Unit 5 – Task 1 – Working to a Brief – Evaluation

Evaluating allows the creators to analyse the whole process of a project and reflect on what
went well and what didn’t during the production. This can enable the creators to address any
areas of weakness and improve on them as well as praise themselves for their strengths.
During this project my team and I (Liam, Dylan, Ashley and Nicole) created four different
videos that were shown before each award at the City of Westminster Staff Awards 2016. The
videos featured interviews and a title screen introducing the award winner and what award they
had won. We also helped to produce and film the award ceremony and ensured it ran smoothly.
Once Pat Squires had given us the brief tasking us with this project, we started work
immediately by holding a meeting where we allocated job roles between our group members
and discussed our action plan and schedule to ensure we could complete the project on time. I
lead the meeting by organising the paperwork and creating a spread sheet that tracked the
progress of the filming for the interviewees. I created two draft emails; one for the long service
award and another for the excellence award which made the emailing process easier as we could
just copy and paste the emails which saved a significant amount of time. Ashley and I then split
the email addresses and emailed all the interviewees asking when they were available to film so
we could create the videos. We had many difficulties contacting the interviewees initially as a
lot of the members of staff didn’t reply even after multiple messages. After we informed James
about this he fixed the problem and then a lot of people began to reply and we were able to
arrange interview slots and start to record the interviews. Team members Dylan, Nicole and
Liam were rarely present throughout this process,which put extra pressure on Ashley and I and
meant that we had to film the interviews on our own. This lead to us being pushed for time and
nearly being unable to complete all the interviews on time. However, by putting in extra hours
and coming in to college on our days off we managed to complete the interviews.
Once Ashley and I had filmed all of the interviews we began to edit them on the iMacs. I
completed the rough edit before showing the team and Pat to see if they liked the style of the
video. Pat requested that we add music to the final video and said that the videos were good so
far and to continue. I edited the videos fully and we were offered assistance by an editor to help
us finish the edit in time for the awards and to deal with the legal constraints we faced. He
added music that was copyright free to ensure we wouldn’t have any problems with legal issues
and added a title screen as well as checked the edit we had already completed.

The target audience for our videos were the staff members that will be in attendance at the Staff
Awards Ceremony. The ages ranged from 25- 60+ so our content had to be respectfulof the
award winners and appropriate for the age groups present on the day. We included tasteful and
positive comments from the interviewees that presented the college and the award winner in an
upbeat and good light.
We showed the finished videos to Pat Squires, our client, who said “the videos were short and
sweet and were shot and edited to a high quality that portrayed what the college’s working
atmosphere is like.” She then said the videos could’ve been improved by “including cutaway
shots of the award winner working in their job role but despite this they were still of a high
standard that met her expectations.”
The videos strengths are a result of including all the positive, funny and light-hearted comments
made by the interviewees that made the videos interesting and enjoyable to watch. The music
and fairly fast paced editing improved the viewing experience and ensured that when they were
played at the Award Ceremony the videos wouldn’t drag on. However,I agree with what Pat
said and think that adding the cutaway shots of the award winners working would improve the
videos and would’ve made them more interesting to watch.
I am happy with the overall technical elements in the videos but would have preferred to include
cutaway footage as it’s what the client wanted and I think it would’ve improved the quality of
the videos.
Once we had finished the videos, we then produced and filmed the Staff Awards Ceremony. I
was allocated the role of floor manager that required me to ensure everyone on the day knew
what they had to do and could complete their roles. I walked around to see if anyone needed any
help and was on hand to offer it if they did. I kept spare batteries with me in case the camera
battery died but thankfully they all remained charged. The awards ceremony ran smoothly as we
rehearsed the show multiple times so everyone was aware of their job role and carried it out to
the best of their abilities.
The client said that she was happy with the event as “it ran smoothly and met her expectations.
The videos we created and the way we worked on the day showed confidence and good
communication skills which led to highly executed videos for the awards ceremony.” Pat said
the awards ceremony could be improved by “adding the cutaways to the videos as it would’ve
enhanced the quality of the show.”

I contributed to this project by organising the interviews and contacting the interviewees
multiple times as well as filming and editing the interviews with Ashley. Without our
contribution to this project it wouldn’t have been completed as the other members of the group
rarely showed up.
I think that I worked well during this project as I completed the work on time because I tried to
be organised and motivated to complete the project to a standard that the client would be happy
with.
If I were to do this project again, I wouldn’t choose to do it with certain members of my group
as they gave me a lot of stress and didn’t complete their work without taking a large amount of
time and having to be asked multiple times. However,if I had to complete this project with the
same group again I would take more control and organise them to do their allocated work, as
this would’ve ensured we finished the project on time.
Overall, I am pleased with my contribution to the project as I think that I performed well. I just
wish members of the team were more dedicated and motivated so they could complete the work
they were allocated, which would’ve enabled us to complete the project sooner.

