My Experience In High School Essay
It was a cool fall day, the pleasant cool breeze against my face, as I make my way down the road
to the rendezvous point. I arrive at the high school, and realize I m slightly early. I put the
skateboard on the ground and proceed to attempt to ride it, thankful that no one was there to see.
Though I enjoy skating, the pointof meeting at the high school was so that no one had to see our
novice attempts at it. After five minutes of failing to get the board to leave the ground with me
remaining on it, Raith and Mea cross the road just in time to witness my pitiful endeavor. We spent
most of the morning cruising on our boards and sitting, drinking various sodas we had brought, and
chatting. It was a rather enjoyable start to the day, but by the time noon rolled around, most of us
had to use the bathroom. So we collectively decided to headdown to the skate park because it was
close, had a bathroom, and sounded like it could be fun. Little did we know how much trouble
would come from this little trip.
We arrive at the skate park to find that, surprisingly, no one is there. I make my way to the
bathroom, as well does the rest of the group. Afterwards we can t see the point of heading back
immediately. I attempt a few ramps and fall on my butt a few times so, ultimately, we decide to
sit at the bench and talk. I was facing the road and Raith and Mea sat with their backs to it. At this
point, I m already uncomfortable being here, because I can t skate to save my life and have

Ancient Near East History

How did the Persian kings control/govern the various parts of their realm? Consider at least three
different geographical areas
The origins of Cyrus the Great are rather unclear and highly disputed. Multiple accounts range
from him being the grandson of the Median King Astyages to being the son of a poor Persian
family of a disreputable clan. Although there can be no certainty, as with most everything from
the ancient world, it is widely believed that, by heredity, he became the sub king of a Persian
land called Persis, under the rule of the Median king Astyages. (Cook 1983, 25 26) He quickly
expanded his power by unifying all of the Persian lands under ... Show more content on

After conquering Media, Babylonia, and Egypt, for instance, Cyrus The Great and Cambyses II
would make a personal union with the peoples of these countries. They would crown themselves
according to the local customs, and created normal conditions for the development of the economy
and transit trade. They retained, with moderate altercations, the local political structures in these
countries, and offered the peoples a large degree of local self government. These first two kings
proved to have not created a very well structured empire, however, which led to the multiple
uprisings from 523 521 BCE. (Gershevitch 1985, 502 504) From there, Darius I, the King who
proceeded Cambyses II, found a more stable balance by putting in place a more organized
administrative system that would not undergo any fundamental changes up until the demise of the
Achaemenid Empire.
The system that Darius I put in place split the empire up into roughly twenty satrapies that would
be governed by satraps. The satraps were responsible for collecting the annual tribute set by the
king, drafting people to the army, and maintaining justice and security within their satrapy. The
satraps would also have an armed force at their disposal to keep everybody within their satrapy in
line. (Gershevitch 1985, 267) Inspectors would also periodically visit each satrapy to

The Deranged Mind In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
A creature is born, and thrust out into the world. With no evil in his heart, he is feared and
outcasted by society for only his repulsive image. He held an innocent soul and a pure heart at birth,
however the isolation and hatred he endured from others transformed him into a murderous demon.
This impaired soul is the abandoned monster created by Victor Frankenstein. Mary Shelley offers
insight into the emotions and mind of a man forced to become a fiend through betrayal in her
novel Frankenstein. Shelley s literary work of a deranged mind allows Sigmund Freud s
psychoanalysis theory to be applied in order to understand the torment that causes a once pure man
to go insane. In order to properly judge the innocence and purity of a man made... Show more

By stating that his heart was fashioned to be susceptible of love and sympathy, and when
wrenched by misery to vice and hatred, it did not endure the violence of the change without torture
(Shelley 249) he recognized that he was not born or designed to be a vessel of malevolence, and
the harm he inflicted onto others weighed in his heart. Despite being equal to his human
counterparts in his capacity of the mind, they abused his spirit until the last trace of benevolence
was extinguished. A single glance upon the monster s gruesome figure and the terror would

Athenian Imperialism and her Changing Relations with Allies
Nature of Athenian Imperialism
Changing Relations with Allies
Lars Hoogvliet
After the conclusion of the Persian Wars (492 479BC) with Athens being the true victor, and before
the Peloponnesian War, a period of prosperity covered Athens, and they needed to devise new ways
to protect themselves and expand their wealth, and how this would affect their relations with allies.
The Athenians and their Allies was an organisation led by the Athenians in the 5th century, but is
now referred to as the Delian League or the Confederacy of Athens.
The official aim of the League was, according to Thucydides, to compensate themselves for their
losses [of the Persian War] by ravaging the territory of the King of Persia. The long term aim of...

The besiegement of Thasos revealed Athens true motivations behind the League and the future
plans for her allies. According to _Ancient Greece Using Sources_ Thasos was one of the largest
and richest members of the Delian League, and a conflict broke out between Athens and Thasos
over the gold mining on the island. Thasos then attempted to withdraw from the League, as the
Persians were no longer a threat in the Aegean, and Athens was demanding too much for too little in
return.
The League, under the control of Cimon, then besieged Thasos for two years, and destroyed their
city walls, confiscated their navy, closed their mint and annexed their possessions on the mainland.
According to Thucydides, the period from the revolt of Thasos to the ostracism of Cimon (465
461BC) was the time when the main friction between Sparta and Athens occurred and eventually
led to their war.
If Sparta really was willing to attack Athens, an apparent ally, then their relationship must have
been weak and forced. Was Sparta jealous of Athens wealth and power? Did they feel threatened by
the Athenians sudden harshness against their own allies ? Or it could have been a combination of
reasons. Thucydides didn t help either when his pro Athenian feelings got the better of him, this
was a time when Sparta was particularly friendly to Athens because of the courage displayed by
Athens against the Persians.
Another case of conflict between

How Does The Namesake Show Cultural Identity
Everyone struggles with identification, whether you are born and raised in one country and have
shared the same cultural beliefs and norms your whole life, or whether you are born in one country
and move to another that has different cultural norms and beliefs. What makes it unique to each
individual is the journey one takes to figure out their own identity. The Namesake shows a beautiful
journey from both his mother and Gogol s perspective. It shows a women who was taken out of a
country she loved and a country she only knew, then demonstrated the journey of her son, a first
generation Indian American and his struggle finding his own identity.
When being a part of a first generation immigrant there comes many identity struggles throughout
their lives. Using The Namesake, is a perfect example of the struggle some might face. Gogol, one
of the main characters is a first generation Indian American. Both parents were born and raised in

This funeral demonstrated how Ashima found her Indian family in America and how they can
share the same cultural beliefs and norms, but also integrate it with the American culture and
citizens who fully identify with being an American; such as Gogol s girlfriend at the time. It was
a beautiful funeral, especially to see two cultures coming together to honor one from another
cultural. The respect and love being shown, even from Gogol s girlfriend at the time, was a
magical experience. You could see she was a little uncomfortable at first, but then Gogol s family
embraced her and showed her by guiding her through the experience. This scene in the movie
explored how two cultures in one country can come together and share value and practice, even if
they might go about it differently. An Indian funeral is very different from an American one, but
the two cultures came together to honor and share their love for someone they respected, Gogol s

Why Michael Jordan Is The Best NBA Player
Michael Jordan, or as the sports world calls him MJ , is the greatest NBA player of all time,
including legend in the making LeBron James. Even though they are both excellent athletes,
Jordan stands out on and off the court. Jordan exudes a greater drive for success. Michael Jordan
is a better defender overall. His teammates weren t as fundamentally sound as Lebron s, meaning
Jordan had to work even harder for his championships. Jordan is the best basketballplayer in
history. In addition to his physical game, his mental game is equally or even stronger. To win at a
high level, you have to have not only athleticism, but a winning mindset. For example, in high

