2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Date of publication; First thing to do is to set up a date of publication. This is when the magazine will be
published to the public.
Managing the schedule; An extremely important step when it comes to the production. This is the schedule in
which your magazine will be published.
Editorial and budgetary decision; This involves the magazines editorial team assembling and deciding what
topics will be covered in the next issue of the magazine.
Content Acquisition; Important because without content there cannot be a magazine. This is the stage in which
artwork and graphics are worked on. These are the graphics that are used for the pictures and images that are
designed with a computer program.
Sub-Editing; Focuses on quality control, firstly it checks the accuracy of all facts in the articles, then it makes
sure that words are properly spelled and that the grammar and punctuation are used correctly. Lastly, they
make sure that all articles follow the house style and they begin working on the page layout.
Page Layout; Normally , there is a special team that are responsible for the page layouts. Their job is to type set
and layout all the pages that come together in the magazine
Proofreading; Spotting for any mistakes that have been made, any mistake that is spotted is quickly corrected
on the DTP file.
File emailed to printer; Before the printing company prints hundreds or thousands of copies requested by the
publication, the company first prints a few copies and sends them to the publications editor for checking once
again.
Distribution; This is the final stage of the process and it is when the printing company have finished with the
printing of the magazine and they will package them neatly and send them to the warehouse. From the

Q magazine has a demographic of 66%
ABC1 consumers and more males read
the magazine than females. Throughout
the range of ages, the most common age
for the people who read this is young
and that is because they have the highest
percentage of 33.3% from age 15-24 years
old. In this age the spending power will
be low as they will most commonly be
students which means they wont have a
lot of money to purchase. It is mainly
ABC1 because these people will have a
fair bit of money to purchase the
magazine compared to the C2DE
because they will have jobs that pay a
much higher wage because they are
managers and not students or a low
office worker. Also, they may have a
busy lifestyle consisting of various
business work but also going out.
£5.99
11. Distribution
In the uk (where Q is most popular) you can either; subscribe, digital copy or have a paper
copy to Q magazine, however this can also be available around the world (230 countries). If
some people subscribe for the paper copy then they can receive a copy before that issue
reaches the shelves in the shops as it will get delivered straight to your house address. Also
by subscribing to the magazine you can get a lot more offers and some issues for a cheaper
price, you cant get this from the shops because they wont do these offers. The most
common website people use to subscribe to the magazine is greatmagazines.com, tis is
because its reliable and easy to use. The magazine is published in English and doesn't’t
really get published in any other languages. Lastly, Q magazine is available in most shops
that stock books or supermarkets (for example; Whsmiths&Tescos).
12. Distribution (Online)
Q magazine is distributed all over the internet whether you want to buy an issue or
subscribe for many issues. Places like Greatmagazines.co.uk is a popular website for
Q magazine to sell of as it gives an honest review and prices. It also shows shops

14. Advertising & Marketing
Guerilla Marketing; A unconventional form of marketing that is showing something in a unique or
unexpected way.
Viral Marketing; A technique in marketing that companies send over information electronically
and once posted and viral it will have a huge amount of following and hits.
TV Adverts; A company that uses TV to advertise their product
Radio Adverts; A company that uses the radio to advertise their product
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sr6lr_VRsEo The link is the new John Lewis Christmas advert
which is called BusterTheBoxer. This is an example of a TV advert and viral marketing as it has

Above the line
The denotation above the line advertising is when promotions use mass media methods. This type
of promotion focuses on advertising to a large audience.
This picture shows guerilla marketing, this is because
through a picture of goldfish and a hedgehog it is showing
the new park assist in the new Volkswagen.
15. Advertising (Costs and Social Media Marketing)
Above the line; The denotation of above the line advertising is where mass media is
used to promote brands and reach out to the target consumers. These include
conventional media as we know it, television and radio advertising, print as well as
internet.
Q magazine used below the line marketing through using social media to tell their
fans/customers what new information is in their new issues of the magazine or if there
is an offer on in which they can get the magazine for cheaper annually because of an
offer code.
The costs to advertise in Q magazine is £10,072 for a full page of your advert or the
price for a half page it is £5, 036. The prices have gone up recently due to the fact that
Q has become more popular recently.

