needs;

communication meet our physical and
instrumental needs
Communication meets our physical needs by helping
us maintain physical and psychological well-being;
our instrumental needs by helping us achieve short- and long-term
goals;
our relational needs by helping us initiate, maintain, and terminate
relationships; and our identity needs by allowing us to present
ourselves to others in particular ways.
20-03-2022 KNC 3
Difficult is the communication process with
older patients
The communication process in general is complex and can be further
complicated by age. One of the biggest problems physicians face
when dealing with older patients is that they are actually more
heterogeneous than younger people.
20-03-2022 KNC 4
Communication tips to the Vulnerable groups
1. Allow extra time for older patients
2. Avoid distractions.
3. Sit face to face
4. Maintain eye contact
5. Listen
6. Speak slowly, clearly and loudly.
7. Use short, simple words and sentences
8. Stick to one topic at a time
9. Simplify and write down your instructions
10. Use charts, models and pictures.
11. Frequently summarize the most important points
12. Give patients an opportunity to ask questions and express themselves

IMPORTANCE OF PATIENT TEACHING
Effective teaching has a significant impact on patient health and
safety, as well as hospital readmission rates. Educating patients
effectively can also improve your satisfaction as a nurse because you
know you impacted someone’s quality of life.
20-03-2022 KNC 6
Benefits of patient teaching
Prevention of obesity, diabetes, or heart disease.
During the recovery process and before any major medical procedure,
patients need to know what to expect.
We are reducing the possibility of complications by providing patients with
information about medications and lifestyle modifications and self-
monitoring tools such as glucose meters and blood pressure monitors.
20-03-2022 KNC 7
Benefits of patient teaching cont..
• Patients are less likely to be readmitted to the hospital.
• They are gaining self-sufficiency by retaining independence.
• Patient education helps them understand the importance of
maintaining a healthy weight, seeking medical care during
illness, and taking medications as prescribed
20-03-2022 KNC 8
Purpose of patient education
• Patient Education Engages Patients in Their Health Care. These
materials educate and promote shared decision-making based on
medical evidence, clinical recommendations, and patient preference.
Engaging patients in their medical care and treatment decisions often
reduces costs and leads to better outcomes.
• Patient education aims to provide adequate and relevant clinical
information with the goal of increasing the understanding of illness
conditions and health-promoting behaviors (Seyedin, Goharinezhad,
Vatankhah, & Azmal, 2015). The need for patient education has been
widely recognize
20-03-2022 KNC 9
Role of nurse in patient teaching
Patient Teaching
Nurse can perform patient Teaching when it is required.
This could be more fruitful if it is planned properly after the
assessment, nurse understands the clients educational background,
his perception about health , illness, his disease condition and overall
his knowledge.
20-03-2022 KNC 10
Best way to teach patient education
This includes avoiding medical jargon, breaking down information or
instructions into small concrete steps, limiting the focus of a visit to
three key points or tasks, and assessing for comprehension by using
the teach back cycle. Printed information should be written at or
below sixth-grade reading level.