Lebron had five hall of famers on his team, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Ray Allen, Kyrie Irving,
and Kevin Love. Michael Jordan only had two hall of famers, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman.
MJ had to carry his team in the playoffs. Through his three Game 7s, Jordan averaged 33.7 points
(Favale). Lebron could not even compete with Michael Jordan s stats. Michael didn t have an
all star center or an all star point guard, so he was facilitating and rebounding the ball more for
his team. On the other hand, Lebron had an all star point guard when in Cleveland, Kyrie Irving.
Chris Bosh was an all star center when Lebron was in Miami. This goes to show if you have the
talent, then you won t need to rely on other players to achieve success. Michael Jordan said,
Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen (Jordan).
Jordan means that other people wait for greatness and rely on their teammates to make them
look better. Michael Jordan had no one to rely on but himself. Jordan is better than Lebron
because he worked hard and didn t depend on anyone else to make his own success for himself.
Generally speaking, Michael Jordan is an overall better player than Lebron James. Michael
Jordan shows a greater drive for success, a distinguished defense, and adaptability to his
teammates around him. Lebron James is not an awful player. He just does not have the skills
and mindset to be as great as Jordan. If you were going to rate these two players on a scale to one
to ten Lebron would be a eight, and Michael would be a

Why Vocational School
Why Vocational School May Be A Good Option If You Need A New Career
If you re working in a job with low pay and little chance for advancement, then you should
consider going back to school so you can broaden your options. It may be scary to think about
devoting four years to college considering the time and money you have to invest, but there may
be a better option. You could go to a vocational school and learn a new trade in two years or less.
Here s why vocational school is such a good idea.
Trade Specific Studies
Vocational school is ideal when you know exactly what type of occupation you want to pursue.
All the classes prepare you for the job you want to seek. You don t have to waste time taking
liberal arts classes that have nothing to do with your job. You ll get plenty of hands on training too.
Internships are often part of your schooling, so you graduate with an education and experience that
prepares you for the workplace.
Wide Choice Of Courses
When you think of vocational school, you may think of automotive training or plumbing school.
However, there is a wide choice in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When you go to vocational school, you can train for a new career in a few months. This gets you
into the workforce much quicker. With your education and training, you ll be eligible for jobs
that pay a decent wage. You can even use your new career as a stepping stone to an even better job.
Once you re making a good wage, you may be able to fund a college education and further your
career. For instance, you may start as a CNA and then work your way through nursing school.
One of the best things of all about a vocational school is that it costs less than four year college
tuition. Plus, you may be able to get financial aid in the form of loans, grants, and scholarships to

The Misery Of Silence By Maxing Hong Kinston
Critical Analysis of The Misery of Silence The Misery of Silence is a short essay in the book by
Maxing Hong Kinston, The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts, published
in Alfred A. Knopf in 1976. This narrative illustrates the author s childhood as a first generation
Chinese American and how her personality was split by living both in American culture and
Chinese culture. When Kingston was little, she was so afraid of speaking English that she was
silent in American school, which was a misery for her. Even when she spoke, she forced herself to
make her speech sound softer and thus acceptable for Americans. By contrast, she and her Chinese
American fellows behaved as they liked in Chinese school. This essay is composed roughly of two

As for sight, for example, she recalls covering her paintings with black paint to illustrate her
depressed feelings. As for hearing, she implies her insecurity by describing that her voice became
weaker when she was asked to repeat what she said. In particular, she details Chinese American
students speaking with a lot of rhetoric, such as an impressive metaphor of her voice, a crippled
animal running on broken legs. As this shows, voice is the key word in this essay. She describes it
as an indicator of Chinese American children s personality; their silence means temporary
personality death in American community, and the girls American feminine way to speak means
established another themselves. This narrative is helpful to know how immigrant children feel in
the new environment where there is a huge language barrier. It is still relevant today considering
increasing migration to the U.S. ( U.S. Immigrant Population and Share ) and urgent need for
special education for ESL students. In addition, it would let Americans have a more objective view

English 11; Period 2
May 3, 2017 Their Eyes Were Watching God In this story, I have found that the themes that have
stood out to me is gender and love. These themes have captured a major thematic idea by gender
being discriminated against the women and the men. Gender is described as women being weaker
than the men and men being the powerful ones. Love is described in this story as independent until
it is found. Finding love is a part of life and everybody tries to find it but when it is found, it
seems like you have lived you life to the fullest. These examples of the themes can be brought into
the real world and can affect how people live their lives.
My first theme is going to be about gender. In the novel, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gender can happen in the real world which can lead to personal experiences. I have experienced
some gender inequality throughout my life and have had family situations since I have been
alive. For instance, my parents lived in a time where men went to work and the women had to
clean, cook, and stuff around the house. I have experienced some problems myself by my brother
and I having to do outside yard work while my sister only does inside work. She claims that yard
work is for men and it s a man s job. . What I have to say about that is that men and women don t
need to do work based off if it is a man or woman s job, work is work and you shouldn t base it off
gender inequality. Another situation I was faced with was when my mom was trying to get a
job, she was trying to get a job at selling Tupperware. She was faced with you can t sell Tupperware
because you are a woman and people don t buy stuff off of women. . She sticked with her gut and
went for it, now she is very successful in her business and doesn t let what a guy said to her stop her.
Another theme I chose from the story was love. Love can be a powerful thing or a devastating
thing. For example, After that she came to where Joe Starks was waiting for her with a hired rig.
He was very solemn and helped her to the seat beside him. With him on it, it sat like some high,
ruling chair. From now on until death she

How Lymphedema Is An Abnormal Distension
Lymphedema is an abnormal distension, composed of protein and fluid secondary to the improper
functioning of the lymphatic system, which leads to a decreased balance of flow and fluid
discharge (Viehoff, Hidding, Heerkens, van Ravensberg, Neumann, 2014). Lymphedema may occur
in the upper extremity, lower extremity, head, neck, and thorax (Viehoff et al., 2014). Lymphedema
is classified as either primary or secondary lymphedema (Viehoff et al., 2014). According to Viehoff
et al. (2014), primary lymphedema in hereditary in nature and may affect any body part, but occurs
mostly in the legs. Secondary lymphedema results from damage to the lymphatic systemsecondary
to infection with lymphatic filariasis, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or inguinal and axillary node
dissection (Viehoff et al., 2014).
According to Viehoff et al., (2014), lymphedema is under recognized due to the fact that is not a
registered pathology. Viehoff et al., (2014) reports that there are approximately 140 to 250 million
people worldwide affected by lymphedema. The same author states that there is an estimated 120
million impacted by lymphedema in 72 countries, concurrently or previously infected with
lymphatic filariasis. 15 million of those were positively confirmed to have lymphedema as reported
in the World Health organization.