16. Advert (tv)
Q magazine use music awards events for their promotion, this is a good use of promotion
because people will think that Q magazine will have the best information about the artists in
there because if it can host a TV awards show in which hundreds of thousands of viewers tune
in to watch it then it will obviously have the best information and latest news on all of their
favourite artists. Also, in 2014, q magazine released a TV advert dedicated to its new special
issue which had a huge amount of content to do with AcDc if you look at the advert as well as
information on Barack Obama and the sugababes. The advert is just simply a 30 second video
of previews of the articles and their song lyrics.

17. Purpose and meaning
The purpose of this magazine is shown
in the strap line ‘The 10 most exciting
people in music right now’ by the artist
Jay Z being a close up shot on front of
the magazine signifies that more people
will want to buy the magazine as he is a

magazine it consists of exclusive
interviews, amazing photography that
are made into a4 posters, it also

the artists within the genre of the
magazine which is pop/rock. Their

connotations behind this strapline is
that Q magazine contains all the best
information of the best genre of music.
This signifies that Q magazine will be
the most popular magazine because it
contains everyone's favourites
18. Content
Includes interviews and latest music updates from the genre pop/rock. It
also shows posters and group photos of the selected bands for the genre
either pop or rock. The magazine doesn't’t just cover the artist their is on
the front page but it covers a lot more artist within which is visible of the
magazines cover line. The magazines also includes various competitions
and where the best place to buy concert tickets from, it also covers new
singles, albums and upcoming tour dates. Q magazine also uses social
media links to show what they have in their magazine which will
hopefully been seen by others making them a potential customer, they also
put what's in the next issue so that people knows what they are buying.
The magazine throughout has the same layout and house styles, this is
important because it looks professional which its being read. They also use
the same image as on the front cover when talking about the artist as this
signifies the importance of that artist. Elsewhere, the house style and
layout is simple so this means the customer can recognise the ‘Q’.
19. Contents Page
Masthead; The masthead
is bold and simple which
makes the red and White
‘Q’ sign stand out which
should also boost sales in
shops.
Content of magazine;
Sub-headings and
sublines The page number
and titles are down the
left side of the page. Each
title has a brief
description of what occurs
on the page.
Small Image; the big
image at the top of the
page signifies to the
reader with a number,
with this number they can
see what page their
favourite artist is on.
Main Image;
The main on the contents page
is what the reader will see first
and it and takes up most of the
page. This straight away gives
the reader an idea about what
the magazine consists of. The
image then has a number to
the bottom left of it, that is a
page number and if you go to
the page you can see the
article
Issue Number; This
number is what issue
of the magazine that it
is or what week the
magazine is on.
20. Genre
The genre for Q magazine is pop/rock music, the images below illustrate a
famous pop musician/artist (Adele) and on the right highlights a rock
musician/artist (Dave Grohl) on the front page. This shows the Q magazine can
vary in what genre it puts in its magazine every issue made
This connotes that Q magazine covers a range amount of
genres as shown from this review on yahoo answers. It also
shows that the articles within the magazine are in-depth and
have their own style of what the put inside the magazine.

