Step-by-Step Procedure
1. Preparethe Surface
•Choose a sturdy paper or canvas for your base; heavy, textured paper works well for this technique.
2. Apply the Underlayer
•Use bright, contrasting colors to create your underlayer. Fill the surface with these colors using bold strokes,
layering them until the paper is entirely covered.
•Press firmly as you apply these colors to ensure they form a thick layer that will show through the top layer.
3. Add the Top Layer
•Choose a darker color (often black works well) to cover the entire surface, going over your bright underlayer.
•Press down firmly and apply a thick layer so the colors underneath are fully hidden.
4. Draw Your Design by Scratching
•Use your scraping tool to scratch into the top layer, creating designs by removing sections of the black layer
to reveal the colors beneath.
•Start lightly and then increase pressure to adjust the amount of color revealed.
•Try varying lines, patterns, and textures to create a rich, detailed design.
5. Finishing Touches
•Add extra layers of color if needed to emphasize certain areas, or scratch additional details if needed.
•Optionally, spray the finished piece with a fixative to prevent smudging.