Throughout history in the United States, we have had a hard time accepting the concept of
homosexuality and skewing from the idea that we are all gender binary. The police began to
enforce what is known as the sodomy law to discriminate against those who do not comply with
the norm of gender binary. The sodomy law can be defined as oral/anal sex between two partners
(could be two women, two men, or a man and a woman). It has been present within our society for
two centuries and has historically been a crime that went unenforced, for the most part, if
committed by two consenting adults in private. Two specific cases became well known for
attempting to fight the law to gain rights for same sex couples who have been discriminated against

Looking closer into what happened within the court room, Bowers vs Hardwick ended with a
five to four ruling against Hardwick, and Lawrence vs Texas ended with a six to three ruling in
favor of Lawrence. For Hardwick and the LGBT community, it was a terrible loss. This was
frustrating and disappointing for supporters. The decision was criticized widely because it was
sending the message to the world that homosexual relations were not accepted or supported in
this country. They were not receiving the same rights heterosexual citizens were. The result lead
to the question of why the State may be permitted to apply a generally applicable law to certain
persons that it does not apply to others (Bowers v. Hardwick, 1986), referencing the state choosing
to arrest homosexual partners but never heterosexual partners for sodomy. It makes it seem as if as
a nation, we allow discrimination because even our cops and government officials participate in it.
Alternatively for Lawrence and the ACLU, their case was a tremendous success. It was successful
in completing their goal of diminishing the unfair and unequal sodomy laws from the

Jacob Riis was able to capture the living conditions in tenement houses in New York during the late

approach discussed by Alexander von Hoffman in The Origins of American Housing Reform. The
idea that the mental and physical state of its inhabitants are directly correlated to the conditions

Conclusion: The purpose of this experiment was to determine the concentration of an unknown
acid by performing volumetric analysis via a titration procedure (Beran, 2014). The acid that was
used as the analyte was unknown A, an originally clear solution of hydrochloric acid that turned hot
pink after having added approximately 14.50 and 14.40 milliliters of sodium hydroxide, for trials 1
and 2 respectively. The molarity calculated for this acidwas found to be 0.86 M, but this value is not
accurate because the indicator showed that too much sodium hydroxide was added to the solution,

hue. The true concentration of this acid must then be less... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Part A. The mass of KHC8H4O4 is measured to the nearest milligram; however, the volume of
water in which it is dissolved is never of concern the water is even added to the wall of the
Erlenmeyer flask during the titration. Explain why water added to the KHC8H4O4 has no effect
on the date, whereas water added to the NaOH solution may drastically affect the data.
The presence of water is of little significance to the final results of the experiment involving
KHC8H4O4 because this compound is not one that is very hygroscopic, usually being unable to
absorb any water that surrounds it (Beran, 2014). However, this is not the case with sodium
hydroxide because unlike the aforementioned compound, sodium hydroxide is known to be highly
hygroscopic, and if it were to come into contact with water, the concentration of 0.14893 M that
was used in this experiment would change to a lower value, after having been diluted by the water
(Beran, 2014).
5. Part B.2. The wall of the Erlenmeyer flask is occasionally rinsed with water from the wash bottle

concentration of the acid solution being reported as too high, too low, or unaffected?

Capital Punishment and Methods of Execution
Capital Punishment Thirty two out of the fifty states in the United States of America accommodate
to the death sentence, with Virginia being the one of the largest contributors following that of
Texas. In 1976, the death sentence was reinstated by the Supreme Court; this produced the
outcome of Texas holding the largest number of executions within all the states. Every year, people
are brutally killed by inhumane methods of death. Who s to say whether another person has the
right to live or not? By taking the life of another, is to play God. In spite of the fact that some find
it to be unethical taking another man s life, about 70% of the public agree with the continuation of
the death penalty.
Methods of execution include lethal injection; being the first option for most, electrocution, gas
chamber, hanging, and lastly by firing squad; which is only legal in two states, Oklahoma and
Utah; however is it only used if lethal injection is deemed unconstitutional. Many Countries support
this ideal; however, there are those who greatly oppose of it. According to the writers on
Religioustolerance.org, Some countries, such as Italy, routinely refuse to extradite accused
murderers to the US because of the possibility that they might be executed. Canada originally
refused to extradite suspected mass murderer Charles Ng to California for a trial. The government

of the foreign born Hmong population reported their level of education as high school or less.
Additionally, only 40% of the foreign born Hmong population reported being proficient in English.
These statistics indicate that a large portion of Hmong refugees arrived in the U.S. with minimal
education and spoke little English making assimilation even more difficult. Hmong Americans
report a median household income of $48,000 while the U.S. average is $57,000. This statistic is
particularly troubling because although Hmong are only slightly behind the U.S. average 32% of
them live in multigenerational households and average greater than six individuals per household.
However, life is improving for Hmong Americans notably

Some service companies use VPN to run diagnosis of equipment to determine why it is
malfunctioning.
A benefit of VPN s is the use of the Internet to access off site locations or employees. These virtual
connections allow off site locations and employees communication to the LAN. Another benefit
would be improved security. VPN s sit behind a firewall, encrypt information transferred via the
Internet, Internet Protocol Security Protocol (IPSec) which allows better encryption and
authentication and AAA (authentication, authorization and accounting) servers which are used for
more secure access in a remote access VPN environment (Jeff Tyson, HowStuffworks.com).
Benefits also include reduced cost versus WAN or leased lines. Reduced transmit time and
simplified topology.
There are many problems to address before implementing a VPN. These can be divided into three
categories: Implementation, Configuration and Support.
Implementation
A successful VPN should acquire simplified software that end users are comfortable using.
Otherwise expensive training can impose additional costs not addressed in the initial estimated
price of the VPN.
Virtual IP addresses are needed to integrate into the corporate network. These addresses can cause
some problems for application protocols such as NETMeeting and Xwindows.
Configuration:
Areas of concern when configuring a VPN include Internet access type, bandwidth usage and

Groupthink In Beast Of No Nation
Before becoming a child soldier, children go through a process that seems to desensitize and
break down their moral fiber. When faced with the situation of being a child soldier many are
not given a better option then to choose to conform to the aforementioned lifestyle or die. This
situation presented itself to Agu, the protagonist of the film Beast of No Nation. After losing his
father and brother through murder by the government soldiers, he was left with being an orphan
alone in the jungle to fend for himself. Thus causing Agu to be captured by a rebel group and
recruited as a child soldier. However, how does a normal child turn into a killer? Many tactics

The hazing philosophy is a tool used to gauge commitment and strength. Initiates are tasked with
subhuman task that are somewhat physically and psychologically harmful. This cultivates a brand
of loyalty and brotherhood that breeds groupthink. Groupthink is the phenomena where people
seek the desire to conform in a group which results in irrational or dysfunctional decision making.
A hazing ritual that was used as a training tactic for Agu was the Gauntlet , this is when potential
child soldiers had to run through a lineup of men while being beat trying to make it to the other
side. The point is that if you made it through you were strong enough to be a member of the rebel
group and were physically strong as well. Another example, however, which tested them
psychologically, was the test where they had to stand in a straight line and get shot at. What the
children did not know was that the gun would not actual release bullets. They were deceived and

Descriptive Speech At The Airport
As soon as my mom, dad, and brother s suitcases rolled into the airport I knew I was in for the
adventure of a lifetime. It was 4:00 am and even though I was exhausted excitement flowed
through my body like a river. As we boarded the plane and found our seats I heard the captain s
microphone come on Ladies and gentlemen this is your captain speaking we like to welcome
you onboard Delta airline flight to Dallas Fort Worth. The flight duration is around two hours
and we are expecting a fairly smooth flight today. Once again we thank you for choosing to fly
with us and we hope you enjoy your flight My eyes shut as soon as the wheels left the ground. I
woke up to a jolt and the captain saying, Welcome to Dallas Fort Worth! It is partly cloudy and
around 82 degrees. Thank you for choosing Delta and on behalf of the crew we hope you enjoy
your stay. As soon as we entered the airport we were already on our way to the next gate. It was
jam packed with people who all appeared to be in a rush to board their flights. We waited for about
half an hour and then boarded our next flight; this time the destination was MauiHawaii. This flight
lasted 8 hours and little did I know, it would be the longest 8 hours of my entire life. After what
felt like ages, we had finally reached Maui. I opened up my window on the plane and the view was
absolutely breathtaking. Beautiful green land, rolling mountains, and gorgeous blue water covered
the island. As we landed and entered the

Arjuna s Second Discourse Of The Bhagavad
Arjuna is faced with an internal dilemma during the Second Discourse of the Bhagavad Gita, and
although the God Krishna seeks to help guide him towards an understanding of the meaning of his
life, Arjuna is still wary of making the wrong decision. This decision concerns itself with either
fighting in a civil war against family relatives, having to kill those Arjunacares most about, or
abandoning his dharma as a warrior and jeopardizing fulfilling his duty the greater Self that plays
such a pivotal role in his people s culture and beliefs. While advocating for the battle and fulfilling
one s dharma, Krishnautilizes the point that the Self an overarching force in life is a formless,
eternal entity that cannot die and is more than the mere vessels that encompass the human beings
across the battlefield. It is more important to the greater vitality of one s existence to complete a
duty to the Self rather than live with the temporary benefits of living in what may appear to be a
more pleasurable life, but one with no fulfillment.