21. Deconstruct a front cover
Strapline.
This is the slogan underneath the masthead,
Q’s slogan is usually ‘discover great music’
however for this front page it is ‘special award
edition’. The word special highlight that there
will be exclusive, behind the scene content
within this issue.
Artists Picture.
This is a mid-shot photo of the successful
artist Ed Sheeran, the photograph shows him
looking up, this could metaphorically mean
that Ed is showing Q magazine is at the top
of the scales.
Writing.
The white writing on the black background
signifies that he is different to every else
and metaphorically sticks out from all the
other artists.
Cover Line.
The cover lines signify (De Saussure)
what the magazine covers in that
issue. It has the artist in big so it
catches the audiences eye to see if
they are interested in that artist.
Masthead.
The letter ‘Q’ is in a
classy/modern font which
makes it look smart and
different to other
magazines. The colour red
connotes that Q are
passionate about giving
audience great up to date,
music information
Main Headline.
The front cover is a picture of Ed
Sheeran who is an extremely
successful artist looking up at
something. This matches the heading
‘Stories of the year. By those who
made them’ the picture matches
because Ed Sheeran is looking up
(almost like he is thinking about his
stories and dreams he’s told Q). The
red writing which stands out hugely
on the black background , this could
metaphorically mean that the artist
‘Ed sheeran’ stands out to all of the
rest of the music artist because of
how talented he is in music.
22. Deconstruction of DPS
Picture.
Just the face of Jay Z connotes how
important he is and gives an experience to
the reader that the articles like have a 1 to 1
chat with artist. It also shows hugely that
just using his face to take up half of the
double page spread is of himself.
Colour.
The huge use of red
with the contrast of
the yellow and white
writing ‘Rap Rader’
connotes to the
audience that this
artist (Jay Z) is
important.
Article.
The big red J signifies (De Saussure)
to the reader how big the artist is and
how linking back to the front page
how its ‘The biggest stories of the
year’
Pull Quote.
The verbal code of the pull quote
‘Everyone trying to do something
new is going to come up against a
Noel Gallagher figure in their life’
‘signifies’ (De Saussure) the
successful artist Jay Z’s personal
opinion, this make the reader want to
read on because he has said an
interesting point.
Drop Capital.
The Drop capital has been put
in place to highlight the reader
where to start reading. The font
of the H and the T being the
same font matches up with all
the other fonts throughout the
magazine.
23. Target Audience
Hartley’s theory.
The age stereotypically for Q magazine is 15-30 years old this is because the music in the magazine
reflects their personality at their age. Because of the genre of this magazine the older generation wont be
looking at this because the older generation would not be listening to pop/rock.
The gender, more males would read Q than female because some men are more interested in pop/rock
than women.
The peoples class who would want to buy this magazine is working class. The group of the consumers is
70%, the other 30% could maybe be students because they might not have the money to spend on a
magazine.
Katz’ Theory.
The theory is about how the use of media can be different for all different people and that the choices
made are their own and its what they want to do. When they do this, they are supposed to get
gratification instead of just watching a video or reading something. The Q magazine audience would be a
variation of ‘inform and educated’ as well as diverse reviews and other information that can make the
audience learn something from the magazine or they may be focused on what happens in the artist
interviews.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs.
Readers of Q would be explorers because the magazine includes upcoming bands and stories about what
is happening at one point in time to do with specific bands or different artists and the reader would want
to know this because then they can become more interested in new bands and possibly might like rock
more.
24. Audience theories
Socio-economics
This is based on the status of the person in what group they are
in because of what job they are in. This means that the socio-
economics for XXL magazine is; A, B and C1 because they price
of the magazine is fairly high. This is proven as on the Bauer
media website it says that 66% of the audience are from; A,B or
C1.
Psychographics
This is based on how people come across and what they look
and act like stereotypically. The readers for Q magazine would
be quite strange and wear clothes that are beige and brown with
ripped jeans and boots.
25. Deconstruction of website
Content.
On the website it is different to the
magazine by the fact that it includes videos
of latest interviews with artists. This is
different because the magazine are unable
to supply a working video because its
paper.
Layout.
The layout for this website is extremely easy
to use. It also shows all over the website the
‘Q’ magazine logo to shows the reader that
they are on the biggest magazine of the years
website.
Social Media Links.
The social media links used by Q for
instagram, Pinterest, YouTube and
Facebook. This shows that Q magazine is
modern and are able to advertise their
website over the internet. This is perfect
because over 2 million people have access
to social media.
26. Content page analysis
The contents page of the magazine covers all the stories and interviews that they
have worked on. The contents page includes pictures of the bands so that if the
reader find the photo interesting they know what page to go to but also if the reader
already knows about the artist/band they will know what exact page to go to
because the photo will indicate where to go.
27. Synergy
Q magazine uses lots of different social media, they use sites like; Facebook,
twitter, YouTube. They use this so that their readers know what kinds of things
the magazine is going to talk about in their next issue and this should then keep
their readers intrigued.
You can also get the next issue online as they have an app on the app store where
you can read it on your phone/tablet. This then creates a bigger target market for
Q magazine as potentially more customers could occur.
Throughout the whole magazine they advertise all the latest gigs and albums that
are coming out soon with a link showing what shops they are available in.
123,467 likes128,800 followers 4,202 subscribers
28. Technological Convergence
The Q magazine has a website and publishes issues of their magazine monthly but it only
shows the old issues so that people cant exploit the system and get a free new magazine
online.
As you can see from the screen shot The Q
magazine are in synergy with apple music,
facebook and twitter. The number of likes
underneath facebook signifies to the audience
that the magazine has a huge amount of
positive thoughts towards it.
http://www.qthemusic.com
29. Technological Convergence
Cont..
The Q magazine also have a mobile app that
can be found on iTunes. This is a quick to use
app which you can purchase various issues of
the magazine at one time. The app also
includes; latest news, album reviews and
exclusive interviews which cannot be seen on
the magazine.
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/q-
music-magazine-news-
album/id550103031?mt=8
The Q magazine also has a YouTube account
that has over 4,000 fans. This is a fairly low
number compared to the amount of readers Q
gets annually. This could be because the people
that are subscribed to the YouTube are die hard
fans to Q and want t find out more information
from their articles.

