/Raven and Coke/ Generic Coke case). After that, I will talk about the responses to the argument, specifically about the criticisms from Descartes and Moore; how Moore feels that perceptual evidence is enough and we can reject premise 1 and how descartes thinks that we can rule out the skeptical scenarios with our evidence. Finally, I ll provide my opinion on all this and what I personally have to say about skepticism, whether I am a skeptic or not or if I reject either of the premises. The basic argument of skepticism goes somewhat like this: 1. If you know that you re in class, then your evidence is good enough to rule out that you re in the Matrix. 2. Your evidence (that you re in class) isn t good enough to rule out that you re in the Matrix. 3. Therefore, you don t know that you re in class. If put into simpler words, what it s trying to say is that as long as you know something, your evidence is good enough to rule out a claim, but if your evidence is not good enough, then doubts and uncertainty may be present about your claim. Skepticism is all about attitude of doubt or uncertainty, either in general or toward a specific thing, or to any doubtful attitude or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Pros and Cons of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance... Introduction Today, electronic surveillance remains one of the most effective tools the United States has to protect against foreign powers and groups seeking to inflict harm on the nation, but it does not go without a few possessing a few negative aspects either. Electronic surveillance of foreign intelligence has likely saved the lives of many innocent people through prevention of potential acts of aggression towards the United States. There are many pros to the actions authorized under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) pertaining to electronic surveillance, but there are also cons. Looking at both the pros and cons of electronic surveillance is important in understanding the overall effectiveness of FISA. [1] Definition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another pro of FISA, and the applicable amendments that followed, is the ability for electronic surveillance to be conducted without a court order for a designated length of time to better facilitate collection and streamline the process under USC. 1802, Sec 102. There are, of course, steps required by high ranking officials, the President and Attorney General, which must be taken to conduct such surveillance without a court order. Also, the criteria to conduct the surveillance is restricted specifically to communications exclusively between foreign powers and must not include substantial likelihood that the surveillance will acquire communications pertaining to a United States Person. [4] While the appropriate legal process should always be followed, this provision is necessary at times to bypass the lengthy legal process for obtaining a court order when time restrictions apply. The Cons of FISAAuthorized Electronic Surveillance. FISA provides many other pros to the IC pertaining to electronic surveillance as well, but it also brings with it multiple disadvantages. One of the biggest cons is what the founders of the Act were trying so hard to avoid, the lack of balance. Many people believe that the balance between the protection electronic surveillance provides and the infringement on civil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Mrs. Dalloway By William Woolf In Virginia Woolf s novel Mrs. Dalloway, Peter Walsh serves as the focalizer for a good portion of the novel. It is through his eyes that we see Woolf s critiques of the British middle class notions of propriety, success, and proper gender roles. Peter Walsh s thoughts and observations of Clarissa Dalloway, Sally Seton and Richard Dalloway are all used to justify Woolf s critics on societies pressures that cause people to become dependent on others to validate their place in society, lose who they are and what they stand for in order to fit societies idea of women, as well as question their masculinity because societal pressures force the association of success with characteristics of masculinity. It is Peter s 5 year stay in India that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Peter talks of a radical Clarissa Dalloway who existed before his departure for India who would not care if people saw her as a member of upper class society. Choosing to have Peter notice such a minor detail about Mrs. Dalloway is one attempt of Woolf to criticize this idea of one becoming dependent on other peoples perspective of them in British society. Although Peter picks up on Clarissa s attempt to get him to believe she is now this women of upper class British society, he picks up on her change in speech pattern and word choice which all point at this critique that she puts the desire for Peter and others to believe she was truly a member of the upper class society over her own true independency and beliefs. Woolf s critiques on the societal pressures that force women to conform to societies ideal gender role of women are another thing she uses Peter Walsh to expose. Peter s critical ways with Clarissa Dalloway causes him to expose her conformity to societies idea of a woman. Calling her the perfect hostess , Peter is calling out Clarissa s new role as just someone who throws parties hinting at the idea that she has no other purpose to society other than to be the wife of Richard Dalloway (Woolf 7). • 36. What Is My Favourite Memory Essay Whenever you come to visit me in this hospital whilst i lie in this isolated, vegetative state memories of our times together come rushing back to me. These memories that I reminisce about are now my life, the only thing I can really, truly connect to. I recall my favourite days in winter when the light of the day had been replaced by the unrelenting blackness of the night, and we would sit in the little café. Sitting there with mugs of coffee cupped between our stone cold hands, the warmth of the fire against our backs slowly warming us up. The sweet smell of the cinnamon buns that would diffuse around us which made it difficult to resist the temptation of eating anymore, despite the guilt we should have probably felt about the huge amount we had already consumed. The Café that once was filled with our bursts of loud uncivilised laughter from which people could have probably heard from outside in the pouring rain, was now from what I can imagine just a lifeless café. There was nothing fancy about this café, no fancy furniture, no white etching upon the glass, the feeling of just being there together and feeling as if we were away from the loud intimidating noises of London s streets was what made this café so great. I recall meeting in the little cafe that was not far from where we both lived every day after our long days at work. Whatever the circumstance both of us would be there, so we could reminisce for hours and hours about our days of chaoticness and madness. This was until ten years ago, the day when I didn t turn up to the café, the day my life ended physically and yours mentally. Now I lie here in this hospital bed, my thoughts disattached from what was my body. I am locked inside this body which was once mine but now it is a stranger to me and I have no control over what happens to it and when. At first all I could feel was frustration. Frustration because I couldn t respond to you when you would talk to me, your hand in what used to be my hand, your fingers entwined in fingers that are now unknown to me for i now have no feeling in this body you call mine. There s no word for how I feel. I am now frozen, unable to do anything but listen to the world go by, trying to live everyones ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
