WHAT IS UNPACKING OF MELCs?
• Is a technique teachers can utilize to create simpler learning
targets.
• It is called DECONSTRUCTING or UNWRAPPING
• It is a process of breaking down student learning outcomes
into component parts to identify life-long transferable
learning skills
• Taking a deeper dive into the content that will be taught.
STEPS IN UNPACKING LEARNING
COMPETENCIES
• First, choose a Learning Competency out of
the Most Essential Learning Competencies.
Example:
Demonstrate ways to manage puberty-
related health issues and concerns.

• Second, identify the Target Skills.
Example:
Demonstrate ways to manage puberty-
related health issues and concerns.
Target Skills are in terms of verb in the chosen learning
competency

• Third, identify the Pre-requisite Skills.
Example:
Demonstrate ways to manage puberty-

Pre-requisite Skills is determined using Bloom’s Taxonomy

Unpacking MELCs Technique

WHAT IS UNPACKING OF MELCs? • Is a technique teachers can utilize to create simpler learning targets. • It is called DECONSTRUCTING or UNWRAPPING • It is a process of breaking down student learning outcomes into component parts to identify life-long transferable learning skills • Taking a deeper dive into the content that will be taught.
  • 3. STEPS IN UNPACKING LEARNING COMPETENCIES • First, choose a Learning Competency out of the Most Essential Learning Competencies. Example: Demonstrate ways to manage puberty- related health issues and concerns.
  • 4. STEPS IN UNPACKING LEARNING COMPETENCIES • Second, identify the Target Skills. Example: Demonstrate ways to manage puberty- related health issues and concerns. Target Skills are in terms of verb in the chosen learning competency
  • 5. STEPS IN UNPACKING LEARNING COMPETENCIES • Third, identify the Pre-requisite Skills. Example: Demonstrate ways to manage puberty- related health issues and concerns. Pre-requisite Skills is determined using Bloom’s Taxonomy
  • 6. Bloom’s Taxonomy- is a set of three hierarchical models used to classify educational learning objectives into levels of complexity and specificity. STEPS IN UNPACKING LEARNING COMPETENCIES
  • 7. STEPS IN UNPACKING LEARNING COMPETENCIES Example: Demonstrate ways to manage puberty-related health issues and concerns. Pre-requisite Skills Target Skills
  • 8. STEPS IN UNPACKING LEARNING COMPETENCIES • Fourth, develop Learning Objectives out of the Pre-requisite skills.. REMEMBER (define, duplicate, list, memorize, repeat, state) List down the different puberty-related health issues and concerns.
  • 9. STEPS IN UNPACKING LEARNING COMPETENCIES • Fourth, develop Learning Objectives out of the Pre-requisite skills.. UNDERSTAND (classify, describe, discuss, explain, identify, locate, recognize, report, select, translate) Describe each of the different puberty-related health issues and concerns.
  • 10. STEPS IN UNPACKING LEARNING COMPETENCIES • Fifth, develop Learning Objectives out of the Target skills.. APPLY (execute, implement, solve, use, demonstrate, interpret, operate, schedule, sketch ) Implement the different ways to manage puberty- related health issues and concerns.
  • 11. STEPS IN UNPACKING LEARNING COMPETENCIES LEARNING OBJECTIVES: REMEMBER -List down different puberty-related health issues and concerns. UNDERSTAND -Describe each of the different puberty- related health issues and concerns. APPLY-Implement the different ways to manage puberty-related health issues and concerns.