31. Retail Outlets
Q magazine gets sold in the retail outlets od Tesco's,
WHSmiths and Sainsbury's, these a large shops that are
normally local for most people in England meaning the
magazine has more chance to sell.
32. Form and Style
The form and style throughout the Q magazine maintains the same simple
design. The magazine the majority of the time will include a black background
with white font or sometimes the other way around, a red font for the use of the
drop capitals so that it keeps within the theme but does stand out between the
usual basic colours of white and black. The font in all of the Q magazines are
always the same, its just a simple text. This might appeal to the reader because
one, they will find it easy to read and two, with the basic text the other basic
features but the red and white different designs also makes the magazine
atheistically pleasing. Additionally, the front covers of the magazine also will
normally have this design and will always have a page number and web address
so they can advertise more and keeps everything the same . This then makes it
become easy to recognise so potentially more customers may think about buying
the Q magazine.
33. Types of newspapers
Free Sheet
These are the newspapers that are given
away for free but make their money through
advertisement in the magazine. An example
for a free sheet newspaper is the ‘Metro’.
This type of newspaper will cover headlines
to do with the latest show business and
articles that aren't to do with politics or any
serious information that affects the world. It
originated in 1995 and it was a daily
newspaper that got given on public
transport in Sweden. Metro then slowly
started releasing across European countries,
Uk being one of them. Metro, today, has 13
editions to their newspaper and combined
has a readership of 1.3 million people just
within the Uk.
The free sheet newspaper originated in a
town in Germany called Lübeck and was
distributed twice weekly.
Red Top Tabloid
These are the newspapers that are named
because of the logo being a big red block that
stands out to the audience. A tabloid is
typically measured as 11 X 17 Inches and is
five columns across meaning it is much more
smaller than a broadsheet newspaper, this is
also because in a tabloid there is less content
so therefore not much space is needed. The
writing style within these papers are
commonly known as tabloid journalism,
within this there is particular emphasis to
crime stories, astrology, gossip columns and
sports stars. Additionally there are elements
of sensationalism as not all information that
is given is completely accurate
http://metro.co.uk/about/ http://www.britishpapers.co.uk/ta
g/red-top/
34. You have to pay for these daily newspapers, they are
distinguished by their large page size. The content in the
newspaper is seen as a higher standard of journalism. The
connotation of this is that more intellectual people read this
type of newspaper because of the in depth analysis of stories
and less sensationalist content compared to free sheet and
red top tabloid papers. The top half of this newspaper, above
the fold has the most important headlines, whereas below the
fold the less important lead stories were published.