Unit 5 – Evaluation

  • 1. By Chelsie Brandrick Page 1 Unit 5 – Task 1 – Working to a Brief – Evaluation By Chelsie Brandrick Evaluating allows the creators to analyse the whole process of a project and reflect on what went well and what didn’t during the production. This can enable the creators to address any areas of weakness and improve on them as well as praise themselves for their strengths. During this project my team and I (Liam, Dylan, Ashley and Nicole) created four different videos that were shown before each award at the City of Westminster Staff Awards 2016. The videos featured interviews and a title screen introducing the award winner and what award they had won. We also helped to produce and film the award ceremony and ensured it ran smoothly. Once Pat Squires had given us the brief tasking us with this project, we started work immediately by holding a meeting where we allocated job roles between our group members and discussed our action plan and schedule to ensure we could complete the project on time. I lead the meeting by organising the paperwork and creating a spread sheet that tracked the progress of the filming for the interviewees. I created two draft emails; one for the long service award and another for the excellence award which made the emailing process easier as we could just copy and paste the emails which saved a significant amount of time. Ashley and I then split the email addresses and emailed all the interviewees asking when they were available to film so we could create the videos. We had many difficulties contacting the interviewees initially as a lot of the members of staff didn’t reply even after multiple messages. After we informed James about this he fixed the problem and then a lot of people began to reply and we were able to arrange interview slots and start to record the interviews. Team members Dylan, Nicole and Liam were rarely present throughout this process,which put extra pressure on Ashley and I and meant that we had to film the interviews on our own. This lead to us being pushed for time and nearly being unable to complete all the interviews on time. However, by putting in extra hours and coming in to college on our days off we managed to complete the interviews. Once Ashley and I had filmed all of the interviews we began to edit them on the iMacs. I completed the rough edit before showing the team and Pat to see if they liked the style of the video. Pat requested that we add music to the final video and said that the videos were good so far and to continue. I edited the videos fully and we were offered assistance by an editor to help us finish the edit in time for the awards and to deal with the legal constraints we faced. He added music that was copyright free to ensure we wouldn’t have any problems with legal issues and added a title screen as well as checked the edit we had already completed.
  • 2. By Chelsie Brandrick Page 2 The target audience for our videos were the staff members that will be in attendance at the Staff Awards Ceremony. The ages ranged from 25- 60+ so our content had to be respectfulof the award winners and appropriate for the age groups present on the day. We included tasteful and positive comments from the interviewees that presented the college and the award winner in an upbeat and good light. We showed the finished videos to Pat Squires, our client, who said “the videos were short and sweet and were shot and edited to a high quality that portrayed what the college’s working atmosphere is like.” She then said the videos could’ve been improved by “including cutaway shots of the award winner working in their job role but despite this they were still of a high standard that met her expectations.” The videos strengths are a result of including all the positive, funny and light-hearted comments made by the interviewees that made the videos interesting and enjoyable to watch. The music and fairly fast paced editing improved the viewing experience and ensured that when they were played at the Award Ceremony the videos wouldn’t drag on. However,I agree with what Pat said and think that adding the cutaway shots of the award winners working would improve the videos and would’ve made them more interesting to watch. I am happy with the overall technical elements in the videos but would have preferred to include cutaway footage as it’s what the client wanted and I think it would’ve improved the quality of the videos. Once we had finished the videos, we then produced and filmed the Staff Awards Ceremony. I was allocated the role of floor manager that required me to ensure everyone on the day knew what they had to do and could complete their roles. I walked around to see if anyone needed any help and was on hand to offer it if they did. I kept spare batteries with me in case the camera battery died but thankfully they all remained charged. The awards ceremony ran smoothly as we rehearsed the show multiple times so everyone was aware of their job role and carried it out to the best of their abilities. The client said that she was happy with the event as “it ran smoothly and met her expectations. The videos we created and the way we worked on the day showed confidence and good communication skills which led to highly executed videos for the awards ceremony.” Pat said the awards ceremony could be improved by “adding the cutaways to the videos as it would’ve enhanced the quality of the show.”
  • 3. By Chelsie Brandrick Page 3 I contributed to this project by organising the interviews and contacting the interviewees multiple times as well as filming and editing the interviews with Ashley. Without our contribution to this project it wouldn’t have been completed as the other members of the group rarely showed up. I think that I worked well during this project as I completed the work on time because I tried to be organised and motivated to complete the project to a standard that the client would be happy with. If I were to do this project again, I wouldn’t choose to do it with certain members of my group as they gave me a lot of stress and didn’t complete their work without taking a large amount of time and having to be asked multiple times. However,if I had to complete this project with the same group again I would take more control and organise them to do their allocated work, as this would’ve ensured we finished the project on time. Overall, I am pleased with my contribution to the project as I think that I performed well. I just wish members of the team were more dedicated and motivated so they could complete the work they were allocated, which would’ve enabled us to complete the project sooner. Word Count: 1155.