After all, why would anyone deliberately increase their own suffering for an ambiguous entity that
has unlimited time to develop and advance to the higher good? As is the case in the Bhagavad Gita,
Arjuna must learn to understand that the Self would benefit from his involvement in the battle
even if it led to the death of some of his family members due to Arjuna having completed his all
important dharma. For someone who was keen to living with desires, and only looked at having
the greatest life one could muster, it would be difficult to justify the actions that would expand one

Diversity Within The Workplace, Many People And Companies...
When looking at diversity in the workplace, many people and companies encourage it. Cultural
diversity has become a defining characteristic of an increasing number of societies ( Consequences
of Cultural diversity this should be the author and the date). They feel that it is a great thing to
have diversity in the workplace, however, what some companies do not think about is the negative
effects of having too much diversity in the workplace. A workforce that has significant differences
in ethnicity, race, religion, gender and other individual traits can produce negative effects,
especially if not well managed. These negative effects of diversity are understandable if the work

The real problem comes with the companies that are widely diverse because of the different
combinations of cultures that are being mixed. Also, another problem with diversity in the
workplace is time. Different cultures and societies view time differently, as how many hours
employees are expected to work in a day and how many are spent with family vary. Other
cultures work long hours in a day, but they also take a long lunch break as where others work for
an average of eight hours a day with an average lunch of thirty minutes. With all of the differences
that cultures have, it can make it difficult for a large corporation to be successful and effective, as
well as efficient, when managing the workplace.
The benefits of diversity in the hospitality business are numerous, however. Diversity can bring
new views and perspectives to the table to other workers that they may not have been exposed to
it before. It may not occur to a large group of, for example, middle class white people that there are
better solutions or plans for their workplace because they all might have relatively the same ideals
and work ethics. However, having diverse groups of people could bring those fresh ideas and
problem solving to these workers that may otherwise not occur to them. Especially different

Common Examples Of Child Protective Service
In 2002 there was estimated to be nearly 3 million referrals to Child Protective Services (CPS) in
the United States, and about 5 million in the year 2000 (McWey Mullis, 2004). Children who are
living in environments that put them in harms way, depending on the situation are generally
removed from their home and placed into a foster home in attempts to keep them safe (Carlson,
Egeland Lawrence, 2006). Common examples of Child Protective Service (CPS) referrals include
physical abuse, sexual abuse, and psychological maltreatment (McWey Mullis, 2004). In 2001 it
was estimated that nearly 542,000 children were in foster carein the United States and that the
number of children in foster care exceeded the number of available foster homes by nearly 30
40% (Carlson, Egeland Lawrence, 2006). For many children in foster care, reunification with
biological parent or parents is the ultimate goal (McWey, Acock Porter, 2010). In 60% of foster
care cases, reunification with biological parents occurs (Carlson, Egeland Lawrence, 2006) .In
order for reunification to be possible, or to help determine whether reunification can occur, children
and biological parents have scheduled visits with trained supervisors who monitor the visits
(Haight, Kagle Black, 2003). The duty of the supervisor is to look at the parent child interactions
and determine whether or not they are appropriate. Supervised visitation has been shown to have

Abstract
Hofstede s model (1980) has been used widely in research in the past two decades. The culture
based model consists of four dimensions: power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism
collectivism, and masculinity femininity. Each of these dimensions was identified through the use
of group level data collected from IBM branches in 40 different countries. Despite the contributions
of the model to cultural research, it has faced many criticisms over the years. Some in principle ...

Power distance, which is typically measured at a national or collective level, must also be
an
measured at an individual level. The reasoning behind this clarification is that a country
na
as a whole may exhibit high power distance, but the distribution of individuals within the country
typically follows a normal curve. Primarily, some people will be extremely high or low on power
distance, but the majority center around the intermediate levels of power distance. Despite the
difference between national and individual levels of power distance, the individual does influence
the national level. In a study done by Maznevski,
DiStefano, Gomez, Noorderhaven, and Wu (2002), it was found that when cultural data was first
gathered at the individual level then aggregated to the national level, there was a
Hofstede 5 difference in means between countries. This indicates that, the average individual
level of power distance will be higher in a country that is ranked high on power distance. So
what exactly influences the individual level of power distance? Such aspects as age, where you
grew up, and if you moved away from the country help to determine each individual s level of
power distance (Triandis, 2004; Yamada Singelis, 1999). The idea of individual and national levels
of analysis presented for power distance also holds true for the remaining three cultural dimensions.

The second dimension is uncertainty avoidance.

Effects Of Alcohol On Social Behavior
The presence of alcoholic beverages seems ubiquitous today, and it has been that way for
thousands of years. Nowadays, it can be found at sporting events, social gatherings, with meals, and
in many other environments. Alcohol is a psychoactive drug (it alters mood and potentially
consciousness) and is specifically classified as a depressant. Depressant drugs slow down the
nervous systemand physiological functioning while promoting a relaxing, drowsy feeling. In the
case of alcohol, these aforementioned effects typically arise when heavy doses of the drug are
consumed. In low to moderate doses, however, the opposite happens. The alcohol has a mood
elevating effect, along with many other physical and social symptoms that are associated with it.
This essay will discuss some of the effects that alcohol has on social behavior. First, the mechanism
of action alcohol has on the brainwill be explained, followed by paragraphs that discuss how
moderate amounts of alcohol influence social behavior, sexual behavior, and driving ability. The
fundamental basis for how alcohol effects the body starts at the neuronal level. A neuronis another
name for nerve cell. The human brain contains trillions of these nerve cells, which transmit
information to and from each other, and subsequently to the rest of the body. Neurons have
dendrites, which contain receptors that receive chemical messages from other nerve cells. These
receptors are influenced by chemicals called neurotransmitters, which

At first, when the tampering was not known, media focused on the sensationalistic fact that Tylenol

Tylenol was seen as a victim of the circumstances.
Before the crisis, Johnson Johnson was not actively involved with press coverage, but when the
event occurred they appreciated the profits of media communication in order to reach out to their
consumers faster and more efficiently. Several major press conferences had place at the company s
headquarters. During the course of the events, over 100,000 news stories ran in U. S. newspapers.
A post crisis study done by the own Johnson Johnson company revealed that over 90 percent of the
country population knew about the Tylenol deaths within the first week. (Harris, et al., n.d.).
Experts were predicting an obscure future for the product. Advertising specialist Jerry Della Femina
stated that he was almost sure that a product under that name could never be sold again. Femina
was far from being right, since Tylenol took short time period to be back in the market, and is still