35. My Chosen Newspaper
The Daily Mirror
The Daily Mirror is a British national daily tabloid newspaper founded in 1903. It is owned by its parent
company Trinity Mirror. The title on its masthead was simply The Mirror but changed to the Daily Mirror in
2002 , its last average daily print circulation was 716,000. The red tabloid covers genres such as; sport, celebrity
gossips and the latest news.
Publisher
Their publisher is Trinity Mirror they publish over 150 newspaper titles across the UK & Ireland, some
examples of their newspapers are; the the Daily Mirror, the Daily Record, the Sunday Mirror, the Sunday
People and the Sunday Mail.
Genre
The Daily Mirror newspaper contains a serious genre but can also cover not so serious stories. This is because
they report on all different types of news stories such as; sports, celebrities, politics/show business and murder
cases or any type of death or assault.
www.mirror.co.uk/
http://www.trinitymirror.co

36. Front page
The logo ‘Daily Mirror’ proves it is an red top tabloid due to the colour of the bright
red background and the white writing. This helps to stand out on the shelves of the
supermarket. It can also show that it is an important newspaper.
The use of this advertisement ‘Your
ultimate guide to cracking Easter
eggs – from just 99p’, the
connotations that are behind this are
that they are cheap and affordable
for everyone and this is useful as the
people that are spending 45p of a
newspaper aren't going to be a high
class. The picture on the advert is of
children smiling and being happy.
This could show to the reader that if
they invest in this advert for only
98p then their children will be
happy.
The front page story which is ‘Everybody
was kung fuel fighting’. This is a funny
pun used to talk about a fight in which
took place in England. This is a perfect
way for daily mirror to attract readers
because some people want to know about
the news but can find it boring so by
putting an humorous approach on the
article it may encourage readers to pick it
up.
The main image used is a photo
that was caught in the moment to
show the readers that the article
they are writing about is a lie
because there is proof in the
photo.
The second story that takes place
in the red top tabloid is the fact
that a host on a popular Tv show
has been axed. You can tell that
this article is fairly important
because it is in a bigger font than
the other article about Kate
Middleton.
37. Dps
The headline for the
newspapers double page
spread is talking about the a
couple that has et the world
adoption record. Within this
headline it talks about a couple
that has adopted eight children
and have brought them up in a
loving family. This will make
readers pick up this newspaper
because for once it is containing
happy news instead of usually
negative news.
This is used by daily mirror
to show the reader what
page they are on so that
they can also make a
contents page so that
readers can just go straight
to the article due to the
number. You can also see
that daily mirror have put
their logo by the number.
Copy
This is a snippet of the important
bits of the article. This is normally
a quote in which is the most
important bit of the article because
it should make the reader want to
find out more about the article and
will therefore read it.
Main Image
The main image used is the picture of all the
adopted kids with their names and age, this
signifies to the reader that this family is real and
not fake news due to the picture of them all
smiling.
At the bottom right of the
double page spread there is a
website link to the daily
mirrors website. Once you get
onto the website you can see
38. Genre
The Daily Mirror newspaper contains
a serious stories of magnitude but can
also cover not so serious stories. This
is because they report on all different
types of news stories such as; sports,
celebrities, politics/show business and
murder cases or any type of death or
assault. Daily Mirror covers a lot of
different genres in order to create a
wider target audience. This is because
some people prefer different news
stories to each other, this will then
create different feedback for Daily
Mirror as everyone will have a
different opinion on the article and It
will attract a large audience because
everyone will be talking about it.
39. Publisher
The publisher for Daily Mirror is called ‘Trinity Mirror’. They are one if
the largest multimedia UK publishers and have been around since the
early 1800’s. They originated in Newcastle and released their first journal
there, within this they spoke about the latest news and trends, today,
they still continue with that type of genre in their articles. They still print
newspapers so that you can buy them from shops and have a hand copy,
but, they also have a website in which you can download an app as well
which covers the same articles.

