Auxins are a class of plant hormones that are present throughout plants and influence many growth processes. The most important auxin is indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Auxins contribute to organ development and shaping. They also influence root growth by stimulating root initiation at low concentrations but inhibiting elongation at high concentrations. Auxins induce apical dominance by inhibiting axillary bud growth through stimulation of ethylene production. Auxins are also required for fruit growth and development and can delay fruit senescence and flowering.