Thirdly, we plan to engage in the outreach of this populated and diverse section of London through
one on one and group discussions and studies of Christ and His Word, developing a strong
presence, relationship, and service in the community, and by showing the city of London the beacon
of light the Stratford congregation is and can continue to be.
The Stratford congregation is a congregation of passionate Christians who have a desire to fulfill

London and begin this work full time, we need to raise living expenses for this commitment of
about $1800 US dollars per month. The Stratford congregation is going to be able to support us
with ВЈ500 a week, which is roughly $633 USD. Their generous help will allow us to pay rent,

I, By The Audience Experienced The Journey Of Chris Ladd
In the short film i , the audience experienced the journey of Chris Ladd as he worked to
determine his true identity. His journey reflected the change in ideas and measurement of
personality over time. He ultimately concluded that there isn t a way to label one s own identity,
but rather all measurements are simply descriptors. To arrive at this conclusion he partook in the
three major methods of personality study: Subjective, Objective and BLIS Data Inventories.
Through these tests, it was present that though major themes were continued throughout the
process for Ladd, each measurement gave a different and incomplete answer. This led me to
believe that if I were to also study my own identity, I would use similar but look at the results
through a different lens, specifically one of introspection. Ladd began his journey with projective
/subjective methods, which was completed through the use of a psychic. He was critical of this
methodology from the beginning, mainly due to its founding in Freud and the lack of reliability in
the studies. This is alluded to in the film with the variability of answers to Rorschach Tests, which
can be interpreted differently by a patient each time, and the administrator can also interpret the
answers differently each time. When the psychic made a computing error, it acted as a self

Differences And Disadvantages Of Standardization Vs....
2.3.1 Standardization vs. customization On one hand, standardization represents a way of reducing
the costs, increasing productivity, lowering the prices and systemizing innovations so that they can
be reproduced (Sundbo, 1996; Gallouj, 1994; Sundbo 1998, cited in Sundbo, 2002). Customization
on the other hand, increases the customer satisfaction ensuring the perceived quality, creates
opportunities for rising the price. Furthermore it enables innovation to take place near the customer,
which offers a great possibility to succeed on the market. The traditional economic theory highlights
productivity gains as being the essence of any economic activity, implying economies of scale and
cost reduction, while the theories of servicedevelopment stress the importance of customer care in
service activities, not reducing the costs (Normann, 1991; Gronroos 1990, cited Sundbo, 2002).

adaptations of organisms to a variety of habitat from jungle to grassland to mountain habitats. In the
temperate regions the species resembled more closely the species of the tropical regions of South
America rather than the corresponding speciesof the temperate regions of Europe. For example, in
the grasslands of Argentina there are no rabbits, however, there are rodents that resemble rabbits;
these rodents are unrelated to European rabbits but are similar to other rodents in South America.
Moreover, the fossils in South America are dissimilar to European fossils but have similarities with
extant (i.e. currently living) plants and animals... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cuvier founded the science of paleontology and described the differences between the fossil flora
and fauna in different strata of rock: he observed that the more recent strata had fossils that more
closely resembled extant organisms. Cuvier believed that the discontinuities between fossils in
different strata were brought about by catastrophes such as floods which caused the extinction of
many species living at a particular time. This interpretation of earth s history is termed
catastrophism and was also held by many contemporary geologists. By contrast, Hutton and
subsequently Lyell held that geological processes are slow and subtle but that over prolonged
periods of time (millions of years) these can lead to major changes; implicit in this viewpoint is an
age for the earth radically different from the 6,000 years of the biblical creationists.
Other key influences on Darwin were Malthus who had concluded that war and famine were
inevitable as the human population grew more rapidly than available resources, and Lamarck who
had proposed a theory of evolution based on a continuous process of gradual modification due to
acquired characteristics. Both Darwin and Wallace brought together a multitude of facts including
the geographical distribution of organisms, comparative morphology of living organisms and their
fossil precursors. They postulated that long term environmental changes including movement of

Senate Filibustering System
Members of Congress are charged with three primary duties writing laws, overseeing the
implementation of laws, and serving the needs of their constituents. Senate Filibuster, House Rules
Committee and the Conference Committee all have had a profound effect in the lawmaking
process. Additionally, general accounting office and hearings are both methods that Congress
employs in order to maintain oversight over the federal bureaucracy. Lastly, Casework drastically
affects members attention to legislation because it diverts their time, and resources away from
focusing on legislation. The Senate Filibuster was initially created as a way to ensure that minority
opinions were heard and understood before the Senate voted on an issue. Senate first allowed...

Filibusters on motions to proceed prevent the Senate from even being able to consider ideas for
how to solve our country s big problems. For years now, small numbers of senators representing
as little as 11% of the country have kept the Senate from even discussing important legislation
that has passed Committee review. Virtual Filibusters allow small numbers of senators to
effortlessly place personal political agendas above the work of government with no consequence.
As a result, even routine Senate functions like approving executive appointees get stuck in
partisan politics, resulting in 85 vacancies on federal judiciary benches. Major pieces of
legislation, including a bill that would have provided medical care for 9/11 responders, have
enjoyed majority support in the Senate yet died in the face of filibusters for lack of cloture.
Legislation that should pass into law has been canceled and courts have been thrown into disarray,
but the senators who have helped make that happen have never needed to actually make a case to

Pillar Of Islam
The religious practice of Islam began with the prophet Muhammed, which means surrender in
Islam. The central idea is to surrender to the will og God. The Qu ran is a book that actually
contains very little about Muhammed himself but more of the stories of the prophet that provides
narration of his life. The religious practice of Islammeans to submit to God, as soon as the Islamic
armies conquered land they began building mosques. The religious practice is based on five pillars
called the arkan, which all members should adhere too.
The first pillar of Islam is the Profession of faith, the Shahada. The profession of Shahada is the
most fundamental expression of faith in the Islamic practice, it states that the only god id God

Creating A Successful Business Model
Introduction
Creating a successful business model requires a wide variety of detail. Numerous businesses decide
simply to enter a market with standard practices and standard products that are related to a
particular product or service, however, countless others attempt to innovate by creating new
services or business models. Innovation is done through small medium enterprises (SME) or
through innovation driven enterprises (IDE). The following paper will examine two broad firms
and their various details regarding benefits and risks. Innovation will be addressed in developing
countries, in addition, how firms can create a culture of innovation to support this business model.
The concern regarding government involvement will be explored, and ... Show more content on

Given that IDE s are creating new and un tested concepts into the market, the possibility of failure
is significant. However, this same risk can provide a greater payoff for IDE entrepreneurs if they
manage to be successful (Aulet, 2013).
Creating a Culture of Innovation
According to Aulet
There are a number of ways companies can create a culture of innovation. One way companies can
create a culture of innovation is by creating an infrastructure to allow people to experiment without
it hurting the business; innovation comes from experimentation and risk and when risk can be
controlled more experimentation can be done (Aulet, 2013). By creating an environment that not
only allows innovation, but rewards it, a continuing cycle can be created to invite growth.
According to Peters
One way is to create a culture of innovation is by creating an environment that focuses on the
development of people (Heywood, De Smet Webb 2014). By focusing on the development of
individuals and by creating environments that are supportive, open, and energetic, it encourages
new ideas and positive outlooks.
According to Execution Plan Video
Rewarding those who develop innovation is helping to encouraging it (Films on Demand, 2008).
Developing new ideas, but also exploring existing ones is another method of development for a
culture of innovation as well as it supports the current business