40. Website Analysis
On this website I can see that they have made it look very modern and up to date, this
could attract the reader because if the website looks modern and professional then the
articles will be up to date and have interesting articles in which they can read.
Also, on the top right of the website you can see that the mirror have url links that
connect straight to their social media pages. This is good by the mirror as when people
click on it then they may receive a lot of followers and therefore more people will be
speaking about the mirrors articles and this could potentially make the newspaper
bigger. Also there is a navigation bar that goes across the top of the page which has
different categories of the website meaning that it is very easy to use if you have come to
the website for a certain reason, such as if you are looking for news on sport then all you
have to do is click on sport and it will take you to a page where it contains news on all of
the popular sports, this makes it very easy to use as you can find whatever article you
want just by clicking on what you want to read about.
41. Website analysis Cont.
The website also contains a ‘contact us’
page in which there are a huge amount of
numbers and emails you can contact for all
different parts of the newspaper. This is
perfect for people as they can just find out
who to contact if they have a problem or a
questions with the magazine and by the
mirror having all of these contacts then it
makes it extremely easy and quick to find
out an answer instead of other newspapers
which only have a little amount of contacts
so you would have to contact them to then
wait for a response because they have to
contact someone else in order to answer
your query.
42. News Values (Galtung & Ruge)
The front page articles and lead stories the mirror
chooses are used for ‘mass appeal’ because every
story they put on the front page, everyone is normally
speaking about it and lots of people in the country
can relate to it, also in the article of the picture it
shows sport as one of the articles and since football is
a very popular sport in England then it will appeal to
many different readers as they will want to find out
more about it. On this article it also contains ‘surprise
news’ due to the fact that one of the articles is about a
woman that has lost 14 stone in 4 years, this is
surprise news as you wouldn’t expect to see it on a
serious newspaper. However, this will create more
readers as it is about something that both genders
both find interesting so more people will read it as
well meaning the daily mirror will get more sales.
This article is also ‘immediacy’ due to the fact that the
main front page article is the latest news and has
happened recently so more people will be speaking
about it and will want to find out more information
on what's happened.
700,000 Daily Mirror
readers, this is 6th in the
UK newspaper market
with the sun in 1st
position with 1.6million
readers
43. News Values cont…
In this double page spread that is in the
mirror it contains a lot of ‘negativity’ as it is
on news that can upset many people as it on
a very sad story that has happened, this is
also what the mirror creates articles on
because it is serious news as it is about
something that has shocked the world. This is
also ‘amplitude’ because it is an event that
affects are large number of people meaning
more people will pick up and read the
newspaper. Altogether, this is very negative
double page spread as it contains an article
that is taken from a horrible story, this could
also put people off buying the newspaper as
they might not want to constantly be reading
negative and down news.
44. Advertisement
To advertise in the mirror it costs a lot of money (up to £9000 for a double
page spread in colour), this is because it’s a national newspaper that has a lot
of readers so therefore your advert will be seen by a lot of people, the reason it
is this much is because the mirrors printing and distribution costs are a lot of
money and they will be wanting to make a bigger profit due to the fact that
they sell the newspaper for 55p and 65p on weekends.

45. Marketing
The mirror have two popular source of marketing and they are both
through social media. They use both Twitter and Facebook, on their
pages they post picture of the front pages of the actual newspaper and
they also have articles that are posted on there which then take you to
their online website once you have clicked on it. At the top of each
pages they promote other accounts that are made by the mirror such as
‘mirror politics’ and ‘mirror football’. Both pages also contact contact
details and links so that you can ask them if you have any queries and
you can wait for a response.

