2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

use in the days building up to my magazine
releasing. This plan takes up to 4 weeks and within
this plan I have set tasks for what my staff should do
each day in order to make sure that my magazine is
released perfectly so it looks professional and will
hopefully cause people to buy it.

9. I am going to make a Facebook page for my chosen magazine as this will be a cheap alternative to
advertising above the line thoughtTV adverts etc because I will not have the capital to fund it.
The price to advertise of Facebook for a day is £5, however, this may only get you 5-30 clicks. The way in
which advertising works on Facebook is the more money you pay, the more people see your advert.
Cost Per Click (CPC) – the cost for 1 click to your website
Cost Per Mille (CPM) – the cost for 1,000 impressions, or views of your ad

12. Hello, how are you?
I’m very good thanks, how your day been going?
It been going well mate, yourself?
Yeah not too bad thanks
It’s a week now until your album releases, what was your favourite song to make and why?
Goats and brogues because I like the beats, it gave me a chance to express my feelings on my favourite animal goats and my favourite shoe, brogues.
Interesting, how long did it take you to make the album?
About 2 years as I had to write my own lyrics and make sure everything was mastered and perfect for when I release it to my fans.
Oh wow, so does that mean a tour is in the making?
Oh yes! Id love to go on tour!A world tour! Seeing all my fans from across the world and showing them an experience that they will never forget. Like, I’m in there head day and night for
ages.
Perfect! So does that mean aV.I.P ticket for me then? (laughing)
Maybe…(laughing) I'm sure we can sort something out
I'm a happy man (laughing) so what type of people do you listen to or look up to in the music industry and why?
Well It depends what mood I'm in really, if I'm sad then ill put some drake ,partynextdoor and asap rocky but if I'm ready to do something big like if I'm about to go on stage then ill have
someone like future orTory Lanez to get me buzzing and ready to go out on stage and perform to my fans making sure that they are having an amazing time as well as me. At the
moment the person I look up to in the music industry is Justin Bieber, I feel like he is just killing the game right now and is having the time of his life while doing it.
Okay, fair enough, I agree to be fair… So who really helped you to become who you are today?
I would probably say my family, I know that’s the most common answer but its true. If it wasn’t for my family wouldn’t be sitting here today doing an interview with you today. Fact. My
father especially believed that I had a talent in rapping and just helped me along my way deal with all the problems that occurred in my life and he would give me a very mature answer to
help me come across well and succeed in the music business.
Perfect answer (laughing) I'm sure hell be proud when listening to this interview, I mean that’s if he even looks at this interview (laughing)
(laughing) No, I'm sure he will look at this but maybe not today or tomorrow (laughing) actually he’ll probably just forget about it (laughing)
(laughing) Well if you are watching this M.C. Chiznle’s dad, then hello my names Harry and I'm talking to your brilliant son and he has just rated you extremely highly
(laughing) I'm sure he’ll be happy with that Harry (laughing)
Well.. I think this Interview is over, it was nice talking to you M.C. Chaz and ill see you when thoseV.I.P tickets come through the door (laughing)
Yes! I’ll we get them as soon as possible (laughing)
Thank you
Cheers Harry, its been a pleasure.

14. Colour Scheme – 808
Orange
The colour orange connotes a gold fill of the magazine. The reason I used this colour was because
my genre for the magazine is hip-hop/rap and will contain artists who love diamonds, gold and
showing off all of their money.
Black
The colour black was used to contrast with the gold so it llooked luxury and gave off a very hip-
hop/rap feel. I also makes the magazine stand out from all the others because they use colours like
white and red to grab peoples attention.
15.
16. First of all I had to set up a canvas in A4 size. I then created a
background by using the ‘Gradient tool’ under the ‘Bucket
Tool’ icon. I also had to create a bleed(a border around the
edge of the page) using the ‘RulerTool’.
I added on cover lines to the right and left hand
size of my page.To do this I made sure I used the
ruler tool and I used the text tool.
17. The next step I had to do was make the
barcode. I file placed the barcode in from the
conventions folder and then I imported all my
social media logos. To resize the social media
logos I had to hold down shift and resize from
a corner so the image did not pixelate.
I then had to create a background rectangle
shape and fill it in black with the bucket tool. I
then used the text tool to write in the name of
my magazine. I added a few filters on the text.
18. I then used the ‘Quick SelectionTool’
to crop the background out of the
main image and resized the image by
holding down shift and resizing from
the corner.
I then had to create the main headline.
For the ‘EXCLUSIVE’ bit I added a box in
the background and filled it in black. For
the text ‘MC CHIZNLE’ I added a black
stroke around the orange writing.
19. I then had to create the puff promotion. I used
the internet to find a sticker shape and used
the bucket tool to fill in the shape I then
added text and placed in an image of a ticket.
I used the text tool to add in
the strapline of my
magazine.
20. To make a front cover;
1. Go to file then new, then international paper to make an a4 canvas.
2. Then choose a background using the bucket and gradient tool
3. I choose the orange and saved it to my swatches.
4. For the masthead I used the shape tool to create a rectangle just like ‘XXL’s’ and used the
bucket tool to make it black.
5. I placed in a barcode from the internet and resized it making sure I held down shift otherwise
the barcode would pixelate and I made a small rectangle shape to place the barcode in. I had to
make sure I moved my layers around so you could see the barcode
6. I then placed in social media icons and I then made sure I resized them from the corner holding
down shift. To make sure they were the same size4 I used the ruler tool.
7. To create my cover lines I had to use the text tool and I had to go window character to resize
and transform the text.
8. To create the puff promotion I found a blank sticker off of the internet and added in writing and
a picture
9. To make the picture I crop out the background using the quick selection tool and using quick
mask mode with the brush tool and used the phrase ‘ white reveals, black conceals’
21. I made the DPS on InDesign as the software is easy to use to create 2
pages and columns for the interview.
1. I had to set up the document creating 2 pages and 3mm bleed.
1. To create the pull quote I had to use the tool which you can see
from the screenshot to the right.
1. I had to first type up the interview on MicrosoftWord and then I
pasted it over. I used the text box tool to create columns, pasted
the interview in and then used the little red box which you can see
from the screenshot I clicked on it and dragged the rest of the
interview over.
22.
23. When I finished my work, I went through my pitch and all other bits of work just checking
for misspelt words and defects in the slides. For example I proof read everything in my
work to make sure it made sense so they the person marking my paper will understand
what I'm writing about.
I proof read over everything in
my dps an made sure it was all
perfect for marking.
24. The main thing I changed was my draft interview, the reason I changed this because it
didn't’t make much sense which furthermore made the magazine look extremely
unprofessional because no customer would be satisfied with a magazine if the content in
the slide didn't’t make sense and wasn’t very educational.