Kite Runner History
Analysis of the role of History The kite runner is a gripping coming of age story that spans
throughout thirty years and is set in Afghanistan and partly in America. The author Khaled Hosseini
effectively imported particular events in Afghanistan s history into the plot of the novel. They
shape the characters and enrich the novel s cultural meaning and allow the themes to evolve. The
first mention of the past is mentioned in chapter five when Amir the protagonist hears gunfire in
the street and his frighten and Amir later learned that the gunfire symbolized the end of the Afghan
monarchy Daoud Khan had overthrown his cousin King Zahir Shah (while the king was abroad) in
a bloodless coup. Daoud Shah instituted a republic and became president.... Show more content on

The author uses this because he presents kite running as one of the major symbols in the text.
Kite running is a symbol of freedom, culture, happiness of Afghanistan. They are also important
for Amir as they act as symbols of both his childhood happiness I tested the string the way
Hassan and I used to, by holding it between my thumb and forefinger and pulling it (page 336),
and his betrayal of Hassan. When he tries to remember something happy in the fuel truck, Amir
immediately thinks of his carefree days flying kites with Hassan. From chapter fifteen the author
changes the structure to chronological order and gives the stage to Rahim khan for a
chapter(sixteen)in which we discover Hassan s back story all these years. The author tells us those
historical events that took place in Afghanistan affects the lives of the characters by contrasting
Assef versus Amir. Assef is representative of the Taliban s which represents new rules, discomfort,
violence, new Afghanistan. Whereas Amir in other hand represents peace, old rules, old tradition,
love and old Afghanistan. Hassan and Sohrab are a symbol of all the terrible things which have
happened to both the characters and the country. The author presents us a matured Amir which
enlarges the theme of coming of age when Amir decides to save and adopt Sohrab, it also evolves
the theme of redemption. Finally, after a big headache and

Essay on How Heros and Villains Have Envolved Since...
Everyone has a different perspective today about heroes and villains than what they thought back in
the ancient times. During the ancient times, the Greek concept of a hero was different from our
own cultures. As the years passed, the overall concept of what a hero changed dramatically then
what they thought years ago. A herois a literary figure, of course, but here, too, we need caution so
that we don t misapply our own cultural ideas and standards to the ancient Greek hero.
You may ask, what is a hero? How can you describe a villain? But everyone will have a different
answer to these questions. We all have different points of views on what a hero or a villain can be.

two ways in which I may meet my end. If I stay here and fight, I shall lose my safe homecoming
but I will have a glory that is unwilling: whereas if I go home my glory will die, but it will be a

Because the death can never be made up, these honors were ongoing and never ending. These
festivals are preformed on seasonally basic and anyone who participates in this worship believes
that it will continue forever, and the hero to be immortalized, to live forever. What do people

Explain Why The Ions That Are Responsible For A Strong Base
The ions that are responsible for making a solution of a base or an acid is H+ or a proton. The pH
scale measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. On the pH scale there are numbers that
indicate how strong or weak the acid or the base is. On the pH scale the numbers range from 0 14.
0 2 stands for a strong acidic, 3 5 for a weak acidic, 6 8 means the solution is neutral, 9 11 for a
weak base, and 12 14 for a strong base. There are three theories that are used to define a base and an
acid. The first theory is the The Arrhenius Theory this theory says an acid produces hydrogen ions,
H+ in water solution and a base produces hydroxide ions, OHв€’ in water solution. The second
theory is The Bronsted Lowry Theory . This

Why Prefab Is A Q A With Lane Office Ceo Gregory F. Burke
Why Prefab? A Q A with Lane Office CEO Gregory F. Burke
Last month we featured an article that spoke of the benefits of prefabrication constructions in
interior design. In today s fast paced society, time is of the essence. Using prefabricated interior
solutions are an excellent alternative to conventional construction methods, as they make the
construction process quicker, more flexible and more efficient, as well as help cut down production
costs.
Learn more about prefabrication and its benefits with Lane Office CEO Gregory F. Burke, who
recently sat down to reflect on past projects, the future of prefabricated design, and answer some of
prefabrication s most commonly asked questions.
Q: What are some of the benefits of going prefab, especially in New York City?
A: Let s put it this way. New York City is about how much? and how fast? This is Number 1, and a
faster speed of construction is key. With prefab, we can construct interior spaces in a matter of days
instead of months. What does this mean for the client? It means a cleaner construction process,
which translates to fewer disruptions, less time and decreased cost. Number 2, from a green
standpoint, every day we re getting closer to net zero manufacturing at the factory level. On site,
DIRTT s solutions never need to find their way to a landfill or recycling facility due to innate
flexibility. Number 3 is all about flexibility. Our solutions easily accommodate churn, changing
technology and can be redeployed

Hypocritical Nature Of Claudius s Soliloquy
Upon observation, it seems Claudius soliloquy reveals another perspective to the audience. Instead
of the cold and heartless impressions created by Hamlet, Claudius appears vulnerable and uncertain,
evidently worried about his consequences of the murder of Old Hamlet. However, in truth, this
soliloquy reveals his hypocritical nature as he searches for forgiveness, raising questions concerning
his sincerity of his speech and desires. Firstly, Claudius understands the magnitude of his atrocity,
comparing it to the primal eldest curse (41), which is Cain s murder of Abel. Shakespeare uses this
allusion to embellish the severity of this murder, creating an impression that the murder is
comparable to the first and most unanticipated bloodshed

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Microcontroller
A Microcontroller is a single chip microcomputer that contains all the components such as the CPU,
RAM, some form of ROM, I/O ports, and timers.
Unlike a general purpose computer, which also includes all of these components, a micro
controller is designed for a very specific task to control a particular system. Micro controllers are
sometimes called embedded microcontrollers, which just means that they are part of an embedded
system. A microprocessoris a general purpose digital computer with central processing unit (CPU),
which contains arithmetic and logic unit (ALU), a program counter (PC), a stack pointer (SP),
some working registers, a clock timing circuit, and interrupts circuits.
The main disadvantage of microprocessor is that it has no on chip memory. So we are going for
micro controller since it has on board programmable ROM and I/O that can be programmed for ...

Descartes s Dualism Argument
The theory of dualism states that the human body comprises of the mental and the physical
components, which are separate substances with independent existence. Physical things are objects
which occupy space, and we use our senses to perceive, such as bones and flesh. Mental things are
abstract, existing only in thought and do not have extension in the physical world. In this paper, I
will be discussing Descartes s substantial dualismargument and refute his position by pointing out
the inconsistency in his examples and give evidence that the brain and mindare one.
Here is how the Substance dualism is stated in the paper,
(1) If we can exist without bodies, then we cannot be bodies.
(2) We can exist without bodies.
(3) Therefore, we cannot be bodies.
Premise 1
In the first premise, he argues that if the mind and body are one then the body cannot exist without
the mind and vice versa. On the contrary, if the mind and body are separate, as substance dualists
claim, then one can exist without the other. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And this assumption raises issues if the person is not a believer of soul immortality. There is also
overwhelming evidence from medical data which shows the connection between the brain and the
mind. For example, when you touch colder water in in winter signals are sent to the from the brain
to the mind and the mind sends back instructions to the brain to remove the hand. The removal of
brain parts results in reduced mental cognition. From scientific evidence things like plants which do
not have brains have no souls and there is nothing with a soul but without a brain. Therefore, there

Violence was their preferred method of dealing with enemies.
The number of violent attacks on black citizens as well as outsiders fills volumes of record books.
Michael Schwerner joined forces with SNCC along with his chief aid, James Chaney, a black
Mississippi native. They both had hopes that the federal government would be pushed by their
numbers to increase FBI and federal protection for the students. The third man on their team was
Andrew Goodman. He was a reasonably wealthy, white, 20 year old from Manhattan. Idealistic
and eager to work, Andrew had no clue that his first day in Mississippi would also be his last. On
the night of June 21st in Neshoba County the three young men disappeared after being stopped
on a bogus traffic violation. After discovering their burned out car on the second day of the
search, most everyone knew the three had been murdered. The press followed the search and
brought the case to the nation s attention. Many bodies of murdered civil rights workers and
black citizens were recovered from the backwaters and swamps as federal agents and Navy
seamen scoured Neshoba County. The killers in Neshoba County had made a very grave mistake.