46. Marketing – TV advert
Daily Mirror rarely ever publish a TVs adverts, however, after 10 years of not
releasing any type of TV advert they created this one ‘#madeuthink’ in which
there is a clumsy person who is constantly doing wrong until he reads a daily
mirror then him seems extremely educated and not clumsy at all. The actor in
the video then points out to others the dangers that they have near them. This is
a way of the daily mirror showing to its audience that if you read the daily
mirror then you will become more intelligent because of the professional
content within it.

47. Demographics
Hartley’s theory.
The people that read this newspaper stereotypically will be in the age of around 30-60’s. This is
because at that age you become a full adult and are interested in more serious issues in the world,
whereas kids will find out the news now on social media and it will be news about celebrities or
sports and if they were told to read an article on politics then they would find it very boring and not
interesting. The gender for this magazine would usually be a male, this is because women tend to
read magazines to find out the news, however some females may read the mirror because they find
that genre of news interesting. The class of the reader would be of working class as the newspaper is
relatively cheap and could be a newspaper they read on their commute to work on a busy train.
Katz Theory
For this newspaper some of it would be articles that will inform and educate the reader on what's
going on in the world at the moment and what good and bad things are currently happening. It
might also used for someone who has a personal interest in one of the articles that the mirror covers.
Maslows hierarchy of needs
The people that will care strongly about a article because they fully understand what the story is
about because it is relatable. The readers could also be explorers because they want to find out the
latest news on what's happening in the world.
48. IPSO Editors Code of Practice
The editors code of practice are rules set up that newspapers
and magazines regulated by IPSO have agreed to follow. It
contains 1-16 categories in which rules are implied that vary
from whether or not the articles accurate to serious stories
such as reporting suicides or children in sex cases. The
newspaper needs to conform these laws in order to get their
newspaper published, this means following the rules when
covering a certain genre in your article, such as, if the
newspaper is writing up an article on children in sex cases,
which would normally be covered in The Mirror because they
focus on the serious genre. They have to follow the following
rules which are; The child's name should never be identified
however the adult may have their name used in the article
and also care must be taken that nothing in the report implies
the relationship between the accused and the child. If the
newspaper follows these rules then their newspaper can be
published and sent to the public.

49. Citizen Journalism
Definition; Citizen Journalism is the collection, dissemination, and analysis of news
and information by the general public, especially by means of the Internet.
On the website for the Daily Mirror there is a bar at the top with a ‘contact us’
section. This is a section for citizen journalism in which normal people can report
on a story in which they have seen. This can be either a photo, video or even a
written article on an article, once it has been sent into the newspaper company, the
company will finalize a price in which the will buy the article off the ‘citizen’. Many
newspapers don’t have citizen journalism as an option because there is normally a
higher percentage of articles that don’t get published than to the ones that do get
published. Therefore this could create a lot of time being wasted. An example for
citizen journalism is having a picture or video that gives evidence of that story
actually happening such as picture of the Westminster attacks in London that
happened a few weeks ago.

50. ASA
Firstly the newspaper has to consider its target audience when putting an advert in the
paper. Such as there was a situation in November 2012 where the mirror had to ban one of
the adverts that showed a ‘Free £5 play bet’. The reason behind this was because they
used very childish photos such as characters from the film transformers which is appealed
to the younger generation, this then caused a lot of complaints as people thought they
were potentially trying to persuade kids to want to bet. However ASA showed their
presence and made sure that Trinity Mirror (The daily mirror publisher) issued a response
to the advert and what they were trying to achieve with their advert. Once Trinity mirror
gave a response about how they put the advert in the money part of the newspaper and
how they put a sign on the advert that strictly said ‘Over 18 only’. From this response the
ASA just simply said that the photos in the advert shouldn't’t be present in the newspaper
and they will have to change the pictures used for the mirror gambling advert. In addition
to this the ASA are the Advertising Standards Authority is the self-regulatory organisation
of the advertising industry in the United Kingdom. The ASA is a non-statutory
organisation and so cannot interpret or enforce legislation. However, its code of
advertising practice broadly reflects legislation in many instances.
