Unifying Themes in Life Science
These six general themes are levels of organization, the flow of energy, evolution, interacting systems, structure and function , ecology, and science and society.
2. Earth is the home of human beings and organisms, including
animals, plants and microorganisms.
3. Life Science/Biology
•The field of science that deals with the
study of life.
•It involves different disciplines. These
disciplines are connected to one another,
through which the biologist termed as
unifying themes.
8. Biological System
•Biological system applies to all levels of
life from the biosphere all the way down
to the interactions of molecules in cells.
9. All organisms are made up of cells.
The cell is the basic unit of building
blocks of life.
If an organism is made of only one
cell, it is a called UNICELLULAR
If an organism is made many cell, it is
a called MULTICELLULAR.
10. Multicellular Organisms
2 Specialized Cells (for different functions)
Muscle Cells – contract and enable you to move
Nerve Cells – transmit impulses that control your
muscles.
13. STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
Structure determines function.
• The structure is the shape of the object.
• The function is the object’s specific role.
Proteins with different structures perform different
functions.
Heart muscles have a different structure and
function that stomach muscles.
Different species have different anatomical
structures with different functions.
19. All organism need a source of
energy to carry out life processes.
Work depends on the source of
energy.
Energy is obtained in chemical
from intake of sugar, fats, and
other
Fuel-like molecules in your food
through the process of metabolism
Metabolism- is a chemical process
that build up or breakdown the
materials
20. REGULATION AND HOMEOSTASIS
The ability of the organism to regulate their internal
conditions is an example or “steady state”.
A mechanism that makes organism regulates their
internal conditions, despite changes I their external
environment
Such activity can be observed in mammals like human,
birds and other forms of organism.
Non-living things are classified as inanimate objects that may influence, alter or impact the life of biotic factors. These abiotic factors are essential to biotic factors in various ways.
Ex. CELL –is a system of chemicals and processes.
Structure and functions are connected.
Ex. Different cells have specific components that help them carry out their duties.