Since reaching the age of 44 years old activities that 40 year olds do has not stopped me from

what products I use to stay youthful. As a result of keeping the crow s feet off my eyes and

stores that Ron Johnson is pushing through will make the stores easier to navigate through.
Customers will also have a unique experience from any other store with the additions of Town

Industry Analysis
J.C. Penney is trying to re invent itself into the retail industry and put its name back at the front
of everyone s mind. People are trying to spend less money during this period of economic
downturn and J.C. Penney is trying to market itself to make customers loyal to their brands in
order to keep them coming back. J.C. Penney is trying to target people who will come back into
the store based on the in store brands that are available, and the consistent pricing such as middle
income families. One tactic that has been used to get families into J.C. Penney is offering free
children s haircuts. Parents will hopefully bring their kids in and then browse through the store
afterward. Competition during and after the conversion to the new store layouts and pricing will
be steep. Stores like Macy s, Kohls, and Target offer many similar products and styles to J.C
Penney at similar prices. Other stores like Nordstrom are more expensive but have very loyal
customers. J.C. Penney will need to attract customers that traditionally shop at other stores as well
as bring back customers who quit shopping at J.C. Penney and went to other stores. Without these
customers there will not be enough sales to make back the money spent on renovations, as well as
on consistent pricing of merchandise.

Boyle Heights has significantly been a target for several projects and programs that have had
impact on the residential pattern, economic activity, and land use of the community. One of

