The increase of information technology and web enabled tools has allowed businesses to leverage the Internet to provide better services, products, and respond to customers' needs.
One trend that is increasing in popularity is to "Bring Your Own Device" to work. More businesses are permitting employees to use their own laptops and tablet computers to perform work related tasks while accessing the internal networks of the company. This trend help increase productivity by giving the workers access to the resources from wherever they are and reduces overhead costs by reducing the amount of capital purchases for employees such as a dedicated laptop or desktop computer. Better network management tools are being developed to curb the potential pitfalls of this type of work flow such as lost devices or employee turnover with critical corporate data.With BYOD, departments can leverage the universal access to information to provide training opportunities for their members as well and communicate with the surrounding community. Mobile devices can allow you to access resources in the cloud, back at the station while on scene or working with another department. Computers are disappearing and their tasks which once required a user to sit at a desk and interact with keyboard and mouse now require a spoken word, a glace, or a wave of the hand to get certain tasks done. This trend is revolutionizing the entertainment and media industries as they are quickly capitalizing the need for on-the-go and on-demand services and products. We used to make computers adapt to our needs through software and hardware but soon, the computers will be adapting to us as we move through an ever increasing pace of life. When we call for customer service, we won't have to wait for an operator, but speak intelligently to a computer assistant who will search for information and respond to use intelligently.Google Glass and Siri can provide instant navigation information and traffic updates to shorten response times. Glass can also allow cloud based access to building plans, utility maps, and other information needed for a response. The video camera can help the incident commander a first person view of what’s happening as well as document what was done. It’s a great tool for fire investigations and documentation. Golden-I headset, similar to Google Glass can use infrared technology to “see” through walls to help locate victims as well as a BioMatrix system to alert the incident commander if you are in physical distress and send out a location signal to get help.
The ease and proliferation of communication tools for the Internet allows for the integration of skilled and specialized workers from around the globe instead of working from a centralized office. Telecommuting continues to increase as a percentage of the workforce, although it has slowed with the hiring reduction during the recession. The percentage of workers, mostly in private sector jobs, who work more than one day per week from home increased 73% between 2005 and 2011. It closely parallels the increase of High Speed Internet into homes. This trend has led to the hiring of more workers from different parts of the country or the world to collaborate digitally on products instead of meeting face to face. The technology has improved so this is now possible. A motorcycle company now uses this co-creation approach by providing a broad list of specifications to supplies, who then work together to design the components of the bike while the reducing the total development cost because it is done using standards-based technology. Departments can leverage this command by tapping into experts in the field, master instructors, and other resources to virtually work with and help train new and veteran members. Members can attend via software such as Skype, Adobe Connect, or Google Hangouts.
The breadth of information being collected through the use of technology is being leveraged by businesses to improve production, increase services, and bring new products to market. Data analysis of information collected through businesses via the Internet is being utilized to make smarter, data-driven, decisions in the marketplace. This data mining is used to create customer profiles, predictive purchasing, and marketing strategies to target specific consumers. Amazon.com and Facebook are two of the giants when it comes suggested products targets to specific users. Other industries are following suit. Toll booths are beginning to segment fees based on time of day and traffic conditions, grocery stores use their club cards to mail out coupons for related products or products for prior purchases.Having information about a particular building, # of occupants and other information can help expedite the decision making process when arriving on scene. Accessing Multi-use facilities information can let you know what to expect on scene. By knowing what to look for at a scene, you can increase the probability of saving lives and structures.How can the fire service take advantage of the wealth of information being collected in the daily operations of the service?
Security - with hackers able to consistently breach networks (even the Pentagon isn't safe) a movement to biometric security. Any password using a combination of keyboard characters can be cracked. The huge increase in computing power has also benefited crime syndicates as they can develop more efficient and faster ways to circumvent security and access sensitive data. While biometric security has been around for a while but hadn't caught on. Such features as fingerprint swipes, facial recognition, and retina scan will help keep hackers at bay.Cloud based services has increased the access to information from anywhere but has also increased the exposure to attack. Biometric security protocols will help keep citizen data safe and help prevent sensitive information from getting into the wrong hands.What security methods is your department using to protect information from outside attack?
Another trend in business is the usage of Web 2.0 tools for consumers to provide feedback and opinions about existing products as well as potential new products. A T-shirt company leverages the web by asking consumers to submit designs for potential shirts, then the members of the site vote on which shirt(s) they would like to see produced. This provides a cost savings by reducing R&D and some marketing because there is a captive audience as the base for purchasing the merchandise. Additionally, the gamification of the Internet has the power to further increase how businesses reach out and interact with their customers. Massively online games have been a trend for years and have drawn more gamers to video games to be part of something bigger than what happen on their own set, competing against other human players instead of the computer. This model has been applied to education as well through MOOC (Massively Online Open Courses) and other developments such as the Khan Academy which supplies 1000s of tutorials free of charge for students to learn.Feedback from citizens using various web 2.0 tools can help a department respond to the needs of their constituents. Members of the department have an opportunity to give feedback and give input about training needs and areas for improvement.Getting input from different areas of the fire service can provide different perspective about operations.
A business trend that has roots in the software coding world is the unbundling of production. Technology has enabled companies to modularize and reuse their existing structures to lease or sell to other companies. When Amazon.com opened up their logistics and distribution services to small companies who cannot implement their own, they provided a needed service for smaller companies and increased their ROI on the infrastructure by increasing its usage through fees and services. 80% of companies plan to invest in web services technology to allow other companies, suppliers, and customers access to parts of their IT system using standard protocols. This model is utilized in the real world as well as a way for small businesses to rent or lease high end office space for short times to present a polished look during a project or transition, share workspace in a data center instead of a self contained IT department.The use of interconnected and modularized resources can help smaller departments access the resources of larger departments to develop training modules and provide instruction. Could your departments benefit from a model where larger departments open up some of their training modules for use by those who lack the resources to develop them on their own?
Travel industry is taking advantage of this through the creation of pricing portals for consumers to have information for purchase at their fingers. Through standard data exchanges, consumer and B2B oriented businesses can gather information about products and services from multiple services and compile them into a concise list Priceline spearheaded the consumer pricing revolution with their "name your own price" model. Other sites began using the power of the Internet to offer lower pricing for hotel, airfare, and rental cars by listing them all in one location. The consumers reaped the benefit of lower prices while businesses were able to have their offers seen by millions who may not have otherwise seen them. The Real Estate industry has capitalized on this by providing housing information to the average home buyer and seller that was, in the past, only available to licensed agents. Zillow.com gives Home buyers and sellers a look at comparable homes in the area where they wish to do their transactions, giving them a better understanding of the market and how it could impact their purchasing decisions.How could Fire and Rescue can tap into this data to help them with community action as well as public service initiatives in the surrounding community?
Moore’s law states the number of transistors on integrated circuit chips will double every 18-24 months, increasing computing speed and power exponentially.Technology is smaller and mobile – Computers which filled a room to perform simple calculations or navigated the Apollo rockets to the moon now fit in the palm of our hand and do many magnitudes of calculations above and beyond their predecessors. Technology is providing increasing information – The US Library of Congress houses every Tweet ever sent out. Grocery stores keep data to analyze your shopping needs and offer new deals. Your web browser stores information about your online browsing and Google offers targeted advertising based on your online behavior. Technology Connects – people are communicating and learning from each other when it was never possible. Access to information and ideas increase human knowledge and understanding.