  • 2. My Experience In High School Essay It was a cool fall day, the pleasant cool breeze against my face, as I make my way down the road to the rendezvous point. I arrive at the high school, and realize I m slightly early. I put the skateboard on the ground and proceed to attempt to ride it, thankful that no one was there to see. Though I enjoy skating, the pointof meeting at the high school was so that no one had to see our novice attempts at it. After five minutes of failing to get the board to leave the ground with me remaining on it, Raith and Mea cross the road just in time to witness my pitiful endeavor. We spent most of the morning cruising on our boards and sitting, drinking various sodas we had brought, and chatting. It was a rather enjoyable start to the day, but by the time noon rolled around, most of us had to use the bathroom. So we collectively decided to headdown to the skate park because it was close, had a bathroom, and sounded like it could be fun. Little did we know how much trouble would come from this little trip. We arrive at the skate park to find that, surprisingly, no one is there. I make my way to the bathroom, as well does the rest of the group. Afterwards we can t see the point of heading back immediately. I attempt a few ramps and fall on my butt a few times so, ultimately, we decide to sit at the bench and talk. I was facing the road and Raith and Mea sat with their backs to it. At this point, I m already uncomfortable being here, because I can t skate to save my life and have ... Griffin Bassman Professor Frame Ancient Near East History 12/5/14 How did the Persian kings control/govern the various parts of their realm? Consider at least three different geographical areas The origins of Cyrus the Great are rather unclear and highly disputed. Multiple accounts range from him being the grandson of the Median King Astyages to being the son of a poor Persian family of a disreputable clan. Although there can be no certainty, as with most everything from the ancient world, it is widely believed that, by heredity, he became the sub king of a Persian land called Persis, under the rule of the Median king Astyages. After conquering Media, Babylonia, and Egypt, for instance, Cyrus The Great and Cambyses II would make a personal union with the peoples of these countries. They would crown themselves according to the local customs, and created normal conditions for the development of the economy and transit trade. They retained, with moderate altercations, the local political structures in these countries, and offered the peoples a large degree of local self government. These first two kings proved to have not created a very well structured empire, however, which led to the multiple uprisings from 523 521 BCE. (Gershevitch 1985, 502 504) From there, Darius I, the King who proceeded Cambyses II, found a more stable balance by putting in place a more organized administrative system that would not undergo any fundamental changes up until the demise of the Achaemenid Empire. The system that Darius I put in place split the empire up into roughly twenty satrapies that would be governed by satraps. The satraps were responsible for collecting the annual tribute set by the king, drafting people to the army, and maintaining justice and security within their satrapy. The satraps would also have an armed force at their disposal to keep everybody within their satrapy in line. (Gershevitch 1985, 267) Inspectors would also periodically visit each satrapy to ... • 5. The Deranged Mind In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein A creature is born, and thrust out into the world. With no evil in his heart, he is feared and outcasted by society for only his repulsive image. He held an innocent soul and a pure heart at birth, however the isolation and hatred he endured from others transformed him into a murderous demon. This impaired soul is the abandoned monster created by Victor Frankenstein. Mary Shelley offers insight into the emotions and mind of a man forced to become a fiend through betrayal in her novel Frankenstein. Athenian Imperialism and her Changing Relations with Allies Nature of Athenian Imperialism Changing Relations with Allies Lars Hoogvliet After the conclusion of the Persian Wars (492 479BC) with Athens being the true victor, and before the Peloponnesian War, a period of prosperity covered Athens, and they needed to devise new ways to protect themselves and expand their wealth, and how this would affect their relations with allies. The Athenians and their Allies was an organisation led by the Athenians in the 5th century, but is now referred to as the Delian League or the Confederacy of Athens. The official aim of the League was, according to Thucydides, to compensate themselves for their losses [of the Persian War] by ravaging the territory of the King of Persia. The long term aim of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The besiegement of Thasos revealed Athens true motivations behind the League and the future plans for her allies. According to _Ancient Greece Using Sources_ Thasos was one of the largest and richest members of the Delian League, and a conflict broke out between Athens and Thasos over the gold mining on the island. Thasos then attempted to withdraw from the League, as the Persians were no longer a threat in the Aegean, and Athens was demanding too much for too little in return. The League, under the control of Cimon, then besieged Thasos for two years, and destroyed their city walls, confiscated their navy, closed their mint and annexed their possessions on the mainland. According to Thucydides, the period from the revolt of Thasos to the ostracism of Cimon (465 461BC) was the time when the main friction between Sparta and Athens occurred and eventually led to their war. If Sparta really was willing to attack Athens, an apparent ally, then their relationship must have been weak and forced. Was Sparta jealous of Athens wealth and power? Did they feel threatened by the Athenians sudden harshness against their own allies ? Or it could have been a combination of reasons. Thucydides didn t help either when his pro Athenian feelings got the better of him, this was a time when Sparta was particularly friendly to Athens because of the courage displayed by Athens against the Persians. The Misery Of Silence By Maxing Hong Kinston Critical Analysis of The Misery of Silence The Misery of Silence is a short essay in the book by Maxing Hong Kinston, The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts, published in Alfred A. Knopf in 1976. This narrative illustrates the author s childhood as a first generation Chinese American and how her personality was split by living both in American culture and Chinese culture. When Kingston was little, she was so afraid of speaking English that she was silent in American school, which was a misery for her. Even when she spoke, she forced herself to make her speech sound softer and thus acceptable for Americans. By contrast, she and her Chinese American fellows behaved as they liked in Chinese school. As this shows, voice is the key word in this essay. She describes it as an indicator of Chinese American children s personality; their silence means temporary personality death in American community, and the girls American feminine way to speak means established another themselves. This narrative is helpful to know how immigrant children feel in the new environment where there is a huge language barrier. May David Vivas Mrs. Bradley English 11; Period 2 May 3, 2017 Their Eyes Were Watching God In this story, I have found that the themes that have stood out to me is gender and love. These themes have captured a major thematic idea by gender being discriminated against the women and the men. Gender is described as women being weaker than the men and men being the powerful ones. Love is described in this story as independent until it is found. Finding love is a part of life and everybody tries to find it but when it is found, it seems like you have lived you life to the fullest. These examples of the themes can be brought into the real world and can affect how people live their lives. My first theme is going to be about gender. In the novel, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gender can happen in the real world which can lead to personal experiences. I have experienced some gender inequality throughout my life and have had family situations since I have been alive. For instance, my parents lived in a time where men went to work and the women had to clean, cook, and stuff around the house. I have experienced some problems myself by my brother and I having to do outside yard work while my sister only does inside work. She claims that yard work is for men and it s a man s job. . What I have to say about that is that men and women don t need to do work based off if it is a man or woman s job, work is work and you shouldn t base it off gender inequality. Another situation I was faced with was when my mom was trying to get a job, she was trying to get a job at selling Tupperware. She was faced with you can t sell Tupperware because you are a woman and people don t buy stuff off of women. . She sticked with her gut and went for it, now she is very successful in her business and doesn t let what a guy said to her stop her. Another theme I chose from the story was love. Love can be a powerful thing or a devastating thing. For example, After that she came to where Joe Starks was waiting for her with a hired rig. Looking closer into what happened within the court room, Bowers vs Hardwick ended with a five to four ruling against Hardwick, and Lawrence vs Texas ended with a six to three ruling in favor of Lawrence. For Hardwick and the LGBT community, it was a terrible loss. This was frustrating and disappointing for supporters. The decision was criticized widely because it was sending the message to the world that homosexual relations were not accepted or supported in this country. They were not receiving the same rights heterosexual citizens were. The result lead to the question of why the State may be permitted to apply a generally applicable law to certain persons that it does not apply to others (Bowers v. Hardwick, 1986), referencing the state choosing to arrest homosexual partners but never heterosexual partners for sodomy. It makes it seem as if as a nation, we allow discrimination because even our cops and government officials participate in it. Riis s ability to capture these images allowed him to reflect the moral environmentalist approach discussed by Alexander von Hoffman in The Origins of American Housing Reform. The idea that the mental and physical state of its inhabitants are directly correlated to the conditions found in the residential districts. For example, the image entitled The Baby s Playground (Chen, 4), resonates with Von Hoffman s description of the urban slum, a residential environment that degraded and harmed the poor (Von Hoffman, 2). Volumetric Analysis Lab Conclusion: The purpose of this experiment was to determine the concentration of an unknown acid by performing volumetric analysis via a titration procedure (Beran, 2014). The acid that was used as the analyte was unknown A, an originally clear solution of hydrochloric acid that turned hot pink after having added approximately 14.50 and 14.40 milliliters of sodium hydroxide, for trials 1 and 2 respectively. The molarity calculated for this acidwas found to be 0.86 M, but this value is not accurate because the indicator showed that too much sodium hydroxide was added to the solution, eventually passing the endpoint, resulting in a vibrant pink color instead of the intended light pink hue. Explain why water added to the KHC8H4O4 has no effect on the date, whereas water added to the NaOH solution may drastically affect the data. The presence of water is of little significance to the final results of the experiment involving KHC8H4O4 because this compound is not one that is very hygroscopic, usually being unable to absorb any water that surrounds it (Beran, 2014). However, this is not the case with sodium hydroxide because unlike the aforementioned compound, sodium hydroxide is known to be highly hygroscopic, and if it were to come into contact with water, the concentration of 0.14893 M that was used in this experiment would change to a lower value, after having been diluted by the water (Beran, 2014). 5. Capital Punishment and Methods of Execution Capital Punishment Thirty two out of the fifty states in the United States of America accommodate to the death sentence, with Virginia being the one of the largest contributors following that of Texas. In 1976, the death sentence was reinstated by the Supreme Court; this produced the outcome of Texas holding the largest number of executions within all the states. Every year, people are brutally killed by inhumane methods of death. Who s to say whether another person has the right to live or not? By taking the life of another, is to play God. In spite of the fact that some find it to be unethical taking another man s life, about 70% of the public agree with the continuation of the death penalty. Methods of execution include lethal injection; being the first option for most, electrocution, gas chamber, hanging, and lastly by firing squad; which is only legal in two states, Oklahoma and Utah; however is it only used if lethal injection is deemed unconstitutional. Many Countries support this ideal; however, there are those who greatly oppose of it. His journey reflected the change in ideas and measurement of personality over time. He ultimately concluded that there isn t a way to label one s own identity, but rather all measurements are simply descriptors. To arrive at this conclusion he partook in the three major methods of personality study: Subjective, Objective and BLIS Data Inventories. Through these tests, it was present that though major themes were continued throughout the process for Ladd, each measurement gave a different and incomplete answer. Differences And Disadvantages Of Standardization Vs.... 2.3.1 Standardization vs. customization On one hand, standardization represents a way of reducing the costs, increasing productivity, lowering the prices and systemizing innovations so that they can be reproduced (Sundbo, 1996; Gallouj, 1994; Sundbo 1998, cited in Sundbo, 2002). Customization on the other hand, increases the customer satisfaction ensuring the perceived quality, creates opportunities for rising the price. Furthermore it enables innovation to take place near the customer, which offers a great possibility to succeed on the market. The traditional economic theory highlights productivity gains as being the essence of any economic activity, implying economies of scale and cost reduction, while the theories of servicedevelopment stress the importance of customer care in service activities, not reducing the costs (Normann, 1991; Gronroos 1990, cited Sundbo, 2002). Another example of novelty can be from my past experience is when I took a tour to Agra where they have the prettiest places such as Taj Mahal, which was created for a queen, Mumtaz Mahal by her husband. This situation deals with novelty because this is something that many people will be unfamiliar with or will be a new information for them which they will view this at something else at first when they will hear at very first time. In South America he observed the adaptations of organisms to a variety of habitat from jungle to grassland to mountain habitats. In the temperate regions the species resembled more closely the species of the tropical regions of South America rather than the corresponding speciesof the temperate regions of Europe. For example, in the grasslands of Argentina there are no rabbits, however, there are rodents that resemble rabbits; these rodents are unrelated to European rabbits but are similar to other rodents in South America. Moreover, the fossils in South America are dissimilar to European fossils but have similarities with extant (i.e. currently living) plants and animals... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cuvier founded the science of paleontology and described the differences between the fossil flora and fauna in different strata of rock: he observed that the more recent strata had fossils that more closely resembled extant organisms. Cuvier believed that the discontinuities between fossils in different strata were brought about by catastrophes such as floods which caused the extinction of many species living at a particular time. This interpretation of earth s history is termed catastrophism and was also held by many contemporary geologists. By contrast, Hutton and subsequently Lyell held that geological processes are slow and subtle but that over prolonged periods of time (millions of years) these can lead to major changes; implicit in this viewpoint is an age for the earth radically different from the 6,000 years of the biblical creationists. Other key influences on Darwin were Malthus who had concluded that war and famine were inevitable as the human population grew more rapidly than available resources, and Lamarck who had proposed a theory of evolution based on a continuous process of gradual modification due to acquired characteristics. Both Darwin and Wallace brought together a multitude of facts including the geographical distribution of organisms, comparative morphology of living organisms and their fossil precursors.
